RAPC Travel Demand ManagementPinecrest Supports and Services CenterPhase 2: Data CollectionFindings and Future StepsToday, we are gonna talk about the RAPC Travel Demand Management with Pinecrest. We just finish the 2nd phase Data Collection. We will go thru its findings and take a look at the future steps.1The Context: Transportation is always changing

What is travel demand management and why we are doing this? Because our transportation is always changing. How we travel around has changed dramatically in the past century. 2

The way we travel changes the way we live. This is a picture of historical area of New Orleans. The early city patterns were based on walking as the primary transportation mode. Streets were narrow, cities were compact. 3

The introduction of automobiles allowed people and businesses to spread out. We can travel further and faster than ever. The problem is, automobiles seem to become the sole mean of transportation, especially in inner city transportation. 4

The costs of automobile reliance has soared.

Revenue sources for financing transportation projects are limited.

When we have a congestion problem, in the past, we would try to widen roads and build more of them to build our way out of congestion. However, our revenue sources are constrained at both the state and local levels. On the other hand, the costs for automobile reliance is also soaring.

We have a new challenges, and need new solutions. 5What is Travel Demand Management?Managing travel demand is about providing travelers, regardless whether they drive alone, with travel choices, such as work location, route, time of travel and mode. (FHWA, 2006)As we are unable to build roads fast enough to accommodate growth and demand, travel demand management begins to play a more vital role in congestion reduction, safety and overall system preservation. (RAPC TDM Proposal, 2010)

In a broad sense, travel demand management is to provide travelers with effective choices to improve travel reliability. 6PhasesRAPC is completing the program in five phases.Phase 1: Employer Selection.Phase 2: Data Collection.Phase 3: Commuter Choice Decision Support System Guidance Tool Completion.Phase 4: TDM Technique Selection and ImplementationPhase 5: Annual Evaluation.Phase 2: Data Collection Two Studies: Traffic Count Commuter Survey

Purposes of Phase 2:Identify travel characteristics of Pinecrest Center commuters;Collect information for Commuter Choice Decision Support System Guidance Tool; Develop a framework of a coordinated, integrated and balanced commuter choice program and strategy.
