ICMR conducted the perception survey intwo phases:THE FIRST PHASE: In the frst phase
o the survey, ICMR generated a list o 500B-schools across India. The list o B-schools
was prepared based on a secondary studyconducted by ICMR. The 500 B-schools
were divided according to geographicalzones, i.e. North, South, East and West.(Masscom institutes & institutes oeringonly 1 year certifed courses have not been
covered under the purview o the survey).The list was then circulated amongst a selectset o 25 B-schools proessors (having work/industry experience o at least 5 years) toname Indias Cult Status B-schools. Then,
a list o the top 30 B-schools named by these25 B-school proessors (based on the re-quency o responses) was generated.
SECOND PHASE: In this phase each othe 30 B-schools were urther scrutinizedbased on the ollowing parameters:l
Global Exposure: which included ele-ments like student/aculty exchange pro-grammes, international linkages,et al;
l Fun Factor: which included elementslike debates, quizzes and other manage-ment based activities;
l Course Contents: which included ele-ments like the number o subjects/papers,
regular upgradation o syllabus,et al;l Faculty: which included elements like
student/aculty ratio, total number o per-manent/visiting aculty members, acultymembers with relevant industry experi-ence,et al;
l Inrastructure: which included ele-ments like campus area/location, numbero classrooms, library, wi-f campus, lap-top acilities, caeteria,et al;
l Personality Development: which in-cluded elements like overall personalitydevelopment, role plays and presentations,
enhancing communication skills,et al;l Student Profles/Admissions: includ-
ing elements like student qualifcation,background, age distribution,et al;
l Research and Writings: including ele-ments like internal journals published,newsletters/magazines/books published,aculty contribution,et al;
lIndustry Interace: including elementslike number o Management Develop-ment Programmes/ Executive Develop-ment Programmes/seminars, joint corpo-rate training workshops, projects under-taken with corporations,et al;
l Placement and Packages: includingelements like number o students placedeach year, domestic/international place-ments, maximum salary (both domestic
and international), number o companies both domestic and international visit-ing the campus,et al;
lAlumni: elements like alumni profle/
strength, alumni meets, career pathstaken by the alumni, alumni network andassociation,et al;
l Parental Perspective: including paren-tal perspective on respective B-schools.
The respondents or the parameters givenabove were students, aculty members, par-ents and corporations, primarily rom theHR departments (as they recruit and interact
most with B-school graduates) and CMOs(Chie Marketing Ofcers). The parameters
were divided amongst the respondents onthe basis o relevance. However, the ratingsor parameters o inrastructure and aculty
were collected both rom students and ac-ulty members.
The sample size o students interviewedpan-India, was around 800. Students coveredunder the purview o the study were primar-ily current management students and man-agement graduates. Faculty members o
esteemed organisations such as IMT (Gha-ziabad), IIT-D (Delhi), IIFT and otherswere interviewed on the parameters o Fac-ulty, Inrastructure, Course Content andResearch and Writings. Apart rom this,ICMR also conducted interviews with thecorporate HR&CMO raternity to gain in-puts on the parameters o Industry Interace,Placement &Packages and Alumni. Theindustry/HR proessionals and CMOs cov-ered under the research were rom wellknown organisations in the industries obanking &fnancial services, automobiles,telecom, retail, inormation technology, con-sulting and various others.
Each o the above mentioned respondentswere asked to rate the top 30 B-schools onrespective parameters on a scale o 1-10 (1being worst & 10 being best). The fnal rank-ing is based on the cumulative mean scoreon each o the parameters. However, sincethe parameters o aculty&inrastructure
were both rated by students &aculty mem-bers, we have shown the cumulative scores.The parameter o parental perspective wasrated by parents o students who have pur-sued or are currently pursuing a manage-ment course.
A separate perception sur vey was con-ducted by ICMR amongst management stu-dents to identiy the Power B-schools apartrom the Cult Status B-schools as mentionedabove. Students were shown a list o 100 B-schools (excluding the top 30 Cult Status B-
schools as ranked in the ollowing pages) andthen asked to name their most preerred B-
schools. The students were also asked to ratethe B-school named by them on a scale o1-5 (1 being worst and 5 being best). Basedon the overall perception scores ICMR gen-erated (with institutes being rated a minimum
score o 3 on the Likert Scale) the list o 70Power B-schools. 4Ps

Mhd:4Ps B&M, in association with the Indian Council or Market Research (ICMR), conducted a pan-India perception survey on the upcom-ing B-schools. The survey was conducted amongst management students (fnal year students; sample size o 200) and aculty members(sample size o 20) o several management institutes across the country. The respondents were asked to name one upcoming B-schoolbased on the parameters o inrastructure, placement, packages and industry interace. The requency o responses helped us to draw alist o the 50 upcoming B-schools in the country which could be the most sought ater ones in the near uture.

was conducted amongst education consultants,industry experts and renowned educationists. Theexperts were asked to name and list a ew upcominguniversities in the country based on the extent ocourses and academic programs covered, afliations
accredited to them, brand equity and media visibil-ity. Based on the responses the list below o theprivate universities o the uture was generated.
Apart rom the private universities a separate list
o 25 most promising engineering colleges was alsogenerated. This particular list was created to in-crease the scope o our study. Coaching centres,students currently pursuing an engineering courseand aculty members were covered under the pur-view o the study. An overall sample o 250 respon-dents were covered using a structured question-naire through telephonic and email techniques.The most popular private universities named bythese respondents were listed to give our readersthe 25 most promising engineering colleges 2012.
A lthough annual enrolments in higher education have grownsteadily at 6.3% over the last decade, the GER (Gross En-rolment Ratio is a statistical measure used by the United Nations
to measure education index of a nation) in India still stands at12.4%, way below the global average o 26%. Even the HumanDevelopment Index or the year 2011 ranked India at 134, oneo the lowest among the League o Nations. This clearly indi-cates that India requires more institutions to address the issueo accessibility, which is only possible i government encour-ages entrepreneurs to set up private colleges and universities.
A good news is that, according to a recent report (PrivateUniversities in India: An Investment in National Development)
by management consultancy group Parthenona, private univer-sities in the country have more than doubled in the last six years.
While the country had 20 private universities prior to 2005, thatfgure surged to 107 last year. However, the bad news is thatIndia still ranks one o the lowest in terms o number o uni-
versities per population. While US has nearly 2,500 universitiesor a population o about 313 million, India has a little over 350universities catering to a population o 1.3 billion. Even Ger-many and UK have over 350 and 125 universities or a populationo 80 million and 60 million respectively. Experts estimate thatIndia needs 1,000 universities more and the higher education
enrolment ratio to be increased by 20% in the next 10 years, tomeet the challenges o countrys development.
This certainly compels the government to make room ornon-governmental educational institutions to shoulder thisresponsibility while, at the same time, increasing its eorts tostrengthen and empower the existing universities. And not justgovernment, even educational institutions, just like corpora-tions, need to look inward and at the paradigm shits happeningall over the world. Apart rom the act that we are now lookingat an increasingly multi-polar global environment and a shitrom a single ideology, it is a oregone conclusion that leaderso tomorrow will need a radically dierent approach as com-
pared to their predecessors. Hence, it is important or educa-tional institutions to realise that they have a critical role to playin building these leaders, and to understand how they can ul-fll their role responsibly, as it also links to their own long-termsustainability.
