RANJI Dear Kranjians, In Kranji, we talk about the importance of creating a unique school experience for all students. As you read through the first newsletter of 2013, you will be greeted with an array of interesting programmes and activities. These activities, such as the Secondary 2 and 3 level camps, not only allow students to build relationships with their peers, but also provide them with opportunities to showcase leadership qualities such as empathy, respect and responsibility. In this issue, you will also see the emphasis of values in the articles on CCE Week, Service-Learning and the partnerships with parents and alumni, who have come forward to role-model the values we hope to see in our students. I hope that we can create a ripple effect in spreading the message to the rest of the community, that values are important and they are to be celebrated. I also urge all students to learn from the success stories of their seniors who have excelled in the recent national examinations. Get some studying tips from them and see if these strategies can help you in your learning. When you display a willingness to learn, you will find yourself engaged in learning and enjoying the learning process. Remember that the great educator, John Dewey, once said that “Education is not just preparation for life; education is life itself.” It is encouraging to see our alumni coming back and giving back to benefit the juniors. This is indeed our school values of responsibility and compassion in action. I hope that this will in turn inspire the juniors to do the same when it is their turn to give back. We would also like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to the long-term commitment and support given by the SAC and the PSG. Lastly, I would like to welcome new staff joining the Kranji family. I look forward to working with all the staff to synergize as a team and ‘serving with heart, values and purpose to bring out the best in every child’. Have a great 2013 ahead! GRADUATES’SuCCESS STORiES

1What is your success formula? Please share with us some effective strategies that you have adopted to achieve academic

success.

Many students think that the secret to success at the O Level Examination is “mugging”. I beg to differ. I believe the secret to it is understanding. Understand what you’ve been taught and naturally, you’ll remember it and be able to apply it. After all, the purpose of an examination is to test your understanding, right? For me, I created my own notes with many colours and graphics. That’s my very own study method that has worked well for me; you just have to find yours.

- Gracia Tian ShuningNgee Ann Polytechnic

My success formula is a very simple one which is to work hard. I made it a point to hand in my homework punctually and revise the topics taught after every lesson. Time management is also very important. I constantly reminded myself not to procrastinate as it would waste a lot of time. Every minute is precious. Also, clarifying my doubts with the teachers during consultation also helped me achieve academic success because understanding the concepts of each topic is very important.

- Ang Jia Xuan, Anderson Junior College

2 W h a t w e r e some di f f icul t ies and challenges you encountered and how did you

o v e r c o m e them?

The incredible amount of homework was a huge challenge! Coupled with IP Coaching and late lessons, I had limited time to do revision and complete my D&T journal. Furthermore, there were also times when I played computer games until the wee hours of the night and regretted doing that the very next day. However, with perseverance, determination and support from friends, I eventually got through the tough times. Despite the hectic schedule, I took time off to hang out with friends and pursue my personal interest too. That little bit of personal time helped me to recharge for the next round of intensive revision.

- Jeremy Ng Yi Zher, Pioneer JC

Some of the difficulties I encountered were time management, uncertainty about some topics and an inability to fully concentrate in class. To overcome them, I spent less time on the Internet and stayed back in school to revise to avoid the distractions at home. I clarified my doubts with my teachers and read up more on what I was unsure of by referring to other sources, such as the Internet and books.

- Ten Jia Tian, Ngee Ann Poly

3 What advice do you have for your juniors, especially the current batch of graduating

students?

You must never give up. No matter how bad your results are, you must always persevere. Another tip is to study consistently and start now. Stop procrastinating and manage your time wisely. Practice makes perfect and don’t stop practising! You should make good use of all the resources

given by the teachers. Last but not least, good luck to the current batch of graduating students. All the best to you in your examination.

- Ang Jia Xuan, Anderson Junior College

Practice really makes a difference. The more you practise, the better you will be. Once you see the results, all your hardwork will be paid off. It is quite satisfying. Try to draw up a study time-table which highlights the main things that you need to do. It really helps as it will help you track your progress. Clear all your doubts with your respective subject teachers as soon as possible. Do not feel shy about it. Your teachers are more than willing to help you.

- Lee Yu Xuan, Ngee Ann Polytechnic

My friends, particularly those from 4K4 and 4K5, helped me a lot in my studies. My Sciences were never good, so I always went to them for help in Physics and Chemistry. They were

4 Who are some people who have helped you achieve academic success and what would you

like to say to them?

also busy with their own work and CCAs, but they did not mind answering my questions and explaining concepts to me. To all my friends, I owe my success to you. Wherever you may be, you are awesome! I’m glad you have been so much a part of my life.

- Samantha Goh, Anglo Chinese Junior College

I want to thank my family and friends for standing by me and pushing me to work hard for good results at the O Level Examination. I would like to express my gratitude to all my teachers for their patience, advice and encouragements. It has indeed been a wonderful and unforgettable learning journey for me at Kranji!

- Ler Puay Him, Nanyang Junior College

My incredibly supportive family was my source of motivation. Their love, care and concern spurred me to realise my potential. My teachers definitely played a key role in helping me achieve good grades. They tirelessly answered my questions, patiently helped me clear my doubts and skilfully equipped me with effective answering techniques. Their unwavering belief in my capability and constant encouragements motivated me to give my best. My close friends comforted and encouraged me when I was disheartened by my less-than-satisfactory school results. We were each other’s pillar of strength and we motivated each other as we worked towards our common goal and crossed the finishing line together!

Our Singapore ConversationBy Mr Koh Yi-Huak

On 8 March, Kranji staff came together to take part in our very own version of Our Singapore Conversation. We enjoyed heartfelt, spirited discussions about what we appreciate about Singapore, our aspirations for Singapore in 2030 and the role we play in school as we work together to nurture the Singapore of tomorrow. Despite the multiple and differing perspectives, we discovered that we share a common vision and were encouraged by positive energy and passion within the fraternity. Through the discussions, we felt a greater appreciation for Singapore and gained a better understanding of the tension in education as well as the complexities in meeting the needs of different stakeholders.

SCHOOLPROGRAMMES

Positive PsychologyBy Mr David Cheng

At the 2012 Kranji Staff Retreat, teachers got together in the spirit of learning. Synonymous to the theme of the retreat ‘Learning Key Basics; Forging New Chapters’, teachers embarked on a new learning journey into Positve Psychology by Dr Martin Segliman to help make students’ lives more fulfilling and meaningful. During the workshop which focused on resilience, strengths and positive emotions, teachers explored an array of strategies that allowed them to engage students in the classroom. They also explored the means and ways of integrating Positive Psychology into their lesson planning to explicitly and deliberately create meaning in learning for students.

Before the Secondary One Orientation, all of us were very shy. However, we got to know each other as we took part in the various orientation activities, and my class became united. What I enjoyed most about the orientation was the cheering event. All of us were very enthusiastic and we cheered as one.

- Tonya Heng (1K3)

I enjoyed the Secondary One Orientation activities. I had a whale of a time cheering along with my classmates. Some of the activities were quite tiring and challenging. Nevertheless, it was a really great experience and a good way to get to know the school.

- Racheal Low (1K4)

In January 2013, the Secondary Two students participated in a 2D1N Leadership Camp. Most of the camp activities took place on the sunny island of Sentosa, where they completed team challenges, Amazing Race style. The students also enjoyed the kayaking session tremendously. The camp concluded with a CIP activity --- collecting recyclable items at the neighbouring blocks near our school.

It was a camp that was very much anticipated by the whole class. Prior to the camp, there were on-going discussions about what we would expect during the camp – charismatic camp instructors, conquering the high elements and of course, spending time with one another!

The journey there was arduous – not only because of the congestion during the peak hour, but also because we could not wait to get down to all the activities! However, we were kept entertained throughout the journey by the melodious voices of our classmates. That definitely made the journey much more bearable! The bus ride was also an opportunity for us to get to know one another better – for example, we found out that some of us did not sleep the night before due to anxiety and anticipation for the camp!

Upon reaching the camp, we were introduced to our camp instructors. We were sad that the class had to be re-organised into two teams, but soon got over that and basked in the fun and exciting activities lined up for us. The first activity we embarked on was the high elements. It was challenging as we could see fear engraved on some faces, but we promised one another that we would encourage and support one another through this. Lo and behold, most of us managed to attempt the abseiling, rock wall climbing as well as the Burma Bridge rather smoothly. What warmed us most were the constant cheers that we gave one another as encouragement!

Dinner and lunch was nothing much to rave about. We simply devoured the food. After all, we had spent one entire day on physically gruelling activities – and aren’t all teenagers supposed to eat more?

We looked forward to night time because that was the only time when we could come together in our dormitories as a class and talked about our experiences. Even when it was time for “lights-out”, most of us could not sleep, so we whispered to one another. There were hushes throughout the dormitory to remind us to keep quiet. Soon, sounds of snores and tossing were heard. It seemed that everyone was tired from the day’s activities and that they were recharging to get ready for another fun-filled day!

On the second day, we had a chance to kayak. Some of us had never tried it before and therefore were a little afraid. But again, with reassurance from other team mates, we managed to overcome the initial fear. It was definitely good to be out in the open sea, with only our partner to talk to and rely on. It really taught us how to overcome our fears and also to trust our partners! It was also heartwarming to see some of us rendering help to others who were sea-sick due to the strong currents out in the open sea.

Very soon, it was time for us to bid farewell to the campsite and the camp instructors. It was not a teary goodbye, but definitely an emotional one. After all, this was the place where we forged strong bonds with our classmates whom we are going to work closely with for the next two years. Not forgetting also, our teachers who joined us in the activities.

SCHOOLEVENTS

CCE WeekThe new school year was kicked off with the Character and Citizenship Programme that was specially customised for all students. The classes in each level were engaged in different activities to develop leadership skills, inculcate values and gain a better understanding of Singapore’s progress and challenges. Mentors facilitated meaningful discussions on the school values with the students. Classes also planned and executed their Service-Learning projects at various old folks’ homes. For the National Education learning journeys, the students visited a range of interesting places all over the island to learn about the challenges Singapore faces in a highly competitive world.

Service Learning at Econ Medicare CentreIn the first week of January 2013, the Secondary 4 and 5 students carried out Service-Learning projects at elderly homes in the Southwest district. During the planning stage, we ensured that our activities would be sufficiently challenging to keep the elderly engaged and entertained, yet not too taxing or tiring for them. After much careful consideration, we decided to perform a few songs with simple dance routines and teach the elderly origami. We spent some time practising the songs that we had chosen, and bought colourful origami paper.

On the day itself, we executed our plan and managed to get the elderly to sing along with us. They also enjoyed the origami session and were keen to learn from us. We were touched by their active participation and learning spirit. We were glad that our hard work in preparing for the activities had been fruitful. Above all, it was truly heartwarming to know that we had managed to get the elderly to smile!

From this experience, we realised that there are many elderly in the society who need our care and concern. As students, we must continue to reach out to them to make them feel that we respect them for their contributions to Singapore, and that we love and care for them!

This year’s Sport’s Fiesta was organised on 2 March 2013. Students had two main events to look forward to – the 3.2-km run and carnival games.

In the 3.2-km run, the runners pushed themselves to their limits to come in as one of the top 10 runners. The others also tried their best to earn a point for their house by crossing the finishing line before the stipulated time was up.

As for the carnival games, students enjoyed themselves as every station was fun and interesting. Despite being very exhausted after the run, they were very enthusiastic and eager to play the games.

I would like to thank the alumni, PSG, teachers and student leaders for putting in so much effort and time to organise this meaningful and fun-filled event. Without them, this year’s Sports Fiesta would not have been a success.

We set up a food and drink stall to raise funds for needy students. In addition, we participated enthusiastically in the Road Run. Most of us ran with our children and we clearly enjoyed the bonding time. It certainly was a bonus when our participation contributed points to the House our children belong to.

We also had an informal yet enjoyable time interacting with the teachers. We joined the teachers in learning the famous Kranji Mass Dance – 5678. To conclude the day, we chatted and mingled over a fruit buffet, which was specially prepared by the PSG.

Despite the unbearable heat, the competitors were all fired up. Before their races, they stretched to warm up their muscles and prepared themselves mentally to dash to the finish line! During the races, especially the 400m and 800m races, we could see the runners persevering and pushing themselves to their limits.

Each and every spectator on the gallery cheered when they saw their own house runners sprinting on the red synthetic track. When the runners crossed the line, they felt a great sense of achievement. The top three runners did not boast about their victory. Instead, they exhibited sportsmanship and gave every runner a comforting pat on the shoulder.

Parents and teachers also raced hard in the 8x50m race. It was a rare opportunity to see our teachers put down their red pens, put on their running shoes and hit the tracks!

Kranji IN TOUCH Newsletter 2013

At Kranji, premium is placed on Character and Citizenship Education (CCE). Kranji has a very comprehensive CCE framework which is supported by integrated platforms in delivering a holistic education to Kranjians. The school adopts the Know Good, Love Good, Do Good Framework for whole-school approach to Character Education. The four main tenets in Character Education in Kranji are:1. School as a caring and rewarding moral community2. Teachers as role models and character educators3. Character education as everyday lessons, in and out of the classrooms4. Parents and community as partners in character education

The lessons integrate many components and include the following:– Values Education– Social-Emotional Competencies– Education & Career Guidance– Sexuality Education– Values in Action (Service-Learning and Community

Involvement Programme)– Habits of Mind– 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens– Special lifeskills programmes such as Financial

Literacy, Time Management, Preparation for Secondary School Education and Managing Stress

In terms of assessment, the school uses a variety of modes to assess students’ acquisition of values. The assessment includes projects, reflection tasks and presentations. We have also introduced a 360 degree Values and Social-Emotional Competencies Assessment which is aligned with the school values and the Social-Emotional Competencies that we would like to see in all our students. The purpose is to give students a chance to reflect as well as to provide them with feedback from their peers and teachers, to help them improve their performance and Social-Emotional Competencies. It also allows the school to understand the areas of need for the students, set aside resources and to continually improve its processes and programmes to meet these needs.

We are continually seeking to improve the programme that we offer our students and hope to tap on our partners and stakeholders to support us in Career Guidance and other lifeskills programmes that we will run for the students. Parents and partners are welcomed to contact us if there believe they have something to contribute to enhance the educational experience of Kranjians.
