HAVE A SAFE AND RELAXING HOLIDAY. MERRY CHRISTMAS.

From the Principal

Sports Presentation Day

The inaugural Sports Presentation Assembly celebrated the fantastic achievements of our sports stars. Mr Pat Marando, 2016 Sports Coordinator, did a marvellous job preparing and then hosting the event. It was great to see so many parents in attendance and the entire school were inspired by an ex-student, Johnno Cotterill, who repre-sented Australia at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics in Waterpolo. Well done to all students who were recognised on the day and all our dedicated staff who ensure our boys excel in the sporting arena. A huge thank you to Mr Marando for his dedication and enthusiasm for sport.

Presentation Day

On Tuesday this week, we celebrated our 68th Presentation Day. Academic excellence was on show for all to see and celebrate. Our students should be extremely proud of their performance this year and it really shows in their reports and results. It was wonderful to

see our students recognised for all their hard work in the classroom and across our school and community! The attendance of parents was absolutely outstanding and I really enjoyed meeting all who attended to join us in celebrat-ing with their son’s. We were enthralled by a presentation from Elpi Chrysostomou, class of 1993, who is currently working as a barrister. He remembers Randwick Boys’ High School

very, very fondly. Thanks to the Creative and Performing Arts and Mathematics faculties for organising the day. It was a wonderful day and we enjoy celebrating the achievements of our students.

Staffing 2016

We have had many changes in staff dur-ing 2016. Only this week we were informed that another member of staff will be leav-ing us at the end of 2016. Mr Pat Marando has been an institution at Randwick Boys’ High School for the past 20 years. He began as a fresh faced PDHPE teacher, under the superb mentoring of two other great PDHPE teachers and men, Mr Tim Soden and Mr Steve Cargill. When Mr Soden and Mr Cargill retired, Mr Marando stepped up, as the senior mentor, guiding Mr Jackson and more recently, Mr Noreika. Mr Marando has contributed greatly to our school, our traditions and our students. He leaves with a heavy heart, torn between teaching at our amazing school and starting at a school close to his home and young family. I would like to wish him well at his new school and congratulate him on mentoring our younger staff and even younger students. You will be missed!

Mr Jesse Douglass has also decided to leave our school and Science Faculty and take up a position at another school. Mr Douglass has been with us for the last few years and has impressed all with his diligence, commitment and subject knowledge. Mr Douglass will leave a big hole in the Science faculty; however, I am confi-dent that his replacement will do his best to fill Mr Douglass’ shoes.

I would also like to thank all our non-permanents and casual staff who have assisted us and our students, during 2016. Your efforts have been greatly appreciated.

Holidays

Finally, I would like to thank all our students, staff and parents for their assistance with everything we have achieved in 2016. We have made changes, consolidated certain areas and abolished some activities. 2016 has been a very busy but very rewarding and success-ful year. I would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday and a very Merry Christmas.

I look forward to 2017 and all the challenges and rewards that it will bring. Thank you for assisting us to help, nurture and teach your son’s.

Final Chess Report for 2016

On Wednesday December 7, six students went to Scots College to play chess.

Our students were Warren Song, Ruben Samer, Xavier Leal Smith, Veron Singh, Ethan Lee Chalk and Toby Poulos.

The competition consisted of seven rounds. We had two teams of three students.

There were 37 teams in the competition.

From the results table, you can see that our A team came sixth and our B team came twenty-third.

Congratulations to all our chess players. Both teams had amaz-ing wins.

We look forward to chess becoming more popular in the school and that the new students will maintain the already high standard of chess being played at our school.

From Around the Grounds

RBHS volleyball “3 from 3”

The 14s volleyball team totally domi-nated their opponents for the second week in a row. Coach Ms Yiangou was very happy with the boys’ performance, mentioning: “They are learning to play as a team, and Kade Cummings has really made a difference to the team’s performance.”

The 1sts and 2nds finally won both grades with some individual skill and excellent team work. Coach Mr Nguyen and the team’s hard work is really paying off. Keep up the great work!

RBHS 1sts back on track

RBHS found their winning ways again with a terrific performance against a very well organised Ashfield unit. RBHS showed why they are title contenders, giving Ashfield little time on the ball with some brutal defence and electrifying attack, win-ning 4-1. Coach Mr Bladwell stated after the game: “It’s not about one or two guys. This competition is too good for two guys to beat you. Getting that team effort with con-tributions from lots of guys; game in game out, that’s going to be good for us.”

The 2nds came close, but were spoilt by a late goal by Ashfield to claim victory on the day. In the 14s, it was a very lop-sided contest where Ashfield totally dominated, winning 6-nil. The good news is that the 1sts and the 14s have qualified to make the finals next year.

Bragging rights go to Ashfield and Asquith

RBHS 2nds’ undefeated run came to an end against the favourites. It was an incred-ibly close finish with Ashfield hanging in to win the match despite Randwick’s tireless effort in the field.

The 14s showed some fighting spirit in the field, claiming two early wickets, but it wasn’t

to be, with Asquith regrouping and reaching the total with 5 wickets to spare. Coach Mr Hatton was very happy with the performance of his team and mentioned: “The boys put themselves into a position to get a result today. It’s been a huge learning curve for some of the younger players, but they are progressing well, gaining from these experiences.”

14s winning streak continues

Another great performance from the 14s to stretch their winning streak to 11. The 2nds found the going tough, going down in straight sets.

Coach Mr Burke reported: “The winning streak of the 14s is all due to their impressive speed and incredible poise in the critical moments of the matches. This has helped the team continue on their winning ways.”

Tough day at the office for the futsal teams

The Ashfield teams were prepared for a physical encounter in all grades. In their last meeting, RBHS took all the points and were keen to turn things around this time. In the 1sts match, RBHS started really poorly, allowing Ashfield to set the pace of the game and opening the scoring. Both teams showed lots of intensity, and there were some brutal tackles throughout the match. Despite trailing for most of the match, the RBHS team fought back to level the scores late in the game. The game finished in a 3-3 draw, despite RBHS creating many more chances than their opponents in the second half.

The 15s A team showed no mercy, pounding their opponents 7-nil in a dominating performance. Coach Mr Brown said: “The whole team per-formance was positive, from the start we showed good organisation and made it difficult for Ashfield to create anything.”

In the 15s B match the RBHS team took an early lead, only to let two late goals in to draw the match.

RBHS basketball 1sts and 15 As dominate

Both the 1sts and the 15s were far too good for the Ashfield teams. In the 1sts game, the RBHS team’s high press forced Ashfield into coughing up the ball 12 times in the first quarter. This allowed RBHS to dominate possession and unleash their deadly transition game. The 15s game was one-way traffic with Brian Hong leading his team to another massive victory over Ashfield.

Oztag teams dig deep

The 1sts game was a game of two halves, with Ashfield playing their strongest team in the second half. With the game running away from Ashfield, they introduced a number of changes to their team for the second half. It was a tactic that paid off. Ashfield clawed their way back into the game and into the lead to take the game in a close one 10-9. Due to a number of players away with work experience, there was no 2nds match. In the 15s, RBHS continued to impress with some great combination plays, leaving Ashfield wondering where they were. Coach Mr George was extremely impressed with the effort the boys were putting in and mentioned: “The boys have what it takes to win this competition in both grades, and it is a question of how much they want it.”
