Safety.
6th Grade-RESPECT Performance – Anti-bullying
7th Grade-Social Media Presentation by Law Enforcement Officer
8th Grade-Dillon’s House/Coalition RX
6th Grade:
EGMS is introducing the Purple Hands Project to 6th Graders with an assembly. This is an
anti-bullying/tolerance program where students, parents, faculty, and community members pledge
to stop bullying and violence in our school. There will be a play performed by RESPECT, entitled,
“Scraps”. In this program, actors interact with the students throughout the play to educate them
how to identify bullying behaviors and healthy strategies they can use if they are being bullied, or if
they see bullying at their school. This play specifically addresses the dynamics of relational aggres-
sion; using relationships to hurt someone (i.e. – gossip, rumors, cyber-bullying). During the talk-back
portion, students have the opportunity to practice techniques to stop and prevent bullying during a
fun and safe role-play.
Throughout the week, students will be asked to take the purple hands pledge, a pledge
where students make a personal commitment to not use words or hands to hurt themselves or oth-
ers. EGMS students will be participating in various activities throughout the week that promote the
Purple Hands message. Please talk with your children throughout this week about what they are
doing and take the pledge yourself.
“I will not use my hands or my words for hurting myself or others”
7th Grade: Social Media Presentation by Law Enforcement
A law enforcement officer will speak to the students about their social media footprint, stay-
ing safe online, etc. The presentation will focus on appropriate use, staying safe and the dangers of
social media. This is a hard hitting presentation and parents are invited to attend if they would like
to. Please contact the office in advance if you plan to attend.
8th Grade: Dillon’s House and Coalition RX
8th graders will attend a powerful presentation from Dillon’s House. This presentation tells
the story of Dillon and how his life was taken by an unintentional prescription drug overdose.

Since his death, Dillon’s father and Dillon’s former pre-school director, Carey Pomykata, have been
working to inform kids and parents of our community about the realities of the misuse of prescrip-

Halloween Reminders
Since Halloween falls on a school night, we wanted
to share a few reminders:
--Students should not come to school dressed for
Halloween. We know this is an exciting day for kids
and we will try to have some fun by doing our annu-
al staff costume walk in the morning.
--Please do not allow your students to bring a bunch
of candy to school. We ask that Halloween candy
be left at home.
--Even though it is an exciting night, please make
sure students get enough sleep and are ready for
school the next day.

Key features of the new digital program: • CONVENIENT - Redeem any-where, anytime within 14 days of pur-chase • EASY TO USE - No more clipping or sending Box Tops to school • REAL TIME - Your school's earn-ings are automatically updated online • EXTRA CASH - Access special bo-nus offers on top of your everyday Box Tops earnings Want more information? Learn more about the new digital Box Tops program at www.BTFE.COM
We have a school-wide goal of $1,000 for the 2019-20 school year and we need your help to get there. We hope you will download the app and give the new pro-gram a try. Students in grades 6th - 8th completed
their MAP assessment earlier this fall. The MAP
tests are closely aligned to the state tests that
are administered in the spring. The state tests
are reported to the state department of educa-
tion. The fall MAP results allow us to track stu-
dent growth during the year and act as a predic-
tor for student performance on the state tests.
The state tests will be administered in
late March-mid April to all grades. The second
session of MAP will be given to 6th - 8th graders
in early May.

Flu Vaccines
The CDC recommends getting a flu vaccine before flu begins spreading in your community. It takes
about two weeks after vaccination for antibodies to develop in the body that protect against the flu, so
make plans to get vaccinated early in the fall, before flu season begins. The CDC recommends that
people get a flu vaccine by the end of October, if possible. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/index.htm

Band News Mr. Johnson
Jazz Bands – The audition process for both the Grandview Jazz Bands has completed and what an
amazing 3 weeks it was! We had another record number of students audition this year making the
decisions extremely difficult. A huge thank you to every student who auditioned. It is so exciting to
see such a huge interest in jazz!
For those students who were selected into State of Mind, we will begin our normal rehearsal schedule
on September 30 and continue on Mondays and Wednesdays for the remainder of the year. Stu-
dents should arrive by 6:50am each morning so rehearsals can begin promptly at 7:00. Attendance
at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory.
For those students wishing to participate in Jazz Expos, we will begin our normal rehearsal schedule
on October 1. Weekly rehearsals will be Tuesdays from 2:30-4:00pm and Thursdays from 7:30-
8:00am. Rehearsals will continue through the remainder of the year. Students should arrive as early
as possible so all rehearsals can start on time. Students in Grand Marquee are excused from Thurs-
day morning rehearsals. Students in EGMS sports should check with their coach to see about the
possibility of arriving at practice by 4:00pm. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is man-
datory.
October 29 Concert – On Tuesday, October 29, all the band students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade will be
performing their first concert of the year. It will take place in the EGMS gym and starts at 7:00 PM. All

December 13 - 6th Grade Band @ EHS!!!– On Friday, December 13, the 6th grade band has been invit-
ed to perform with the EHS high school band at a varsity basketball game. More details will be sent
home with the students as we get closer to the event, but students should plan to report to the EHS
Auditorium by 5:45 PM. Students will then play for half time and the 2nd half of the Girls varsity game
against Nebraska City. Students will be dismissed following the end of the girls game. Participating
students will be admitted to the game free, but parents and siblings will need to pay normal admis-
sion or show their Elkhorn Activity Passes. Dress for this event will be jeans, tennis shoes, and their
black EGMS Music Polo shirt (tucked in!). This is always a fun evening for the students, so please put
it on your calendar!
Private Lessons – At Elkhorn Grandview Middle School, we try to provide every student with as much
time and individual attention as possible to make them the best musicians they can be. However, for
those students that either desire more intense musical pursuits or need that extra attention to contin-
ue improving their skills, seeking a private instructor for your student is an excellent option. Besides
guaranteed one-on-one instruction on a regular basis, usually weekly, private instructors are experts
on their individual instruments and can bring that professional expertise to your student. While most
private instructors teach out of a studio at a music store or their home, some will drive to your home
to provide the lessons. There are many private teachers available with varying personalities, areas of
emphasis, and years of experience so matching your student with the right teacher is very important.
If you are interested in private instruction for your student, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. John-
son at any time.

District RemindersTECH SAVVY PARENT TIPS - APPS TO KNOW
ClassLink is a single sign-on platform that allows students to use one username and password to access online resources already being used in the classroom, including online textbooks, Moodle courses, and more. ClassLink saves all school related passwords within the security of your ClassLink password
ClassLink is a safe, secure way for students to connect with applications and resources. The website does not collect or share any personal student information, which is important to us. Best of all, it is very easy to use and is a great resource for students and families.
Information about getting started with Classlink for EPS students can be found here.
Classlink: Elkhorn Public Schools
The Elkhorn Public Schools District uses a student information system called PowerSchool. This is a web-based system with a mobile app option that is intended to provide parents and students with a tool to review student progress. An important feature in PowerSchool is parent/guardian access.
This feature offers real-time access to attendance, class information and the option to update student information easily. Students in grades 3-12 also have the ability to view current grades.
PowerSchool also offers parents a single sign on method so they have the ability to link multiple student accounts together and access the accounts via one login and password.
Activity Scheduler: rSchool Calendar
To use the app, download Activity Scheduler in your phone’s app store and choose the your school based on the conference they are part of. To view and subscribe to any building’s calendar, click here. For reference, Elkhorn High School and all EPS middle schools are part of the Eastern Mid Conference and Elkhorn South High School is part of the Metro Conference.
EPS middle and high schools use on an online calendar called rSchool to track all events and activities. rSchool also has an app option for individuals to view their schools rSchool calendar and view events by date or by activity category.
PowerSchool App
Elkhorn Public Schools Policy 507.13—Internet Safety Policy was written in compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act.
