I ain’t down yet, and even if I was, you’d sure never hear it from me!

..as my little sister Alice and I would passion-ately belt out this song from The Unsinkable Molly Brown. We sang and danced in uni-son and still do today.

Ohh, I hate that word down, but I love the word UP, cuz UP means hope. And that’s what I got, hope, for someplace gooder, someplace.. I don’t know, that’s cleaner and shinier…ah hell, if I have to eat catfish heads all my life, can’t I have them off a plate once?

..In a red silk dress.. when there’s girl enough on me to wear one. And then, some day, with all my might and all my may..

I’m gonna learn to read and write I’m goan’ to see what there is to see, so if you go from nowhere on the road to somewhere and you meet anyone. You know it’s me.

I’m goan’ to move from place to place and find a house with a goldn stair, and if that house is red and has a big brass bed

I’m liiiivin’ there!

People ask me all the time, Kathleen, where do you get your energy, passion and zest for life?

Well, I can say, that my parents in their late 80’s are still dancing. I can say that my 78 year old aunts are doing Tai Chi, painting, traveling and visiting wineries. I could say that it’s because I am Italian, and Italians are always happy.

It’s all that, plus my inexhaustible curiosity of the body.

My efforts have become streamlined to where I have learned to use my brain in a way that is becoming more efficient in thought and movement.

It’s partly genetic, partly learned and un-learned behaviors that became habits.

That said, the ‘unsinkable’ song has been en-graved in my thoughts ever since I was a little girl.

It seems that for all these years I truly be-lieved I was unsinkable.

It gave me permission to believe that I could do anything and be anything that I wanted to be.

Today, that is how I feel and have learned to carry myself. I know this conscious way of changing my thoughts kept the pointless and meaningless crap out of my brain that was taking up way too much room and wasted energy.

I did learn to read and write. I traveled the world ‘to see what there is to see’. I have ‘moved from place to place’ and found a house with a golden stair. I painted the door red. It had a big brass bed, and I lived there!

“Hope, that’s just what I have, hope for some-place better”. My song and dance continues.

I realize now that as Alice and I would sing and dance, the underlying emotion felt by the words was the key to impressing the brain and has literally cemented new neuro pathways. I created a belief and attitude that has been the fuel for my passion.

“ I AIN’T DOWN YET”A Story of Hope

Page 5: RANCHO SANTA FE MAGAZINE

I knew that somewhere deep inside of me, there was this little genius baby ready to ex-plore this wonderful thing called life. Know-ing full well that my continued curiosity would keep the fire burning I knew I was meant to teach and inspire women back to their core, as I continued my own journey to the center of my true core, my whole being.

This personal journey required a tremen-dous amount of hope. Hope that I would eventually find the pathway to my purpose in this life.

The best description for Hope comes from one of my favorite books “No Man is an Is-land” by Thomas Moore.

‘Hope is proportionate to detachment. It brings our souls into the state of the most per-fect detachment. In doing so, it restores all val-ues by setting them in their right order.’

Hope empties our hands in order that we may work with them.

It shows us that we have something to work for, and teaches us how to work for it.

If my intelligence is a gift from God, then I must show my trust by making use of my in-telligence.

If my freedom is a gift, I must show my trust by making use of my free will and let hope purify and strengthen my human liberty and raise me to the autonomy of this beautiful God given human life experience.’

Because of hope, my path started to unfold more and more. I have learned to monitor my thoughts and use my intelligence which has molded me into the person I am today.

We are genetically capable to make changes. We are not destined to a life of unpleasant childhood or past experiences unless chosen.

We must stop telling that old story to our friends, family and therapists.

I knew I was evolving when I got in an ar-gument once with a ‘therapist’ because I told him I could change my life with my thoughts and knowledge of the brain to form new neuro networks and deactivate the unwanted brain neuro networks in hopes to promote healthier choices and behavior. He seemed a little perturbed and replied “then why are you here”? I left and never went back to a therapist.

According to Dr. Nesbitt, our mind is our “movement journal”. It’s where we keep track of what we have done; what we have observed being done and plans for how we might DO it in the future. It’s the human part of our brain.

My life thus far hasn’t been all roses for me. I have had several bumps along the way, kind of like skiing moguls. Sometimes the bump would knock me right off my bum. I pick myself up (sometimes with a helping hand) and get back on course.

The worst thing about falling is that when it happens too often you begin to lose hope. And the worst part is you don’t even realize it when it is happening. In my own life after a few too many bumps I began to lose hope. In order to avoid “falling” I moved towards safer territory. I evaluated my own move-ment journal.

As I traveled the world and working with women of all ages, teaching Pilates and core training, I noticed emptiness combined with a loss of hope and passion. Smiles were forced in agony. Slumped postures easily gave away to their emotional state. Foreheads revealed the direction of their thoughts, showing an unpleasantness in their lives.

My natural inclination was to help these women feel better somehow; to find one thing that they could feel good about to re-store their confidence. The more I looked, the easier it became to see something that could bring a smile to their face. It worked very well.

In 2008, I thought I finished ‘my journey’. I wanted to inspire other women.

I created the DVD, Pilates and Chocolate, to teach women how to manage and sculpt a beautiful body inside and out!

Little did I know that was the beginning of my journey and not the end. There was more.

I knew one hundred percent of only fifty per-cent of the core.

As I kept moving forward in my curiosity, I realized there was a whole other core, an in-ner core, the true core, and it had a bottom to it called the pelvic floor!

It wasn’t until my move to San Diego in 2009 that I made this discovery at a Pelvic Floor workshop taught by my current mentor and partner Dr. Theresa Nesbitt, The Movement Doctor. She had the missing piece, the true core which included the pelvic floor.

After multiple emails to Dr. Nesbitt, she recognized my relentless curiosity with the brains connection to the core and welcomed me into her world.

It has changed my brain, my body and my life - in that order.

Today I continue to mentor privately with Dr. Nesbitt on the latest studies and research on how the brain, true core and pelvic floor work together, and develop programs for women’s wellness.

Hope has allowed this wonderful journey to the center of my core to continue to flourish.

My hope also remains, to teach and inspire women, to help them with the return of their authentic smile. To restore a posture that exudes confidence and well-being. To redi-rect the forehead expression that now shouts hope and passion. To return to them the youthfulness they thought was gone forever.

I will do this as I have done for myself. Ex-plore their true core and pelvic floor, and re-discover their own inner beauty.

Together we will sculpt a mind, body and spirit, in the right order, from the inside out!

An ethical advisor will help his or her clients objectively evaluate an annu-ity before making a purchase. Un-

fortunately, however, some people who sell complicated annuity products may not be acting in such a transparent manner. In a recent case, an independent insurance agent in California received a felony-theft convic-tion after he sold a complicated annuity to an elderly woman who had exhibited signs of dementia, according to prosecutors.

The product in question was an indexed an annuity, a type of insurance product that pays interest that is linked to the perfor-mance of stock- and bond-market indexes. Many insurance agents like indexed an-nuities because they can high commissions from them. However, indexed annuities may also come with extremely steep early withdrawal penalties, which clients may not always be aware of.

In the aftermath of the case, insurance agents may now be more cautious when selling these annuities to older clients, since it appears that officials are willing to go after those who appear to be taking advantage of the elderly. Those who do continue to sell complicated annuity products will likely be making extra efforts to ensure that their cli-ents understand all of the annuity’s features, including any early withdrawal penalties.

This case also draws attention to the im-portance of fully researching any financial product before you buy. For those with older parents or other elderly loved ones, it also illustrates how critical it is to moni-tor your loved one’s financial situation and health status. If you notice signs that some-one is beginning to suffer from dementia, you may need to take steps to help them manage their affairs so that they don’t fall victim to pred-atory financial scams.

The Problem with AnnuitiesAre annuities a good vehicle for retirement planning? It depends on who you ask. While annuities offer the promise of a guaranteed income for life, they’re not always all they’re cracked up to be. Before you buy an annuity, you really need to work with your advisor to determine if it’s a good fit for your situation.

Dreaming pays off

“You’ve got to have a dream or two to get anywhere in life. It is very important to live your life with your feet on the ground but your head in the clouds. Never give up on your dream. They are what keep us alive inside. I definitely would not be here today, nor Osteria Francescana, if I didn’t hold onto my dreams and do everything in my power to make them true.”

~ Chef Massimo Bottura

Massimo Bottura opened Osteria Francescana in the heart of Modena in 1995. It was awarded its first Michelin star in 2002 and the second four years

later. Since then Osteria Francescana has engaged in a pro-found exploration of territory and tradition which expresses itself in the absolute concentration of flavours guided by conceptual premises.

“The synthesis of our kitchen relies on an intelligent evolu-tion of Italian traditions, reverence for technique and symbiotic relationships with our artisans.”

ALWAYS A REASON TO CELEBRATE!Let’s celebrate the joys of life and bask in the sun of success! Such delight is sure to be accompanied by only the best… Armand de

Brignac - a treasure that now can be yours.

Armand de Brignac is a highly refined cuveé available in three prestigious selections: Brut Gold, Champagne Rose, and Cham-

pagne Blanc de Blancs. These artisanal champagnes are produced in Champagne, France by the Cattier family, which has been cultivat-ing vineyards and overseeing the production of fine champagnes

since 1763. They have certainly mastered the art of crafting one of a kind Champagne that exceeds expectation beyond measure.

The family’s flagship Armand de Brignac product is the Brut Gold, which embodies the traditional French Champagne style of com-plex and full-bodied tastes that comes from a perfectly balanced

blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier wine. This prestige, award-winning cuveé is utterly divine, intermingling sweet flavors like apricots and apples with light floral aromas and a creamy

smooth after taste.

It is uniquely created by eight passionate vintners who craft it by hand using

old-world production techniques, and well honed winemaking

expertise that adheres to a heritage of exceptional quality.

Exceptional indeed.

Beyond the cuvée’s stunningly silky finish

that seems to linger for days, Armand de

Brignac’s Brut Gold is equitably a feast for the eyes. The opulent gold-

plated paperless bottle is breathtaking unto itself. Each

is fitted with engraved pewter or tin labels depending on the

season, which are hand-applied to the bottle’s surface. This distinctive vessel, originally conceived by the

André Courrèges fashion house to evoke the style and splendor

of the French fashion industry, is meticulously decorated at a single site in France’s Cognac region. The

attention to detail in design and distillery is second to none.

Your Brut Gold bottle comes packaged in an elegant black lacquered wooden case lined in black velvet and embossed

with the brand’s signature Ace of Spades insignia – perfectly repre-

senting the bold strength of flavor this fine Champagne boasts.

Armand de Brignac’s exclusive champagnes, which are priced

from $300 per bottle, are simply a must.

ROLLS-ROYCE PRESENTS PHANTOM COUPÉ

AVIATOR COLLECTION

2008 Bentley Continental GTC Mulliner provided by RSF Motors

26 | RSF MAGAZINE • rsfmagazine.com

Page 27: RANCHO SANTA FE MAGAZINE

The first in the collection of 35 Phantom Coupé Aviator Collection models – which feature a suite of ex-clusive design concepts, color combinations and new materials – debuts today at the Pebble Beach Quail gathering in the United States.

“Our founding forefather Charles Stewart Rolls was a pioneer who pushed the boundaries of motoring and aviation to the limit,” said Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Rolls-Royce CEO. “With our exclusive Phantom Coupé Aviator Collection we celebrate this great British hero, presenting a car which hints at experiments in early flight married to the best engineering, modern design and exquisitely crafted materials. The collection takes Rolls-Royce Bespoke to new levels of subtle, yet beautiful detailing.”

Inspired by Charles Stewart Rolls and the legend of the Schneider Trophy-winning Supermarine S6B (powered by a Rolls-Royce R Type engine), Rolls-Royce Motor Cars proudly present the Phantom Coupé Aviator Collection. The collection celebrates the spirit of human endeavor that drove a very British hero and subsequently led Rolls-Royce to simultaneous world speed records on land, air and in the water.

rsfmagazine.com • RSF MAGAZINE | 27

Page 28: RANCHO SANTA FE MAGAZINE

Finished in Aviator Grey, the Phantom Coupé Aviator Collection features a contrasting matt bonnet, window and grille surround while inside, the interplay of wood and metal hint strongly at a cockpit theme. A Thommen, aviation-grade clock with blood orange needle tips is embedded in the metal foil upper fascia, complemented by matt black dials for power reserve, speedometer and fuel gauges.

The lower fascia is veneered in mahogany, painstakingly shaped by craftspeople just as the early record-setting propellers were fashioned and features Sapele contrast. Polished stainless steel veneer ‘onlays’ with bullet-shaped ends are designed to match floor mat fixings.

Between 1931 and 1933 the Schneider Trophy was held in the South of England, soaring over the Solent and the Witterings in West Sussex, a location no more than 10 miles from the current Home of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars in Goodwood, England. Collection cars celebrate the victorious S6B aircraft with transmission tunnel in anodised aluminium with exposed torx fixings and swage lines that echo the oil cooling veins on the S6B fuselage side. These highlights are repeated on collection car armrests.

The leather-lined glove compartment includes an embossed Charles Rolls quote following his first flight with the Wright Brothers in 1908: “The power of flight is as a fresh gift from the Creator, the greatest treasure yet given to man.” A centre console chrome plaque de-scribes Rolls – only the second man in Britain to hold a pilot’s license – simply as Pioneer Aviator, below a representation of his sweeping signature.

Precaution: If you have any joint issues, tennis may not be the best sport for you to pick up. The stop and go running will be tough on the joints and may cause inflammation. Take it slow and see how your body reacts.

Easy ways to stay in shape, and enjoy a fun lifestyle…

Although Summer time is winding down, that doesn’t mean you have to stop all the sports and outdoor activities! Our fine city

offers the best climate for an active lifestyle, and I would like to cover some fun ways to stay in shape as we head into the holiday season. Try some of these sports that offer new opportunities to build strength, endurance, increase happiness, and are also fun at the same time!

Pick one of these sports to get into, or try all of them, that’s up to you. Each sport offers different benefits, and it’s best to find a sport that offers you the most enjoyment!

TENNIS: This sport is great for a beginner or ad-vanced player that is looking to shed a few pounds and gain some core strength. The quick movement, running to and from the ball is a good way to burn calories. The swinging action when you make con-tact with the ball will slim down the mid-section and force you to hold that tummy in tight. Both lower and upper extremities will get slight toning with the different techniques you use; sliding will sculpt the inner and outer thigh, while an over-head serve will give you definition through your shoulders.

GOLF: I can tell you first hand that un-less you have actually played golf; you won’t understand how much of a workout it can be! Although you are riding around in a cart, and there is not much cardio in-volved, golf is a game that focuses about 90% on core strength. When you play, your swing will get its drive directly from your back muscles, oblique’s, and abdomi-nal muscles. The swinging action will tone and tighten your waistline, and to add a little exercise bonus, try walking the course! I guarantee that when you finish a round of golf, your body will be tired.

Precaution: Just about anyone can play golf, and it’s relatively easy on your joints. A big part of the game does involve rota-tion of the back, so if you have back issues you might want to skip this one. Also, if you have arthritis in your hands be careful! Gripping the club can be strenuous on sen-sitive hands.

SWIMMING: Swimming is a great activ-ity for anyone because it is extremely gen-tle on your joints. There are also a lot of different exercises you can do in the water to strengthen but not get injured. Try dif-ferent techniques to use different muscles. This activity will mostly build upper body strength through the arms and shoulders. If you kick up the pace a little bit then you will also be able to burn ample amount of calories, especially a fast breast stroke. To change things up, you can try swimming in the ocean which will add extra resis-tance. If you want to work other parts of your body, try the underwater weights, and a kick board to work your glutes!

Precaution: If you have a shoulder injury/ rotator cuff injury then swimming may not be for your, especially the breast stroke. The overhead motion will aggravate shoulder injuries. Also, if you swim in the ocean be careful with currents and always swim with a buddy or in front of a lifeguard station, the currents can be strong and if you are not a good swimmer you can get tired very quickly.

SURFING: One of my personal favorites! Surfing is a great time, but let me warn you, it’s harder than it looks. Surfing is a total body exercise. You will build great upper body strength from paddling, espe-cially through your shoulders and triceps. You will work all of the muscles in your back, especially the muscles that support your spine. You will use your core muscles while balancing on the board, and your leg muscles to stand. Surfing will give your body a nice lean look. If you are a begin-ner then try a long board. This will make the whole process easier. Find waves that are fairly small, and I would suggest hiring a professional the first time you go out so they can give you some inside tips.

Precaution: Being out in the ocean can be dangerous, be aware of currents and make sure someone is watching you. If you have back or shoulder problems, skip surfing. Even though you are in the water, the com-bo of the big board and the strong waves can rattle a gentle body.

HIKING: Hiking is a great leisure activ-ity. It offers beginner levels all the way through advanced levels, and you can de-cide how difficult you are going to make the hike. One of my favorites is Torrey Pines State Reserve. This hike has a nice variety of hills, which are good to lift and tighten glutes, but also has straight aways to catch your breath, or kick it up a notch and do a light jog. Hiking burns calories but also reduces stress and you are usu-ally located in a very pleasant atmosphere so you won’t even notice you are working out. If you want to increase resistance, add

ankle or hand weights. This will definitely get your heart pumping!

Precaution: If you are unstable, or a fall could be detrimental, then I would suggest sticking to a flat surface. Hiking trails are usually rigid and if you don’t have good bal-ance you could run the risk of falling.

RUNNING: Running reduces the risk of stroke and breast cancer. Regular running has become a treatment option for doctors to prescribe to patients who are at a high risk, or early stages, of osteoporosis, dia-betes, and hypertension. It reduces the risk of heart attacks, by strengthening the heart and lowering blood pressure. Running maintains the elasticity of arteries incred-ibly well because as you run your arteries expand and contract nearly three times as much as usual. Running also builds confidence and self-esteem like few other individual sports can; the release of feel good endorphins aids in this benefit.

Precaution: Running can also be very de-manding on the body. Injuries can often oc-cur in the joints, feet, legs and hips. These injuries are a result of overexertion, run-ning long distances on hard or uneven sur-faces, or poor running form.

When you try your new sports, always re-member:

- Warm up - Cool Down- Stretch - Stay hydrated.

As with any new activities, make sure you listen to your body and do what’s best for you. Take it one step at a time and contin-ue to build on your fitness regimen! And, most importantly, Have Fun!!!

RSF MAGAZINE: What is the business mission?MIR3’s mission is to advance organizations and communities tonew levelsofachievement, efficiency, safetywith theworld’smostsophisticated, scalable, dependable and easy-to-use technology for real-time, two-way communication with populations of all sizes, supported by the very best customer service. With MIRS technol-ogy organizations now have a platform available for them to be able to contact hundreds of thousands of people simultaneously, with cascade notification capability, response system intelligence, which offers real time, live data to the organization. The data processing is priceless to any company seeking true intelligence within their con-tact systems.

RSF MAGAZINE: What are your current projects or involvements?MIR3 is growing rapidly so I am very focused on helping our CEO operationalize the business and drive new revenue growth. I am currently hiring sales, sales engineers, lead specialists, and technical writers. I am also working on a phased approach to growing our Interna-tional business. As a senior executive, there are many projects that I am involved with on adailybasisbutreallyit’sateamapproach. We have a great team and everyone is com-mitted to helping one another. I am personally focused on cross organizational communication, customer engagement and enablement, and a global

sales and marketing strategy for explosive growth. MIR3 has a great culture and I am happy to be a part of it. Fromtheproductdevelopmentperspective:Weareconstantly fo-cused on INNOVATION— this is the key component of growth. This includes implementing multinational versions of the system and constantly re-modularizing the back end to enhance and im-prove usability and functionality. With technology ever changing, we are a constant work in progress.

What is involved in the day to day operations of your busi-ness and responsibilities?I am responsible for worldwide sales that include channels, di-rect and international operations. MIR3 sells our products both through channels of distribution and direct to end customers. We do this through a high quality focused sales team that includes chan-nel managers, account managers and enterprise sales people. It can be a challenge to grow the business in both groups successfully be-cause, inherently, there is channel and distribution conflict. When

joining the firm I was able to spearhead a new program that drove significant new growth in the channel with mini-

mal channel conflict. Our channel business has been growing ever since at a rate of 50% plus YOY. In

addition, we are driving new business growth through account managers and enterprise sales and we are doing this while also maintaining a high customer retention rate. Supporting the sales team are sales engineers both domesti-cally and internationally as well as sales ad-ministrationandRFPspecialists.

I enjoy working with customers and helping the sales team on sales strategy to become, in

effect, sales consultants. Wedon’t sell software;we sell solutions because our technology can have a

significant impact on companies and their employees.

I am not a leader that is sitting in an office with a closed door all day. I like to interact with customers, sales people, engineers and oth-ers in the company. On a daily basis I try to balance my time with strategic planning, operational issues, customer and partner facing initiatives and with sales people. I am also involved in complex pric-ing structures, contracts, human resource management, product de-velopment, roadmap discussions and overall corporate strategy. The days are busy but I love it.

RSF MAGAZINE: What makes your business different from others of its kind?Wemakeadifferenceinpeople’slives.Corporations, universities, and governments use our systems in emergencies and for daily operational use to communicate with theiremployees,suppliersandpartners.It’sreallycooltechnologythatyoucanseeandhearwork.Forinstance,Icansendamessageto a ten thousand people in multiple languages and contact them on whatever device they use – a phone, through sms, email, pager, etc. More importantly, I can solicit a response in real time and then take action. We have a robust text-to-speech engine that converts text to audio for quick dissemination of information. You can even im-mediately connect people to a conference call or route a response to another number, like an Emergency Operations Center. You can do all of this easily through a web-based SaaS application. Our technol-ogy has never experienced a failure because we have a huge infra-structure supporting nine co-located data centers in the US, Canada and Europe. Today more than ever, companies are focused on governance, risk managementandcompliance(GRC)–MIR3isan importantpartof the message delivery platform to address these broader require-ments. Moreover, we are working on pioneering technology that will change the way people communicate and manage their overall work. Itwill impactYahoo,Facebook,Twitter andall the corpo-rate message platforms that drive enterprise communications. Es-sentially MIR3 is the engine that leverages corporate and personal communications through text-to-speech, voice, sms, email, fax and many other modalities in multiple languages and on the backbone of a global infrastructure.

RSF MAGAZINE: What have been major obstacles/stepping stones that you overcame to achieve your success?Becomingamanagercanbeverydifficultandisnotforeveryone. When I become a first-line manager more than 15 years ago, it was difficultbecauseyoudon’tnecessarilyhavedecisionmakingauthor-ity and its more difficult to drive revenue because you really have to rely on your team and their skills. Moreover, there is a distinct differencebetweenmanagingandleadership.Becominganeffectiveleader can be complex and requires some very solid skills in people management, vision creation, motivation, inventing and relating. At MIR3 executive coaching by our CEO and continuous feedback from other members of the management team has enabled me to refine my leadership skills and work toward continuous personal improvement.Ibelieveit’simportanttobeintrospectiveandcon-stantly challenge your own personal mental map. A leader must be adaptive, compassionate, think creatively and strategically, make swift decisions sometimes based on limited information, and most importantly be able to work with and know how to motivate people. Aneffectiveleaderdoesn’tleadbutratherisfollowed. It’sallaboutthe people, the message you deliver and how you deliver it. There have been many challenges on the road to success and I have also made many mistakes. The key is to really learn from your mistakes, take personal inventory and find ways to constantly improve yourself. Most important is to let go of your ego and focus on genuinely helping others. What is most rewarding is see others succeed and grow.

RSF MAGAZINE: Where do you see your business growth with-in the next 5 years?Technology innovation is moving fast these days, so five years are a very long time. Over the next 18-24 months we will completely dominate ourmarket. CurrentlyMIR3 is in the coveted Gartner2012LeadershipQuadrantandwe intendtomaintainanddefendthat position. RSF MAGAZINE: If you had to give a piece of advice to busi-ness owners out there, what would it be?There are many business owners that have far more knowledge about running a firm than me. RSF MAGAZINE: Who is Rene when he’s not in the office? When I am not in the office you can usually find me outdoors or reading something, or listening to music or a podcast. TOP 10

FALL

FASHION

TRENDSThis fall, fall for these Ten Fashion and Beauty Trends

Autumn brings noteworthy trends and these are the

seasons TOP 10 must have’s. From bold colors, tex-

tures, shapes and a change from the traditional to a

more refreshed approach, Fall Trends 2012 will not let

you down. Some trends are fresh, others have been

re-done, re-processed and some just begun to see

the light.

Oxblood It’s the color of blood, it represents passion, desire, yet provokes an elegant appeal. It’s not brown, it’s not purple, not even red, but a mix of several colors. Oxblood is a hue, full, rich and unforgettable. This color goes with everything; it can be a bag, a coat, a dress or pumps. You can even wear it head to toe. Another alternative is to pair Oxblood with neutrals. This is a more subtle approach, but not any less alluring. Oxblood is perfect for fall, its warm, and mysterious and is the perfect match to other fall favorites. Nina Garcia, of Elle Magazine, calls oxblood the new black and I could not agree more.

Page 39: RANCHO SANTA FE MAGAZINE

BaroqueThe dramatic trend that Baroque brings will be the perfect accent to any outfit this season. Dolce & Gabbana show you how to channel Old World Europe, the 17th century and the elegance of royalty. Think opulent prints, gold accents, bold detailing, ornate and elaborate textures, prints and jacquards. With this trend a little goes a long way. Start by complement-ing a baroque inspired piece and simply pair it with a solid blouse, pant or skirt. You can also utilize the ornate jewels and swirling motives used as accessory pieces; for example a Byzan-tine style necklace, earrings, cuff or bracelet.

Duo-ToneNo you are not seeing double, it’s

the duo-tone trend entering this fall. Panels, geometric shapes and vertical

or horizontal lines pump up the typical black and white outfit. Break up traditional

solid pieces by implementing dimension to your wardrobe with a hint of surrealism. My

favorite is the not so black dress but duo-tone black and white dress. This is a fresh

approach to the little black dress we all have. A white panel, shape line or even

accessory will make you stand out in a sea of black. Add a splash of

color...and Voila!

Icy EyesBe one of the “cool” girls this fall, yes you heard right… Cool or icy to be more direct. Trace a cool silver shade around the inner corners around the tear duct and draw attention to your eyes while making them look bigger. Keep it neutral with gray eyeliner for daytime or add more depth with shades ranging from winter white to charcoal gray and everything in between. Ice is in this fall season. Refreshing right?!

70’s PrintYes its’ back, but really it never

left. This 70’s trend is every-where, from printed jeans, blouses, dresses, boots to

accessories. My favorite is the printed jeans, in

the traditional avo-cado green, brown, but with shades of blue and purple. It

matches beautifully with solid t-shirts, blouses and even

other printed tops. Also implement the cropped top in the

70’s motif, try it in a boxy silhouette

and don’t forget a 70’s inspired silky

trouser and the sheath dress. All are full of

personality and yesterday’s

psychedelic disco-infused

party scene.

Gauzy ScarvesIt is fall after all, so scarves cannot be left out. Let’s leave the bulky, heavy and traditional scarves behind. Instead loop or drape a light gauzy scarf. Cashmere silk and light cotton scarves, with bold pops of sheen and color will be the perfect com-pliment to any jacket. You can also transform it into a beautiful neck-lace accessory due to its delicate fabric and flexibility. At the office, a whisper of color keeps you cool and collected while looking poised. Do it differently this sea-son and tie on an airy gauzy scarf, and don’t be afraid to go bold with the color selections. Try this forget me not “Nefertiti” Collection piece influenced by ancient Egypt.

Day ClutchThe clutch is no longer a night staple accessory; it can now see the light. Large and oversized is this season’s trend. Carry a tra-ditional patent leather, metallic shimmer, a python material, an embossed faux or even a snakeskin clutch and you will not miss a beat. Let’s not leave out suede, gun metal, sequined tweed and the popular chain details some designers have implemented into the oversized day clutch. It does not matter what style, color, pattern or texture combination you choose, this trend is in night and now also during the day.

The Vampy LipMake a bold statement, dare to be provocative, to be seductive and leave a mark. Also known as the burgundy lip, this fall trend shows best on fair skin, but does not disappoint on olive and even darker tones. If you dare to highlight your lips in the sea-sons hottest and most seductive shade, less will be more with the rest of your makeup application. This fall you will not be overlooked!

Annie MacielFashion & Beauty Editor

Pumps on AcidPumps do not have to be traditional or boring anymore, pump it up with digitized prints of every shape, color, variation and height. Don’t forget to look for the fierce metallic heel surely to mark your step. Yes! Pumps are on acid, literally and this fall the streets will parade with every assortment you can imagine. Be the one walking in them and don’t be left behind without this fashion fun trend.

LeatherGuess what, leather jackets is not what you should think of when you hear leather, instead think of a full skirt, a t-shirt, a cocktail dress and even a work blazer. Leather is now a delicate fabric and wears as such. You heard right, it’s not the hard and uncomfortable material with a harsh feel. This season it’s feminine and can even be romantic when paired with soft shades of pink or purple. Its newfound suppleness makes it easy to wear in both a neutral or bold colors. Free leather from its typical stereotype interpretation and let it show its versatility in an array of colors. Get inspired by this Michael Kors piece.
