2008 Arkansas Profile in Service AwardThe 2008 Arkansas Profile in Service

Award was presented to Congressman MikeRoss in April at the El Dorado CountryClub. It was the first annual event specificallyfor the southern part of Arkansas to benefitthe DeGray Lake Campus. CongressmanRoss was honored for his outstanding effortsin improving the lives of Arkansans, especial-ly the youth.

Congressman Ross’ dedication to publicservice, including extensive civic and commu-nity involvement was obvious for the 250supporters who attended the dinner.Governor Mike Beebe was the emcee for thiswonderful benefit.

Also honored at the dinner was Mrs.Chesley Pruet. “The Arkansas Sheriffs’ YouthRanches, and the state of Arkansas, is lucky tohave such supporters as the Pruets,” said Sheriff Ken Jones. “It is through efforts like

theirs and many others thatprograms like the Ranch areable to continuously providefor our children in need.”

Recently one of our former resi-dents wrote a very moving articleabout the power of books in his life.He recognized that books were theescape vehicle from the pain in hislife. As a tool to get to know a child, Ihave often asked the questions: 1) Ifsomeone wrote a book that told yourlife’s story, what would the volume belike? 2) If that story were made into amovie, what impact would it have onthe audience?

Everyone has a story to tell. Thechildren who have been part of ourprogram for the past three decadeshave shared stories of horrible tragedyand great triumph. At times, their sto-ries are mysteries, sometimes sad,sometimes funny, always an adventureand incredibly interesting. Havingthem share their secrets with me ismost humbling and a great honor.Their being able to share their story isoften the beginning step in a longjourney of healing.

The expression that “A picture isworth a thousand words” can be espe-cially appreciated in movies that art-fully blend the visual and auditory –especially if part of the audio is music.

I am a huge movie buff and havebeen for as long as I can remember. Ilove those old black and white moviesand have become a huge fan of inde-pendent and documentary films aswell. It probably grows out of mybeing a big fan of the written word.When I was growing up, movies had ahuge impact on my life. We had acouple of old dark, dank theaters thatcatered to kids (probably because thefloors were so sticky and the mice soplentiful that adults wouldn’t go inthere.) But they were great places tobecome engaged in the lives of Tarzan,

cowboys, Boston Blackie, and a

was a caring, compassionate man wholoved freely but didn’t see the good inhis life until forced to see how muchworse the world would be like withouthim.

The Arkansas Sheriffs’ YouthRanches recently completed a newvideo, and in the process, the staff andchildren were invited to share theirstories. Some stories were too painfulto put into the final product. With thehelp of our good friends at theDempsey Film Group, pictures,words, and music were woven togetherinto a tapestry that tells the Ranchstory. The resulting video causes bothtears to flow and hope to spring forth.

We have carried this forwardinto a Digital Film Camp the last twosummers where children have beeninvolved in community film making.The kids are taught to make their owndigital movies. They write the scripts,create the props, collaborate, commu-nicate, and exercise their creative spir-its while learning marketable skillsusing digital video and computer edit-ing to tell their stories. The final prod-ucts are screened at the T-Tauri FilmFestival (www.ttauri.org). As a result, Ihave gained a new appreciation forfilms – both old and new.

Thirty-two years after ourfounding, there are great stories to telland many more yet to come. Many ofour former residents are now able toshare their stories including an appre-ciation for your belief in them. Theworld is a better place because ourchildren are in it. Included in thebook about your life, will be that youinvested well and made a difference.Thanks to you our children’s storieshave a much happier ending. Thankyou!

I was especially attracted tomovies and books in which it wasclear that there were positive and neg-ative consequences to ones’ actions.Do wrong – end up in jail! Do rightand eventually things would turn outfor the better. Maybe not realistic, butreassuring none the less. I can lookback and see the impact movies hadon my life choices. I loved The TenCommandments (both the 1923 and1956 versions), Boys Town, The Daythe Earth Stood Still, San Francisco,and It’s a Wonderful Life – to name afew. They reinforced my beliefs thatgood will win out over evil and thatone man can make a difference. I, too,could be a Father Flanagan, a GeorgeBailey, or even a Klaatu. FatherFlanagan succeeded against the odds;Klaatu had to learn about earth peopleto achieve his mission of saving themfrom themselves; and George Bailey

Batesville Ranch Receives a New Sign!!!!Kay and John Thomas from

Mountain View made the wonderfuldonation of a new hand-painted signfor our entrance way. They believestrongly in the Ranches’ mission andappreciate what the Ranch does forkids.

Kay retired four years ago from The Ozark Folk Center State Parkin Mountain View, and John will retire in a couple of years, and he iskeeping the Ranch on his list of places he would like to volunteer withhis carpentry skills. The Thomases saw the need for a new entrancesign and decided to meet that need. Christie Phillips of MountainView donated her time and talents to help Kay with the layout for thesign because it was Kay’s first large outdoor sign to paint.

Kay’s friend gave her information about CASA and told her tolook into volunteering. Kay took this good advice and has beenblessed by the other advocates and the children CASA serves. Herfirst case was brothers who had been placed at the Ranch. It was inthose visits that she learned to appreciate the staff and purpose of theASYR. Kay believes, “Good things will not happen for kids if welook the other way just because it’s uncomfortable to get involved.”One of the foster moms Kay works with signs her correspondencewith this quote. Kay has learned to appreciate it so much.

“One hundred years from now, it will not matter what my bankaccount was, how big my house was, or what kind of car I drove. Butthe world may be a little better, because I was important in the life of achild.”

Michelle loves to go to school. She is looking for-ward to a visit with her grandmother this summer. Shewill get to fly, so she is ecstatic.

Layne enjoys teaching the girls some of his tricksin playing Uno. He tried to teach the girls to fish.Only one- Ellae- has ever asked again! We are allexcited about summer finally being here. We plan toswim in the beautiful White River, plant our garden,haul hay, ride horses, have hotdog roasting campfires,and learn to make smores.

FAITH HALL NEWSFaith Hall is extremely happy for summer to be

here. We have had a very active spring, and are look-ing forward to sunshine. Jamey and Phillip enjoyed atrip to Branson to hear some great Christian Rockbands and some great inspirational speakers. Thewhole house went to Alltel Arena and enjoyed otherChristian bands. Ryan and Emily have all been work-ing hard at Colton’s Steak House. things. Cherie is the houseparent. Cherie’s son, Layne,Ashley, Sammie, Anna, Ellae, and Michelle have beenbusy. Ashley just had her 18th birthday. She had ajoint 18th birthday party with Robert from KeithHall.

At the party, we danced andjumped on the trampoline.

Someone smeared Ashley’s cakeon her face! Sammie is excited about

turning 18 now.She wants to learnto drive and get herlicense. She is readyfor warmer weather so she can ridehorses.

Anna was baptized on EasterSunday! We were all very excitedfor her. She is practicing her songfor a special Sunday at church.Anna has fallen in love withAshley’s dog.

Ellae is ready for school to be out! She loved thesnow we had. She and Layne tried to sled in the lid of

between the Ranch, NRCS, FSA, AGFC, and theAFC, to restore the natural environment to the SpringRiver. Approximately 600 trees have already beenplanted with 1200 more to be planted along the entireRanch boundary on the Spring River. A major projectto help stop the erosion of the riverbank will begin inthe summer of 2008. The AFC taught the boys howto use a dibble bar to plant trees. Rebecca Long fromthe Natural Resources Conservation Service discussedwith Ranch Board members riverbank stabilizationand upland wildlife management with food plots.

Upcoming events include: fishing, swim-ming, camping, baseball, cookouts, skating, bowling,movie night, T-Tauri Filmfest, Kid’s College atUACCB, church camps, and the list goes on and on.Now for the other side: Faith Hall will be participat-ing in all kinds of chores. We will be mowing, weedeating, painting, taking care of chickens, picking uptrash, gardening, composting and recycling. By theway, we believe recycling is vital to the future of ourplanet Earth, so please remember to recycle. It doesn’trequire a lot and is a good habit to get into. Cole wasthe first Rancher to give it a try, and his words thatnight were, “All I remember was bein’ in the chute,one buck, then air.” Luckily Mrs. Kristi Travis wasready with her cameraand was able to catch thesplit second Cole was onthe bull. We’ve had won-derful support from thecommunity. The juniorbulls have been providedby Mr. Brian Rowan,who has become an amazing Ranch supporter. At ourvery first Buck Out, we were honored with a surprisevisit from past PRCA Bull Riding Champion, Mr.Denny Flynn, who is also in the Pro Rodeo Hall ofFame. We are all very excited about the upcoming BullRiding Clinic Mr. Flynn is planning to hold here atthe Ranch as a fundraiser this summer.

The Travis family: Stephen, Kristi, Cody, Bailey,and Brooke, as well as Bryson and Byron Brady andBen Hatley have been invaluable in their help aroundthe Ranch. Our heating/air guy, Justin Sanders, is, asusual, doing more than keeping us warm and cool.He’s great about lending a helping hand to new riders.All of these people obviously love working with thekids and Mr. Kevin, whether it’s mucking stables, get-ting the arena ready, or exercising the horses.

The boys did great in school, and we so appreci-ate the phone calls and e-mails from the teachers atour wonderful Alma School District keeping usabreast of their progress. Dada ran track and consis-tently brought home blue ribbons. He broke records,and he even has a plaque for “High Scorer.” He wasin eighth grade, but was running with the ninth gradeboys. We are so proud of him. Cole participated infield events. The coaches appreciated Cole’s hard work,and he had been asked to help out at the older boys’track meets.

Everyone is working hard to get ready for ourrodeo, which will be held July 18-19, 2008. This is anARA and CRRA sanctioned event and stock will beprovided by David Moore of Chigger Valley Rodeo.

In April, the boys, Mackenzie, Mr. Kevin andMs. Misti helped the library again at the 22nd AnnualSpinach Festival. We also had our own booth this yearand gave out Ranch Reports, calendars, and bumper

The houseparent’s daughter,Jenny, has been relief house par-enting at Mulberry and workingin the tutoring program. She hasapplied to Ozarka CulinarySchool and is waiting anxiouslyon the results of her application.

Joey participated in trackthis year and won four ribbonsat one track meet. He won rib-bons for long jump, 110 meterhurdles, 400 meter relay, and200 meter dash. This comes inhandy when he is trying to avoidchores.

Robert and Ashley cel-ebrated their birthdays.Robert has been workinghard at the high schoolearning money to fix up hisvehicle.

Robert, Sol, and Will went to the Capitol for the“big debate” over their spring break. The house has athree-legged dog named Pedro. He gets into a lot oftrouble at the house.

Cottage 1 NewsWhether it’s running track, dancing up a storm,

or bull riding, the boys have been busy!!! Springfound us having a ball - feeding our new lamb twinsJacques and Gustaff. The kids all start running whenthey hear them crying for their bottles. Everyonewants to be the one to feed. They are adorable andgetting quite large.

We’ve been holding “Buck-Outs” on Wednesdaynights and the Ranch boys, as well as lots of kidsfrom the community, have been sure to “Cowboy

also enjoying the buck-out held monthly at the Ranchto help raise money for our big rodeo we are havingJuly 18th & 19th on our campus. So far we havewatched some ofthe boys ride bullsfrom the boys’house, but the girls seem content just watching.Dillion wants to ride a bull and may get his chance atthe next buck-out. The whole campus and peoplefrom our community have been hard at work prepar-ing for the rodeo. Summer is just beginning, andalready there is so much excitement in the house.

OLDS COTTAGEThe girls have been riding horses every chance

they can get this summer. We had two girls whoplayed basketball this year and one who did the film-ing for all of the games. Three girls played softball,and Kayla and Conicia made the varsity team. Wewere very proud of them. This year two girls tookMeats Lab at school and one girl took Ag-mechanics,learning to work on small engines.

The girls are active in FFA and FCCLA. TheChristian Fellowship group at OBU comes out everytwo weeks and has Bible study and Fellowship withthe girls. The Fellowship members are a good inspira-tion for the girls and also encourage them to go to col-lege.

Kacey and Boomer are still working very hard atSearch and Rescue (SAR). They have been asked,along with Tosha and Trouble, to go to a summercompetition in Conway wherethey will be judged along withother working dogs across thestate. The girls in the househave been asked to be “bait”people. If they do, then theywould get to go for the weekend for free and enjoy allthe classes on first aid, first responder, water rescue,and mountain rescue. The girls would be expected to“get lost” in the woods and “have various injuries” forthe SAR people.

Our girls hosted a trail ride and 4-wheeler ridefor the drivers at Carson Truck Lines in Hot Springs.One of the men was with the Hot SpringsOptimist Club so they were able to thank him in

stickers to raise awareness for the Ranch.On April 26, we held a fun day at the Ranch

which included a trail ride, barbeque chicken dinner,live music, and pie auction. As usual, it was amazinglysupported by our community, and everyone greatlyenjoyed themselves.

A great big thank-you goes out to all of the won-derful people in our community who show suchunfailing love and support in our efforts to “build achild.” May God richly bless you for giving of your-selves to our Ranch family.

Girls Cottage 3 NewsThe kids are very excited about school being out

and all the fun and exciting things the summer has instore for them. The end of school brought lots ofenjoyment to the girls. Rasha and LaShonda attendedprom, Sabrina attended the Military Ball and an endof the year ROTC trip to Missouri. Sabrina hasenjoyed a great year in ROTC and will be looking for-ward to next year. Sabrina is also looking forward tolearning how to swim this summer so she can enjoy allthe camping trips planned to Lake DeGray, GreersFerry Lake, and Devil’s Den and, of course, swimmingin our lake on the campus. The girls are planning todonate their time and good work habits to some ofour elderly in the community by cleaning their yards,houses, and whatever needs to be done. LaShondatried out and made the dance team at school and willbe attending dance camp this summer. Rasha is stillhard at work being our housekeeper. Mr. Robert andDillion attended Dillion’s 5th grade trip to ScienceCity in Kansas City. They got to see new and intrigu-ing things. Dillion also enjoyed spending time withhis dad. Dillion is probably the most excited aboutsummer being here so he can spend time fishing,camping, and swimming. The girls and Dillionworked very hard this year at school with their grades.We would like to thank all the teachers at Alma

Kenny took the girls target shooting and taughtthem gun safety. They took turns shooting a .22, 270,and a 12 gauge. Savannah did the best, getting threeout of eight on her targets. Three girls got theirhunter’s education certificates and have their huntinglicense. They have enjoyed going deer, squirrel, rac-

coon, and hog hunting withKenny, and it has also helped tokeep our freezer full.

Kacey was able to spendpart of her birthday in the stu-dio with morning show co-

hosts, Corey and Jay(The Edge) out ofLittle Rock 100.3.

Arkansas Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch’s HomesteadLegacy Society pays tribute to those men andwomen who, by providing for the future of theRanch through their estate plans, have ensured thepreservation of our mission so that we will indeed“leave no child behind.”

Recognition in this special Society takes placeunder the following guidelines:

“By making provisions in their Wills such asbequests; through the creation of charitable trustsand gift annuities; and by implementing gifts oflife insurance policies, life estates, and contingencygifts; The Arkansas Sheriffs’ Youth Ranch hopes tohonor those individuals and families who havemade provisions to assist our future growth andexpanding mission throughout the State ofArkansas.”

EventsEASTER EGG HUNT

A soggy groundand a cool wind didn’tstop the annual EasterSunday egg hunt.With 400 eggs to find,the children had theirwork cut out for them.But once again, they’veshown us that no chal-lenge is too big forthem to overcome.Prizes were given for two “lucky eggs” and for themost eggs found. Nick found lucky egg #1; Samuelfound lucky egg #2; and Paul found the most eggs.Each received a new rod and reel with tackle box andtackle donated by Shakespeare. Wal-Mart gift cards inthe amounts of $25, $15, and $10 were also given. Abig thank-you to all that donated, participated, andhelped.

HILLY 100 BIKE RIDEWhite River Medical

Center Cycling Club, abike-riding enthusiasts club,hosted the sixth Hilly 100at the Batesville Ranch,where the distance of theride could be up to 104miles for the seasoned rider.

Two years ago thechildren rode for the firsttime. This year thirteen children participated in theride.

State Capitol VisitOn Friday, March 28, 2008, nine

Ranchers and four Staff met for a day ofeducational fun at the Arkansas StateCapitol.

Ms. Vickie Critcher coordinated theactivities and led the tour of the Capitol.She and Senator Jack Critcher treated theRanchers and Staff to a delicious lunch atCotham’s in the City Restaurant.

After lunch, our Ranchers went tothe Senate Chamber and conducted amock legislative session. They introducedthree bills, spoke for and against thesebills, and voted on them. The week of March 24 was spent preparing for this session,and Education Coordinator Sarah Cumnock and the Ranchers worked tirelessly tolearn about the legislative process, to explore and research the issues involved in theproposed bills, and to practice presenting the bills.

Those attending this activity were Anna, Ashley, Michelle, Paul, Robert, Sammie,Sol, Will, and Zachary. The Staff that attended were Mike Cumnock, Sarah Cumnock,Cherie Davis, and Peggy Holt.
