Ramsgate Maritime Museum - Introduction
Ramsgate Maritime Museum is based in the Clock House of the Victorian town of Ramsgate, Kent.
It is found in the Royal Harbour and its contents are devoted to maritime history. The Clock House was built in 1817 by Benjamin Wyatt and George Louch. It was later altered by John Rennie and has now been designated as a Grade II*.
The Clock House is a focal point along the Royal Harbour front, sandwiched by a tidal harbour to the south and non tidal har-bour to the north, located off the main thoroughfare through the town (Harbour Parade).
There are two shipping containers to the west of the Clock House that are part of the museum and currently used as additional exhibition space.
Harbour Parade consists of small shops, restaurants, and cafes.
The Clock House and museum has the potential to once again become an important focal point for Ramsgate and its harbour.
With a viable plan coupled with the enthusiasm of local people it could once again become a cultural asset of Ramsgate, acting as a catalyst for future development in the area.

Ramsgate Maritime Museum - The Clock House
Internally the museum is disorganised, tired, and suffers from a lack of good quality natural and artificial light.
There are five gallery spaces in the museum, three on the first floor, and two on the ground floor one of which is housed in the shipping containers.
There is a small shop and reception area at ground floor with a staff room, general storage room and WC in one of the cham-bers.
At first floor level the central chamber contains a sun dial that concentrates a blade of light though a small aperture onto a bronze strip.
The basement is severely water damaged and floods on a regu-lar basis, it is currently used as low grade storage.

Ramsgate Maritime Museum - Site Plan
The Clock House in its current state is disengaged from the High Street and requires a considered approach in order to reinstate it as the gateway into the Royal Harbour of Ramsgate.
A considered landscaping strategy is therefore proposed for the harbour front to reconnect the museum with the high street (Har-bours Parade).
This will be predominantly achieved through improved street furniture, planting and signage.
The pedestrian street from Harbour Parade to the Clock House will be lined with street trees that will continue across the face of the building responding the architectural rhythm of its facade.
This will create a green corridor of trees that will act as a visual link between Harbours Parade and the Clock House.
To mark the end of the pedestrian street three high tensile cano-pies (see FIG 4.1-4.3) will create shaded areas over contempo-rary bench seating.
The tensile canopies mimic the sails of the sailing boats that line the harbours edge.
The iconic Cervia will be moved into the dry dock next to the sail like structures creating an exciting place to sit and have a drink.
Pier Yard will be improved with planters and a new boardwalk that connects Pier Yard with the historic ship.
The scheme also looks to incorporate the work of local artists in-cluding Andy Baldwin (see FIG 4.10). A place to exhibit their work will be allocated along the front of the museum, either side of the entrance.
To improve the building’s address a new entrance is proposed at the front of the art gallery/museum. This will be a sculptural piece acting as a social magnet that draws pedestrians into the mu-seum. This is explained in more detail in section 9.0 of this report.
A museum and gallery restaurant will be constructed off the rear of the art gallery and museum and the existing shipping con-tainers will be converted into a unique pop up cafe to create a cultural quarter that compliments the museum (see section 8.0 for more details).

5.0 The Proposal - The Layout
Ramsgate Maritime Museum - Describing the Layout
As mentioned previously the proposal seeks to transform and up-grade the museum to improve the user experience whilst creat-ing a museum restaurant and pop up cafe that compliments the museum and establishes a cultural quarter in Ramsgate.
The main entrance will be upgraded and improved to create a formal entrance lobby with access directly into the gallery/mu-seum restaurant, galleries and toilets (see 9.0 for more detail).
An art gallery will be arranged over the ground floor and the museum over the first floor of the Clock House. Each room will be refurbished and reorganised, with improved lighting.
At ground floor level the proposed art gallery is intended to support and exhibit work of local artists. This will spill out into the sculpture gardens that flank the main entrance into the clock house.
The restaurant will sit on the waters edge, with magnificent views over the harbour. It will have access onto a sun trapped terrace and It will be served by a kitchen in the basement (see 7.0 for more detail)
The Pop Up Cafe will be accessed directly from the museum as well as the street. This will be a temporary structure constructed out of the two shipping containers currently found on site. It will have an informal aesthetic, providing a homely atmosphere to eat and drink. On the roof there will be terrace with magnificent views over the harbour. (See section 5.0 for more detail)
A south facing sun trapped terrace will be created that links the Pop Up Cafe and the museum restaurant creating a shared communal courtyard where people can eat or have a drink with views over the harbour.

7.0 The Proposal - Exploring the Restaurant
Exploring the Restaurant
The restaurant extension will take the form of a contemporary colonnade that responds to the vernacular of the Clock House.
In particular the colonnade is abstracted from the stone frieze (05) that wraps around the central portion of the Clock House just below the eave of the pitched roof.
The restaurant will be built out of a cut stone which compliments the existing Clock House and typically used for civic buildings of this type.
A picture widow (01) will be located along the floor plans cen-tral axis, the origin of this axis being the gallery entrance. This will frame views toward the sea as soon as the user enters the build-ing.
The window is surrounded by a solid portion of stone (04) that ta-pers towards it whilst being slightly offset capturing the unique na-ture of the irregular slot window above (03), which goes against the ordered symmetry of the Clock House.
The small window (03) is significant because it forms part of the sun dial casting a blade of sunlight onto a bronze metal strip at midday, it is therefore important that the architecture should respond to it in some way.

8.0 The Proposal - Exploring the Pop Up
Exploring the Pop Up
Pop Up’s are temporary cafe/restaurants which inhabit unusual spaces providing creative and unique places to eat and have a drink.
Over the last decade “pop up” culture has grown exponential-ly as more and more people look to explore new and innova-tive ways of dining.
Frank’s Cafe, a Pop Up on the top floor of a multi storey car park in Peckham has made a significant contribution toward the up and coming creative culture that has developed in the borough, this has led to rapid regeneration in the area.
Like Franks Cafe the Pop Up Cafe will inhabit a unique space. It will pop up in the two existing shipping containers on the site.
The shipping containers will be wrapped in an architectural skin of lightweight polycarbonate (01).
The containers will be sand blasted to expose the raw corten steel (02) below paying homage to the industrial history/nature of the site as well as the working harbour.
Glimpses of the shipping container will be seen beneath the opaque milky coloured polycarbonate skin as well as certain portions of it being entirely exposed.
Decorative neon lettering/signage (04) as well as the polycar-bonate will glow at night casting a dramatic reflection on the water that surrounds it.
The interior will be detailed beautifully using reclaimed/recycled materials in a creative way that conveys an honest aesthetic which in turn creates a unique place to eat and have a drink.

9.0 The Proposal - Exploring the Entrance
Exploring the Entrance
Currently the Clock House’s entrance is too small and lacks an appropriate address for a civic building of this scale in such a prominent position on the Royal Harbour.
The proposal seeks to create a sculptural extension (01) to the front of the building that will not damage the existing structure but enhance the entrance so that it has a greater presence on the street.
It has been conceived as a funnel like sculptural element (01) that draws users into the space, acting like a social magnet. This will either be constructed out of metal or stone.
To celebrate the men who have lost their lives working on the lifeboats the proposed entrance will be engraved with the names of the deceased to create a memorial wall (02).
Currently the names are listed on a fence between the slipway and the carpark. By relocating these to the entrance of the main civic building in the town it will give their names greater prominence with in the area contributing toward the civic cen-tre of Ramsgate.

10.0 Exploring the Museum - Existing
Exploring the Museum/Art Gallery
Currently the museum is very tired, uninspiring and does not make the most of the exhibits on show.
The proposal seeks to address this in order to create a an inter-esting interactive exhibition space that makes the most of the exhibits.
This will involve reorganising the spaces as well as improving the exhibition stands.
The introduction of digital projection will also declutter the museum as well as present the information in a more interactive and informative way
An art gallery will be located on the ground floor whilst the mu-seum will be arranged along the first floor level.
