WHY CHOOSE THIS WHY CHOOSE THIS THEME ?THEME ?

“A person is said to be guilty of sin not only when he commits a wrong, .... but don’t forget that, when he neglects (omits) to carry out a duty too, he is also guilty of sin.”

WHY CHOOSE THIS WHY CHOOSE THIS THEME ?THEME ?

With regard to the duty of “Da’wah”, many mosques and organizations may only be looking at what they have done, and applaud them for it. Yet, can we dare say we have fulfilled our Fardh kifaaya (community obligation) adequately?

WHY CHOOSE THIS WHY CHOOSE THIS THEME ?THEME ?

Thus, this series of talk may be critical of our shortcomings in Da’wah, which in no way deny whatever good works already done. It will focus on what may not have been done, or what perhaps may have been neglected (ignored or forgotten) to be fulfil adequately (fardh kifaaya), as we are still accountable for them and would be held against us for them, in Allah’s judgement.

WHY CHOOSE THIS WHY CHOOSE THIS THEME ?THEME ?

Also, some in our community may have (knowingly or unknowingly) imitated or applied methods, criteria and standards, quite opposed to that of Islam, in our Da’wah approach.

Shouldn’t we be seeking the Qur’anic and Prophetic ways? Perhaps the do not know. Or have they no faith?

A VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER :

AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010

““The best amongst you is one who learns the Qur’an The best amongst you is one who learns the Qur’an and who teaches it (the Qur’an).”and who teaches it (the Qur’an).”

SOME REFLECTIONS:SOME REFLECTIONS: In this verse, what is striking to me is the

phrase “the Qur'an as a guide to mankind, the Qur'an as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong).”(between right and wrong).”

Perhaps Perhaps .... .... We Muslims (in Singapore) may We Muslims (in Singapore) may have forgotten some fundamental principles have forgotten some fundamental principles of what Islam is; its full history of how it was of what Islam is; its full history of how it was established and spread; its aims and purpose; established and spread; its aims and purpose; the important legacy and how our forefathers the important legacy and how our forefathers were guided, persuaded by the early Muslims were guided, persuaded by the early Muslims callers (callers (Du’atDu’at); our role as the continuing ); our role as the continuing generation; etc......generation; etc......

Page 9: Ramadhan[2010]tadzkirah#1[slideshare]

SOME REFLECTIONS:SOME REFLECTIONS: The topic : “Islamic Da’wah: the neglected

legacy of the Prophet s.a.w.” – may provoke some Muslims here to object, or to be cynical and brush it aside as though it merits no concern thinking – “we have not neglected Da’wah – never! How dare you.”

Well, firstly for starters, the theme of topic contains key words (subjects) which require each of us to sincerely question our own understanding of them.

Are we up to it ?AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010AllRightsReserved©Zhulkeflee2010

Page 10: Ramadhan[2010]tadzkirah#1[slideshare]

SOME REFLECTIONS:SOME REFLECTIONS: What do we mean “Islamic Da’wah”? Do our understanding of what constitute

“the legacy of the Prophet” includes “Da’wah” as an important pillar?

Yes! But “Da’wah” towards whom? Who are the object, the recipient of Da’wah and what are we to offer them?

Is there any difference between Muslims and non-Muslims?

How should “Da’wah” be done? And by whom? What is required of him?

REFLECTIONS:REFLECTIONS: The command to “Da’wah” – call or invite

– is towards all mankind. Obviously it was originally directed

towards all the non-Muslims. Lest we forgot, our Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. began alone and was sent to invite the rest of his people to this final message of Allah (ad-Deen al-Islam).

The Ummah of his Da’wah are in fact all mankind since his time till the end of the world (Qiyaamah).

REFLECTIONS:REFLECTIONS: This aayat describes concisely the Da’wah

and educative role of the Prophet s.a.w. in moulding a whole generation with al-Islam. Indeed he was the educator par excellance.

He left that legacy to this generation to continue the task to share the same benefit of al-Islam to every other people on the face of this earth, until the end of the world.

Although we may not be “Da-’i” (caller of people to Islam), with our lives as Muslims, we are to be witnessed by every nation.

• For Muslims, DA’WAH (the call) is still continuously done but more towards their gradual improvement and perfection in Islam. This, technically is regarded as “ISLAH” – to distinguish it from the original meaning of Da’wah which is directed to non-Muslims.

Muslims’ (especially activists, their) understanding of meaning of DA’WAH should not be only the general, but must know its detail connotation, so as to be able to distinguish between:

DA’WAH – directed towards non-Muslims, which primarily this term is meant for. Unfortunately this aspect has now been almost totally neglected. Some called it “direct da’wah”

ISLAH – for every initiatives to bring about improvements towards Muslims, through calling, educating and carrying out their social duties. Those who know, regards these efforts as “indirect da’wah”
