Raja Mahendra Bahadur Singh of FingeshwarOur Hon'ble Chief Guest : A Profile

Raja Shri Mahendra Bahadur Singh of Fingeshwar was born on 31stDec 1925 to Smt Gayatri Devi and Thakur Lal Bahadur Singh. Hejoined Rajkumar College, Raipur in 1936 and then progressed invarious disciplines under the guidance of the legendary Principal MrT.L.H Smith Pearse and his team of teachers. He excelled in sportsespecially, football, hockey and horse polo. However, his forte wasfine arts and music. Shri Mahendra Bahadur Singhji's artistic skillswere nurtured by Mr P.P Bose and his skills on the 'tabla' andharmonium were honed by Mr R.S. Pathak. These talents took himand his brother, late Shri Virendra Bahadur Singh, to the JJ Schoolof Arts (Bombay) in 1942, where they excelled and graduated in 1947.After Indepence, the urge to help the underprivileged and his strongbackground of social service motivated Shri Mahendra Bahadur Singhto enter public life and join politics. He was elected as the M.L.Afrom Seraipali-Basna in 1954 and continued his career as asuccessful politician, till 2000. His term as M.L.A saw a lot toprogress in his constituency, which showed tremendous agriculturalgrowth. In between 1972 and 1978, he was a member of RajyaSabha. When the new state of Chhattisgarh was formed ShriMahendra Bahadur Singh was given the rare distinction of presidingas the first Protem Speaker of the Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha andthe first session was conducted in the Jashpur Hall, at RajkumarCollege.

Hon’ble Raja Shri Mahendra Bahadur Singh Ji of Fingeshwar,former MP and MLA, Maharaja Shri T.S. Singh Deo of Surguja,Chairman, Managing Committee, Raja Shri Ranvijay Singh Ju Deoof Jashpur, Vice President, General Council, Members of theGoverning Body, Parents, Former Students, Members of the Press,Officiating Principal, Members of Staff, Students, Ladies and Gentlemen.

As President of General Council, I warmly welcome you all on theoccasion of the 122nd Annual Prize Giving function of RajkumarCollege, Raipur, Chhattisgarh.

It is our proud privilege to have Raja Shri Mahendra Bahadur Singhof Fingeshwar, amongst us as the Chief Guest on this glorious day.We are indeed extremely grateful to him for sparing his precious time,to be with us for this year’s Annual Prize Giving function.

Raja Shri Mahendra Bahadur Singh ji needs no elaborate introductionas he was educated at our College from 1936 to 1942. However, Iwould like to share some interesting information about our ChiefGuest. Being a student of this school, he along with his twin brother,Late Raja Virendra Bahadur Singh, were called in their school daysas “Phuljhar Brothers”, showed their talent in various activities heldin this school. Apart from academics, Raja Mahendra Bahadur Singhji also showed a lot of interest in hockey and football as well aspainting and sculpture! Later on, he also went to Bombay for higherstudies, to pursue his passion for art in the famous J. J. School ofArt, Bombay .

Being an ardent music lover right from his childhood days, he playedtabla to great excellence. He even took part in All India MusicCompetition at Allahabad and was lauded for his excellence in tablaas well as vocal performance. He excelled in fine arts as well. Inhis long political innings spanning several decades, he was electedMLA for a record six times and was a Member of Rajya Sabha from

1972 to 1978, which shows his popularity in the political circle. Rajasaheb was the first Protem Speaker of Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabhaat this very hall in 2003.

The list of his credentials is endless. He is a renowned musician,sculptor, statesman and sports person par excellence. I could speakfor hours together and still be unable to do justice to the stature ofRaja Shri Mahendra Bahadur Singh Ji.

It is a great honour to welcome you in the 122st Annual Prize Givingfunction. It is our proud privilege to have Raja Mahendra BahadurSingh of Fingeshwar as the Chief Guest on this grand occasion of122st Annual Prize Giving Ceremony. I shall now present before youthe annual report for Rajkumar College. As premier public schooland founder member of IPSC, our school has progressed fromstrength to strength. We have strived hard towards overall andholistic development of the students. Let me first give an accountof our academic results and then move on to sports and extra-curricular activities.

ACADEMICS

The academic year 2016-2017 witnessed extra ordinary results. Thestudents of Class XII, ISC 2017 have excelled. Out of 112 studentstaking this exam, 104 scored first divisions and 8 second divisions.The total number of distinctions were a staggering 300. The sciencestream was topped by Ku. Yogita Agrawal, Commerce stream wastopped by Ku. Shrinkhla Goyal and Humanities stream was toppedby Ku. Shreya Daga. Yamini Patel, Anant Mahawar and DimpleTandan equalled the school record by securing 98% in Hindi. TanishaBathwal and Harman Singh Khanuja equalled the school record bysecuring 97% in Economics. Garima Kumari also equalled the schoolrecord by securing 100% in Physical Education. Two students AdityaAgrawal and Harman Singh Khanuja scored a perfect centum inComputer Science thereby creating a new school record.

The students of Class X, ICSE 2017, also fared equally well. Of the140 students taking this exam, 130 secured first divisions and 10

second divisions. Total number of distinctions were a staggering 507.Science stream was topped by Ku. Apoorva Chawda and thecommerce stream was topped by Ku. Dipti Agrawal. Ku. ApoorvaChawda, Shivam Poddar and Ku. Shraddha Sahu equalled the schoolrecord in Computer Application by scoring 100%. Ku VanshikaAgrawal equalled the school record in Hindi by scoring 99%. KayanatFatima, Utsav Raj Goyal and Ku. Shreya Agrawal equalled the schoolrecord in Physical Education by scoring 100%. Shraddha Sahu andIshi Shrivastava scored 95% in English, Priyanshu Jain scored 98%in Art and Bhavishya Agrawal scored 100% in Economics, therebycreating new school records.

My kudos to all the students and the faculty members for such anexcellent result.

Faculty Training. Regular workshops and training is a must toupdate the knowledge and expertise of the Faculty. So, weperiodically update our teachers’ professional skills by nominatingthem to various workshops and training sessions. During this periodwe organized four workshops in the school. English LanguageWorkshop was conducted by the resource person Dr Kiran Mishra.Workshop by the famous psychologist Dr VS Ravindran, Director,ICTRC New Delhi on the subject of guidance based school educationwas organized by us which was attended by sixty Principals fromC.G and Odisha. He conducted a separate exclusive session for ourfaculty members. A Workshop was held by Mrs Jyotsna Brar, formerPrincipal of Welham’s Girls School, Dehradun for our faculty onstudent – teacher dynamics. Workshop for Pre-primary related issueswas conducted by Mrs Smitha Deepak Mathai.

SPORTS AND EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.I have the honour to state that our students have done exceedinglywell in sports and extra curricular activities.

In football our Girls Team bagged the fourth position in the IPSCUnder 19 tournament held at Birla Public School, Pilani, Rajasthan.Two of our girls Ku. Priyanka Raj and Ku. Veena Painkra have beenselected for the SGFI Football team.

In cricket, our boys team reached the Quarter Finals in IPSC U-17 tournament held at YPS Patiala, Punjab. Kivnoor Chabra has beenselected as a member of State Team (U-16) of the BCCI. AmanBansal has been selected state cricket championship.

In Hockey, six of our girls were selected to represent the State. Ku.Preeti Painkara has been selected for the SGFI Hockey Nationals.

Our Boys team participated IPSC (U-19) Basketball Tournament heldat Mann Public School, Delhi. Ayush Jain and Harsh Kumar Singhwere selected to play in for U-19 SGFI.

In Archery, Sanskar Agrawal and Tushar Khemka bagged 3rd and4th positions respectively at the State Championship.

In Squash, 10 of our students qualified to represent the CG Statein Junior National Championship and all of them have securedpositions in the best 3 in their respective group. At the State andDistrict levels we have performed commendably and won most ofthe individual events. Udit Dubey and Ku. Aishwarya Ghuge werethe winners of U-13 an U-19 age groups respectively. Eisha Chandakbagged the Runners Up in U-15 category. Shradha Sahu, Yash Mohtaand Nimit Mudhiar participated in Junior National Squash Championshipheld at Mayo College, Ajmer.

In Skating, Kalyani Das, Anushaka Burad and Prabal Bhansali wongold medals in the 10th CG Skatting Competition. Kalyani Das baggedone gold and one bronze and Sanket Jain bagged two silver medalsin State Capital Cup. In District Speed Roller Skating Championship,Kalyani Das secured first position in Rink-I and II and Dhruvi Dhariwalsecured First position in Rink V.

In district Badminton tournament, Riya Kothari was the winner whileTulika Ahuja was the runners up in the girls category and AdityaJain was runners up in the boys category. In Equestrian, JaivantaSingh and Chitrabhanu Singh participated in Federation of EquestrianInternationals (FEI) Championship held at PPS Nabha. JaivantaSingh bagged two gold and one silver in Show Jumping event (U-14). Chitrabhanu Singh bagged gold in the Dressage Event (U-12).Jaivanta Singh has been selected to represent India in InternationalChampionships.

In Chess, Kiaan Agrawal, who is just 7 years of age, contested againsthis seniors and won all the 5 matches to win the Player of thetournament in the Interset Competition. He has been consistentlyholding the First rank at the state level Chess Competition for Juniorsfor the last 3 yeas. He was also first at the National level chesscompetition for Juniors in 2016 as also a rank holder at the chesscompetition for U-7 at the International level. He has excelled at theinternational levels by securing 4th position in Rapid Round WorldSchool Chess Championships held in Romania as also securedranking in Asian School Chess Championship in China.

In Athletics, Shriji Agrawal and Arpita Singh secured the first positionin 100 m Run in U-14 and U-17 category respectively of inter schoolzonal competition.

In State Shooting Competition, Khushi Harne won the Gold in point22 open sight shooting competition and Shourya Singh Sisodia wonGold in Sports Pistol category competition. Prithviraj Chandra Deo,Aryan Verma and Avinash Singh Deo won gold in team events ofAir Rifle Peep Sight and point 22 open sight category. Ayush ChandraDeb, Pritviraj Chandra Deo, Avinash Singh Deo and Aryan Vermaparticipated in Odisha State Shooting Championship at Bhubaneswar,Odisha, in which Ayush won gold and Prithviraj won silver in point22 Pistol category.

In Netball Competition, Ku. Akansha Choubey has been selected torepresent the State in National competition.

Our 29 students participated in ‘Let’s Run Merathon’ organized atNaya Raipur on 17 Dec 2017.

In swimming, 5 Students participated in 8th Junior and Sub JuniorState Swimming Championship held Bilaspur. Ashita, Alyosha,Archisha and Aditya won gold in free style relay. In addition, 5 silversand 2 bronze medals were also won by our students. In IPSCSwimming Championship (Girls) our girls won 2 silvers and 6 bronzemedals. Ashita Kedia and Archisha Shrivastava were selected forSGFI Swimming Nationals. In state level championship for schools,Anushka Nag won 3 gold, Ashita Kedia won 2 gold and 1 silver,Alyosha won 1 gold, 1 silver & 1 brozne, Arya Pratap Singh Judeowon 1 gold and 2 silver. Kanak Nandini Singh won 1 gold and 1

silver, Khushi Ahuja won 2 silver and 1 broze, Harsh VardhanLunawat won 2 silver and Aditya Sirkar won 1 gold and 1 silver inthe individual events. U-14 and U-19 Girls teams won gold in freestyle and Medlay Relay and U-17 and U-19 Boys team won silvermedal in the same event. Ashita Kedia, Anushka Nag and AryaPratap Singh Judeo have been selected for SGFI swimming nationalsand Chanchal Yadav for SGFI water polo nationals.

In Aquathlon which entails 400m swimming and 3 km running at onestretch, Ashita Kedia participated in National championship in U-14group and secured 7th position.

Moving on to extra curriculars, 20 students participated in the IPSCMusic Fest hosted jointly by Welham Boys and Girls School,Dehradun. Ku. Y Jahanvi secured the 1st position in the IndianClassical instrumental Solo, Ku. Lisha Ahuja secured the 2nd positionin the Indian Light classical vocal solo category. Ku Bhagyashri Atulkarwas adjudged as the most promising artist in western instrumental.

Fine Arts. Ku. Adrija Poddar and Ku. Chelna Jain secured the 2nd

position with a cash award of Rs 17,000/- at State level paintingcompetition and both will be representing Chhattisgarh State atNational Level Painting Competition.

Model United Nations (MUN). A team of eleven students of ourschool participated in the Model United Nations (MUN) at DPS,Raipur and was awarded the best delegation trophy. Ku. NishkaAgrawal was highly commended for her verbal communication. Ourteam also participated in the IPSC MUN held at Daly College, Indore.

Quiz Competition. Amandeep Dutta and Advik Agrawal participatedin a Quiz Competition at DPS, Risali Sector, Bhilai and were adjudgedthe Runners up.

Tours And Travels. 68 students proceeded to Thailand for aneducational tour in Oct 2017. 74 students proceeded to Manali onan Adventure tour during the same period.

Batch Meets And Reunions . Batch meets and Reunions are greatoccasions when RKCians remember their time spent in RajkumarCollege. This year the batch of ISC of 1967 had their Reunion inthe month of November.

Visits. The following eminent personalities visited RKC :-

(a) Mr. Sarthak Behuria, Alumni and ex Chairman, Indian OilCorporation.

(b) Major General Somnath Jha who is toured entire country ona cylce.

NCC Report :- Out of 23 Air Wing cadets who appeared for ‘A’certificate examination, 22 passed with ‘A’ Grade and 1 with ‘B’Grade. Cadet Aryan Verma participated in the Aero modelingcompetition at Shankracharya College, Raipur and won a cash prizeof Rs 5,000/-. Our troop was adjudged overall 2nd position in theCATC. 25 Air Wing cadets participated in parasailing activitiesconducted by the 3 CG Air Sqn NCC at Charoda, Bhilai.

DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF INFRASTRUCTURE

Govt of India has honoured Rajkumar College by presenting it witha Russian T-55 Main Battle Tank. Ours is one of the very feweducational institutions in the country to be bestowed this honour.Moreover, this is the only private institution to have received a wartrophy in Chhattisgarh. We are positive that the presence of this tankon the campus will motivate our students to serve the country.

Over the last few years there has been a constant emphasis to addfacilities for the students as also look after our heritage property.Towards this we have constructed and handed over 14 New StaffQuarters. The construction of first and second floor of RCBH isnearing completion. Work is in full swing towards construction of fivewooden badminton courts and state of the art 10m air rifle/pistolshooting range as also a Table Tennis and Gymnastic arena. Oneadditional Squash Court has been constructed. We have givenspecial emphasis on perimeter security by strengthening and raisingthe height of our boundary wall. 3 new staff quarters have beenconstructed and handed over as also 10 sub staff quarters are underconstruction. 30 toilets have been constructed for the sub staff.

We are in the process of large scale ecological improvement of theCampus. Towards this we have cleaned the college lake and alsoinstalled a vermi compost plant to recycle plant leaves, food andorganic waste.

Farewells. Mr R.K Bose and Mrs Nandini Chaudhary bid farewellto the institution after retirement. Ms Ruchi Tiwari, Dr Vineeta Diwan,Mr Som Dutt Panda, Ms Anamika Prasad, Mr Mansij M Singh, MsCaressa Benjamin and Ms Sharon Peters left for personal reasons.We wish them all the best.

Obituary. We mourn the sad demise of one of our life member RajaShri Devashish Singh Deo of Narshingpur.

In the end, I would sincerely place my deepest regards and gratitudefor the honourable members of Governing Body especially the officebearers who have provided us with all the moral and financialsupport. The President, General Council and Chairman, ManagingCommittee have made themselves available at short notice for anydecision or advice inspite of their busy schedule. Thus, major creditshould go to the management for the progress of our institution.

I would also like thank all members of the staff, both teaching andadministrative, for their valuable contribution. I am profoundly thankfulto the heads of three wings Ms. A.D. Sapre, Senior Section, Ms.E Rodrigues, Middle Section and Ms. Chitwan Singh, Junior Sectionalong with their Assts Mr B.R Pradhan and Ms S.F Siddiqui towardsthe progress of the school. I am grateful to Mr S.N.S. Deo, our Bursarfor his meticulous work to make this grand function a success. Onespecial mention about the dedication of Mr B R Sahu, the buildingsuperintendent who worked tirelessly round the clock. A specialmention about the good work being put in by the sub staff wouldalso be in order as without their effort the school would not haveprogressed.

As the school motto goes, “Swadeshe Puyate Raja, Vidvan SarvatraPujyate” let the RKCians be learned enough to be respectedwherever they go.
