SINGLE DASH DIVISION RACING 1976 – Present Day Division racing was the inevitable result of the growth in nominations to the program that developed after the purses in 1974 doubled from the previous year. For the first time, the number of horses paying in exceeded 300, and the result would be an increase in the number of starters and the need for more divisions of the classes. In 1975 the annual meeting approved a proposal that would see all divison winners receive trophies with colts and fillies racing in separate divisions. The Colt Stakes would also adopt the single dash format that the tracks used for overnight races.

From The Minutes – A Blair Kelly – Secretary “In his remarks to the annual meeting for 1975 held on January 29th, 1976, President Ron MacArthur proposed that all stakes be single dash events since it was his feeling that this is more popular with the bettors and the spectators. It is also better for the tracks since the number of horses seeking starts has grown considerably. He also urged those responsible to make early contacts for the renewal of the Government grant and the solicitation of sponsors for our races. Discussion on these items resulted in an approved motion to have single dashes with no race offs if a class divides, but to provide a cooler and trophy to each race winner.” Race Highlights West Prince Robbi and Merry Time Finesse split the honours and the purse in the three-year-old pace divisions. Ron Gass recorded his first Colt Stakes win as a driver. Bermac Norma took the three-year-old pacing filly class in a stakes record of 2:10 for Club President Ron MacArthur and wife Bernie as owners and breeders. Slapshot Genessee doubled up as a Colt Stakes winner, taking the three-year-old trot this year. Brackleys Ada set a record for two-year-old trotters for owner/breeder Bradford Murray. It was Earl Smith’s first PEI Colt stakes win. Rae Bell Dan broke the two-year-old pacing colt record and was driven by Orville Willis, who shared ownership with father Charles. Personalities C F Willis and Sons was the name under which Charlie Willis chose to race his many horses over the years. Born in Kingston, he began his racing involvement in 1945, later moving to Covehead and building the Covehead track. From there he moved to O’Leary to begin a produce business and constructed a second track for matinee purposes that still operates as such today. His co-owners were his sons, principally Orville, and on occasion Melvin and Glydon. They patronized the early yearling sales and several times took home the sale topper. With Orville often in the sulky the father-son partnership took home several Colt Stakes trophies notably with Maritime Champion and double Colt Stake winner Dunmore Tweed.

From The Minutes – A. Blair Kelly – Secretary “A minute of silence was held to remember passed members including Lorne Kelly, Grant MacLeod and Jack Gallant among others. The President noted the many changes that have occurred in the past three years including the name change to The PEI Colt Stakes Association Inc., the breeders awards, the increased grant from Government, the changes in race format to single dashes, filly classes and divisions with no race-offs. The first yearling sale took place on September 9th, and resulted in a record for a Maritime sale. “ Sale Highlights Forty-five sold for $2,000 average. Sale topper was Glengyle Flash, bought by Walthen Piers for $11,600. Consigned by James MacGregor. Race Highlights Rae Bell Edna won the faster of the two divisions of the two-year-old fillies with Ralph Frizzell as owner and driver. The other division was won by Stone Heart to give Allie Carr his first Colt Stakes win. Carolyn D took home the first Colt Stakes trophy for long time director Richie MacPhee. It was also a first stakes win for his son Alex as driver. The other three-year-old filly division was won by Robbis Brite Eyes, a filly bred by Club Secretary Dr A B Kelly. Brackleys Ada became a two time stakes winner as she took the three-year-old trot for owner and breeder Brad Murray. Personalities Richard MacPhee known and beloved by all as Richie, was a respected member of the racing community for many years and the founder of a racing family that now extends into its fourth generation. A small man in stature he might have been, but his presence was large, as was his influence on those around him. His first love in life was family, and then horses. This was evident in the way he entwined his two loves by naming his horses after family members. He bred the Colt Stakes winning filly Carolyn D who would go on to a berth in the Gold Cup and Saucer when she was only four years old. Richie was named PEI Horseman Of The Year the same year that Carolyn D was named PEI Horse Of The Year in 1979. He will be remembered as a gentleman who lived by the motto. “ A job worth doing is worth doing well ”.

The President’s View – Ron MacArthur – President “I wish to thank everyone connected with our initial sale especially those who volunteered their time. I suggest we present a plaque to those who made the sale possible by donating their time including Ed Watters, Freddie MacDonald, Bob Connelly, George Riley Collins Wood, Jim MacGregor, Angus MacPhee, Brad Murray, and Alyre Pineau. I also want to thank the CDP for their cooperation. It was the opinion of all that the sale was a success but that the sale entries should be limited to sixty to make it a Select sale. The next sale will be called The Maritime Select Yearling Sale and will be held on September 9th, the same day as the PEI Colt Stakes races. Sale Highlights Sixty-two sold for $2,400 average. Sale topper was Brackleys Star bought by H B Willis for $8,200. Consigned by Brad Murray. Race Highlights Just Like Chum was the winner in the three-year-old pacing filly class for owner George Murphy’s first Colt Stake win. Exit Smiling upset the three-year-old trotters with another win for the combination of Elwood Shaw driving and owner/breeder Dr George Bishop. Dotty Greenwood was driven to a win in the two-year-old trot by her owner/breeder Lloyd Palmer in his first PEI Colt Stakes win. Personalities Ralph Frizzell, a former director of the Association, keeps a small broodmare band at his Blu Meadow farm in Winsloe that has made him one of the most successful small breeders in our recent history. It all began with Rae Bell Edna, a Colt Stakes winner in 1977. She produced the Colt stakes winner Blu Meadow Major, a winner of over $170,000, and also the Colt Stakes winning Blu Meadow Eve. She in turn produced another Colt Stakes winner in Blu Meadow Magic, as well as Blu Meadow Sue, and another daughter that produced a fourth generation winner in Blu Meadow Tara. Rae Bell Edna is the most prolific mare in Colt Stakes history with eight Colt stakes wins in four generations and a family that has produced the winners of almost a million dollars. Ralph, in total, has fifteen winning credits including two as a driver and five as an owner.

The President’s View – Ron MacArthur – President “Congratulations to our new President, Richard MacPhee. I regret that I could not be in attendance for our annual meeting but I have relocated to Florida to train a stable of horses.” Vice President Brad Murray reported on the 1978 sale, which netted a profit of over $4,500 to go towards the purses in 1979. Discussion was held on changing the PEI Colt Stakes from an early closer to a yearling stake to be consistent with other stakes programs in the Maritimes and to avoid unnecessary paper work and confusion for the horsemen paying in. It was left to the directors to draw up the necessary changes and implement them. Sale Highlights Fifty-seven sold for $2,450 average. Sale topper Janet Grace bought by H B Willis for $8,700. Consigned by William Roloson. Race Highlights Total purses for the PEI Colt Stakes were $10,705, a record high, split over six races. Ego Trip lopped almost two seconds off the three-year-old pacing colt standard set in 1971 by That’s My David, with a 2:05.3 win for owner/driver Phil Pinkney. Macban Alice broke the three-year-old filly pacing mark with a 2:07.1 effort that smashed Bermac Norma’s record of 2:10. Radiant Star captured the two-year-old filly pace in record time besting Miramichi Dot’s record by almost five seconds with a 2:11.3 mark. She was driven by owner/breeder Lee Taylor and went on to win Horse of the Year honours on PEI. Personalities Ewen Taylor learned his skills as a breeder of fine yearlings from his father Lee and his first PEI Colt Stakes winner was a record breaker in Ego Trip on the same night as his father also set a stakes record with Radiant Star. From his small breeding operation in Hunter River he had numerous stakes winners including Darn Good Rose, Enersave, Hungry Ego, Whose To Care, Whose To Question, Burden Of Freedom and many more. In all he has eight PEI Colt Stakes winners as a breeder and three Maritime Champions to make him one of the most successful small breeders and sale consignors in recent history on Prince Edward Island. He served as a director of the PEI Colt Stakes.

From The Minutes – Erwin Andrew – Secretary “There was a conflict between the PEI yearling sale and the Atlantic Sires sale date on September 5th. It was suggested that we switch to Friday for the sale since many horsemen have conflicts with races on the Saturday. A joint meeting was held between the committees of both sales and an agreement to rotate dates was arrived at holding the sales two weeks apart and taking turns being first. The date chosen for the PEI sale was Friday September 19th with the races to be held on Thursday 18th. Questions arose on the selection criteria for the sale and there were suggestions to increase the number accepted. There are, however, not enough stalls to accommodate more yearlings so a selection process will be necessary.” Sale Highlights Sixty-two sold for $2,500 average. Sale topper was Glengyle Joey bought by Harold Stead Jr for $25,000. Consigned by James MacGregor. Race Highlights Radiant Star repeated as a PEI Colt Stakes winner by winning the three-year-old filly pace and tying the previous year’s record of 2:07.1. W P Countess broke the two-year-old filly record and provided Walthen Piers his first stakes win as a breeder/owner. He also owned the winner of one of the three-year-old stake divisions, Sunrise Cagney. The other colt division was won by Bayside Katfish, trained by J Alan Smith and driven by his son Roger for owner Elgin Veno. It was a first Colt Stake win all around for the three of them. Personalities Dr A Blair Kelly is part of a long tradition of family involvement in the PEI Colt Stakes since his uncle, Willard Kelly, was one of the founding members and a Past President of the original Harness Racing Club. His father Lorne was a director and Blair has served as a director, secretary and President, on two occasions, in addition to being named an Honorary Director of the PEI Colt Stakes for his many years of service. Dr Kelly has bred and owned several stakes winners including Rivervue Skye who set the four-year-old pacing mare record in the 1995 edition of the PEI Colt Stakes. He was also the breeder of 1977 winner Robbis Brite Eyes and most recently won in 2005 with the three-year-old pacing colt Sounding. He was also a co-owner of the stakes winning Lookaway in 1970 with former USTA director Don Simmonds.

From The Minutes – Erwin Andrew – Secretary “Dr Blair Kelly’s annual report as President included a tribute to retiring director Richard MacPhee. Richie was thanked for his many years of service to the Association and to the sport in general and accorded a standing ovation. A motion was passed to hire a part time Secretary. The question of agreement on sale dates was discussed again and a date of Friday, September 11th was approved. Wally Wood suggested we have the sale on the third Friday of September on a regular basis and have the stakes on the evening before. The sale commission was increased to 7% from 5%.” Sale Highlights Fifty-eight sold for $2,490 average. Sale topper was Island Drummer bought by Edward MacLeod for $7,900. Race Time Robbi dropped the three-year-old filly record to 2:06.3 just after Arrive In Style had tied the previous record in an earlier filly pace division. P H George smashed the two-year-old pacing colt record with an amazing 2:04.4 mile to be the first sub 2:05 two-year-old for Doug Walsh and breeder/owner James Shive. They came right back in the two-year-old filly pace with P H Scooter for another record. Pack Truce and Pack Baron set records in the two-year-old and three-year-old trot classes for breeder Dr George Bishop as he added to his long list of Colt Stakes stakes victories, which would total fifteen as a breeder and eight as an owner over a period of 30 years. Personalities Dr Donald Ling was a PEI Colt Stakes director for several years and ran a boutique breeding operation that produced several stakes winners in a short period of time, including Harborvue Anne and double winner Harborvue Bunter. A student of pedigrees, he was the pedigree reader in several of the early yearling sales. Dr Ling was active also in the Atlantic Sires organization as President as well as serving as president of the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The President’s View – Dr A B Kelly – President “I am pleased to report that we have a new manager/secretary in Norman Hall who will need all the assistance and cooperation of our directors and members to ensure that the PEI Colt Stakes continues to grow and prosper. Our priorities must be to put the stake payment process and the handling of the sale on a sound financial basis in view of the decision taken at our annual meeting to have an annual audit of our records. Our manager is to receive $1,200 per year, which will cover any related travel, phone or business expenses. Mr Hall has already managed to have the annual grant from Government increased by $1,000 and believes that once we have our business affairs in order more will be forthcoming.” Sale Highlights Sixty-six sold for $2,540 average. Sale topper was Whos To Blame bought by Phil Pinkney for $12,000. Consigned by Ewen Taylor. Race Highlights P H Scooter made it two years in a row as a Colt Stakes winner, this time in a division of the three-year-old fillies. The other division was won by Island Cindy bred by Hollylaine Farms. That famous Island standardbred nursery also produced Island Dust, winner of the two-year-old filly class. B J Amigo and B J Andy won their respective divisions of the three-year-old pacing colts for breeder Bert Honkoop’s first Colt Stakes trophies. Kings Derby made it two years in a row for owner George Irvine, winning the two-year-old trot class. Personalities Dr. Jim Shive set up shop as a veterinarian in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia and shortly afterwards began breeding horses at his Penn Hills Farm. His astute purchase of the stallion Tarport Ervin soon returned big dividends. He produced several standouts in his first crop in 1976, including stakes champion Kilkerran Ella and Colt Stakes winner P H Tim. His Penn Hills youngsters have set several records in Colt Stakes action, with P H George and P H Scooter setting two-year-old records in 1981, P H Keyta the three-year-old filly record in 1989, and most recently the three-year-old colt record of 1:55.4 by P H Jimmy in 2005. He is one of only two breeders to claim all four pacing records in PEI Colt Stakes history.

The President’s View – Wallace Wood – President “Our stakes program continues to grow with nine divisions racing this year. Your executive has decided to charge a membership fee of $5 for each person that pays a colt into the PEI Colt Stakes program. This will assist with the growing costs of administration, one of which is the printing and mailing of an annual newsletter called “On Gait”, which will be sent to over four hundred members this year throughout the Maritimes. The newsletter will be prepared by our manager and will contain lists of the horses eligible to our two and three-year-old races as well as news of upcoming events such as our yearling sale or other activities. The first publication will be in August in time for Old Home Week.” Sale Highlights Fifty-four sold for $3,169 average. Sale topper was Whos To Bless bought by Skip Lewis for $12,700. Consigned by Ewen Taylor. Race Highlights Opinions Fae set a new Stakes record of 2:04 in the three-year-old filly class. Charles Rennison owned the filly bred by George Canning of Pugwash. Wind Warning gave Richard Gallant of Moncton his first Stakes trophy as he drove the son of AC’s Dandy to a win in the two-year-old colt class. Tags Last Byrd repeated as a Colt Stakes winner by taking a division of the three-year-old pacing colts for owner and breeder Bill Lanigan’s second of four victories to date.. Maple Leaf Arnett joined the long list of stakes winners for Ralph Annear who bred, owned, trained and drove the two-year-old. Personalities Ron Kennedy was President of the PEI Colt Stakes from 1986 to 1988. The former Fire Marshall of Prince Edward Island lit up the track with several stakes winners with trainer/driver Albert Bernard. He preferred the trotting gait and Albert was one of the best in the business when it came to developing young trotters as attested to by a Colt Stakes win with Lucktows Flame in record time in 1984 and also with Island Kaptain at three. There was also success on the pace with Dandy Gal, a winner in 1987, and Boston Fenway in 1990.

The President’s View – Wallace Wood – President “An increase in the sustaining fees resulted in a significant increase in total purses which reached $48,214 this year. Looking back we see that this is over 450% higher than the purses were five years ago when the total was just $10,705. The PEI Colt Stakes have grown in this our 50th anniversary year and now with the introduction of the Maritime Breeders Futurity and the growth of the Atlantic Sires Stakes, we have truly come a long way in supporting Maritime bred colts and fillies.” Sale Highlights Sixty-eight sold for $2,972 average. Sale topper was Island Gambler bought by Phil Pinkney for $10,700. Consigned by Robert Webster of Hollylaine Farm. Race Highlights Maple Grove Triton cut over two seconds off the two-year-old pacing colt record for Wally Hennessey, who set another record in a division of the three-year-old pacing colts with Shalom Arly. That record was short lived as Dunachton Dandy later became the first three-year-old colt to break the 2:00 barrier with his 1:59.3 win for Richard Gallant. Lucktows Flame set a new mark for three-year-old trotters as PEI Colt Stakes director Ron Kennedy got his first Colt Stakes win. Maple Leaf Bramble broke the two-year-old trot record - yet another in the long list of stakes winners bred, owned, trained and driven by Ralph Annear. Harborvue Anne and Harborvue Bunter made their breeder, Dr Donald Ling, doubly proud in winning divisions of the three-year-old filly and two-year-old colt pacers. Personalities Richard Gallant was born on the family farm in Oyster Bed Bridge where his father Angus had horses that he raced for fun at Covehead and on the ice. Richard was an engineer by trade and settled in Moncton just down the road from the track in Dieppe. Among his many stakes winners as an owner, trainer and driver, was Dunachton Dandy, the first sub 2:00 Colt Stakes winner as well as Colt Stakes events with Wind Warning, Island Hustler and Atlantic Champion Island Governess in a Colt Stakes record for two-year-old filly pacers driven by Wally Hennessey.

The President’s View – Wallace Wood – President “Purses went over $48,000 this year as a record twelve divisions of the PEI Colt Stakes were raced. Three records were set as the colts and fillies get better each year.” Sale Highlights Sixty-two sold for $2,600 average. Sale topper was Naked Emotion bought by Alan MacDonald for $5,600. Consigned by Ewen Taylor. Race Highlights Maple Leaf Bramble repeated with another stakes record in the three-year-old trot for Ralph Annear. Island Governess set a stakes record of 2:05 for the two-year-old filly pacers for Wally Hennessey’s third stakes record in two years. No Bourbon dropped the record for the three-year-old fillies for driver Bill Hicken’s first stakes win and he followed it up with a win with Utas Elsie in the two-year-old filly class. Harborvue Bunter repeated as a PEI Colt stakes winner this time in the three-year-old colt division with Paul MacDonald driving. Dunmore Tweed came close to the two-year-old trot record in taking his class for Charlie Willis and Sons as Marcel Barrieau struck for his third Colt Stakes win in four years. Personalities Hollylaine Island Farm owned by Robert and Nina Webster has been in the forefront of Island breeding for the last thirty-two years. Standing such sires as A Cs Dandy, Sultros Rainbow, Maxwell Almahurst, Curtis Hanover, This Cams For You, Force Of Life and others, coupled with their own broodmare band, they have produced many stakes performers and Maritime Champions. As a veterinarian he once worked for the prestigious Armstrong Brothers farm in Ontario, and has a wealth of experience in how to put up great looking yearlings that have stakes potential. Island Governess was one of the first but then there was the great Island Storm, Invader, Kaptain, Missile, Panther, Reba, Ribbon, Tradition and many more. In the past three crops of Hollylaine yearlings all of them have raced at two or three. In total Hollylaine Island Farm has bred twenty-nine PEI Colt Stakes winners. The farm ranks as the top breeding farm in the Maritimes in this category.

The President’s View – Ronald Kennedy – President “There were twelve PEI Colt Stakes divisions and three new stakes records in 1986. The trotting divisions were raced in a special Trotfest program on the Saturday, which featured an eight-race program completely devoted to the trotting breed. In addition to the stakes there were several races at different distances including a two-mile race. A trotting bred section of the yearling sale was also conducted for the first time on the same day.” Sale Highlights Seventy-two sold for $2,100 average. Sale topper was Lubricant bought by Bert Haneveld for $6,700. Consigned by Lee Taylor. Race Highlights Utas Smokey set a new two-year-old pacing colt record of 2:02.2 for Steve Mahar’s first Colt Stakes win. Oh That Treasure became the first 2:10 two-year-old trotter in the history of the Colt Stakes for perennial stakes winner Ralph Annear. Some Nice broke the three-year-old pacing filly record with a 2:03 clocking for Mike Downey and breeder/owner David Kileel. Dunmore Tweed repeated his previous year’s PEI Stakes win in the trotting ranks as he won easily for Marcel Barrieau, who also won a two-year-old pacing filly division with Precious Jigtime. Personalities Ralph McCully , the personable master of Dunmore Farm in Antigonish, has an enviable record in producing Colt Stakes winning trotters. He has bred ten winners, including three in which he retained ownership. His favorite was the Maritime Champion Dunmore Skye who won in 1996 with Clare MacDonald driving. That combination would produce two more winners but most recently, Edward “Teddy” Smallwood has been the one to take the Dunmore trotters to the Colt Stakes winner circle with Dunmore TKO, Dunmore Alpha and, in 2008, with the two-year-old winner Dunmore Chip. Ralph had the unique experience of having three of his two-year-old trotters finish 1-2-3 in The Globetrotter stake in 2008. His secret ? “Improve your stock to improve your chances.” Ralph currently stands the top producing trotting sire in the Maritimes named Black River, a son of Donerail.

The President’s View – Ronald Kennedy – President “A record thirteen PEI Colt Stakes divisions were raced in 1987 in very poor weather. Once again the trotters raced as part of the Trotfest program on Saturday afternoon after the trotting yearling sale in the morning. Trotfest is a unique program of its kind in North America as it features a full program devoted to the trotting breed with races for all ages and at different distances.” Sale Highlights 63 sold for $3,360 average. Sale topper was Elusive Dream bought by Russell Vassalo for $15,500. Consigned by Ewen Taylor. Lubricant , also owned by Haneveld, won a division of the two-year-old filly pace. Dunmore Able captured the two-year-old trot driven by Claire MacDonald in what was her first of thirty-one PEI Colt Stakes wins and still counting. Kilkerran Fury capped a sensational two-year-old season, winning his division of the colt pacers with ease for owner Walthen Piers. Another son of Oil Count, Oil Can, took the other division winning for owner/trainer Carl Jamieson in his only Colt Stakes win.. Bill Be Sure and Crown N Anchor swept the three-year-old trot divisions adding two more trophies to Dr George Bishop’s record collection as a breeder. Personalities George Riley is a long time member of the PEI Colt Stakes, serving on two occasions as a director. He is currently the breeder director for PEI on the Standardbred Canada board. Riley Farms had a string of stakes successes following the acquisition of Knightly Blue Chip. George had a reputation for putting beautiful yearlings through the ring at the annual sale and Knightly Blue Chip was the perfect sire to support that reputation at the sales and on the racetrack. His favorite filly was $135,000 winner Mighty Sassy, a homebred stakes winner in 2000 that he retained as a broodmare to produce another stakes winner in 2008 in Larshegoes by Largo, another of his sires.

The President’s View – Ronald Kennedy – President “Centennial year at the CDP was cause for some special occasions and the PEI Colt Stakes celebrated it with a full week of activities around the stakes and the sale in September. The week was called “The Main Event” and manager Norman Hall put together four nights of racing including a revival of the four-year-old classes, a special sale on Saturday of trotters only with 28 entries, and a mixed sale, all in addition to our regular select sale on Friday evening. With a big increase in the Government purse support the purses set an all time record of $76,400. As part of the new funding agreement we will race a program of early closing stakes in Summerside including the Callbeck stakes for two-year-olds and the Bob Dewar and Ruby Chappell Memorials and the Maple Leaf Trot, all for three-year-olds.” Sale Highlights Seventy-two sold for $2,450 average. Sale topper was O Happy Day bought by Russell Vassalo of New Jersey for $13,100. Consigned by Tom MacPhee of Cornwall. Race Highlights Kilkerran Fury became a repeat Colt Stakes winner as he won a division of the three-year-old colts. Island Invader won in another division for Joe Smallwood who added two more winners with stakes records in the two- year-old colt pace with Acton Stinger, and in the three-year-old trot with J K Crown . Dawn Down broke the two-year-old filly pace record for owner/breeder Milton Downey. Courtney Bay, Solar Knight and Rustico Hotshot all made the record book in the four-year-old classes as they were raced for the first time since 1974. Personalities Joe Smallwood (The Fox, as he is better known) has a remarkable and unique record in Colt Stakes action as a breeder, owner and driver, not only because of the number of victories he has claimed but also the record number of Colt Stakes record miles he has produced with both pacers and trotters. At one time he held four separate class records and has equalled or broken the record in all classes at one time or other. His forty wins, as either a breeder with eight, owner with thirteen or driver with nineteen, and many times all three at once, rank him among the most successful all-around participants in our history.

The President’s View – Allison Carr – President “The four-year-old races were conducted in Summerside this year, as construction of the new Canada Games Centre forced the relocation of our yearling sale to Summerside also. The PEI Colt Stakes was pleased to host a reception for Stan Bergstein, Executive Director of Harness Tracks of America, who later participated in a panel discussion on the future of standardbred racing in North America. He was joined by several other personalities and an attendance of almost 200 interested horse people. Mr Bergstein also took a turn as pedigree reader at the sale and presented coolers for the four-year-old races.” Sale Highlights Fifty-nine sold for $3,160 average. Sale topper was Paris Escapade bought by Lee Blaikie for $13,000. Consigned by Ewen Taylor. Race Highlights Kilkerran Fury repeated again and joined a select few horses to win a Colt Stakes race at 2, 3, and 4 years old, setting a Colt Stakes record for the four-year-olds in the process. Driver Emmons Mackay had earlier in the week won two other Colt Stakes events with Lambourghinis Pride for wife Dixie in a two-year-old colt division, then with Selkirk in a three-year-old colt division. J K Beauty set a stakes record for two-year-old fillies for Joe Smallwood who returned for another stakes record, his fourth in two years, with a win by J K Crown in the three-year-old trot. He then won the other division of the trot with J K Classic to complete a rare driving triple in Colt Stakes action. P H Keyta shaved a second off the three-year-old filly record with Clare MacDonald driving for owner Ralph Annear. Personalities Allison Carr remembers his first drive at Covehead Raceway, in fact he remembers the names of horses and their owners from way back in the forties and fifties. He first joined the old PEI Harness Racing Club in 1953, and is still active today as a director for the PEI Colt Stakes. He also served as President in 1989-90. Allie has won three Colt Stakes races along the way, with Stone Heart in 1977, MacBan Alice as co-owner with his son John, then in 2000 with his best horse Charlottes Den, co-owned by his long time trainer and friend John Davies of Saint John.

Brite Jennifer set a stakes record for three-year-old pacing fillies of 1:59.4 in one division while J K Beauty also broke the previous record for Joe Smallwood. Philip Down won a division of the two-year-old pacing colts for owner Milton Downey who also had a winner in Burden Of Freedom in a three-year-old colt division. Island Kaptain repeated as a PEI Colt Stake winner in the three-year-old trot for owner and previous Colt Stakes President Ron Kennedy, who also owned the winner of the four-year-old colt pace in Boston Fenway. Personalities Emmett Bernard was from the harness racing hotbed of Hunter River and was part of an extended family of excellent horsemen. Emmett got the name “Cowboy” for his fearless ability to take on any and every bad actor that no-one else would drive. Son Albert became a top trainer of young horses, with several Colt Stakes credits for owner and former Club President Ron Kennedy. Albert trained and drove a number of PEI Colt stakes winners for his father including Bill Be Sure, Island Kaptain at two, Island Panther, and Island Minstrel. Between them they drove thirteen Colt Stakes winners. Albert’s son Shane also won a Colt Stakes race with Scarlet Hussy in 1996 for owner Norman Hall, and with Miss Lori in 1998 to complete a rare three generation record of stakes wins for a family.

The President’s View – Lee Taylor– President Horse Industry Week was again a big success. The full week of activities sponsored by the PEI Colt Stakes drew many visitors from around the Maritimes. Our special guest this year was Jack McNiven of Killean Acres in Ontario, who put on a seminar for over 50 of our breeders on yearling preparation. A vote of thanks is due to our manager who puts a lot of time and effort into organizing the PEI Colt Stakes activities. Sale Highlights Sixty-nine sold for an average of $3,280. Sale topper was bought for $12,500. Race Highlights Diplomat Katie in the four-year-old pacing filly class, Grampys Winner in the three-year-old colt, and Tom Boy Knight in the three-year-old filly were all repeat winners Scarlet Dusk won the four-year-old trot for driver Daryl MacLean with his father, Gordon, owning and they combined for another win with Scarlet Midnight in the two-year-old trot Some Nice Ketch was the second winner of the week for driver Russell Burgoyne and for owner Alexander Fraser. Personalities Ron and Shelley Gass, a father and daughter team from Cornwall, have been breeding horses with the Dusty Lane prefix for the last twenty-five years and along the way they have been the proud breeders, owners or in the case of Ron, the driver, of a number of Colt Stakes winners. Their breeding credits total seven and include the trotting colts Dusty Lane Dillon and Demon. In 1998 they swept the two-year-old trot divisions with Dusty Lane Cody bred by Ron, and Tasha with Shelley as the breeder, both driven by Ron. Dusty Lane Diva, a two-year-old winner in 2006 continued their winning tradition as breeders and gave owner Earl Watts his first Colt Stakes win. The President’s View – Lee Taylor – President “Not enough entries into our four-year-old stakes has resulted in them being dropped for this year. Also due to the increasingly crowded stakes schedule we had to move our trotting stakes to Summerside. Our pacing stakes this year had a historic first with Actons Heritage becoming the first sub 2:00 two-year-old setting a stakes and track record. Our first winning two-year-old colt pacer was C Harry Budlong whose record in 1944 was 2:27 ¾. We have indeed come a long way in developing our breed in the Maritimes. Congratulations to breeder Roddy MacLeod on raising this great colt.” Sale Highlights Sixty-seven sold for an average of $3,050. Sale topper CLs Social Whirl was bought by Brent Drake for $7,700. Consigned by Collins Wood. Race Highlights Actons Heritage became the first sub 2:00 two-year-old in Colt Stakes history, winning for owner Louis Clark and breeder Roddie MacLeod in 1:59.4. Scarlet Midnight repeated as a Colt Stakes winner to take the three-year-old trot in a race held in Summerside. Wispering Abe set a stakes record for two-year-old fillies with Danny Romo catch driving for owner Lee Taylor. Shalom Sham in the three-year-old filly class and Winners Stinger in the three-year-old Colt stake gave Joe Smallwood two Stakes wins on the day. Nikway Rafferty , a bargain priced yearling at the Truro sale, gave Alfred “Apps” Arsenault his only Colt Stakes winner and was driven by son Kenny, now one of the top five drivers in wins in the Colt Stakes. Personalities Danny Romo is one of the winningest Colt Stakes drivers in recent history. Not only has the Nova Scotia native won twenty-eight individual races but along the way, he has set or equaled five Colt Stakes records. He drove the first sub 2:00 two-year-old in Acton’s Heritage and holds the current three-year-old of 1:55.2 set by Flaming Moe, breaking his own previous record set by Firm’s Phantom. His first win in Colt Stakes action was also a record with Pack Truce.

The President’s View – Lee Taylor – President Six divisions of three-year-old colts, the most divisions ever, showed up to contest the pacing colt stakes. There were eighteen divisions in total, another record, and once again the trotters were raced in Summerside. In order to speed up the sale and hopefully improve the quality of the yearlings, a minimum start up bid of $1,500 was introduced. Of the 76 entries 23 did not meet the minimum bid and were passed from the ring unsold, Most were sold, however, before they left the sale building. Sale Highlights Fifty-three sold for an average of $3,950. Sale topper Abes Magic bought by Burco Stable for $12,000. Consigned by Ewen Taylor. Race Highlights Dexters Jane produced the only new record with a 2:02.2 win in the two-year-old pacing filly stake with Earl Smith driving for Cape Breton owner Russ Doyle. Molzan repeated as a Colt Stakes winner to take one of the three-year-old pacing filly divisions for owner/breeder Louis McIsaac. Cashunderthetable and Dynamite Treasure each won a division of the three-year-old colts with Gilles Barrieau driving in his first Colt Stakes wins. Jaguar Knight was also a New Brunswick based winner in another of the record six colt divisions for Gary MacDonald who also had a winner in the three-year-old filly pace with Cindyella, a first for owner Boyde White. Island Missile gave Joe Smallwood yet another driving win in Colt Stakes action. Personalities J Alan and Earl Smith come from a family, and an area, Hunter River, that is steeped in harness racing tradition. Alan was a director and President of the PEI Colt Stakes in 1996 and although he never won a Colt Stakes race, his son Earl has more than made up for it with twenty-nine wins as a driver including a double win with his own filly Charlottes Blues. Earl has been one of the top conditioners of young horses at the Charlottetown track for over twenty years and continues today with two more wins in the 2008 edition of the PEI Colt Stakes with the two year old pacing colts Big Oster and Woodmere Fastball. Another son, Roger, won with Bayside Katfish in 1980.

The President’s View – Ronald McInnis – President “This was our sixtieth anniversary year and a celebration was held at Norman Hall’s property to which all the directors as well as living past Presidents were invited. Also attending were honorary directors Norah Longworth, Dr Blair Kelly, Lee Taylor, and Hollis Jenkins. The Colt Stakes had a record year to mark the anniversary with nineteen races and a purse total of over $86,000 to go with three new racing records and at the sale the overall average was the highest ever.” Sale Highlights Sixty-seven sold for an average of $4,067. Sale topper R F Conrad was bought by Randy Taft for $18,500. Consigned by Riley Farms. Race Highlights West River Diesel became one of only a handful of horses to win three consecutive Colt Stakes races and set a four-year-old record doing it in 1:58.1. It was also one of a record four winners on the week for driver Claire MacDonald as she also won with Magic Dexter, a repeat winner, CLs Social Whirl, and her own West River Exotic. J K Senator set another record for Joe Smallwood in the three-year-old pacing colts class. That record was tied by Guy On The Go in a division of the same class for owner Sandy Fraser. Smallwood also won a two-year-old pacing colt division with Acton Amigo. Buster Hill repeated as a Colt Stakes winner by winning a three-year-old trot division for owner Shaun MacIsaac. Personalities Collins Lea Wood was a livestock dealer and a horse trader from an early age. He also took up harness racing as a boy and remembers his first race on the ice of Charlottetown harbour. His interest in horses led him to breed his own under the CL’s name and he did so with considerable success. In 1994 he had two wins as a breeder with CL’s Social Whirl and CL’s Beauty and he was also the breeder of record and owner of Colt Stakes winner Woodmere Jilly. His greatest impact on the breeding industry on PEI, however, has been as a result of the many mares that he brought in from sales in the United States. There were many stakes winners raised from such mares including Dunachton Dandy, the first sub 2:00 two-year-old Colt Stakes winner. He was named PEI Horseman Of The Year in 2002.

The President’s View – Ronald McInnis – President “In order to fill the classes, the four-year-old stakes were opened up to four years and older. Together with the four-year-old classes there were twenty-four races in total, another record. West River Diesel raced in the PEI Colt Stakes as a five-year-old this year and won his third consecutive stake and second time at four or older. This is a record that will probably never be broken. The yearling sale average dropped back this year to $3,485, which was still, however, the third best average since the sale started. Only six horses did not meet the starting bid of $1,500”. Sale Highlights Sixty-five sold for an average of $3,485. Sale topper Hes A Knight was bought by Doug Hill for $12,700. Consigned by George and Arthur Millar of Tyne Valley. Race Highlights West River Diesel added another history making mile with his third consecutive PEI Colt Stakes victory and his second Four-year-old and up victory, the only horse to do so. Rustico Bullet and Rustico Bay won the two-year-old trot divisions, both owned and driven by Joe Smallwood who purchased both in the PEI Select sale from consignor and breeder John Pineau. Miss Kay Mac smashed the three-year-old trotting record with a 2:01.3 mile for Len McGuigan and her owner and breeder Duncan MacKay who was also a winner with Miss Autumn Time in 1989. Rivervue Skye was a winner for owner and breeder Dr A B Kelly in the four-year-old filly. It was Blair’s third winning connection. Personalities Ronald McInnis has been a long time member of the PEI Colt Stakes. He served as a director for several years and was President of the PEI Colt Stakes for 1993-1995. He kept a small breeding operation in Earnscliffe where he raised yearlings with the Edgewater name. Edgewater Wave was a Colt Stakes winner for Ron as breeder in 1999 and another PEI Colt Stakes win came with Brendons Gal pacing in 2:00, a filly he bred in partnership with Jim Quinn of Belfast. One of his favorite and most successful foals was Edgewater Rb with a record of 1:54 and approaching $100,000 in earnings racing in the Maritimes.

The President’s View – J Alan Smith – President “This year was a pivotal one for the future of harness racing and the PEI Colt Stakes. The PEI Government, at the urging of our organization and the Charlottetown Driving Park, has commissioned a study by Smith Green Associates on the future of the racing industry on PEI. The coming of VLT’s to the Island has impacted the wager considerably and there is a need to identify what, if anything, can be done to offset the effect of Government sponsored competition. Norman Hall appeared at a standing committee of the legislature on our behalf to argue for a share of lottery profits to be granted to the tracks and stakes programs”. Sale Highlights Sixty-five sold for an average of $4,012. Sale topper Woodmere Bruiser was bought by Kansas Snow for $14,500. Consigned by Woodmere Farms of Marshfield. Race Highlights Woodmere Topcat won a two-year-old pacing class for breeder Wally Wood as did two other colts Woodmere Windrop and Woodmere Jet, while three-year-old winners, Woodmere Bunkins and Lets Travel, were also raised at Woodmere Farms. Island Quentin set a new stakes record of 1:58.3 for the three-year-old pacing colts as owner Rollie Larkin claimed his first trophy. Scarlet Hussy came within a tick of a stakes record in a three-year-old filly pace division for a first win for owner Norman Hall and driver Shane Bernard. Charlottes Blues repeated in the Colt Stakes with a victory in a three-year-old filly race. Personalities Wallace (Wally) Wood started off as a breeder under his East River Farm, a noted dairy farm with top pedigreed cattle. He has been active in Colt Stakes business as a director and as President in 1983-85, and has served in several industry organizations. He retired from farming and moved across the road in Marshfield to set up Woodmere Farms and his breeding operation stood Harrods, a full brother to Abercrombie, as well as Drop Off, arguably one of the greatest sires ever to stand in the Maritimes. Woodmere yearlings are eagerly sought in the yearling sales because of their pedigrees and physical excellence.

The President’s View – Heath Cobb – President “In a follow up to the Smith Green report on the future of harness racing on PEI, an industry committee was formed to review the study and make specific proposals to Government. Our Colt Stakes representative on the committee was Norman Hall and he and Dr Ian Moore co-authored the final report which recommended, among other things, the establishment of a permanent position within government to handle industry issues, a role for Atlantic Lotto in promoting harness racing, establishment of an industry group to provide input to government, and increased funding for purses based on a share of lottery and VLT revenues. This was submitted in April 1997”. Sale Highlights Sixty-four sold for an average of $3,609. Sale topper Close Knit Family bought by Hubert Leslie for $12,500. Consigned by Riley Farms. Race Highlights Island Storm won a two-year-old division on his way to a Mariime Championship for breeder Hollylaine Farm who had two other stakes winners in Island Reba and Island Ribbon in the three-year-old filly class. Woodmere Bruiser, the sale topper from 1996, proved his worth with a 2:00 score for Kansas Snow and partners. Rustico Bayelbay made it two years in a row that breeder/owner/driver John Pineau won a two-year-old trot division. Woodmere Jet repeated as a Colt Stakes winner and this time did it in stakes record time for a three-year-old colt of 1:57.3 for co-owners Ron Matheson, Vince Mulligan and Walter Simmons. Personalities Heath Cobb was President of the PEI Colt Stakes from 1997-1998. His Colt Stakes winning connection was Renaissant in 1995, bred by his father Tom Cobb of Kensington and a Maritime Champion and Colt Stakes winner at three. Renaissant produced a very good filly in H Cs Renaissant for Heath as the breeder and she just missed a Colt Stakes win on her way to almost $100,000 in earnings and a record of 1:57.2f. She also produced a stakes placed trotting filly called Meliss B, by accident rather than by design, when the local Veterinarian got his semen vials mixed up.

The President’s View – Heath Cobb – President “We were pleased to see the government respond to the Task Force recommendations to establish a position in Government to liaise with the industry and welcome the appointment of Kent Oakes, son of a former Colt Stakes member and stakes winner Charles Oakes of North Wiltshire. The arrangement to have Atlantic Lotto take over responsibility for promotion of racing at Maritime tracks is also welcomed. A proposal was made by Norman Hall at our annual meeting in February to combine our Island stakes programs into an Island Breeders Series with championship finals at year-end. A committee was formed to meet with the Island tracks to set a format and schedule”. Sale Highlights Fifty-four sold for an average of $3,855. Sale topper Charlottes Titan bought by Doug Hill for $17,000. Consigned by Charlotte Ranch. Race Highlights Island Storm was a repeat Colt Stakes winner for Gilles Barrieau this time in the three-year-old pacing colt ranks. Dusty Lane Tasha and Dusty Lane Cody, won the two-year-old trot divisions for driver Ron Gass and he would return to the winners circle later on the program for a win in the three-year-old trot with Tough Revenge. Two of the three were bred by Ron and the other by his daughter Shelley. Miss Flamingo Too set a stakes record for three-year-old pacing fillies for Phil Pinkney who had another winner in This Dons For You in a three-year-old pacing colt division. Personalities Hugh Baird operates a veterinary practice in Hampton, New Brunswick, and has had a very successful other career in breeding quality standardbreds. He stood Quality Blue Chip and currently stands the stallion Quick Comeback. He has made his mark in the Colt Stakes record books with nine wins and three stakes records with such horses as double winner Calgary Flutie by Quality Blue Chip, his half brother Argo Flutie by Quick Comeback, record breaking Le Win Skied, the first sub 2:00 two-year-old filly, current three-year-old record holder Flaming Moe, and one of the richest earning Maritime breds in Clinton Debriefed, a winner of almost $450,000 lifetime, all also by Quick Comeback.

The President’s View – Pat McHugh – President “Options for changing the sale were discussed. It was decided that we should establish a sale committee of the consignors with a view to the sale becoming independent of the PEI Colt Stakes. Kent Oakes reported that the Provincial Government was reviewing the situation with a view to increasing support for breeders. Just prior to the sale an increase of $30,000 in the Government grant was announced. During Old Home Week we convened a meeting of Maritime industry representatives to discuss what could be done to establish better cooperation within the industry. The meeting supported the idea of a Regional Industry Council with Provincial Chapters.” Sale Highlights Fifty sold for a record average of $4,824. Sale topper Woodmere Fastroute bought by Mel Willis for $19,000. Consigned by Woodmere Farm Race Highlights Last Of Bella won for the first of three wins for driver Ken Arsenault. His other winners came with the two-year-old trotter called Buddywhatshisname and the three-year-old pacing filly Glengyle Marj. Maple Leaf Gem was the first of two winners for Ralph Annear in the three-year-old trot class. His other win was with another of his own Maple Leaf Gentry. Argo Flutie took the fastest three-year-old colt pace over a wet track in 2:08.4. Owned by Hugh Baird he repeated the effort of his half brother Calgary Flutie four years earlier. Personalities Dunachton Farms has the honour of breeding the first Maritime bred three-year-old colt to pace under 2:00 on Prince Edward Island and it was in a PEI Colt Stakes race. Dunachton Dandy, owned and driven by Richard Gallant, set the record of 1:59.3 in 1984 and it was ten more years before it was broken. Don Smith, owner of the farm, was a gracious host for several years of an Old Home Week breakfast event which gave everyone a chance to see his usual fine group of yearlings including a filly that was one of the best of her day, renamed Glengyle Marj, and a horse that became a Maritime pacing legend in Dunachton Gale, both of which were Colt Stakes winners. He also bred Colt Stakes winners in Dunachton Nukes, Dunachton Dexter and Eye Emma Star.

The President’s View – Pat McHugh – President “We are pleased to see that our initiative of last summer has resulted in the establishment of a PEI Harness Racing Industry Association which will have representation from our Directors. Manager Norman Hall was part of the advisory committee that has drawn up the constitution and rules of operation. We have recommended to the new Association that an arrangement be made for centralizing the stakes payment process perhaps through Standardbred Canada and that we also wish to pass the responsibility for the sale to a consignor based group. This will reduce our administration efforts and costs greatly in light of the pending retirement of our manager Norman Hall.” Sale Highlights Sixty-two sold for an average of $4,810, the second best ever. Sale topper Thomas was bought by Greenoaks Farm for $22,000. Consigned by Riley Farms. Race Highlights Seawind Alpha, Pinch Of Nutmeg and Island Vanessa all broke the previous record for two-year-old pacing fillies with the latter two sharing the new record of 2:00.2 Balance Of Money set a new record for two-year-old trotters for owner John Ratchford. It was the fourth Colt stakes win in the week for driver Ken Arsenault after winning three the year before. Buddywhatshisname repeated as a Colt Stakes winner and took advantage of a fast track to break the three-year-old trot record Personalities Pat McHugh held the office of President of the PEI Colt Stakes in 1999-2001. Unlike most past Presidents he was not involved in breeding or owning race horses to any great degree but worked for Hollylaine Island Farms on a casual basis. A strong-minded individual, it was he who spurred on the process, while President, that resulted in the creation of the PEI Harness Racing Industry Association in 2000. It was at a meeting he chaired during Old Home Week in 1999, that the invited representatives of various tracks and stakes organizations first seriously considered the formation of a Maritime Industry group with three Provincial chapters. It was a turning point for the industry for Prince Edward Island and eventually the Maritimes generally

The President’s View – Pat McHugh – President “A number of significant changes have taken place this past year. These include a new stakes format that combines all Island stakes into an Island Breeders Series, stakes payments to be managed by Standardbred Canada, and an arrangement with the PEI Harness Racing Industry Association to conduct the yearling sale as The Atlantic Classic in 2002 are the most significant. As these changes take effect the role of the PEI Colt Stakes will change significantly and we must redefine our role for the future based on supporting the breeding industry and continuing to operate Colt Stakes racing under the new Island Breeders format. Sale Highlights Sixty yearlings sold for an average of $4,552. Sales topper Woodmere Fastcat was bought by Morah Kerr for $20,500. Consigned by Woodmere Farms. Race Highlights For the first year in a long time the weather cooperated and the resulting fast track produced three new stakes records. Firms Phantom led the speed parade with a 1:56.2 record against three-year-old colts as he became a repeat winner in the Colt Stakes. Rustico Ben broke the two-year-old trot record set the year before with a new standard of 2:03.3 for owner/breeder John Pineau. Le Win Skied became the first two-year-old filly to break 2:00 in the Colt Stakes. She was driven by Gilles Barrieau for owner/breeder Hugh Baird. Barrieau had three other winners during the week winning also with Eye Emma Star, Quick Flow and repeat winner Island Vanessa. Personalities Bill McNeill is the owner of Saulsbrook Farm, a standardbred nursery in Windsor, Nova Scotia, that has the honour of breeding the fastest two-year-old trotting colt in PEI Colt Stakes history by the name of Saulsbrook Balance. The colt, owned by Russell Newman of Cape Breton, and bought at the Atlantic Classic sale in 2006, set the record at 2:02.2. Bill and Joan McNeill and son Alan, are also the breeders of Saulsbrook Lighting, an Atlantic Sires trotting champion, and Saulsbrook, a Colt Stakes winner in 1991. Alan was also the buyer, and trainer as a yearling, of the great Lis Mara.

The President’s View – Blair Campbell – President “The Atlantic Classic sale went off quiet smoothly in its first year thanks to the support of Norman Hall and four of our directors who were involved in the Sale committee and the operation of the sale. A portion of the profits from the sale will be used to augment the purses for the Island Breeders Finals. The Island Breeders Series was also successful and the Finals well attended. Our purses for the PEI Colt Stakes set a new record with over $92,000, with the two filly divisions of the two-year-olds going for a record $9,100 each. For the second year in a row all the three-year-old colt pacing divisions went faster than 2:00. During the year a committee was set up to review our constitution in light of the changes to our organization. Race Highlights. Quick Flow was a repeat winner for driver Gilles Barrieau winning a three-year-old pacing division. Clinton Debriefed, who set a stakes record in a two-year-old pacing colt division saw it tied by West River Neldie and Clare MacDonald. Rustico Ben repeated as a Colt Stakes winner in a three-year-old trot contest for new owner Myron Ford and co-owner John Pineau. Royal Cane took one of the rich two-year-old filly races for owner David Ratchford who was winning his third consecutive Colt Stake trophy in three years. Pedro was a winner in the two-year-old trot giving driver Harold Shepherd, Owner Peter Buchanan and breeder George Boswall their first Colt Stakes wins. Personalities Blair Campbell served the Colt Stakes as a director for several years and as President in 2002-2003. He is a successful breeder with several stakes winners, with the farm prefix of Camco, such as PEI Colt stakes winners Camco Kyle who won twice, and Camco Lueann. He currently stands the Life Sign sire Signyourlifeaway. Blair is one of an active group of breeders and owners in the North Wiltshire area and currently serves on the PEI Harness Racing Industry Association board as well as being a director for the Maritime Breeders.

The President’s View – Blair Campbell – President “A new constitution was approved for the PEI Colt Stakes which reflects our current role of supporting the breeding industry through our Colt Stakes racing program. The past year has been one of adjustment as we continue to reduce our administrative requirements. The retirement of Norman Hall as manager and the reduction of the number of directors from nine to six will allow our organization to operate on a fully volunteer basis. I am pleased that Norman has decided to remain as a director and he will continue to oversee the operation of our stakes program for the foreseeable future. Our program has grown to one that provided over $235,000 in purses this past year and much of this growth has occurred during the past twenty years that Norman has been our manager”. Race Highlights. Maple Leaf Legacy and Dunmore Topaz brought owner/driver Ralph Annear back to the winners circle in the two and three-year-old trot respectively. his first wins since his double win in 1999. Lotta Speed, who set a stakes record in a two-year-old pacing division won the fastest of the three divisions for two-year-old pacing colts for breeder Roddy MacLeod. The other two divisions were taken by Mr Domi and Falstaff in an Island bred sweep. West River Ontop took a two-year-old filly division for Clare MacDonald who also took the lead in overall driver/owner/breeder wins in the Colt Stakes with the victory. Blu Meadow Sue was a repeat winner as were Mystery Balance and Clinton Debriefed. Personalities J Roderick “Roddy” MacLeod operates a farm in Hartsville where his small band of broodmares has produced stakes champions both trotting and pacing. He got his first broodmare in 1970 called Fluid Drive. He stood Sherwood Abe, Smooth George, and the trotting sires Hedgerow Hill and Balance Of Trade, the latter being the top trotting sire of winners in recent PEI Colt Stakes history. He bred the first sub 2:00 two-year-old in Stakes history in Acton’s Heritage as well as the double winner Lotta Speed, 2:00 filly Scarlet Hussy, and trot stake winners Mystery Balance and Kin O Classic among many other stakes performers. He has served as a Colt Stakes director several times.

The President’s View – John Clarey – President “Plans for our 70th anniversary were disrupted with the demolition of the grandstand due to Hurricane Juan although we did manage to hold a reception for directors, past and present, in the historic Judges Stand in center field during the Colt Stakes races. With a new agreement in place to cover racing at the Charlottetown track, and the proposed increase in purses from the revenues of the proposed racino, we can expect bigger and better days ahead for racing on PEI, including our Colt Stakes racing program. Nominations to the Colt Stakes have also increased by almost 20% since the joint nomination process was established through Standardbred Canada”. Race Highlights. Mr Domi repeated as a Colt Stakes winner as he won the fastest of four divisions of three-year-old pacing colts for Danny Romo and new owner Wayne Hill. Romo won another four stakes during the week, tying him for the record of five wins in any one year. Blu Meadow Tara won the fastest of four divisions of the three-year-old fillies with driver Danny Romo who also won two of the other filly divisions, another stakes record. Woodmere Sonicboom topped the two-year-old divisions with a 2:00 trip in less than ideal conditions. He was owned by the Downey Stables, now a five time stakes winning owner. Howmacs Dragon became the first non- Maritime sired filly to win a Colt Stakes race although she was foaled on PEI and met the Maritime foaled stake conditions. She was driven by Earl Smith for first time winning owner the Howmac Stable. Personalities Eldred Nicholson is like a lot of Island breeders in that he keeps two or three mares, but few can claim the kind of success he has had in producing a horse like Mr Domi and others with names tied to his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs. A Colt Stakes winner at two and three, he was a dominant horse in the Maritime stakes before going to Ontario. There he raced competitively and took a three-year-old record of 1:50.3, earning almost $250,000, and making him the fastest Maritime bred in history at the time. In addition to his breeding activities, Eldred is an active volunteer with several industry groups including the Atlantic Sires, the PEISHOA and the PEI Harness Racing Industry Association.

The President’s View – John Clarey – President “At the request of the PEI Department of Agriculture we have submitted a number of proposals for initiatives to assist the breeding sector of the harness racing industry. The proposals include incentives for Island bred horses, purchase of broodmares, education programs, research and infrastructure needs. The doubling of our Government support for purses resulted in a purse total for the PEI Colt Stakes over $100,000 for the first time Iin fact the purses rose to almost $120,000 and the total for the Island Breeders Series overall was close to $300,000. There was a record total of twenty divisions raced over three race dates”. Race Highlights. A welcome break from bad track conditions resulted in seven new stakes records including three in the three-year-old pacing filly divisions in consecutive races. Howmacs Dragon led the record parade in the three-year-old filly divisions with a 1:57.2 record after Muzzysaprilshowers and Incoming Storm both beat the previous record with identical times of 1:59.1. B G Bluefin broke the two-year-old filly record for Jason Hughes driving for the Bluefin Stable. Flaming Moe repeated as a Colt Stakes winner and smashed the three-year-old record in the process with a 1:55.2 time for driver Danny Romo just after P H Jimmy had set the record of 1:55.4 in another division. Elm Grove Action took almost a second off the two-year-old colt record for the first Colt Stakes winner bred by Elm Grove Farm. Personalities Elwood Lawton is the master of Southview Farms, a picturesque breeding and training operation overlooking Pownal Bay. In a few short years he has produced some very special stakes winners including the current two and three-year-old filly record holder, 1:58 at two and 1:56.2 at three, appropriately named Southview Special. It is only the second time in the history of the Colt Stakes that one horse has held two records at the same time. He is also the breeder of Maritime record holder Oceanview Kitty who set the two-year-old filly record of 1:57.1 in 2008. Elwood has been active in the industry as a director and Vice President of the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The President’s View – John Clarey – President “As a result of the new arrangement for stakes payments with Standardbred Canada we no longer have a way of collecting a membership fee and our membership has essentially ceased. This has created problems in sustaining interest in our annual meetings with only the directors and a handful of others attending. For the time being all persons nominating to the program are deemed to be members although no fee is required”. Race Highlights. Force Ore Finesse broke the two-year-old record with a 1:57.4 score for Phil Pinkney and breeder Donald Porter. Southview Special smashed the record for two-year-old fillies winning in 1:58 with Walter Cheverie driving for owner Elwood Lawton. Special Guest had earlier beaten the previous record also with a 1:59.2 score. All of the two-year-old colt and filly divisions were timed in 2:00 or better for the first time in Colt Stakes history. West River Quota set a new record for three- year-old fillies as Clare MacDonald drove to her second stakes record of the week this time with her own homebred.

Maple Leaf Noble dropped the three-year-old trot record by almost two seconds as he completed an unbeaten season for Ralph Annear with a repeat Colt Stakes win. Personalities Donald Porter has a long time reputation as a breeder of exceptional colts and fillies. Operating from his farm not far from Truro, he has produced several Maritime champions including his most recent in Deep Finesse, the top two-year-old pacing colt of 2008. He also bred the current PEI Colt Stakes two-year-old pacing colt record holder in Force Ore Finesse who won at two and at three.. That colt was from a mare he raised by his own stallion Waveore as was another top two-year-old in Dube Finesse. He also stood Sherwood Abe who was the sire of Escorts Abe, his first Colt Stakes winner as a breeder.

The President’s View – John Clarey – President “Changes to our stakes conditions last year included an increase in starting fees. This was expected to increase purses and perhaps result in fewer divisions. With twenty or more divisions it is becoming increasingly more difficult to accommodate the stakes along with the demand for overnight races as the horse population continues to grow. The number of divisions this past year dropped from twenty-three to twenty and the average purse per division increased accordingly with total purses of around $120,000 staying the same”. Race Highlights Force Ore Finesse repeated as a Colt Stakes winner taking a three-year-old division for Phil Pinkney. Southview Special added another stakes record to her resume, this time for three-year-old fillies, as she set a new record at 1:56.2 making her only the second double record holder in Colt Stakes history. Forceful Hope also beat the previous record with a mile of 1:57.1 for Marc Campbell. Saulsbrook Balance trotted the fastest ever for a two-year-old trotter in the Colt Stakes with a mile of 2:02.2 for owner Russell Newman and breeder Saulsbrook Farm. Scarlet Sensation won yet another stake for the father/son combination of Gordon and Darryl MacLean and it was a third generation stakes winner from their foundation mare Scarlet Dawn. Imps Finesse led the speed parade in the two-year-old pacing colt divisions as they all broke 2:00 for the second year in a row. Personalities Gordon Maclean and son Darryl form a father and son combination to contend with in PEI Colt Stakes action. Gordon got his first breeder/owner/driver win in 1982 with Scarlet Victory and since then he has claimed eleven more victories with nine of them driven by son Darryl. They took the Colt Stakes record for three-year-old trotters with Scarlet Nite in 1988. Another son, Todd, won a four-year-old Colt Stakes event with Scarlet Eve to set yet another record, this time for family performance. Their foundation mare Scarlet Dawn produced a record four Colt Stakes winners and they in turn have produced three more. A fourth generation colt was stakes placed in 2008.

The President’s View – John Clarey – President “Purses for the PEI Colt Stakes jumped to $139,600 with a record number of twenty-four divisions. Although there were no individual stakes records set, the pacing divisions saw fourteen of the twenty races timed in 2:00 or better, a first for the Colt Stakes. Plans are under way for our 75th Anniversary in 2009 and a committee of over twenty volunteers is involved in the planning chaired by Norman Hall”. Race Highlights Deep Finesse continued his long win streak with a dominant win in a two-year-old colt division for driver and owner Phil Pinkney. Island Quick Cash gave Walter Simmons another Colt Stakes victory fifty-two years after his first victory in 1956. The filly was bred by Hollylaine Island Farms, and they also produced two other winners this year in Island Idol and Island Jazzystar.

Saulsbrook Balance repeated as a Colt Stakes winner by winning the three-year-old trot

Darko, Saulsbrook Balance, Ricarras Sun, and Firedance Ridge gave Ken Arsenault four winners on the week boosting him in to fifth place in driver wins behind Clair MacDonald, Earl Smith, Danny Romo and Gilles Barrieau. Personalities Phil Pinkney, one of the top trainers of young horses in the Maritimes, won his first PEI Colt Stakes in 1975 with Glowing Wayvue. Four years later he was back setting a Stakes record with Ego Trip, a colt he had bought in the first PEI yearling sale. He would return to the same venue to purchase Whos To Care and Whos To Bless, both Colt Stakes winners. In total he has won fifteen Colt Stakes races as a driver and five as an owner including his most recent victory in 2008 with the Maritimes top two-year-old pacing colt, Deep Finesse, and with the three-year-old colt Absolom. He also has set five stakes records over his thirty-four years of racing in the PEI Colt Stakes.

RAISE A COLT

2009

75th Anniversary of Colt Stakes racing on Prince Edward Island We welcome all past participants in the Island Colt Stakes to join us for our 75th Anniversary. The Anniversary committee has organized a program of activities, which will make this a very special year in our history. On May 15th, the date in 1934 of the first meeting of the PEI Harness Racing Club, we will hold a fund raising dinner in Summerside to commemorate that event. The dinner will include a stallion fee auction and a silent auction. Proceeds from the auctions will be split between the Anniversary committee and the Island Matinee Track program that supports the summer camp activities for children. These camps provide an opportunity for children to learn about harness racing and how to handle the wonderful horses that our sport depends upon. We hope, also, to provide support for other programs that involve retired standardbreds such as equine programs for children with disabilities and troubled youth. During the summer we will sponsor a series of races at the matinee tracks for young horses that are non-winners of a parimutuel race. The Goodwill Racing Series will visit seven tracks and hold a final event at the CDPEC on the Sunday afternoon of Colt Stakes weekend. A special anniversary project is the publication of this book, which has been compiled by our longtime manager and director, Norman Hall. This book, and the historical exhibit that will travel to the matinee tracks and finally be dedicated as a permanent exhibit at the CDPEC, would never have been completed without his participation. Our Colt Stakes races this year will go for the highest purses in our history and will feature sponsored awards for all races as well as for the breeders of the winners. They will also feature a return of the four-year-old races on the Sunday afternoon when we will host a special family program in matinee style. The Presidents’ Brunch to be held on Sunday, September 20th, will be the grand finale to our Anniversary year and will be held on the same date, September 20th., that our very first race program was contested at the Charlottetown Driving Park. This event will feature awards to honour the persons and horses that have a special place in our history and will be preceded on Thursday evening with the dedication of a permanent historical exhibit at the CDPEC. The Past Presidents committee has been charged with drawing up the list of award winners.

I want to thank all of the volunteers and sponsors who have made our Anniversary possible and special. John Clarey, President
