history of phoenix
“Wealth, political power and property was controlled by a dominating social class causing the east-west line of the railroad to act as an impermeable residential barrier for the poor neighborhoods of south phoenix.
Therefore, the city’s storm water drains, first constructed in 1890, directed runoff and untreated sewage of Anglo neighborhoods into the minority neighborhoods of South Phoenix further causing a social barrier.
The warehouse district is located on this east-west border and is composed of many vacant lots.

We predict as the downtown infills, it will expand south to

project statement
Rail(ed) is a multi-dimensional redesign of the Warehouse District in Downtown Phoenix that aims to revitalize the area’s architecture and economy by filling in empty lots and renovating the existing structures. The design emphasizes the existing railroad, which becomes a keystone for the design and development of the project. The proposal will serve as a catalyst for future expansion along nearby streets that run north and south in hopes of creating a connection between various socio-cultural communities and will bridge the social barrier between the two regions. Rail(ed) utilizes extensive plantings, follies, and exquisite materials, both in the architecture and the landscape to ultimately re-imagine what is possible in the Warehouse District of Downtown Phoenix.

concept
Viewing the train as a river, downtown phoenix begins to evolve as
past and future sediments bind together along the historic railroad.
