SCHOOL CLOSINGS AND RAIDER ALERTS/SCHOOL BEACON:
During the winter weather season, parents are reminded of the various media location
used for announcing school closing decisions. This information will be reprinted
monthly during the inclement weather season. As a matter of practicality, the first me-
dia source notified with be the district website followed by the Bank of Mead number
followed by the School Beacon/Raider Alerts. Remaining media sources will be con-
tacted as soon as possible. There have been several changes to the Raider Alerts pro-
gram which is now called the School Beacon and is sponsored by the Bank of Mead.
The program is a notification system the school uses to notify patrons of school clos-
ings, early dismissals, cancellations and other needed alerts.
You can choose to receive a text message to your cell phone or an email message. The
company has indicated that there have been many improvements from last year’s sys-
tem. You may receive notification from School Beacon asking you to verify and/or up-
date your contact information if you have previously subscribed to the service. You can
sign up for notification by clicking the School Beacon link at the school district website
at http://www.meadpublicschools.org/
If you were previously signed up last year, you should log onto the site above and
review your information to verify its accuracy and select which notifications you wish to receive. Your user name is your email address and whatever password you
used to sign up for the original service. If you forgot your password, click on the Forgot
Password link and they will send you a temporary password that you can change when
you log onto the site.
In addition to advertising school closings through the School Beacon, cancellation no-
tices will also be disseminated through the following media sources:
Bank of Mead – 624-2203. The automated answering service at the bank will be up-
dated to provide weather related cancelations and closings.

Elementary Citizenship for November
On cold, snowy days, I often go to the elementary to make sure students can get in the building, and I am often surprised at how under dressed many seem for the cold weather. I suspect it is because they think they will be out in the cold for just a few minutes, but that is not always the case. Elementary students usually enter the building at 8:10. Some students are present much earlier than
8:10 and can wait 10-20 minutes outside before entering the building.
We do have guidelines about bringing students in the building earlier. For instance, if the tem-perature is below freezing, the wind chill is severe, or it is raining or snowing, students enter the building and sit on the steps in front of the gym until teachers begin morning duty at 7:55, at which point students
move to the gym.
An option for students who arrive early is to sign up and eat breakfast in the High School Com-mons. Breakfast is served from approximately 7:40-8:05 for elementary students, but some arrive for breakfast just after 7:30. Elementary students that eat breakfast are then bussed over to the elementary
at 8:05.
(Continued on page 3)
From the Principal: Dress for the Cold
Newsletter Title Page 3
Another reason to dress warmly is that students still walk to lunch unless the temperature or wind chill is severe. On days that the temperature or wind chill is around 20 degrees or it is snowing, students are bussed to lunch, but they must still walk to and from the bus at each building, and the bus isn’t al-ways that warm for the earliest groups. Lunch recess follows similar guidelines, so students need appro-priate winter clothing. When snow covers the playground, students stay on the black top unless they
have snow boots, winter coats, hats and gloves.

Mrs. Bladt’s Kindergarten class celebrated Thanksgiving and had their feast on November 22nd.
They enjoyed turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, bread, and Mrs. Carlson’s pumpkin bars!

Fruit FunFruit FunFruit FunFruit Fun By Thomas Dux
On October 28th, students of the Plant Science course carved a Jack-O-Lantern for a fruit dissection Laboratory. Students learned about the different types of fruits (Pomes and Drupes) and what the different characteristics of each are. Students then were able to cor-rectly identify some different types of fruits including a Pumpkin. Students were able to have a hands-on look at the inside of a Pome fruit (a Pumpkin). This Laboratory was a fun way to look at fruits and fit perfectly into the time of year.

Take some time to enjoy your family, even in the midst of all the hustle and bustle. Make an effort to reach out to those around you who may be less fortu-nate. Helping someone else is a great example for your children. In fact, helping others and speaking up on behalf of others is so important it made the list of the Forty Developmental As-sets. Dear Water / Sewer Subscribers:
The Village of Mead Board of Trustees is proposing the following increase in water and sewer rates. As you may be aware, the village has undertaken a Water Study and Wastewater Study through the use of CDBG funding. Results of the studies will be presented to the public in the near future as to future infrastructure improvements. As reported by our accountant on the Financial Report approved for fiscal year October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011, we have a $20,000.00 loss in water / sewer for the year. Water and sewer have shown losses for several years due to rates not supporting expenses in these funds.
CURRENT RATES:
Water – 5/8” – ¾” meter $12.00 per month
1” meter single dwelling $12.00 per month
1” meter multi-family dwelling $22.00 per month
1 ½” or larger meter $42.00 per month
For all use of water, all water consumers shall pay a metered rate of $1.25 per thousand gallons.
Sewer – 5/8” – ¾” meter $16.00 per month
1” meter $26.00 per month
1 ½” or larger meter $46.00 per month
Volume rate charge: $.75 per 1,000-gallons/per month based on previous month’s average of December, January and Feb-ruary, effective annually on April 1.
PROPOSED RATES:
Water – 5/8” – ¾” meter $20.00 per month resident
$30.00 per month non-resident
1” meter single dwelling $20.00 per month resident
$30.00 per month non-resident
1” meter multi-family dwelling $30.00 per month resident
$45.00 per month non-resident
1 ½” or larger meter $50.00 per month resident
$75.00 per month non-resident
For all use of water, all water consumers shall pay a metered rate of $1.75 per thousand gallons.
Sewer – 5/8” – ¾” meter $20.00 per month resident
$30.00 per month non-resident
