A note from our director........Welcome to Ragtime, the initial show of our first two-show season at Fairfield Summer Theatre! After fifteen summers of producing one large-scale musical, it was time to in-crease opportunity for our talented artists, and to create another cultural outlet for our com-munity. So, in addition to this performance of the Tony Award-winning musical, Ragtime, next weekend we present another Tony Award-winning musical, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.

One of the many benefits of doing theatre in the summer is that many local college students studying Theatre, Music and Design are looking for ways to showcase their skills or find a rewarding theatrical experience. We are pleased to say that this summer alone, students studying their craft at CCM, Wright State, Ball State, Indiana University, Miami University, Kent State and many others are participating in our summer season. We hope to con-tinue to foster great relationships with our local college artists, and also with our talented professional, high school and community artists, who are also gracing our stages this summer.

Ragtime is a story about America at the turn of the twentieth cen-tury - a time when immigrants, mostly from Eastern and Southern Europe, were pouring through Ellis Island by the millions. At that time, becoming an American took three to four hours of questioning and a medical examination. The wheels of change were spinning. The new cultural landscape was echoed in ragtime, a true melting pot of musical styles. But to many, the wheels of change were spin-ning far too quickly. And perhaps they still are. Today, becoming a naturalized citizen can take a decade or more and our “immigration crisis” is still a regular topic of debate.

Thank you for your patronage of Fairfield Summer Theatre. We hope you enjoy the show!
