The Somervell family must have had a ball growing up on a
Hawkes Bay dairy farm. Three books have already been written about their adventures and there are many more to come.
Sisters Jennifer Somervell and Raglan-based Margery Fern launched their latest children’s book, The Eel Hunt, on Saturday at the Old School Arts Centre surrounded by friends, fans and family.
The book is based on their childhood memories in the 1970s’ of catching eels in the stream on their farm. It's written by Jenny, who lives in Canterbury, illustrated by Margery and put together by Margery’s daughter, Ezra Andre.
On Saturday the Somervell family came from far and wide to celebrate the new book and to recount their own hilarious memories about making homemade spears and going eeling at night with some of their eight siblings.
Jenny was not part of the eeling adventures but had heard the story at a family reunion: “It sounded like fiction that’s not fiction – it had lots of funny bits”.
Margery’s clear memories of eeling inspired her illustrations. She particularly remembered one time when she was sick and not allowed to get in the water, standing on the bank above: “I had this picture imprinted in my head because looking down, I could see all the antics”.
“I can’t wait to see the response from the kids,” said Jenny, who tackled the tricky art of rhyming verse in the book.
The book would be out in bookshops this week. Three hundred copies from their initial print run of 2000 had already been sold before the launch.
“We feel like we‘re becoming credible and recognised and bookshop owners are realising that our books will sell,” Jenny said.
It is the third book to emerge from their Tales From the Farm Publications. The Day Dad Blew Up the Cowshed and The New Old Truck, which won
first prize in the coveted US Purple Dragonfly Book Awards earlier this year, were also selling well.
Margery, deputy principal of Waitetuna School, said a strength of their books was the educational sections at the back, and the sisters were putting more and more energy into this.
In The Eel Hunt, the educational section in the book talked about the plight of New Zealand’s endangered long fin eel and its life cycle, in which the female only bred once at the age of 20 or 30 years and then died.
And the next tale from the farm?Jenny was keen to do a series about
her beloved pigs. She had bred pigs for years and had a bit of a “fetish” for them. She saw the books as an opportunity to educate children about how piglets were born, how their instincts kicked in and how Nature worked.
Children were interested in animals and, with all the publicity on television about pig farming, it was also an opportunity to talk about how inappropriate it was to keep pigs in crates.
“I think if you talk about it, then that’s what we’ll have to do next,” joked Margery to her sister.

A game of soccer in Raglan this Saturday will be
more than just a game. It will be a whole celebration
of soccer to highlight the upcoming FIFA Under-20 World Cup New Zealand 2015.
It would be the first time that New Zealand would host the U-20 World Cup, which was the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA)’s second biggest international tournament and expected to be watched by more than 170 million people around the world.
“It’s quite a big deal really,” said James Bannatyne, sales and marketing manager for Hamilton FIFA U-20 World Cup NZ 2015.
To celebrate and publicise this event at a regional level, an invitational Under- and Over-20 FIFA side would play the Raglan Roosters at Te Kopua Domain soccer grounds this Saturday, starting at 2.30pm.
“We’re fortunate to have it [U-20 World Cup] in New Zealand and we want to get Waikato people behind it and understand the significance of it,” James said.
The invitational team would include some former All Whites and some well-known figures, such as Sport Waikato CEO Matt Cooper and Hamilton East MP David Bennett.
The event was aimed at families, with Raglan junior soccer players invited to have a kick around before the invitational game and an inflatable kick wall set up for people to have a go, he said.
For next year’s U-20 World Cup, seven of the matches
would be held in Hamilton between May 31 and June 11, coinciding with the 2015 Fieldays, and culminating with
a quarter-final game on June 14.
The tournament was held every two years and next year
would bring 24 teams to play 52 games in seven different venues around New Zealand.

Raglan Area School deputy principal and youth crusader Bronwyn Haitana wants Raglan to give youth a chance.
The call is going out to adults in the community to help empower Raglan teenagers
and help them find their place in the town.
Raglan’s Give Youth a Chance
initiative, spearheaded by Raglan Area School (RAS) deputy principal Bronwyn Haitana, was about encouraging good leadership and positive choices by young people and was just one part of a multi-faceted youth support strategy.

“This is what the youth is asking for - it’s not what we [the adults] are deciding,” she said.
Included in that were plans for a Raglan youth hub, which would soon be piloted on Thursday afternoons – a time when large groups of young people were in town waiting for the start of the Surfside youth group in Te Uku at 7pm.
At the moment Raglan youth felt they had nowhere to go and often felt unwelcome around town, Bronwyn said.
About 14 local businesses had also become involved by giving work experience to some of the local students.
“We’re really proud of that – its great they’re helping us,” she said.
Since last year Waikato had been involved in the Social Sector Trials, in which the Ministries of Education, Health, Justice and Social Development and the New Zealand Police were working together to change the way social services were delivered.
Youth offending and educational achievement statistics had identified Raglan, Ngaruwahia, Te Kauwhata and Huntly as places that needed help with youth issues.
As a result, a lot of people in those towns had started talking about how to help youth but Raglan had taken a different approach, she said.
Bronwyn, former national manager for youth development and youth education at Police National Headquarters, knew that any initiatives had to be youth-led to be successful, whereby youth were not seen as the problem but as part of the solution.
Working with others in the community, they started by looking at how to increase youth and community leadership, increase participation in education, employment and training, and improve collaboration, coordination and communication.
A youth-led Youth Action Committee was in the process of being formed, funded by the Ministry of Social Development.
Year 13 RAS students Keni Paekau and Kaleb Kingi, who were nominated by their peers, would be the driving force behind it.
Now working as student leaders and mentors, the two would be the face of the Give Youth a Chance campaign. Some Year 12 students would also be developed as future leaders/mentors so the initiative had sustainabilty.
Keni and Kaleb were hoping to find some trusted adults who could work with them on the committee by the end of November.
These adults were also needed to make a youth ‘hub’ work. If successful, the committee could open the hub a couple of times a week. “It’s really exciting,” Bronwyn said.
The Raglan Coastguard had already offered a spare shed as a venue, where young people could have something to eat, relax, listen to music and have other positive things to do.
A survey of 12-25-year-olds from Raglan identified the issues for young people here, including the need for a youth hub.
Bronwyn said the survey found that those who attended Hamilton schools felt more connected with the city and did not have any particular issues with Raglan.
But the story was different for those who went to school locally: “They didn’t feel that sense of belonging in Raglan. They felt like the town was set up for tourists,” she said.

November 12, 1-3pm. Supper Room at the Town Hall.: Kaleb and Keni talk about the initiatives they are leading for the young people of Raglan.

Thinking Green: See Kirsty and the team at the Herbal Dispensary
• Do you believe that our youth should have a voice within our community?• Are you passionate about youth affairs and issues?• Do you value the importance of developing open and caring relationships with our youth?
If you have answered ‘yes’ to one or more of these points then this is an opportunity you won’t want to miss.
Innovative youth led “Youth Action Committee”
We are currently seeking forward thinking and dynamic volunteers to become a part of our innovative youth led “Youth Action Committee (YAC)”. These volunteers will take on the role of advice and guidance to support our youth leaders in providing a range of activities and services that will give our young people more of an active role and a voice within our community. Advantages for the community: The Youth Action Committee can help change public perception of young people from being "the problem" to an important part of making life better in the community.
• Involving young people in the community helps them see themselves as part of the whole; they really do become less likely to cause problems and more likely to want to look for solutions.
• By involving young people, the community is allowing them to carefully develop their leadership potential, so that as they grow and learn they can become thoughtful, prepared leaders of the society.
Whaingaroa Youth Leaders:
Please write a short covering letter explaining why you would like to be part of the youth committee and email it by November 21st 2014 to [email protected] or post to Kaleb and Keni,

My name is Kaleb, I come from Otorohanga, but I have lived in Raglan for most of my life. The reason for becoming a Youth Leader is because I I believe that I am a positive role model and can be the connection between our community and youth. My goal is to help our youth to gain confidence by opening the doors to possibilities. One way will be by giving the youth opportunities they need to contribute positively to our future. Kia ora, My name is Keni Paekau and I was born and bred here in Whaingaroa. The reason for becoming a Youth Leader is because I believe that our youth should have and deserve a strong voice within society. It is my goal to help break down the walls that divide the youth from our community. One way in which we will begin to achieve this goal is that our ‘Youth Team” will provide a place within the community where the youth can go and feel that they belong and are accepted.

Please write a short covering letter explaining why you would like to be part of the youth committee and email it by November 21st 2014 to [email protected] or post to Kaleb and Keni,
Raglan Area School, 42 Norrie Avenue, Raglan, 3225
Innovative youth led “Youth Action Committee”
• Do you believe that our youth should have a voice within our community?
• Are you passionate about youth affairs and issues? • Do you value the importance of developing open and caring relationships
with our youth?
If you have answered ‘yes’ to one or more of these points then this is an opportunity you won’t want to miss.

We are well into the middle of spring now and fast
approaching summer and the start of the ‘silly season’, a time when we are constantly exposed to all types of tempting food and drink options.
Take the opportunity now before the silly season kicks in to give your body and liver a cleanse.
• Think green: pack your diet full of the variety of fresh greens that are available. The chlorophyll molecule which gives green them their green colour is a powerful blood cleanser. Opt for a mixture of leaves to create different tastes and textures. New leaves contain a lot of energy as they sprout and grow quickly upward at this time of year; therefore this is the energy that is given to us after consumption.
• Add green superfoods into your diet- Spirilina is high in protein, chlorella
is a strong blood cleanser, barley grass is alkalising and wheat grass is good for bowel health. Perfect to add to any smoothie or juice.
• Take Milk Thistle, the queen of liver herbs. It has liver protecting and regenerating properties. It can be taken as a tonic, in tablets or as a tea.
• Consumer bitter foods such as watercress, rocket and add apple cider vinegar to your dressings. The bitter taste stimulates digestion, allowing your food to be absorbed and assimilated by the body easier.
• Eat lots of beetroot and carrot. Both are powerful liver vegetables. Try grated beetroot and carrot salads or the liver lover juice.
• Grow some cooking herbs such as parsley, coriander and basil. Parsley is high in minerals, and basil and coriander give any dish a tasty zing.

Surfing Academy student picks up award
For Raglan Surf Academy students Indica (Indy) Ratima and Callum
Chuter surfing is their passion. When they heard that they had been both
nominated for the Waikato Secondary Schools (WSS) Sports Awards Surfing Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year they were shocked.
“It was really weird,” Callum said of the nomination.
Surf Academy form teacher Larry Fisher said that the Surf Academy, which is based at Raglan Area School and oversees the education of year-11 to 13 students (aged 15-17 years) who exhibit a passion and talent for surfing, was contacted by the Raglan Area School sports coordinator for possible candidates.
The WSS Sports Awards recognises the achievements of secondary students in their field of sport
“They were nominated because of their achievements in surfing,” said Larry.
Both Indy and Callum have surfed
competitively in national competitions including Indy having placed in the Under 20 Girls Finals in the Backdoor GromBash 2014 surfing comp held at Raglan and, for Callum, a third placing in last month’s National Scholastic Surfing Championship in Taranaki.
Both Indy and Callum attended the ceremony, held in Hamilton on Sunday, which saw Indy win the WSS Sports Awards Surfing Sportswoman of the year.
However, Indy left before she could receive her award.
“I got really nervous,” Indy said.Despite the nerves, Indy said she felt
“privileged” to have won such an accolade for something that was “definitely what I love to do.”
Although Callum did not receive an award, he has been nominated for the Sport Waikato 2014 District Sports Awards Junior Sports Person of the Year along with classmate Naumai Kereopa-Lloyd, for her achievements in netball, to be held later this month.

Award winner Indy Ratima, with fellow WSS Awards finalist Callum Chuter. Both received recognition for their surfing achievements.

Gardening Column: Putting down roots
It is ‘good to go’ in our gardens right now.
Every plant and seed is in germination or growing mode. These winds do dry our garden soil somewhat but that rain was a huge blessing. The difference could be seen in days.
Look at the lawns you just finish mowing and in days they need to be cut again. The c o m p e t i t i o n (weeds) need to be taken out before they get e s t a b l i s h e d . This gives all plants an even chance.
Silver beet is now bolting, either pick it hard before it bolts, or replace with young plants. And at long last heaps of young broad beans are ready, along with freshly dug potatoes.
Slugs, snails and slaters will now need to be controlled.
Bec’s at Sayers Landscapes has bulk mushroom compost, which is hard to get in the Waikato. A trailer load mixed with a scoop of their filtered topsoil is perfect for overlaying an existing garden or to start a garden. This mix will grow all. They also have large rolls of fine mesh to put over frames to keep the white butterfly and
aphids away. Lastly all remaining fruit trees are discounted, and great buying.
So really, all can be planted now, including pumpkins, butternuts, cucumbers, gherkins, tomatoes, capsicums, beans, plus further plantings of lettuce, silver beet, spinach and rocket. Good time to also plant flowers including portulacas, salvias,
p e t u n i a s , lobelias and asters. These will all fly and give lots of colour to your property in a few weeks.
Take real care while spraying at this moment, as most apple
trees are now in full blossom. Roses have much soft growth and young tomatoes plants absolutely hate spray, and with these winds drift can seriously harm other people’s plants. Be careful.
Mulching is now important for all gardens and plants for weed control and moisture retention.
Kids Giveaway: Tomato plants. These are full of antioxidants, even more so in the darker varieties. Many varieties to choose from, just stake, give them sunlight, moisture and they are away. The Chronicle invites you to pick your tomato plants up from their office.

Recycling leader launches new website
Snapper of size are being caught at the60m mark, due west of the bar and at the same depth out of Kawhia.
We have tried closer in, but other than a number of nice gurnard and kahawai, the snapper were just not there.
Water temperature is 15.5. We are also getting in the mix at 60m gurnard,
kahawai, spiny dogs and school shark. Fresh baits and quality hooks and you are
guaranteed a feed. Pesky strong westerlies and high swell size has
made it hard to choose your fishing days over the bar. Manu Bay has been too rough on the ramp due to sea/wind/tidal condition.
Whitebait: it is probably one of our best seasons for many years. Port Waikato has such abundance that the buyers are offering real low prices per kilo of fish. I recently had a feed of local
harbour mussels and found them in good size and great condition. It was what the grandchildren wanted to do, cooking them up on a gas ring in seawater. We went back the next day for more.
Flounder are pretty scarce at present, I saw just a few on the light a few nights ago, and got none. Netting up the harbour was not much better. However there are plenty of dog fish in our harbour, just watch your net mesh size when taking these.
There are plenty of mullet at the top of the tide - in the rushes and stream mouths.
The Fish City Family Fishing Tournament is on the 21st-23rd November. The Ecolab Fishing Competition on the Thursday 4th December.
Top Catch Icebreaker Tournament is the 21st and 22nd November.
The Raglan Harbour entrance is on the leads and all harbour navigation lights are in order.
See you out there, play it safe and enjoy the west coast fishing because it is special.
We are very excited to announce the launch of our new website - www.
xtemezerowaste.org.nz. It’s fun and easy to find your way around,
whether you are a household, business owner, local, visitor or teacher. The new website features comprehensive information on Xtreme Zero Waste and the Raglan Recycling Centre.
What day is my kerbside recycling collected? What can be recycled on the business run? What topics are covered on site tours? What can I drop off at the Raglan Recycling
Centre? All these questions and many more are
answered through our website. The purpose of this new website is to
communicate clearly with our community
about reducing, reusing and recycling, so that we move closer to the goal of zero waste for our Raglan community. With the community getting behind events like Plastic Free July and Sustainable September, it’s clear together we can turn Raglan’s waste into resources, creating a resource rich community and do our part in preserving the natural environment of Whaingaroa.
So visit our website, like our facebook page and check our blog for regular updates. Feel free to get in touch with feedback, or if there is a subject you would like to see more information on. This resource will be growing and added to each week. Have fun searching!
Forward to zero waste … Xtreme Zero Waste Team
For so long I had been preparing to leave for New Zealand. Notwithstanding the packing, the selling, the bending, the lifting, the giveaways, the storing, and the actual moving, there was the action of saying goodbye to family, friends, pets, and all things familiar. Over that time nearly every single person, both strangers and friends, either had always wanted to see New Zealand, or promised to come and visit. The point? Years later, one friend has been to see me, and it happened completely randomly. She informed me she was coming and was October good?! I’ve loved her for over 20 years, and her brusque ways have always infuriated me and had me admire her. I’ve never been accused of being subtle, but she makes me look like a pot of honey. And it was effortless as we found our grooves of friendship again, and I began to remember what deep, unconditional, friendship feels like.
I was welcomed here by fire, passion, lust,
danger, fear, and destiny. Budding friendships built and shattered in short time. Finding my footing and following my heart was not forthcoming. However, I ultimately landed and began to prosper. But deep friendship? That is what I miss most in my current journey: the option to call a buddy, meet for a beer, and talk. And talk safely, with trust, and love. Even though I was nervous beforehand, this past week with her gave me everything I’ve been longing for in the re-building of a life. To be known in the history of my life. Where I’ve come from and how I’ve grown can only be witnessed in the longevity of relationship. And so we met every evening out on the deck for our time; after the day closes and everyone has gone to sleep. We drank, we laughed, we cried, and on occasion, we shared a cigarette in the crisp, ocean air of the night. And I remembered what it felt like to disappear into the privacy of a sacred love and friendship. Ezekiel Jacob

Raglan Youth Action Meeting
Wednesday 12th November 1pm – 3pm
Our Whaingaroa Youth Leaders, Kaleb and Keni would like to invite you to a Raglan community meeting to share with you the initiatives they are leading for the young people of Whaingaroa/Raglan. The purpose of the meeting is to:
• celebrate the successes that youth have already done this year in Raglan • outline what the Social Sector Trials mean for Raglan youth and our community • share the youth survey • help change public perception of young people from being "the problem" to an
important part of making life better in the community • generate positive ideas in regard to involving young people in the community so that
they see themselves as part of the whole; they really do become less likely to cause problems and more likely to want to look for solutions.

Hey Raglan! There’s some confusion about the inorganic refuse collection in your community. In the latest Link,
we told you the inorganic refuse collection service is only available for
households in the Waikato district which have a weekly kerbside refuse and recycling collection. The cost of this annual service is included in the rates for the relevant areas and that
doesn’t include Raglan.
If you live in Raglan you can take your inorganic items to the Raglan Recycling and Transfer Station on
Te Hutewai Road. However there is a fee to use this service. For more
information visit their website http://xtremezerowaste.org.nz/sample-

Thanks to everyone who has been sharing the message about using
Xtreme Waste and the great service they provide.
