To the Editor,Last week I sent a letter thanking all

those who participated in, and helped with, the ANZAC Day celebrations coordinated by the Raglan RSA. It is with considerable embarrassment and deep regret that I overlooked thanking the Raglan Community Board for their sponsorship and support of the commemorations. Simply, if it were not for the Raglan Community Board funding, the RSA would not have been able to stage this event in the way that it was presented.

Given the Raglan Community Board has also assisted in funding the RSA's artifact cataloguing project, the oversight is doubly embarrassing.

The Raglan RSA is extremely grateful for the positive support that has alway been provided by Rodger Gallagher and the Community Board and I offer my belated thanks on behalf of the Raglan RSA for this support.

There are no words on this earth to describe your total lack of intelligence. Do yourself a big favour and get your eyes tested and hand in your drivers licence. Ive met a few idiots over the years in Raglan but you may have just won the ultimate award.

Disability Action here in the Waikato and I have been working closely with a whanau in Raglan. I support Gypsy-Rose, a gorgeous little girl that has Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy. Gypsy-Rose has three brothers that are at school and their mum Sally is a real trooper. A Computer is something the family could only ever dream of, but the Computers Against Isolation Trust has donated them one. The Trust is a charitable organization that is able to supply ex-lease computers to people with disabilities through the efforts of sponsors, business’ and organisations. The computer will support Gypsy-Rose’s development and therapy - a boon for a little girl that is often unwell. Wild weather no picnic for Raglan

Lorenzen Bay was more than a few sandwiches short of a picnic early this week – there was also no picnic table or rubbish bin for the crusts. Or none at least that you could get to without a decent pair of waders.

It was only a 2.7 metre high tide on Monday morning but that combined with the wild weather and strong winds was enough to flood the pocket-sized recreation area and some low-lying beachfront sections nearby.

A handful of properties also looked accessible only by 4WD, which may have given the odd local a good excuse for being late for work or the first day back at school.

Elsewhere in Raglan there was some localised flooding and debris strewn across roads. In some areas – such as at the Wainui Road-Stewart Street intersection – flash flooding receded almost as quickly as it came but in traditional problem spots like near the far end of Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive the flooding disrupted access for several hours.

Flocks of seagulls were in their element in an area of ponding near the Kopua boat ramp but around the corner near the one-way traffic bridge a load of rubbish obviously blown off a truck or trailer made for a less attractive sight.

Our own Aaron Brunet has made it into the the top five of Masterchef New Zealand.

In this weeks show the Top Six contestants faced a barbeque and wine matching challenge at the Wither Hills vineyard in Marlborough.

The judges were quick to point out to Aaron at the beginning of this weeks Masterchef that he had been off his game lately. Aaron acknowledged that he had been but commented that he felt "much more on centre this week".

Once again our local contender delivered one of the top dishes of the day 'Cumin rubbed butterfish on clam panzanella with green vegetables' paired with the chardonnay. "This chardonnay is absolutely superb and he's done a dish that is as superb and the two of them are singing together....perfect." said Simon.

"The old Aaron is back" the judges told him. "it's nice to have you back and back with avengence. You nailed it".

S u s h i l R a v i k u m a r became the e l e v e n t h c o n t e s t a n t from the Top 16 to leave MasterChef . It was an e m o t i o n a l goodbye from Aaron and his fellow remaining contestants.

MasterChef New Zealand continues Sundays at 7.30pm on TV ONE. At stake for the remaining contestants is the MasterChef New Zealand title and more than $100,000 worth of prizes.

The remaining contestants are: Aaron Brunet (Raglan); Ella Krauts (Christchurch); Kelly Kaihea (Auckland); Paula Saengthian-Ngam (Nelson); Vanessa Baxter (Auckland).

Imagine painting the town pink – and you’ll get an idea of how things might look come Friday week when Pink Shirt Day gets its first airing in Raglan.

That’s when staff and students from Raglan Area School, sporting all things pink – and not just shirts – will march at noon along Norrie Avenue, down Stewart Street, into Wainui Road and on to Bow Street which will be closed to through-traffic.

It’s part of a national and international movement against bullying which started in Nova Scotia, Canada, when a male ninth-grade student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school.

“And we want to deliver a big anti-bullying message here (in town),” says Chrissy Hodkinson of Raglan Community House. “We need everyone in our community to get behind this initiative.”

She’s encouraging locals to join the march along the way and Raglan businesses to create pink window displays in support of the movement.

Hamilton Party Hire have donated 200 pink balloons to get things going in town, says Chrissy, and she’s hopeful of some cash from the local

out on bullyingsupermarket’s monthly community fund for a sausage sizzle near the community house and town hall where the march will end.

“All our local schools have been invited to participate,” adds Chrissy, who’s totting up just how many sausages need to be ordered for the event.

While the initiative began locally with the area school through its new deputy principal Bronwyn Haitana – who recently joined the local Community Violence Prevention and Awareness group formed late last year – Chrissy picked up on the idea, which is being funded by Social Workers in Schools, as a whole-community event.

“We want to deliver a strong message in town that we don’t want violence of any kind,” she says. That includes everything from family violence to bullying, either upfront or by text or email. The aim is to “celebrate diversity” and “create an

environment where all people feel safe, valued and respected”.

Pink Shirt Day will help raise awareness and “connect” our community, Chrissy believes. “We need to look after each other and our kids.”

Chrissy’s on the lookout now for some pink hairspray to get herself into the swing of things, but encourages people to wear or carry anything pink at all – maybe even right down to their shoelaces – to make an impact.

And Poihakena Marae has got some shocking pink t-shirts lined up, she told the Chronicle.

With the current media focus on how to combat bullying, organisers are hoping mainstream television and newspapers as well as Maori TV will give some coverage to the march.

Ducky gets a pet piece of paradise

You could be excused for thinking a Raglan couple have gone a little quackers over their pet duck – they’ve not only moved house for its sake but also built a huge cage enclosing their entire backyard and swimming pool just to keep it safe now that duck shooting season is here.

And yes, Linda Bulk admits it’s “ridiculous” but she and partner Rob Brouwer have been raising their paradise duck now for five-and-a-half months since rescuing him from Ngarunui beach, abandoned and alone. And they’ve become very attached to their colourfully feathered friend.

The pair say it’s been nothing short of a “life-changing” experience being so close to a wild animal – to the point where they took him daily to their Droidworx office in Park Drive when he was still a duckling and often whipped home once he got bigger to Upper Wainui Road, where they then lived, just to feed and keep him company.

This is a duck, says Linda, that she first took everywhere with her, wrapped in a shawl and snuggled close in the nape of her neck by day. He slept with the couple at night – and still does – and had his own paddle pool to swim in at the office.

But because Upper Wainui Road was no

place for a fast-growing duck, Linda told the Chronicle they got him a travel box and took him down the way to Wainui Bush Park every day so he could fly around a bit and swim in the pond there.

Meawhile they searched for a more suitable rural property to move to.

One day however, just before their move to Okete Road, Ducky took fright while at

the Bush Park and was lost for a few days. Flyers posted around town brought phone calls with sightings of him here and there, says Linda, and they finally found him at the Kopua boat ramp the very weekend they moved house.

Now he’s possibly the safest and happiest duck in the world, sitting with Linda and Rob in front of TV at night and free to come

and go, inside and out, by day. In a word – paradise.

A couple of public notices in last week’s Chronicle tell some of the story – a thank you to “everyone who helped us find our Ducky” after he went missing, and a poignant plea before the safety enclosure was complete: PLEASE DON’T SHOOT OUR DUCKY!

The White S a p p h i r e (2005), is Chris Thompson’s most recent folk and blues album.

The album is fierce and offers a welcome return to his acoustic style after the more commercial sound of For My Double (2004). The latest Raglan Community House 'Downsize Me' weight loss challenge has just finished and the group celebrated their successes recently.

The winner of the challenge was Mia Morgan who lost an amazing 9.1kg. The runner up was Maureen Wahanga who lost 6.7kg. A fantastic effort both of you – congratulations! The winners each won a voucher for a beauty treatment at Lime Beauty Therapy – thanks Lime for your support in providing one of the vouchers for free!

A small gift was also given to Dorothy Wray in recognition of her achievements. Dorothy joined the 2012 Downsize Me!

Challenge and in the Challenge itself lost 5.2kg. Dorothy has continued to come to the Support Group weigh-ins throughout the remainder of 2012 and into 2013 and has now lost 13.1kg. When Dorothy first came along she was facing some serious health issues but has turned those around and is now fitter, healthier and looking great! Dorothy has achieved her weight loss through a steady 200-300g loss per week and it shows that perseverance and commitment can win the “race” in the long term!

The Weight Loss Support Group continues to run at Raglan Community House. This is usually on a Wednesday between 4 – 5pm but if you can’t make that time we are happy to

weigh you at any time during the week between 8.30am and 4pm so come and have a chat to us if you would like some support.

Dancer sees Raglan as belly good choiceNew Raglan resident Jess Fitzgerald reckons the signs are she’s come to the right place to put down roots. For within just a few weeks of arriving here from Fremantle in Western Australia, she discovered a collection of tribal jewellery at Right Up My Alley in Volcom Lane.

And with her idea of starting a local tribal-style belly dance class – which depends on lots of jewellery for effect – Jess feels she could be in a community of like-minded souls who might just want to shimmy and shake their way through winter for a performance in spring.

So last night at the Union Church hall in Stewart Street, Jess was set to don pantaloons with jewelled belt and a choli, or bodice, with jewelled bra top in which to demonstrate her art form for locals keen to give it a go.

Tribal-style belly dance is a fusion of cultures, Jess explains, inspired by Flamenco, Indian,

North African and Middle Eastern dance. “The costumes celebrate what is sacred to the feminine,” she insists. “But what I love most about Tribal is the connection to people through movement.”

While the dance form has what Jess calls a syllabus of moves, it is also very “instinctual”, she adds.

And it’s quite a “modest” form of dance costume-wise compared with say Egyptian belly dance, where more of the body is bared and harem pants split up the length of the legs.

Tribal belly dancing in contrast is identified by its full, flamboyant 25-yard tribal or “tissue” skirts, she says – more gypsy than harem.

Jess, at 24, has danced most of her life but for the last two-and-a-half years as part of a performance group in Fremantle known as Tribalive – a free spirit dance community. She took over the teaching of classes during her last six months there.

But she and her partner were ready to return home to New Zealand and put down roots, and they came to Raglan on a whim “because we heard it was cool”.

Jess says they were looking for something akin to the alternative lifestyle of Fremantle. And Raglan is even better than she imagined. “There seems to be a really strong community bond … I feel like this is the place (to be).”

Now Jess just wants to find others here to dance and connect with. She’s confident her classes will “evolve” and, hopefully, provide performance opportunities within Raglan and further afield.

This week the Chronicle talks to artist Natasha Reo.

Brief description of your practice?

Painting is where my heart is at. I paint portraits on wood with oil and acrylics, with layers of colourful stencils, incorporating nature and religious icons.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m currently working towards an exhibition, but I’ve been putting most of my energy into my other passion, which is helping others to be more creative. I teach art classes for parents called CreativEmbrace, which is aimed at unleashing parents’ creative potential so that they can inspire their children.

Who are you influenced by?

Gauguin, Klimt, Russian Religious Icons and my dad.

How did you get involved with teaching children clay?

I was teaching troubled kids Art at an Alternative Education school and also Special Needs kids. Clay was by far the most therapeutic and the best medium for extracting their imaginations. I never fail to be amazed by what kids with their uninhibited imaginations create with clay.

The best piece of advice you ever got?

“Dive into Life” My dad

Best: seeing my imagination come to life

Do you have recurring dreams? What about?

I had a constant recurring dream as a kid: I was Little Red Riding Hood being chased by a wolf, I would run into my Cuckoo Clock House, which would fly off using it’s Beany Boy propeller on top. It would land in the middle of the ocean and I would walk out and walk on the water. Please don’t psychoanalyse me! Where’s the couch? I think I need to lie down.

When Iemaja Hassell's little brother Reuben taught her to make paper planes she "caught the bug" and made lots of them. Seeing all the planes lying around she decided that she could sell them and raise some money to give to people who need it. She asked Mum, Jenny Gaunt, who they could give the money too and Mum suggested the Raglan Foodbank.

So on Friday 3rd May, Iemaja 6yrs, Reuben 4yrs and Iemaja's friend Piri 5yrs, set up in Bow St with their signs saying they were selling paper aeroplanes to raise money for "homeliss people who have no money" in Raglan.

They worked as a team with Reuben stopping people and then Iemaja and Piri showing the signs and explaining what they were doing and selling the planes.

During the morning, these three delightful children raised $56 for the Raglan Foodbank who were very grateful for the donation.

What an inspiration to our community. With children like this as members of our community, Raglan's future wellbeing is assured, said Chrissy Hodkinson of Raglan Community House.
