Hello Raglan,We hope you enjoy your new look

Chronicle. We thought it was time for a change and are excited to present this new design - with a masthead that now ties in with our building signage.

We have also changed the headline

‘hard’ and ‘soft’ news within the paper. We would like to acknowledge the

work done by our dedicated Chronicle team. Thank you to Maki Nishiyama for her impeccable design skills and patience while working through this process with us. We would also like to thank Shelley Meek for her invaluable opinion and guidance during this period. Thanks to Edith Symes for courageously chasing all the stories we give her and producing them on time each week. Alan Thorley for all the ‘behind the scenes’ work he does and providing a ‘sounding board’ for any issues that come up. To Tracie Heasman for supplying the sublime images that often grace our front page and compliment the stories within. Finally our warmest thanks to Judith Collins, our loyal and dedicated ‘proof’ reader.

We are fortunate to be supported by such an incredible team that make it possible to bring you the Chronicle every week with a minimum of fuss.

To the Editor,Our young people are often condemned

for scateboarding on footpathes etc and scooters users are also spoken of in quite a negative way. Our scateboard park has been a real boon and one must agree that the skills, balance and quite tricky sequences that many execute are to be respected and

acknowledged as worthy of the term advanced achievement. Raglan could turn

Raglan Experience by making the centre of the town a Scateboard Friendly Zone where these youth use the main carriage way and

the roads. Raglan could become Scateboard

Town for NZ with suitable exhibitions, competitions and an annual ‘Skateboard Games’ with racing, acrobatics, dancing etc. There would need to be a set of comprehensive safety rules and safety gear

to my knowledge. Extra lighting would improve safety and no doubt a fence would help! But must we fence off and further restrict I wonder? Parents and caregivers with small children are regular visitors. Would fences give a false sense of safety and allow caregivers to relax too much? I think it may and so create a more dangerous environment. I am usually awakened by many events and happenings at the wharf, somehow I missed this very sad tragedy. I do think extra lighting is a good idea, but I really wonder about fencing. Next we will

that will be a sad day for many hundreds of our citizens, young and not so young.

Waikato District Council’s

felling without resource

consent of a protected

oak tree in Cliff Street has brought

a “please explain” from Raglan

Community Board chairman

Rodger Gallagher.

In an email last Friday, Mr Gallagher

told council general manager strategy

and support Tony Whittaker the tree’s

removal “doesn’t leave me with a good

feeling of actions being carried out in a

planned manner” and he was concerned

about what might happen in the future.

“There is a history of grounds

maintenance along Cliff Street being

carried out poorly … this latest incident

just seems to be a continuance of this

unmanaged approach,” he said.

Mr Gallagher has asked Mr

Whittaker to explain to next month’s

community board meeting why normal

resource consent procedures weren’t

followed over a tree which, he said, did

not seem in any immediate danger of

falling down.

He’s also asked the council – among

other questions – why the Holm oak is

being replaced by a pohutukawa when

picked a certain mix of trees many

years ago “and it is that mix that is now

protected”.

The “please explain” comes despite

council staff insistence – in an email

copied to the Chronicle – that the oak

was found during routine maintenance to

ready to fall over yesterday!”.

The internal council email reveals

the arborist did a test on the tree using

a rubber mallet before Noel Barber, a

council representative on the Raglan

coastal reserves advisory committee,

made the call to remove the tree on

health and safety grounds and because

of the bad weather at the time.

In other questions to council Mr

Gallagher has sought details of the arborist’s

cuts on neighbouring trees weren’t treated

immediately the tree rot fungus was found.

The alarm over the oak’s felling without

resource consent was raised by council

watchdog and Cliff Street resident John

Lawson, who said the state of the branches

on the street side of the tree made it appear

no urgent action was needed.

There have been several fusses in recent

years over the felling of trees about town,

including a controversy in early 2011 when

a stand of poplars west of the skatepark was

removed at the request of the coastal reserves

advisory committee after council staff

advised the trees – many of them broken or

falling down – were hazardous to the area.

The area occupied by the poplars has been

replaced by new plantings and a BMX track.

There were also rumblings in the

community recently when a dozen trees on

a 100-metre stretch of road reserve above

Wainui Road, south of Helen Place, were

chopped down ostensibly for safety reasons.

But the biggest controversy was back in

2007 when a staff report to Waikato district

councillors suggested Raglan needed to

plan for the replacement of the iconic giant

phoenix palms in the centre of town. The

fuss died down after reassurances that any

“frond farewell” to the palms was decades

away.

This week the Chronicle

caught up with well known and

accomplished musician Ashley

Knox.

Image: thanks to Tracie

Heasman.

How would you describe the

music you play?

I’m a wee bit Jekyll and Hyde on this one. One side of me is into soulfolk eclecticism, the other side electronic broken beat drum n bass.

What bands have you been a

member of over the years?

Fuse, Numotion, Jayson Norris, Cherie Mathieson, Jason Eli, Dan Sperber Complex, Goodriders, “Band Of High Cloud” and “The Kryptonites”

Do you come from a musical

family?

Not at all, Mum used to be a hairdresser and Dad’s a draftsman,

harp tho......

play and when?

The recorder at primary school and I hated it! I was a naughty student who didn’t practice which was always embarrassing come performance time

What in your memory is your

best gig ever?

Sydney, a bookstore called “Gertrude and Alice” playing solo to about 30 people who didn’t talk all through out my tunes and clapped willingly without prompting.

Apart from people and pets -

My Macbook as it has lots of snippets of musical ideas on it, Its kind of like my songbook.

Are you a dog or a cat person?

I dig both but a dog’s loyalty is hard to fault.

Best piece of advice ever given?

If something’s worth doing, its still worth doing badly.

Do you have recurring dreams?

If so what about?

YES I do regularly dream one of my songs gets featured in a hugely successful movie, thus enabling child raising, music creation and

concerns

What four people dead or alive

would you invite for dinner?

Stevie Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Jose Feliciano and Quincy Jones

If money were no object what

frivolous non essential would you

buy for yourself?

A Byron Bay batch.

If you could live any time in

history when would it be?

Lots of people may think other wise but I think now is pretty fantastic, there is so much access to information and music plus wetsuits are pretty good these days.

In another life what career would

you have?

An architect, I dig beautiful houses.

Where can we hear you play?

The Kryptonites are currently having a break from our monthly gig at Vinnies, but to check out our tunes and keep up to date with gigs please visit https://www.facebook.com/thekryptonitesnz

general areas they’re targeting and the species they are catching,” she says.Niwa’s pleased with the level of

co-operation it’s getting in Raglan, where the survey’s at about its mid-point. “We don’t get many refusals to be interviewed, and most [boaties] are happy to have us measure and count their different species,” says Nicola. She sees some “good patterns”

emerging from the survey. “Fishermen love to talk about

sustainability,” she says. Niwa’s study has also shown, she says,

Sisters shocked as storybook wins mentions in US awardsWaitetuna School teacher

Margery O’Connell could hardly believe what she was hearing when her sister Jenny Somervell rang in the middle of class recently with the news their latest self-published storybook, ‘Old Truck’, had won two honourable mentions in an American book competition which attracts entries from all over the world. The pair say they were on cloud

nine for a couple of days after the unexpected accolade. The children’s book – illustrated

by Marge, who lives in Raglan, and written by Cantabrian Jennifer – tells the real-life story of a 92-year-old Republic truck rescued from a dingy farm shed and lovingly restored. It paints a picture of their

childhood in the seventies while growing up on the family farm in Hawke’s Bay. And it’s won them an honourable mention in both the

(6 & older) categories of the 2013

Marge says she always believed their books – part of a planned ‘Tales of the Farm’ series – would

record of farming in the seventies. And as a teacher and mother of four, she had a good idea of what kids would like. The sisters are “over the moon”

even to get a mention in the book awards, especially as it was the

competition which recognises excellence in children’s literature. They entered the American

competition only because they’d

deadlines, they say. “We thought that sending it [their book] to America was a very long shot!”The awards are geared toward

stories that appeal to children of all ages, say competition organisers. They give published authors and illustrators both credibility and recognition and, in doing so, help further their careers.‘Old Truck’ is the second book to

be published by Jennifer and Marge

– who as an illustrator goes by her maiden name Fern – in the series.

Dad Blew Up the Cowshed’, was

is now in its second edition. Marge and Jennifer are now

working on ‘The Eel Hunt’ – another “riotous” family adventure and “very un-PC”, they say – set in the upper reaches of the Manawatu River. “We have a tradition of

storytelling in the family,” they add, “and don’t think we will run out (of adventures).” Edith Symes

Manu Bay surf break rated among worlds best

Daffodil Day is just around the corner and the Waikato/

Bay of Plenty Cancer Society is looking for an area coordinator in Raglan to make their annual fundraiser a success. Area coordinators work with

local volunteers to organise Daffodil Day activities in their town, including a street appeal and sales of fresh daffodils. “Daffodil Day is our largest annual

fundraiser and area coordinators and their team of volunteers are what make this appeal a success,” says Cancer Society spokesperson Rachael Mounsey. “Giving your time and skills is a great way to support the Cancer Society and your local community. “It’s a lot of fun to be an area

coordinator but you do need to be organised. There is a lot of support offered from us and other volunteers, it’s a team effort.”The Cancer Society receives no

direct government funding and relies on the support and generosity of our communities to operate.“Last year Daffodil Day raised

over $600,000 in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty Division, which was

spent on providing supportive care for cancer patients, their carers, whanau and friends, funding cancer research and providing the public with information on the ways to reduce the risk of cancer through a smoke free, sun smart, healthy lifestyle.”For more information or to

Regional recognition for Raglan Bowling ClubTopping off a fantastic outdoor bowling season Raglan Bowling Club members received some highly prized awards at the recent annual Bowls Waikato prize-giving.Club president, Ruth

the Year award, nominated by the Waikato Centre President for all the organising she does, seemingly effortlessly, at regional level.“I was delighted to nominate

Ruth who really deserves special mention for going above and beyond the call when it comes to the committees she is involved with. She is extremely reliable and

has a mind that can work problems out quickly,” said President Peter Ramsey.Meanwhile other Raglan

bowling recipients included Green Keeper of the Year award Terry Green, Ashleigh Jeffcoat, awarded Secondary School Bowler of the Year for an outstanding season and Sue Russell for the 5 Year and Under Women’s Singles title. But for those from the club who attended the prize-giving probably the most satisfying award went to our two interclub teams, comprising 18 bowlers from Raglan who took out both mixed-

Unscheduled discharge of fully treated wastewater

Following the recent high levels of rainfall in the

Raglan area, Waikato District Council recently completed an unscheduled discharge of fully treated wastewater outside the normal tidal periods.

The Raglan Wastewater Treatment Plant’s pond system reached maximum storage capacity, making a discharge of treated wastewater necessary to reduce the risk of the ponds spilling over in an uncontrolled manner.

Waikato District Council General Manager Service Delivery, Tim

Harty says “The discharge met the quality requirements of the Council’s consent which includes ensuring that the discharge meets bathing water standards.”

“Waikato Regional Council has been advised of this as required under the consent, and other key stakeholders have also been informed.”

so used to seeing.Last week CNN in conjunction

compiled a list of the ‘World’s best surf spots’ and our very own Manu Bay came in at 17th place. The rankings were based on a number of judging points including surf culture, creature comforts and the quality of waves.“Made famous in the 1960s as

a location in the surf classic, The Endless Summer, atmosphere is key at this sleepy town. Bars and cafes play surf videos and serve healthy smoothies and fresh cakes. The waves on this wide-open bay range from one metre to about three, with an occasional barrel.” CNN said of Raglan.Other spots on the list included

150-metre ride in Samoa, a tropical beach in China as well as the usual contenders like Pipeline, Teahupo’o and Uluwatu.“I guess Manu Bay is appealing

to most people ‘cause it doesn’t get any easier. You just drive in, park

and right in front of you is one of the best, longest breaks in the world - and you can get out without even getting your hair wet,” said

adding, “it’s also just so naturally beautiful, driving down through the

really well, with many people using our bag depo, both dropping of bags and reusing bags. It is great to get the support for this, such little actions can make a difference if enough people become involved. If you have any ideas about anything to do with Plastic Free July that you think would work here at The Herbal Dispensary please let us know we would love to hear them!Herbal News:Today I would like to share with you a recipe

that I often share with mums in the shop, it is an

easy to make and the ingredients are often at hand in the pantry.Onion and Honey syrup:Roughly chop 1 organic onion, place in a small

bowl, cover the chopped onion with a good local honey, manuka works well. Then place a small plate over the top of the bowl to cover and leave to stand on the bench overnight. In the morning you will have a liquid of the onion juice and honey which you can strain off. Save the juice, discard the onion, it is the juice that you want. Give this to your children in ½ to 1 teaspoon doses. This is helpful for congestion and sore throats. The Herbal Dispensary - 825 7444
