Samples analysed by Hill Laboratories in Hamilton show a staggering 2400 E.coli

Karioi Lodge past longtime resident Dennis Conquest’s property and into Whale Bay. The test was arranged after he

complained at a recent residents meeting on the sewage issue that the stream stunk and was badly polluted.Fellow Whale Bay resident Sandra

Ellmers said while this was the result of just one test, if tests were taken regularly from the streams and ocean around Manu and Whale Bays – and also Ngarunui

dangerous coliform levels.Sandra, who has property holdings

here and a substantial beachfront tourism operation at Gisborne, said before the council went ahead with any residential reticulation it should test frequently the on-site systems at Karioi Lodge, Solscape and the Bryant Home Bible Camp – as well as at Manu Bay reserve and Ngarunui Beach – to monitor their effectiveness.

on-site treatment systems are not up to standard then any new reticulation system for the Whaanga Coast must include these larger properties before more damage is done to our waterways and ocean and they are deemed unsafe for swimming,” she said.

She said a gravity sewage system should be looked at as a sensible, long-term solution must be found. The cheaper option proposed might end up being very expensive if it did not take care of the wider problem.Sandra added it seemed blatantly

obvious to many Whaanga Coast residents that the large tourist operations were not able to adequately treat their waste on-site. She understood Karioi Lodge was still operating under the original consent held

operation with a very high occupancy rate and substantial demands on its ground sewage treatment system all year round. However Karioi Lodge operator

Charlie Young told the Chronicle it was a misnomer they had an outdated system. The lodge had a current resource consent which was reissued six or seven years ago.“Our property is very large and we

system which is okay according to the engineers,” he said.“As with any system it needs regular

maintenance and monitoring, and in another process just over a week ago we’ve gone back through our entire system with the regional council. We had some concerns initially and immediately addressed them.”Charlie said it was a top priority to

minimise any impact on the environment and they had a “pretty good track record over the past 11 years”.Solscape co-owner Phil McCabe said

they installed a new wastewater system in 2008 because the inherited one was failing. It was a sizeable investment and he had been reassured by a Waikato Regional Council spot check 4-6 weeks ago that the system was functioning properly.

Phil added he didn’t agree with the Whaanga Coast linking up to the town system. “We should be essentially dealing with waste ourselves rather than exporting the problem.”That’s at variance with the stance

of the nearby Bible Camp, which it is understood has asked to link up with the town sewerage system but has been told the current project is for residential lots only.Meanwhile Dennis Conquest insisted

that to clean up Whale Bay “we need to look at all the sources of pollution … cleaning up the streams is part of that”. He said the Waikato Regional Council had turned a blind eye to this problem and allowed it to continue polluting the neighbourhood for years. The regional council, however,

said this week that was “completely incorrect”. Staff had recently inspected the wastewater treatment systems of all Whaanga Coast accommodation providers and taken water quality samples from streams. “We’re still in the process of analysing

the information and, should that identify improvements to systems are needed, we will work closely with landowners and Waikato District Council to address any problems,” said spokesman Stephen Ward.Waikato District Council water

& facilities general manager Richard Bax told the Chronicle monitoring of waterways was the regional council’s responsibility.

problems in the areas of the Whaanga Coast, which this new reticulation system is designed to address,” he said. “The system was chosen as the best solution environmentally and as being the best possible from an economic perspective.”Edith Symes

Molly Hamilton, 11, and Savon Tovio-Smith, 12, made it to the second cut, along with fellow team members Briana Hayes and Shania Devenport,

selection. It’s a “well-deserved” reward

for the pair, says their coach Naomi Tovio, now into her second season with Raglan Netball Club and who once played in the under-21 Waikato reps herself. Both girls are very excited, she

adds.

To have two reps from Raglan’s small pool of players is really good for a town of this size, says Naomi. But like all representative sport, it does take a lot of commitment from the players and their families.Molly, a shooter, and Savon, a

defender, will now train midweek at Minogue Park on top of their usual Tuesday practices at the netball courts in Cross Street. Weekends will see them playing

competitively on Saturdays as usual within their local teams, while they’ll participate most Sundays in rep

them the opportunity to be selected for the Waikato Development Squad programme.Naomi believes both her young

highly competitive sport.

They shape who we are and what we do.They’re like the programmes on a computer that determine what it will do and how we can use it. It’s helpful to be able to access whichever

programme we need but there’s heaps of stuff cached away that gets in the way and slows everything down. We don’t know how or when it got there, it’s just been gathered up and stored automatically. Your mind works in basically the same way and it’s estimated that as much as 95% of your beliefs and programmes aren’t

even originally yours. They’ve come from other people, society, c o n v e n t i o n , tradition, most of them acquired before the age of ten! It’s old news, unhelpful and limiting. Like a virus it works from the inside out and distorts and complicates what should be simple. Life really should be simple and joyful and it is when you’re in

the problems that constantly arise.

As an energy worker experienced in spiritual guidance, I can help you to raise your vibration

suffering and working so hard and experience the peace and joy of the life you were born to live. You are more than a mash-up of second-hand thoughts, beliefs and ideals, you are a powerful creator and I will assist you in opening up to the grace that’s constantly raining on you so you can live authentically as such. Your enlightenment can begin as soon as you choose to let it in.

I offer coaching, personal development and energy work. Please call Dawn to make an appointment on

All visitors need do to get an i-deal – which could be anything from two coffees for the price of one to a bottle of bubbly with an accommodation booking – is to pick up

their free i-deal cards from either Huntly or Raglan i-SITES and score a “ticket to Raglan shopping heaven”. It’s also a good deal for the Raglan

economy as local businesses get a boost during the traditionally quieter trading months of winter from June to September. It’s a joint venture – trialled last December

– between Raglan Chamber of Commerce and Waikato Enterprise Agency which runs

the two i-SITES, and is designed to encourage visitors to “stay and play here longer”.Tourists are directed via a large

billboard on SH1 right outside the Huntly i-SITE, to “go to the Wildside!” and “discover Raglan” for themselves.“We use the i which is a powerful

recognised brand that belongs to Tourism NZ and can only be used by accredited i-SITES, and we have extended it to create the i-deal,” explains Raglan Information Centre manager Anthea Jackson.“We can pass business on to

activity and accommodation operators and also refer our customers to the other participating businesses,” she adds. “We hope the synergy created will gain momentum and extend into other areas of cooperation between business operators.” Forty local businesses from

accommodation providers and eateries to boutique shops, studios and activities have signed up to the scheme, displaying posters to show their participation in the discount-based initiative.*Meantime Raglan Information

Centre gets to distribute prizes for the Fieldays window dressing competition next week, after this year’s winners have been announced. The 10 participating retailers were to have their shop windows – displaying farm themes – judged by Fieldays’ staff in town on Wednesday. Prizes of $500, $250 and $50 with a bottle of wine were up for grabs.

He said he was concerned that the government is funding headline cuts in hospital waiting lists at the expense of primary care, which in the end will result in even longer waiting lists. Kevin said he was aware of many cases where minor symptoms had been ignored to save on fees, only to result in the need for expensive hospital treatment. In Raglan the problem is reduced by being in a low decile

area, with lower than average fees, and up to now it has been possible to make arrangements with patients so that no one has gone without treatment.Kevin said the budget increases in prescription charges

would worsen the problem. “In Raglan take up of prescriptions has in the past been delayed.”Another change in the budget affected the elderly. Labour

and the Greens had supported moving to end means tests for rest home care. The budget had frozen that change.Kevin praised the initiative of Raglan Greens in setting up

the series of meetings and hoped it would be followed elsewhere in the country. Another series of meetings may be run in the spring. John Lawson

get into. When I tell my friends at Girls High that I’m a bowler they think I mean ten-pin bowling. When I say no, they say ‘Oh you mean that oldies sport’”, she says with a chuckle.Practicing weekly in Hamilton and catching up from

time to time here with Raglan coach Terry Green, Ashleigh has discovered there’s a lot more skill involved in pushing a bowl down to a little white ball.

That’s when my bowls can go wonkly-doodly. I’m learning to believe in myself and it makes a big difference to my bowling. I’m working on my feet position so I can get the green right.”Coach Terry thinks Ashleigh’s got the makings of a

very good bowler. “She listens and really takes

in what she hears and puts it into practice. That’s a big part to improving at the sport. She’s also got an excellent temperament which will stand her in good stead”.A recent highlight for

Ashleigh was when she attended Bowls Waikato’s prize-giving night where she received her Waikato shirt and

said a few words to the bowlers and dignitaries gathered.“My Dad said if I went to

the prize-giving I had to speak, so I did. It was a really good night.”Saturday’s tournament is

at Frankton Railway Bowling Club, a large indoor bowling

the Raglan Area

With every week that went past we had a new member join and halfway through the spring term our numbers were up to 18 and the water had started to warm up a little.

At the end of the term it was time to have some fun with an

BBQ for all to enjoy. With the Swimming Club

up and running we started to teach pre-schoolers;; lessons became full in the Christmas Holiday programme. We were not expecting that, it was fantastic. So we thought the only age group we have not catered for is the adults;; we began SwimFit with Dr Loten

as the weeks went past more adults joined and when the surf instructors turned up it was full to capacity. Roll on Term 4 and Summer

so we can all get swimming again! If you are interested, check

us out on our website at www.swimsupport.co.nz or via

OPINION: Value for money by Ian McKissack

What a bag: Hunters Murray Potter with heaviest paradise duck and pheasant and

Brent Hayes with heaviest duck

I have a healthy respect for knowing where my taxes go, whether to central or local

what smiling John Key and his courtiers are up to because they are down there in Wellington and we have to trust their P.R. teams and the media. But where local government is concerned we are better placed to see where our rates are going. While it is safer with the road to Hamilton in good condition, the amount of attention it seems to need is considerable. Who makes these decisions? On what criteria? We may not be doing the hard graft but we are signing the cheques.A complex pipe laying activity I am paying

for has thwarted my daily saunter down to

Lorenzen Bay. Apparently it has become necessary to send the wastewater from new subdivisions that drains to the bottom of Lorenzen Bay Road up to the Cambrae Road part of the system,. I have no idea why, but it looks expensive. Instead of destroying the walkway steps downward from Cambrae they have laid pipes underground using a very new complex machine which burrows, like a mole. I wonder what it cost.I am particularly interested in where my

rates go as there is a new local body proposal to cut out the Raglan bus on Sundays and public holidays. This is such a petty idea when you think about the huge amounts spent elsewhere.

Prizes were offered for the heaviest pheasant, won by Murray Potter at 1.460 kg and heaviest duck - won by Brent Hayes at 1.420kg. Murray Potter also won heaviest paradise duck weighing in at 1.810kg. Winners walked away with prizes sponsored by Big Country Outdoors. The next monthly

Playground clay bird shoot is 1pm on the June 24th at the Playground in Te Uku. Call
