To the Editor,Oh what great joy, wonder and big
chunky bits of yippee – yi – yay!The call for assistance has again
been answered. Yes, my little yellow dinghy that escaped from Puriri Bay during the storm has been found.
Braving adverse conditions and cliff high waves, our fine seaman Ian, shunned fear and plucked our dinghy from the sea, and towed her to safety.
Once again the marvellous people of Raglan have responded, I give sincere thanks.
I am at present fundraising to erect a statue of Ian at Puriri Bay.
Stay warm. Steve Thackray, RaglanTo The Edior,Saturday 25th of May a grey
drizzle day turns into a` filled with pouring down rain` night but that didn`t stop Raglanites to come and enjoy and appreciate our colorful and amazing fashion show `COLOR ME HAPPY`with Moz-art and Moko creations.
So a huge big thank you for who ever was involved.
First Ardre Foote, manager of the Matapihi Gallery who always manages to turns this stunning gallery space into an awesome venue for a fashion show and for her ongoing support towards me, Lin Van Craenenbroeck, by wearing my creations and by giving me the oppurtunity to be a part of Matapihi gallery, having my studio
with all my creations in the back.I want to thank the whole Matapihi
gallery crew for helping to make it happen with all your ongoing energy and support, long before the show even can go ahead.
So a big thank you to all of you for your effort, support, love, energy that I`m getting from every single one off you, Ardre, Jette, Yann, Linda, the light and p.a system people, Kat and Sema for helping on the night, Lisa, Keni, Yann, Irma, Marce, Yazz, Brittaney, Em and the beautiful kids, who all did an outstanding job modeling......you girls are stunning! Yazz and Linda Holmes for hair and make-up and taking pictures.
Also a big thank you to the male models, Russ, Christophe, Wayne, Damien, Antonio, you all wowed the female crowd. Dirk and Josh for helping with the set-up. Thank you to the Fire Service for use of chairs, and for the people who wanted to come and be there and have a colorful amazing night. Without all single one of you, the show wouldn’t even be happening.....YOU ALL ROCK.
Sorry if I have missed out somebody, not the intention, but so many people are involved that it is hard to remember every body.
Anyway lots of love from the bottom of my heart to everybody who made it happen. (Abridged)
Lin Van Craenenbroeck, Raglan

Raglan Plunket are literally having a ball with their latest baby – a project to pull their historic rooms in Bow Street “into the 21st century”.
Their Raglan Midwinter Christmas Ball next month will launch a big fundraising push to extend the building, opened way back in 1949 after six years of cake stalls and other ventures to raise the £600 required, into an “Under 5s Hive” centralising all Plunket’s local services.
Raglan Plunket president Linda Cole says the organisation is thriving and the plan is to create more space for parenting education and community support groups, and also to house the extremely popular toy library.
“There is a growing need to expand … the Plunket community service and support for our families here in Raglan,” she says.
To kick off the fundraising in style “and be part of this exciting new chapter in Raglan Plunket history”, Raglanites and also out-of-towners are being urged to dust off their gladrags and come along to the ball, which is to be held at the Raglan Club.
The Plunket support group is challenging the community to “dig out that glam ball attire … or hit the op shops and go as far back in time as you dare” in preparation for dancing away the midwinter blues.
The ball is open to anyone 18 or over and will have a Winter Wonderland theme. There’ll be a live band – Rocky Rhodes – along with beau and belle of the ball prizes, a best op shop attire award and spot prizes.
Organisers are also promising a delicious Christmas-themed supper, and that some “exceptional items or services” will be up for grabs in a charity auction on the night.
Meanwhile, plans for the extension of the Plunket rooms are being drawn up in Wellington and are proving no straightforward task.
Linda says that because the building is registered as historic, alterations and extensions need to be as close as possible to the original – right down to its orange-tiled roof which, she admits, “is a bit of a nightmare”.
On the financial side the Meridian-Te Uku Community Fund has come up with a
grant of $2950 for re-wiring but other than that it’s largely up to Raglanites to support this community-owned facility, adds Linda.
Raglan Midwinter Christmas Ball is at the Raglan Club, Saturday June 22, 7.30 till late. Tickets now on sale at Raglan Community House and Raglan Pharmacy – $40 single, $70 double. No door sales.

Get down to the Harbour View Hotel on Sunday night for the grand final of Masterchef New Zealand and show your support for local Aaron Brunet who secured his spot in the final over the weekend. In Sunday’s show, the top three contestants to Aaron’s delight were taken out to The French Cafe to celebrate their achievements. The next day they had to replicate two dishes from the six-course menu.
Working under French Café executive chef Simon Wright, the top three’s dishes needed to resemble Simon’s recipes and his presentation exactly. Aaron appeared to thrive on the challenge “It’s amazing to be back here and doing the real deal.”
Judge Josh Emmet asked Aaron what it would mean to be sent home “It would be the worst thing of all, not to get to the final, it would be heartbreaking, truly heartbreaking.”
We then heard from an emotional Aaron that he had wanted to be a chef when he was young but it wasn’t the right time. “I’m just so glad to get here and realize it’s what I want to do. I feel like whether I win or not, I’m going to do it.”
Given four hours to prepare their dishes, they served them to guests including MasterChef judges Simon Gault and Ray McVinnie and eight culinary heavyweights: chefs who had appeared during the latest MasterChef NZ and MasterClass season.
The judges were hugely impressed with all 3 contestants but Aaron won the challenge, serving roasted quail with pancetta, mushrooms, chestnuts, croissants and truffle butter; and vanilla cream with pear, elderflower, sauternes and lychee.
Kelly Kaihea became the fourteenth contestant from the Top 16 to be eliminated. Aaron will go up against Paula Saengthian-Ngam on Sunday night in the final showdown. Aaron and Paula have both touched the hearts of people in New Zealand with their authentic passion for good food and respectful natures but it’s Aaron our town will be rooting for. What ever the outcome we will be proud of ‘our guy’ and his consistently great performance in the toughest of competitions. J. K

No increase to landfill drop-off chargesXtreme Waste has announced there will be no increase in landfill drop-off charges this year. This welcome announcement includes prepaid refuse bags and drop-off charges at the Raglan Recycling Centre, which stay at $2.70 for blue bags, $1.50 for yellow bags and $45 per cubic metre respectively.
Though landfill costs are rising, Xtreme Waste spokesperson Rick Thorpe says they’re happy with this decision. “This year we face continuing challenges with income, due to lower commodity prices, and increasing transportation costs.” A new carbon tax and the waste levy also increase costs. “Thankfully our ongoing focus on increasing efficiency and cutting costs allows us to maintain, rather than increase, prices. Over time, these carbon and waste levies will be increased by the government so the only way to avoid them is to divert as much as possible from landfill.”
“As well as operating efficiently, our constitution encourages us to provide employment opportunities. Where other waste management companies might buy machines, we employ people. Turning Raglan’s waste into wages is one of our core values as a community enterprise” he says.
Operations Manager, Gavin Melgren agrees, but notes that the community also play their part in enabling low costs. “Every year the public get better at sorting waste which saves time and
increases the amounts that can be diverted. That’s less sent to landfill and more jobs and more money going into Raglan’s local economy!”
Gavin also notes that removing lids from plastic bottles and washing and squashing plastics and cans will
further increase efficiency in the sorting area.
Thanks Raglan for your continued efforts which helps Whaingaroa move towards zero waste and keeps landfill costs down.

Jewellery designers Kim Waterson and Cheryl Beere have combined their passion for beating silver into submission and are showing the results this Friday.
Cheryl came from a background of larger metal works into a silversmithing apprenticeship in California in 2000, supplying galleries and stores across the states.
Kim studied in both Auckland and San Francisco, and has taken her interest in original design and fabrication of sterling silver pieces to the public.
The exhibition this Friday will have on display numerous hand crafted one of a kind pieces with a variety of both of their works. Their works are regularly seen at Jet Collective and they supply private commission works.

Classy ‘shelter’ opened for re-engaging studentsA brand-new classroom designed as an alternative education centre for a handful of Raglan Area School students was officially opened last Friday – and although it cost about $30,000 more than a standard classroom, it’s an “investment for the future”, says principal Malcolm Cox.
For the architecturally designed, hexagon-shaped courtyard and room – complete with its own kitchen – caters for about 10 year 8 to 11 students who have become “disengaged” from education.
They’re the ones that would “normally be asked politely to leave (the school)”, Malcolm explains.
Instead they’re engaged in a programme called Te Mana o Te Rangatahi, or the pride of the youth, which teaches them not only literacy and numeracy skills so they can stay at school and get qualifications, but also life skills like gardening, cooking and maintaining their own room.
It’s another pathway or strategy for engagement, Malcolm adds, and while Te Mana o Te Rangatahi is now in its tenth year of success the new building called Te Piruru, or the shelter, gives validity to the programme the Education Ministry calls alternative education.
Local kaumatua Sean Ellison and Paddy Kaa were there on Friday to bless the multi-purpose classroom, stressing to the students the importance of a shelter which will enable them to learn in their own way under the guidance of teacher Jonathan Rickard, who’s now into his second year with the alternative programme.
Sean reminded the students their new building was “not just a bus shelter but the flashest classroom of the whole school … look after it, it’s yours”.
Ward councillor Clint Baddeley was thanked for coming along too “and giving us the mana”.
Clint congratulated the board of trustees and the school for “providing something so important in the development of our students”, and like the kaumatua spoke of the classroom’s connection to the land – with the sun coming in, the mountain and harbour behind.
Malcolm too acknowledged the whenua connection, and spoke to the students about “staying connected” on their own journeys.
He also revealed at Friday’s opening that the area school’s recent roll growth meant there were now funds for two more new classrooms – one this year and one next – plus money to refurbish the junior block before the end of the year.

Fifty Royal Spoonbills have recently been sighted in the upper reaches of Raglan Harbour by John and Stella Rowe, members of the Ornithological Society New Zealand (OSNZ).
One of the birds was leg banded with distinctive coloured leg bands by OSNZ at Green Island Nature Reserve, Dunedin in 2005. It has been seen in the Raglan flock in 2005, 2007 and again in April 2013.
In May, eleven spoonbills were seen resting and preening at high tide on Okete shell bank. These birds travel from the South Island to feed on the rich food of our harbours during winter.
The Royal Spoonbill has pure white feathers, black legs, black face and a 21cm long spoon-shaped black bill. They are relatively large birds measuring 81cm (approx.) in length.
Royal Spoonbills are not known to have nested in this area, however with the numbers observed there may be sufficient birds to establish a breeding colony on Raglan Harbour. We would be interested to hear of sightings of spoonbills and nesting behaviour during September/December, phone Pam 07 825 0185.

Q & A: Lennart Prinz
This week the Chronicle talked to Lennart Prinz (Lenny) who’s in the business of growing his own mushrooms and produces a range of chilli sauces. Image: Tracie Heasman
How did it come about that you started growing mushrooms and making chilli sauce?
I started growing mushrooms after reading a book on permaculure and being inspired to make a living off the land. The chilli sauce is a continuation of that, by diversifying I create a more stable business and it helps to do something you like. I have always loved cooking, preserving and eating and I especially love condiments!
What were you doing prior to this?I was in my final year of study, majoring in film and
psychology, when I was given the book which started it all and when I finished my degree I decided to just go for it! The mushrooms are now what I am known for but it is only a piece of what I am doing and hope to do.
Best way to eat your mushrooms?I like them sauteed in butter with a little garlic or spring
onions, a generous twist of black pepper and sprinkle of salt to accompany anything: poached eggs, pasta, fish meat anything really. For a little more decadence reducing some cream with the sauteed mushrooms is a winner.
OK so how hot is your chilli sauce? Describe the favour?I do a range of sauces and spice, I was inspired by the
smokey flavours of the mexican chipotle peppers (cold smoked red jalapenos). My cold smoked chilli sauce is medium to hot for most palates but definitely not hot for the chillihead. The savory smokiness goes great on anything, I think. I use it on my breakfast eggs or grilled meats, it makes a nice addition to a dressing with mayonaise or mixed with sour cream or cream cheese as a dip.
Do you come from a foodie family or a family that has grown their own produces?
I grew up on a lifestyle block and the vege garden, orchard and beefies were a staple. My mum and dad both are excellent cooks and I always enjoyed being in the kitchen growing up and helping.
How did you end up living in Raglan? When I decided to try my hand at permaculture both my
mum and dad were very supportive and I had two very similar family owned lifestyle properties to choose from. One on the east coast and one here in Raglan. I decided on Raglan because of its close community and abundance of likeminded people.
What has been the biggest barrier in your business? My biggest problem right now is not being able to connect
to broadband (two years on the waiting list) and not having cellphone coverage either!
What is the best thing about what you do?The reaction and support I have from customers that love
my products. I often have long absences from the market and when I return I always have people saying how they missed the shrooms and the sauce.
Who are you inspired by?By the pioneers of permaculture and obviously the
author of the book that sent me on this path Austrian - Sepp Holzer. Mycologist and proponent of mycoreforestation and bioremediation - Paul Staments.
Where do you sell the mushrooms and Chilli sauce? Currently at the Hamilton Farmers’ Market on Sundays
8-12 in the Claudelands carpark on River Road. At Mexicomidas mexican restaurant in Hamilton. The Farm Shop newly opened in Gordonton and as of the 1st of June Queen’s birthday weekend my mushrooms and ‘Los Gringos Locos’ sauces will be available in Raglan. They will be stocked at ‘hello gallery’ 11 Bankart St (Behind atamira) - which is celebrating its newcomers with a winter show on the Saturday 1st June(Queens birthday) between 4 and 8pm with all new produce/creations and winter sales. All welcome!
Not quite a luncheon but still an event to celebrate, Raglan will be holding its very own pink ribbon breast cancer awareness and fundraising bruncheon on Saturday 8th June.
Following on from the pink fun run and walk held earlier this year, the bruncheon is an annual event that takes place to fundraise
for breast cancer research. Every day up to seven women will be
diagnosed with breast cancer in New Zealand. In the Waikato alone around 250-300 women are diagnosed every year with a form of breast cancer.
A national initiative, the Raglan bruncheon will have a guest speaker visiting from Pukekohe who will be sharing her
personal story of surviving cancer treatment. With yummy baked goods and a tasty
brunch planned, ladies of the community are invited once again to support and promote the fight against cancer.
Pink Ribbon Luncheon, Sat 8th June @ Raglan West church, 7 Taipari Avenue, 10.30am. Bookings are essential so please phone Suzanne 825 6560.
Pink Ribbon bruncheon for breast cancer awareness
A fabulous fashion show at Matapihi on Saturday night was a night to remember for the 50 or so guests who attended.
Matapihi Art gallery was transformed into an intimate venue with a red carpet catwalk meandering between the spaces. Local identities modelled garments from Moz-Art and MOKO who both sell their clothing at Matapihi.
Lin Van Craenenbroeck from Moz- Art showed a huge variety of original pieces. Lin is not afraid to use colour, pattern and texture and all her pieces are one-off works of art that appeal to a range of women and men. This is clothing you don’t see everyday. Lin brings something fresh and artistic to fashion while still remaining current. Her new slouchy pants made with her signature look of combining interesting fabric were a hit.
Moko showed their varied range
of t-shirt designs for men, women and children. Their striking designs are creative, clever and playful. The male models were particularly entertaining and the evening was full of laughter and good cheer.
It was obvious that much work and
effort had gone into making the event happen despite the gloomy night of weather it was. It’s nights like these when locals band together and produce something magnificent that you feel blessed to live in Raglan. J. K

Whaingaroa Environment Centre presents...
thanks to Trust Waikato and our local enviromatters sponsors...
Want to know more about warmer energy-efficient homes, saving water (and $$), Maui's Dolphins, composting, gardening... Come visit us at the Town Hall!
This winter, the Whaingaroa Environment Centre will be challenging the Raglan community to dramatically reduce their plastic waste. Plastic Free July is an international initiative that asks people to pledge not to buy single use plastic for all or part of the month of July. Participants have a choice to avoid ‘the top four’ (straws, coffee cup lids, plastic bottles, and plastic shopping bags) or all single use plastic. Those that take part in the Raglan challenge are also invited to get sponsorship in order to raise money for the Karioi Ki Te Moana Biodiversity Restoration Project’s Oi (Grey Faced Petrel) conservation programme.
Plastic is a serious environmental issue, because while it can break down into small pieces, it cannot biodegrade. Every piece of plastic ever produced still exists somewhere in the world. With 225 millions tonnes of plastic produced worldwide every year, this is real cause for concern. Unfortunately, despite many people’s best efforts to recycle or dispose of their plastic responsibly, a large proportion ends up our in soil, waterways and oceans, where it can leach chemicals and enter the food chain.
Your logo here? Sponsors needed!
Each year enough plastic ends up in our oceans to kill 100,000 mammals and 1,000,000 sea birds. The pollution is so extensive, that plastic pieces outnumber sea life by a ratio of 6 to 1.
Merren Tait, who is championing the Plastic Free July challenge, has decided to take things a step further for herself in order to highlight just how much plastic waste the average person produces. She won’t be purchasing any plastic at all for a whole year. Merren expects the year to be pretty tough, as there isn’t a lot of plastic-free choice for most products, but she is confident that the experience will help her to give guidance to others. She says, “My biggest hope is that through this exercise I can get people to reflect on their plastic use and hopefully change their behavior as consumers”. Merren has set up the blog www.1yearnoplastic.blogspot.co.nz as a reference point for would-be plastic-free shoppers.

Seal doors and windows with draught tape. Don't buy too bulky, or you'll make more gaps! Caulking works too for windows that don't get opened.

Merren did a plastic purge, ridding herself of all these plastic prod-ucts which she could easily replace or do without.
But these plastic products could not be replaced, as well as Merren's fridge, washing machine, and stove. (And Merren wouldn't be happy without her bike)
Move your bed to an interior wall and out from underneath windows. It's cold there!
Make sure there's no gaps at the top. Otherwise, your window will be a cooling element in the room no matter how good your curtains are. Remedy this with a pelmat or floor-length curtains.
Invest a bit of time and money to seal off draughts in
your home.
Dry clothes outside or near and open win-dow. Dry air is easier to heat than damp air.
Make a draught excluder or buy a door snake from WEC.
