ANTIgUE RADIO CLASSIFIEDS1.11

EDITOR'S COMMENTSIn this issue, we present our special coverage of two

major collector events of 2C06 - the Antique RadioClub of Illinois (ARCI) Radiofest and the Antique Wire-less Association (AWA) Conference. As we lock backon these successes of the old year, the beginning of anew year prompts us to look ahead with confidence intne survival of this avocation of ours. The longevity ofsuch events gives us hope for 2007 and beyond. Afterall, they are basic to achieving our common goal - thepreservation of antique radios.

Though there is a definite overlap in coverage bythese two events, AWA draws largely from the easterntwo-thirds of the U. S., plus foreign collectors, whileRadiofest attracts collectors from the western two-thirds of the country. Both events have recognized thechanging times and have shifted their opening dayfrom Wednesday to Thursday, making the schedulesomewhat easier for work and travel arrangements. Both continue to have outstanding contests. seminars, flea markets. and banquets.

Over the past five years, Radiofest has been partic-ularly adaptable to change, even moving its venue. The real key to its success is the fact that its fleamarket is open to everyone, not just to club members. What better way to encourage new interest and newmembership?

The Radiofest flea market offers the general publicthe opportunity to shop and view what our rad o worldis all about. This year, many visitors took advantage offree appraisals and were impressed by the specialevent operation of Amateur radio station AR9CI. And*.o encourage the next generation of collectors, Ra-diofest welcomed about 30 Boy Scouts who earnedmerit badges in "Radio" and "Collections."

Another major difference between Radiofest andAWA is the size of the auction. The Radiofest auctionnas diminished in importance over the years. Howev-er, its donation auction is a hit event, and a nice plus forthe club's coffers.

On the other hand. AWA's auction is still very signif-icant, and this year it was conducted by auctioneerRichard Estes. Some highlights were a DeForest spher-ical Audion selling at $1,100. a WE 4D receiver at$1,950, and a Grebe RORD detector/amplifier at$1,400. Total proceeds were approximately $38,000.

At first glance, the price of a Hallicrafters SX-115selling at $1,800 might be considered out of line. How-ever, the set sold originally in the early 1960s at apremium price of $600 - one of Hallicrafters "lasthurrahs," according to reporter Ray Chase. Consider-ing that a near mint SX-115 doesn't appear on theblock very often, we have to conclude that rie pricewasn't too far off the mark.

Although the AWA Conference is still the largestmeet in the country. unfortunately, it is close -o losingthat status. In 2006, registered attendees totaled only400, down from 981 in 2001. As an example of what's

happening at other meets around the country, the paidattendance at the February 2006, one -day Radio XXX-VII in Westord, Massachusetts, was 453 - includingfamily members, the total attendance was 725.

AWA's attendance has dropped, largely, we con-tend, because the conference is open only to mem-bers. Unforunately, "walk-ins" are required to join AWAfor $20, in addition to paying the $29 conference fee, even though they may only want to walk around theflea market. These charges are a serious disincentiveto the person with a casual .nterest in radio who couldpotentially turn into a real radio aficionado.

Of course, in addition tc the auction, there is stillmuch to enjoy at AWA - the wonderful contest en-tries, the presentations by members who are "gifted inhistorical knowledge," as Ray Chase puts it, and thecamaraderie. Unfortunately. I was unable to attend thisyear, a rare happening for me, but A.R.C. was repre-sented by Bobby Lyman at our booth, and we're grate-ful to Ray Chase for his detailed report.

Several interesting items are pictured in Photo Re-view this month. The two speakers are unusual in thatthe Franklin is made of carved wood, while the Majes-tic is made of celluloid. The Casa Montes crystal set isunusual in more ways than one, not the least of whichis that it was manufactured in Spain. But surely of allthe items on these pages, the "Little Squirt" crystal settakes the prize.

One of the great things about antique radio collec-tors is the4 willingness to share information. RadioMiscellanea includes tips about restoration and sourc-es of covered wire, as well as the availability of a GEvideo with TV emphasis. And once again we're remind-ed by reacers of the need to watch out for fraud. Asmore and more people have access to e-mail, thedanger of being victimized increases.

A.R.C. Benefits. Be sure to take advantage of A.R.C.benefits: a toll -free number (866) 371-0512; Discover,MasterCard, American Exoress, Visa accepted; theWeb, www.antiqueradio.com; books shipped free in theU. Coming Radio Events. Reading about the wonder-ful events in this issue should get you moving to atleast one of the 37 listed in this month's calendar.Joining in the good times at these events should startyour new year right.

Antique Radio Club of IllinoisRadiofest XXV - August 3-5, 2006

The Antique Radio Club of Illi-nois (ARCI) held its annual Ra-diofest meet beginning ThursdayAugust 3. 2006. at the HolidayInn of Bolingbrook. Illinois. Thehotel is conveniently locatedabout 30 miles southwest of Chi-cago's O'Hare airport on Rem-ington Road near the intersec-tion of Illinois routes 55 and 53with easy access from the metroChicago area and suburbs.

A number of recommendationsfrom last year were implementedincluding a more centrally locat-ed hospitality tent, improved sig-nage and better layout of the fleamarket area to improve the trafficflow. These and other improve-ments made this year's eventmuch more comfortable.

Radiofest officially started onThursday afternoon with prereg-istration from 4 to 6 P.M. New this year was an open-ing party held outside on the grass near the hotel poolat 7 P.M. Approximately 70 people attended the part'and were treated to free hors d'oeuvres and a cas:ibar. Everyone had a great time meeting and get ng

Registration was available be-ginning at 7 A.M. with Julia Bartand Judy Huether greeting sell-ers. The hospitality tent alsoopened at 7 A.M. hosted againthis year by Janet and JackLaVelle. Cold drinks, chips, someof Janet's homemade cookies, and a shady place to sit downwere available, all for a goodwilldonation. For lunch the hotelserved hot dogs, burgers, friesand side dishes under the tent.

The special event Amateur sta-tion AR9CI, coordinated by JimNovak, WA9FIH, began opera-tion at 8 A.M. The station used allclassic tube type equipment gen-erously loaned for the occasionby Dale Svetanoff WA9ENA.Dale, along with Chris Farley,KC9IEQ and Ed Schumacher,WA9GQK, took turns operating. They made 32 contacts and spe-cial event QSL cards will be sent.

George Wilder did free radioappraisals again this year. Theappraisal booth is a walk-up ser-vice for anyone who would like toknow what a particular radio isapproximately worth. This year 29appraisals were done. We werevery happy to have about 30 BoyScouts participate again this year- twice the number we had lastyear. Merit badges in "Radio" and"Collections" were earned.

Chuck Schwark, assisted byToni Blesy and Mike Bart, con-ducted the Radiof est antiqueequipment contest. There were30 entries this year in the follow-ing categories: Commemorative.Character, Planes -Trains -Auto-mobiles, Military, Pre -1930s, Ca-thedral. Tombstone. Transistor,Hidden, Speakers and Open.

An all day series of excellentone -hour programs began at 9P.M. John Bart assisted the pre-sentations by providing technicalsupport for the computer -basedmultimedia system. Attendeesrumbered 35 to 50 at the discus-sions on four interesting topics.

Opening the day, Felicia Kreu-zer and her son James present-ed a slide show about their col-lection of very early Marconi wire-less equipment. Felicia and herhusband Jim have a museumquality collection of Marconi wire-less transmitters and receivers. She explained how and wherepieces were acquired and relat-ed amusing anecdotes about find-ing and transporting rare and un-usual old wireless gear.

Because of the Kreuzer's Mar-coni knowledge, the Titanic Mu-seum in Branson. Missouri. con-tacted them for help. The facility,

I then under construction, is a halfscale reproduction of the famousTitanic ocean liner anchored inwater to create the illusion of be-ing at sea. For a historically ac-curate display, the museumsought to acquire genuine Mar-coni wireless equipment identi-

Charlie Stinger hosted a fascinating presenta-tion about entrepreneur and businessman PowelCrosley. Jr. Charlie is a retired engineer who workedat Crosley radio station WLW. He told the historyof Powel Crosley's growing up, his first business-es, and his fascination with anything automotive.

Crosley's business interest was drawn to therapidly growing radio parts and manufacturing busi-ness. Radio station WLW followed in order toserve the market for radios. Charlie explained howWLW initially went on the air with a makeshift 50 -watt transmitter. Always wanting more power, Cros-ley upgraded the transmitter several times, reach-ing 50 kilowatts in 1928. He petitioned the govern-ment and received permission to upgrade WLW to500 kilowatt operation. With this goal reached, hecontracted RCA to design and build the world'slargest transmitter.

Using numerous original photographs, Charliediscussed the construction of the transmitter anderection of the huge WLW broadcasting tower,

Charlielisted a number of interference problems it causedas far away as Canada. The 500 KW transmitterremained in regular service until March 1, 1939,when the semiannual renewal for the high powerpermit was denied. WLW and all other broadcast-ing stations were henceforth limited to 50 kilowattsby law.

Noted Zenith enthusiasts Alan Jesperson ofGreat Northern Antiques and Frank Rasada host-ed a history of the Zenith Radio Company. A rareZenith promotional film produced in the late 1920sshowed the construction of a Zenith console radio.Beginning with the raw materials coming into thefactory. everything involved with the constructionwas shown. The various departments all contribut-ed to the manufacturing of electronic components, punching chassis parts, assembly line construc-tion of the chassis, cabinetmaking and finally align-ment and crating. Alan and Frank continued withthe history of Zenith and the company's majoraccomplishments.

For the final presentation, Marc Ellis explainedthe early spark gap days of Amateur radio around1910. He related the story of how Hiram Maximand Clarence Tuska founded the American RadioRelay League. He described and compared thebasic vacuum tube oscillator circuits, such as theHartley, Colpitts, Tuned Plate -Tuned Grid andTuned Plate-Untuned Grid.

Marc explained that low power, one -tube Ama-teur radio transmitters using these circuits are builttoday using only parts and tubes that were avail-able in the late 1920s. These transmitters are usedin low power DX (long distance) Amateur radiocontests. He displayed several samples to illus-trate how assembly is done essentially in the sameway as it would have been in 1930 using hand -wound coils and the old breadboard style con-struction.

At noon Janet LaVelle again hosted the very

=.' RADIO MISCELLANEA,"Radio Miscellanea includes items of genera. interest selected from A.R C. s incoming corresJondence. "In TheMarketplace" items are based on information submitted by the businesses themselves. -From The Internet" items areobtained from Internet newsgroups and other internet resources. Submitted items should be verified for accuracy:items may be edited by A.R.C. for publication. and publication is not guaranteed. See the masthead for more details.

Be Aware of "Scammers"Dear Editor:I'm still getting e -mails relating to my ads in A R.C. up

to and over six months old from crooks who wary to senda bad check for too much money. They then suggestthat I take money out of this payment for my item andsend the balance to them ASAP via Western UnionMoney order. I surely wish these guys would get a joblike the rest of us.

Iry Sanders. Harrisburg. PA

Dear Editor:I was pleased to see the notice about third party

checks and wire transfers that you run occasionally withyour Editor's Comments.

I'm considering not putting my e-mail address in futureads because it seems to generate a lot of garbage. WhenI do reply to foreign inquiries and explain that shippingcosts will likely exceed the price of the merchandise (plustaxes and customs fees). and also the item will not workthere because of voltage and frequency differences, it

seems not to register with most of these so-called -buyers.-Many are also acting as a "broker" for a second

buyer. Most also want to arrange inspection and pick-upthrough someone else or a cartage company. Somewant me to pay this out of the extra money on the check, and one even generously offered to wire transfer themoney directly to my bank account. All he needed wasthe bank account number to do this!

So far, in three month's worth of "For Sale" ads, I'vehad quite a few e-mail replies, but most were just fishingexpeditions looking for a lower price. While I can't proveit, many of these were probably fraudulent. Whenever Istarted to question these so-called eager 'buyers" tooclosely, I would stop hearing from them.

Please continue to alert your readers frequently toanyone who seems too eager to buy something withoutknowing much about it and who wants is arrange"creative" shipping and financing. This alert would applyespecially to inquiries from any foreign country.

Keep up the good work with A.R.C. I have bought andsold many things through A.R.C. with no proolem.

Richard Flaws, Oswego, IL

Here is the statement that we occasionally run withthe Editor's Comments:

PRINTED WITHOUT COMMENT: We continue toreceive reports from advertisers of e-mail responses totheir classified ads proposing to pay them with a check, sometimes via a third party, in excess of the purchaseprice. The seller is asked to refund the difference bywire. In more than one case reported to A.R.C., thecheck received was "bad."

To minimize problems, we suggest that you alwaysknow whom you are dealing with or ask for references.(Editor)

Buffing Wheel Cleans Dial CoverDear Ecitor:In restoring a Zenith 6D525 wooden table radio, I was

able to use a cloth buffing wheel anti jeweler's rouge topolish the 4 -inch square plastic dial cover to a very clear, acceptable condition. All of the haziness and a good bitof the yellow were removed.

The buffing wheel was mounted in a low speed drillpress, the wheel was dressed with rouge, and the dialcover (removed from the cabinet) was pressed lightlyagainst the rotating wheel. Most of the hazing was onthe outside surface, but both inside and outside shouldbe buffed.

Use both hands to hold the plastic cover, and do notpress too hard or the spinning wheel will "catch" the dialcover and throw it across the room! Always wear safetyglasses. II the plastic is cracked, deeply scratched.pitted, or discolored beyond buffing. then a replacementfrom any of the sources in A.R.C. can be obtained atreasonable cost.

Since tne buffed plastic is still very slightly yellow, itmatches the well-worn cabinet and the two aged. origi-nal, miniature, white plastic "Z" knobs. Also, it does notscream. "new part. new part."

MEET AND AUCTION REPORT

Antique Wireless AssociationConference and Auction Report

Rochester, New York - August 23-26, 2006REPORTED BY RAY CHASE

The 45th AWA conference washeld August 23-26, 2006. at theRIT Conference Center. Roch-ester, New York, as it had beenfor many years. However, a dif-ferent schedule was in effect. Theflea market opening was movedto Thursday. and the auction washeld on Saturday with programson Thursday and Friday. Never-theless. on Wednesday evening, one program was held and fleamarket setup was allowed. Sell-ing was prohibited until Thurs-day, but this rule was not en-forced, and selling did take placeduring the Wednesday setup.

Thursday, the opening day ofthe flea market, was blessed withexcellent weather. but the fleamarket area was further reducedfrom last year and there weremany spaces unoccupied. Still, the action onThursday morning was brisk, and some goodgear changed hands.

The Thursday morning lecture by Bengt Sven -son on his new book was very well attended. Asellout at the auction. the book is about early 20thcentury engineer Ernst Alexanderson and his im-portant work on the development of telegraphy, telephony, radio and television.

There were two full days of programs on Thurs-

day and Friday and most of them were exception-ally good and well attended. Fortunately. AWAhas a membership gifted in historical knowledgeand a willingness to put together presentationsthat enlighten and entertain the rest of us. A lot ofeffort goes into creating this exchange of infor-mation. and that makes the conference well worthattending.

Thursday evening was rainy, and Friday morn-ing was gloomy and cloudy with light intermittent

Opening day for the flea market was Thursday, and the weather was excellent, as this photo shows..

rain. Nevertheless, in the fleamarket, a few vendors openedfor business at around 7:00 A.M.The weather cleared for a littlebit, and it appeared that the fleamarket might be busy again, butat 10:00 A.M., the rain camedown, and that killed any furtherflea market activity for the meet. The hope may have been thatthe market could be sustainedthrough Saturday, but the weath-er caused many sellers to packup for home on Friday.

The contest theme this yearwas Military Radio, and therewere some outstanding entries, along with others in the rest ofthe usual categories. I expectedmore entries in the military cate-gory, but perhaps the size andheft of some of the military equip-ment held some people back.On Thursday, there were a cou-ple of enthusiasts with some op-erating World War II field com-munications rigs set up at therear of the flea market. Nonetheless, the contest entries wereexcellent and well worth the tripto the conference to see them

Member Peter Yanczer neve, ceases to amaze us with hismechanical abilities. In additionto his previously shown workingmechanical TV that was operat-ing in the contest (see also theauction report), Peter had fabri-cated from scratch a "Radio LoveMessage" arcade machine thatactually dispensed a printedmessage upon deposit of a coin.Peter had seen such a machinein a museum some years agoand was so captivated by it thatwhen he could not find one topurchase, he decided to make areplica himself. This was truly alabor of love and an outstandingpiece of work.

THE AUCTION

The auction was moved toSaturday with no separate salesof tubes on the previous evening. The start was moved back to8:30 A.M., and the auctioneer wasRichard Estes, assisted by hisbrother John, along with BobDobush to handle the tube sales.Estes Auctions brought a newlevel of professionalism to thesale. Overall, there were 380 lotsentered and the total sale pro-ceeds were about $38,000,which is down from last year and

on a par with 2004. Only 328 ofthe 380 lots were sold due to failure to meet seller reserves. Theauction concluded at 2:50 P.M.

An interesting note is that Pe-ter Yanczer had entered his 60 -line, mechanical mirror, screwTV complete operating systemin the auction with a $20,00Creserve. Considering the workthat went into it this was anamazing bargain for some mu-seum but there were no takers.Peter did offer two prototype mir-ror screw assemblies, one ofwhich sold for $200.

Overall, the conference wasenjoyable, and the shorter sched-uling did cut expenses a little. This is the meet where you stillsee old friendly faces that youdon't see anywhere else. Re-unions and socialization domi-nate in a venue that is clean andcomfortable. The house restau-rant offers an informal casual at-mosphere with good food. andan indoor/outdoor pool and exer-cise room give attendees optionswhen they hit radio overload.

Still, the trend in attendancecontinues on a downward spiral

attendees. Some of the priorproblems with this venue haveresolved themselves simply byvirtue of the reduced participa-tion (lack of parking, need forshuttle buses etc.). One attend-ee reported on the Internet thathe had "a great time and can'twait until next year." Plans forthe 2007 conference indicate thatit will be at the same place at thesame time of year.

Estes Auctions will offer these superb pieces along with theGerald Windau radio collection. The Zenith Stratosphere is aModel 16A61, a rare and very beautiful radio. These radios werebuilt at a time when the radio would be the centerpiece of theowner's living room so style and looks were so very important. The timing for introduction of the Stratosphere was bad as theDepression -era economy meant the Stratosphere would not be abig seller due to price so very few exist today. Make your plans toown this one. The McIntosh amplifier is the rare Anniversary GoldModel 275 amplifier. There were only 50 of these made, and theare very beautiful pieces of equipment.
