WKAr’s missioNWe connect people to power-ful ideas that inspire personal growth, exploration of our world, and positive change.

Cindy Herfindahl Retires from WKARCindy Herfindahl, WKAR’s development director for the past eight years (and 28 years at MSU and WKAR in total), is retiring at the end of June. Cindy is known to WKAR viewers and listeners for her appearances during our on-air membership campaigns and to many others, particularly members of Sound Vision Society, Legacy Society and those who have given endowments to WKAR.

Cindy first came to WKAR in 1983 as the Director of the Radio Reading Service (then known as Radio Talking Book.) Af-ter serving in that role for four years, she left WKAR to join the Office of Planned Giving at MSU in 1987 and returned in 2001 as part of the development team – first in special gifts, then with corporate development/major gifts and, in 2004, became the stations’ development director. Cindy has worked with many WKAR donors over the years document-ing millions in planned gifts and cash gifts, all for the benefit of WKAR!

Cindy’s involvement in the community has been strong (fans of MSU’s home-coming parade may have seen her riding tandems in the parade with her husband, John Melcher, and friends!). She played a key role in WKAR’s com-munity conversations and has been a presence at station events including Fall Preview and local festivals.

Cindy may be retiring from WKAR, but she’s anything but a “retiring” person! She plans to explore her interests in cross-cultural and experiential learning and combine that with her fundraising expertise to help local and international organizations.

Congratulations, Cindy – we’ll miss you!

Your Support Helps! Each June, WKAR-TV asks its viewers to make their annual financial contribution to help support programming at the station. The health conscious will find The Blood Sugar Solution and Kathy Smith’s Ageless Energy interesting new offerings.

Phantom of the Opera fansmay find Andrew Lloyd Web-ber’s sequel, Love NeverDies, equally dazzling. Mean-while, fans of Alfie Boe, who starred in Les Miserables in Concert, will enjoy his solo performance at Royal Albert Hall, during which he offers a number of Broadway show favorites.

Music continues with a retro-spective of The British Beat, a new performance by Josh Groban and the first show in the Infinity Hall Live series. We’ll also have lots of encore specials! Look for these and more on WKAR, WKAR World and WKAR Create.

Queen Victoria’s EmpireTuesday, June 19 and 26, at 8 p.m.Queen Victoria came to the throne as a very young woman and held the longest reign in Britain’s history. During that time, she experienced the impact of the industrial revolution, the expansion of the British Empire and war in the Crimea. She had strong relationships with her prime ministers, Benjamin Disraeli and William Gladstone, and her relationship with her husband, Prince Albert, was legendary. This four-hour series highlights these events and more.

American MastersFriday, June 22, 9 p.m.Judy Garland had one of the most photographed faces ever to come out of Hollywood. She also had one of the most frequently recorded voices of the last century. She is as iconic as she is misunderstood. With clips from the MGM library, including vaulted screen tests and rehearsal footage, this film is wrapped in Garland’s voice, telling her story in her own words. Judy gets center stage, all to herself, in her ultimate comeback.

Like most American kids, Susi Elkins grew up watchingSesame Street. She remembers coming home from school and eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich

with a glass of milk while watching her favorite show. Little did she know that one day she would be working alongside the children’s characters of Sesame Street and other programs that help define public television.

Susi grew up with her two older brothers and her parents in Fenton, Michigan, and spent her first two years of college at Central Michigan Uni-versity. Her first interaction with a camera was working as the only female on the set of a college comedy production with some friends. At the time, Susi was much more comfortable behind the camera, but that’s changed.

“Now, when I’m looking into the camera, I pretend I’m talking to someone I know and I’m picturing real people—people that I know love the station and love what we’re doing—that’s really comforting to me.”

Susi has always been extremely curious and loves learning new things. That’s what led her into the field of public broadcasting. When she saw the potential of what public broadcasting offers the community, she knew this was the path for her.

Meet Susi ElkinsWKAR-TV Station Manager

“I could learn about anything, we could do a show about anything and teach people all kinds of things and make them laugh or make them more curious about the world. That’s when I realized ‘this is something huge—on a grand scale—that I could really reach people with.’”

Susi Elkins

Susi worked with kids from throughout the community

at WKAR’s “Imagine, Create & Play” video game

workshop in February.

Page 5: Radio & TV Program Guide June12mediad.publicbroadcasting.net/p/wkar/files/201205/staytuned-2012-… · a new performance by Josh Groban and the first show in the Infinity Hall Live

While still a student at CMU, Susi was visiting a friend at Michigan State University and met Bill Kinney, now WKAR’s television operations manager, who mentioned a potential opportunity for Susi to work at the station. She transferred to Michigan State and started working for WKAR as a student.

After graduating from MSU in 1995 with a telecommunications degree, Susi moved to Chicago, working in 24-hour news. She stayed in touch with her friends at WKAR and when Kinney mentioned a position opening up, Susi was eager to return to what she loves. She’s been with WKAR ever since.

Connecting with Our CommunityWKAR caters to its audience. Listener and viewer feedback is strongly en-couraged and is always taken into consideration with programming. WKAR is supported in large part by its viewers and provides programming for a diverse audience. “We have a strong foundation in national PBS programming, but our true strength is in connecting with our community through creating local con-tent that reflects the passions, concerns and desires that are unique to our region. We are dedicated to increasing our local content and we’re doing it in creative ways—through partnerships with local media outlets, indepen-dent producers and through our connection to MSU and the College of Communication of Arts and Sciences. “One example of this is a new local program that began airing in May, called LRN 101, produced by Such Video in conjunction with the Keep Learninginitiative. It features local businesses and projects that encourage a commit-ment to a lifetime of education for both young and old. Another example is WKAR’s partnership with East Lansing’s Hannah Community Center, which will be the new venue for recording BackStage Pass later this month. Tapings are free and open to the community.WKAR is an integral part of the mid-Michigan community and an active partner with a number of community organizations related to children, the arts and health.“There’s no other media that’s tied to our community as we are. Our free educational workshops for families often provide children with the first book they’ve ever owned,” she says. “I love it when people stop me to tell me what they watched last night or last week and how much they loved it. Either they learned something that amazed them or they were moved to tears by something that touched them or inspired them. It’s surprising how often this happens - and it’s then that I know I’m doing something special.”Susi met her husband Tim, a multi-media producer with Instructional Video Services, at WKAR. They live in Lansing with their two children: Alex, 8 and Amelia, 11. Susi received her Master’s from MSU in Educa-tional Technology in 2005.

“I love that every day is different. There is always a new program or project to get excited about. And I love that I get to work with such a passionate and creative group of people and that our efforts make a difference in the lives of so many people.”

The Radio Reader Revisits TitanicThe Radio Reader | Weekdays, 8:30 a.m., AM 870

Most adults are familiar with the sinking of the great Titanic in 1912, and certainly with the 100th anniversary this year, many have seen fictional movies or intriguing documentaries tell-

ing the story of the legendary ship that sank on a cold April night in the North Atlantic. Dick Estell offers Voyagers of the Titanic on The Radio Reader, beginning Thursday, June 14. The book is written by Richard Davenport-Hines.Many accounts of the Titanic’s voyage focus on the technical or mech-anical aspects of why the ship sank, but Davenport-Hines follows the stories of the men, women, and children from a variety of social classes whose lives intersected on the vessel's fateful last day. He covers the full range of first-, second-, and third-class passengers, from plutocrats and captains of industry to cobblers and tailors looking for a better life in America. As he does so, he delves into the fascinating lives of those who ate, drank, reveled, dreamed, and died aboard the ship and in the frigid waters of the North Atlantic. The Radio Reader can be heard weekdays at 8:30 a.m. on AM870 and on the AM870 stream at WKAR.org. Prior to beginning Voyagers of the Titanic, Estell will finish Nina Burleigh’s look at Amanda Knox in The Fatal Gift of Beauty.
