Outside is full of unpredictable things. However you wouldnt stop going out.

In Jack Londons the call of the wild, a dog named Buck, who is at firstdomesticated, goes out for a long journey as a sled dog. He protects his owner, fights withother dogs and eventually becomesthe leader of the wild.

What of outside are we attracted by?We had interviews with three figures to get a hint.

You, who prefer to be in your house when on holiday. Go outside now.

    zineNatureza, Luz, Homem

    http://cargocollective.com/cdcpinto/

Born in Porto, Portugal. Photographer. 34 years old. His original occupa-tion is geologist. His works, which takes advantage of the soft sunlight that encompasses natural landscape, like beach and forest, will warm your heart. Now he lives in London. His first solo zine Natureza, Luz, Homem was published out in this year from an independent publisher in Spain.

First of all, is that right that your occupation is geologist, not a photographer?Yes, that is right, I am a geologist. I am also a self-taught film photographer; it is my passion and really like the whole technical and creative process that photography involves.

Where are you living now?I recently moved from Portugal to UK, am living in Southwest London.

Tell me your biography as a photographer. In the recent years Ive been publishing my work in several on line photography websites, I also gave some interviews. My work was ex-hibit on a gallery in Bologna (I would like to exhibit more).

I have done printed work as well: I made a zine in 2012 called Shoreline with a friend, and in this year (2013) an independent pub-lisher printed my first solo zine called Natureza, Luz, Homem and is doing well.

Just finish a project with a UK-based artist of a new magazine / publication featuring photography work of some European artists regarding a theme, called Adventitious which I was co-editor and art-ist for this volume 1. I am will also finishing co-editing a new book with a Belgium curator called Peninsula, some of my photos will be featured as well. Some of my photos were also featured in No Thoughts 8 and Incandescent issue 2.

So, I think Ive been quite active in the last two years, featuring my work in on-line and printed publications, but not so much in exhibitions, but perhaps next year I will do one exhibition.

Tell me when you first got your own camera.I got my own camera when my parents gave me a very simple point and shoot Kodak 335. I was around 12 years old at the time. That camera worked until 2011! Some of my favorite photos were shot with that camera.

What is the reason you still like cameras?I love film cameras and I only shoot film. There is an interesting essence embedded in ana-logue. I am very enthusiastic about experiment-ing and trying out new things with film. Among other things, I shoot with expired film, do mul-tiple expositions on one or different cameras, and take photos with films of various sizes like 35mm, 120, slide. The results are often unex-pected and spectacular. Or sometimes simply wasted rolls.

Tell me your favorite photo in your works. It is difficult to say one favorite photo. I like the different features of several photos. I have one photo that is dear to me; it was my first artis-tic photo. I was 16 at that time; it is a very simple B & W photo with a part of a tree in the beach.

When I look at your works, I got impression that there's something opened in the photos, that is not closed, locked or bound. Have you thought like that when taking pictures? It is an interesting insight But I try not to think too much about my photos or even when I shoot them, I leave the interpretation to the viewers, so they can bring their own associa-tions in. But I like to get feedback from people.

What do you think of the difference between people in the nature from people in man-made things? It is different the perception you get as a specta-tor. I can give two examples. When you see a photo of someone in the streets you have all sorts of references (buildings, cars, clothes, and so on) in the other hand you get few references from someone who is alone in the middle a for-est (could be anyone in anywhere) That is most appealing for me.

Which circumstance do you like, a place you get much perception or a place you get few, when you want to create something?Landscape photography attracts me the most, but not exclusively. Most of my work and what appeals me the most is the relationship be-tween nature, light (natural) and man.

A photo of a man as a single individual (alone) in a specific space (city or natural landscape) can arise several questions, in my opinion; the most important questions that a photo might arise will come if the man is a natural landscape. We can focus in what is really happening rather than what kind of things are surrounding.

I guess you often make experiment with the use of sunlight. Cant it be a fluorescent light in-stead of sunlight? It cant be artificial. Makes no sense, in my work to use artificial light in a natural environ-ment. It is like going to the jungle and put make up in the animals. The natural light is so frail and beautiful I want to embrace that beauty rather than dismiss it.

It looks you take so many pictures with different effects, sizes and perspectives at one place.Everything changes. I try to capture this on film.

Sitting and reading a book in a house or stroll-ing outside without purpose. Which do you like? And why?Going outside. I spend too much time during the week in a closed space.

In the recent years its been said that many Japanese in their 10s and 30s prefer to be inside the house, watch tv there and play video-games all the day. What do you think of this kind of lifestyle?Dont know much about Japanese contempo-rary lifestyle, I never been to Japan (which I found most fascinating country in several as-pects). Each country has its own culture and a particular way of living. I am not the best per-son to say what is right or wrong.

What would you say to them if you met them? But I can tell you what I have been thinking in the last couple of years (which is nothing very new): The modern way of living, in the whole world, relies too much on technology and we are addicted to it. We should all try to go back to basics: disconnect the endless equipments we own and connect to nature, family and friends.

How does the space of outside work for your mental? It is a very relaxing and easy going process. I am usually at nice places, out of the urban areas, so in this relaxed state of mind I tend to focus what is interesting for me as a person and re-cord in film.

I can see who is your your wife. It must be a woman who is often in your photos. Is there any reason to take a picture including her?I needed a person to include in my photos and usually she is with me, so I started to take pho-tos with her, and it works. She is very natural and most of the times she does not even know I am including her.

The last and simple(but difficult) question. What do you think is the space of outside for us?It is where we belong. We are animals, we tend to forget that. We have the body covered by hair for some reason and that is for going and ad-venture in the nature.

Nature is necessary for Carlos Pinto, a photographer. You can see his respect and fear for nature in his work on sunlight, forest and beach. How does the space of outside work in the process of shooting for him?

    20092013

    RINGOOO A GO-GO

An outdoor music festival held every year at Alps park in Matsumoto city, Nagano. It started in 2009 on the purpose of revitalization of the town and its music scene. In this year it's planned to be held in September. A live music event including audition for amateur musicians RINGOOO A GO-GO, which started in this year as a new initiative, is being taken place in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Hokkaido.

Could you tell me about the Kawara Record, which is the parent body of the festival, before talking about Ringo music festival? In 2004, I used to hang out with a friend very often who is a guy I met at a class of a University. At that time, we decided to rent a space as a gathering place because there is too small space to gather at someones house, and we did not have much money to spent if we go out to some-where every time. Then a professor of the class introduced a property, so we rent the room and started to share our time at the place.

About 6 months after we began to gather there, I started to run a record shop. Afterward, I came across a party Fantasia at Metro Kyoto while I joined many events. Until then, I thought this kind of culture is only for young generation, but the party gave me a shock and changed my mind into that the culture is permanent enjoy-ment. After a month, we remodeled our space, and started to hold events. This is the origin of the festival.

I respect the movement that making your own play place and making action by yourself. I went to the same university as you. And I thought the environment was boring at that time.So do I. That is one of the reasons why I started Kawara record. There was no interesting place, or place I want. So I made DJ circle, and held Ringo music festival.

What of the city do you think is great? First, the air is pure, the city is clean. The city has a lot of unique shops, and is surrounded by the rich nature and also well developed eco-nomically. Our shop is using the water through the well. You can even go to Tokyo and Nagoya in 2 hours.

How did you start Ringo festival? what is the details?Once I left Kawara record, I went to Alps park, which is the ground of Ringo music festival, when I came back from Tokyo to Matsumoto. At that moment, I felt that the place said, Have a party here!, so I held a party vigorously.

People around me opposed to my plan, but I do not know so much about it because that was first time for me. I could not take entrance fee

because it is public park. So after all, the first year of the festival became free on day time, and fee-charging at night by transferring to another party convention. Even I could not understand the situ-ation. As I did not know how much the expenses will be either, I badly failed on the first year.

As far as I can see the website of Kawara re-cord, I feel that as you to turn out at the spot by yourself, people adore you, and events and out-door festival are managed very well.I think I make information public a lot on web. I hope that as many people as possible feel, I do it likewise by watching my website. All I want to say is that even amateurs can do what-ever they want without knowledge, money and network if they try it for real. In fact, Kawara record have been run for 9 years in this year, but it actually began to shape from third or fourth year. I think people can see that they can make everything if they effort that much from the website. I do not mean I want to take pride. I just want people to think, Lets do it like-wise as many as possible. Isnt it great if one more similar event as Ringo music festival is held in the same town, Matsumoto? Like there are two festivals in one town which have abso-lutely different directivity.

Which do you prefer to? Outdoor music festival or indoor music festival. It depends. One-man live and club music sound better with the indoor, but big festival is better to be outside. I dont like big indoor music festivals.

What do you think is the difference between music you listen to inside a house from music you do outside?A sense of openness influences how the music sounds. Opened music mixes good with outdoor festivals. On the other hand Hip-Hop and Drum and Bass sounds better when its indoor events.

Even you want to live as one-man outside, you just would look lonesome.

I see. Is there any good influence to Kawara record after Ringo music festival was started?Of course. At first, fresh customers increase to come. Especially, people from Tokyo and other

place far from Matsumoto drop in the shop. Also, the bigger the event held by a shop local regular visitors frequents become, the more they are pleased, right?

What kind of music inspire you to do such ac-tions, Mr. Furukawa?I got into bands and unplugged after I began to run Kawara record. Also, taking advantage of Breakthrough party by DJ JIN, I started to listen to black music. ALEX FROM TOKYO came at the party as a guest once. I went there to listen to ALEXs four on the floor, but that was actu-ally black music party. So I got into black music from that. Therefore, I have been into party from Fantasia, put my eyes on the black music because of Breakthrough, and I am interested in all genre now.

At present, it seems like you call in only Japanese artists. Do you have any preference about it?It has big advantage to comunicate with them directly. I go Fuji soba and chat after the party with people who often hang out with. I create the festival with artists like that, and they edu-cate me a lot. I do not have image that they are the guests. I have an image like party which is created by everyone who join it. If I call in for-eign artists, they must be exactly guests.

By the way, the artists play in Ringo music festival enjoy the festival a lot. Dengaryu dived into the audience while the live of eastern youth. And he made them angry. Even though they do join gig next time. LOL

How is the future development?I already finished to redecorate Kawara record. You cant see that because it is your first time to visit, but the exterior was very old for this 9 years. cleaning exterior and adding sound pres-sure on the floor are going to be finished on this week. So I want to find someone to leave Kawara record to. Then, I can act more freely. I want to make second store of Kawara record at Okinawa as well. I often go there. I love the place.

Ringo music festival, which is held every year in Matsumoto city, Nagano, is going intothe fifth year. We take a trace of the organizer, Yosuke Furukawa, who also has his live house Kawara record, which takes root deeply in music fans.

    075-211-1610

A multi-brand shop made by the collaboration of THE NORTH FACE and PAPERSKY. The shop shares information about travel and proposes a chance to meet mystery of nature to people who want to travel.Address: 6F Fujii Daimaru, 605 Teianmaeno-cho, Shijyo, Teramachi-dori, Shimogyo-ku, KyotoTel: 075-211-1610

Its unusual that an outdoor brand and a maga-zine collaborate. Tell me how globe walker started, please? There was a plan to open a shop which focuses on travel. I got asked to do that when working in Fujii-Daimaru. I became in charge there and tried to collaborate with Lucas b.b, who was a editor in chief of PAPERSKY. I asked an offer to him because Id met him. And we got consen-sus soon. Now its been almost a year since I opened the shop.

Its also interesting that you dont only select travel goods but goods that related to local culture.Thank you. Certainly travel is a keyword here. But what I wanted to do is to make the shop loved by local people. We have Kyoto corner here and you can enjoy shopping works of art-ists from Kyoto as OKA SKATEBORDS, a skate-bord brand established by James Gibson, who lives in the city.

I dont advertise this shop that much. Im going to make the shop better little by little. If you get liked by local people, their warm wel-come is coming to you.

Where are you from? From Oita. After the high school, I went to Tokyo and graduated a university. Since then Ive been in the North Face.

What kind of job have you dedicated yourself to?Salesclerk 8 years in Harajuku, Tokyo. And shop owner 2 years in Kobe, Hyogo. After Kobe, I went back in Tokyo to make VMD team in the company. When I was said to go to Kobe I al-ways said Its only Tokyo which interests me, but Kobe was also great. I had a lot of friends there. But I was again said to go back to Tokyo within 2 years. It cant be helped.

The shop has many useful travel goods, like bookbinders and nail-scissors. I felt Oh, I wish I had this kind of goods when I traveled.I cant lay everything in a stock but Im trying to prepare more goods. Therere various ways of traveling that shouldnt be forced by someone. I select goods that make people who havent used them surprised by their facility.

If you set out on a real journey like 180

SOUTH, You have to be more stoic.Yeah, its not like that. I mean everyone can travel relaxing. And its such travel I want to suggest customers. Now we feature a city in the world every third month. The first one was San Francisco in USA. Its Aukland in New Zealand now. For example there is a fishing tackle shop named Just Another Fisherman. And we sell hats which is made by the shop. You seldom see them in other shops in Japan.

From May were going to pick up the Great Taste Trail, in which you can enjoy cycling and eating local food. We did it in New Zealand. Cycling around in the country, I made my own map by visiting many places and got informa-tion there. And Im going to distribute the map to customers. The next city in September is Kyoto. This is the first time that we pick up from cities in Japan. The theme is going to be from Kyoto.

Climbing up on a mountain, cycling, and walking are all enjoyment for us. We walked through Kumano-kodo with Lucas for ten days at the end of the last year. From the last year, he tried to walk around in Japan. For example reaching Kyoto via Tokaido.

It must take a long time.Right. We are supposed to go to Kumano-kodo this year. We met many people there. By trying a lot of route, We walked from Kyoto to Kumano-kodo.

Discoveries you got from the travel seem to help in many ways your daily activities. My boss and I talked people dont go out that much nowadays and they dont know things. when we got down to setting up the shop. By stepping out and having various experiences there you can know more about yourself. Not only meeting new people but coexisting with na-ture is also the brands concept. The more peo-ple enjoy things with the perspective of travel, the more exciting the society becomes. I think.

Lucas has been in Japan for about 15 years and we met when I was to start globewalker. His point of view as a foreigner is really inter-esting. I want to tell that to people.

You can see new discoveries by being with a man who loves Japan but, at the same time, has the neutral point of view.I attended a event named Tour De Nippona,

which was held by PAPERSKY. We run around Lake Biwa. We gathered at a place you wouldnt go to, got dinner made by a local farmer and had a talk with old people. That was a kind of event you can cycle around the Lake Biwa while doing things like them. Also for the local peo-ple, it was a kind of discovery that they knew how the people from other places see them.

Local things are often ordinary things for the people there. But this event made us notice good parts of our home.

True. I think more mobile the society becomes, the more interesting the society becomes.Oh yeah, Buckminster Fullers mobile tent is interesting. Since I started working, I felt I must study about him. Reading a lot of books about him, I got to know how he thought and how his idea influenced our brand.

Earth Whole Discipline of Stewart Brand, who is a author of Whole Earth Catalog, is also good. Its like a modern version of Whole Earth Catalog. It says about environmental problems. I read the book almost 2 years ago. The book had some parts I cant agree but it said also about nuclear power. He advocates nukes. I dont know whats right though...

Whats your future prospect?I want to make the shop offer a lot of experi-ences to customers by putting a proposal of ways of traveling and playing. One day I want to travel with customers. I want also to run a guesthouse if the management goes well.

Guest house is still unusual in Japan but it can be one of the places where new communities come up.I want to build guest houses in famous spots in Japan and welcome carious people there. Of course its also necessary to sell products. Visiting various guest houses and meeting various globe walkers, you can enjoy traveling. I want to meet many people by let them know the nature and the history. Actually I just want to enjoy traveling while working.

I think you dont need the border between a work and a private life. And Im thankful for the company that I dont need to separate them

THE NORTH FACE globewalker, a multi-brand shop concerned about travel was made byTHE NORTH FACE and in-flight magazine PAPERSKY. We had an interview with Genki Fujino (Goldwin), who started the shop and now is sharing new culture and philosophy with the customers.
