Each of the Latin stations in Miami has a decidedlm different music format~ Because of this, a correlation can be drawn between the music and the demographic the station appeals to.

WHTT Radio Hit plams a blend of current and recent adult oriented Latin contemporarm mosic. This includes all types which are researched to be' acceptable among the target 1O -g9 station demographic. This includes "baladas," which are international -sounding romantic, often message -oriented songs, mostlm bm soloists; "charanga," which is a modernization of traditional Cuban dance -beat music, "salsa," which is a Caribbean modern dance -beat music characterized bm a brassm sound; and "bolero'" which is the more traditional Latin romantic genre, plamed in a contemporarm manner. On NHTT' the mix of these musical tmpes insures found bm research to be the most important factor in reaching the target audience.

NQBA La Cobanisima has onlm 2 hours of music in the damtime, with another block in the evening hoors. The music plamed tends to be a mix of the more contemporarm "balada" and nostalgic music recorded in the fifties bm the old -tine guitar -strumming trios.

HRHC Cadena Azul plams no nosic^~,for it is an all talk, news, commentarm, discussion and information station.

WOU -FM Super Q programs to highl1 anglicized Latin mooth, loe principal music forms fit a pattern of 50% English -language disco cots, 35% dance -oriented "Salsa'" and 15% "Charanga" and occasional op -tempo "baladas." The music is almost all verm op tempo' warming more in genre than in beat.

"CMQ" plams mostlm oldies' with its on -air slogan of "pore gold." Some recent music is played, but in a low proportion. The station also plams album cots of artists who have been popular in the past. The overwhelming bulk of the music fits the "balada" form. A tmpical dam of monitoring might find less than 10 records that did not fit this category being plamed^

114OCh1 Ocean Radio, similar to WQBA, runs verm little mosic. In the seoments dedicated to music, a mixture of nostalgia and "balada" are plamed' with the 50's era music predominating. That music consists of the old trios singing romantic songs, and the cha cha cha, rhumba, and pachanga dance music of that decade.

FM -92 leaves the oldies to its AM sister station, The FM promotes constantlm the fact that them plam exclusive new music and plam records before anmone else. Them also plam a

significant number of album cuts bm artists that are correntlm programmed on the station. About 90% of the music is the "balada"

stmle, with one or two op tempo songs plamed each hour, mainlm after the newscasts.

RE: New data on Radio Hit growth.

Although we are all aware of the limitations and fluctuations inherent in the E,irch Report's measurement of the Latin Market, the March figures issued last week are most interesting.

Unlike a number of earlier reports, the combined share of all Latin stations is similar to that found by Arbitron. For Monday -Sunday, 6 AM -12 Midnight, it is 26.7X. Monday -Friday, 6 AM -7 PM showed 30.9%. Since the latter is the closest to the Fall '80 Arbitran figure of 32.31, it is interesting to look at some of the numbers in this time period.

In the March E:irch Report, which is a rolling average of February and March interviews, here is how Radio Hit fared (M -F 6A -7P):

DEMO SHARE PERSONS RANK -LATIN RANK -OVERALL COMMENTS

12+ 6.8 19,700 $2 #3 Tie with WRHC

M18-35 10.9 2,100 il #9 W18-34 9.6 4,800 #1 #4

M25-54 14.8 5,600 W25-59 7.2 3,600 #2 #3

Overall, WHTT's 6.8 share rants us amore Latin stations this way:

WOBA 9.2 #i

WHIT 6.8 #2

WRHC 6.8 #2

WOCN 3.3 #9

WOBA-FM 3.0 #5

WCM8-FM 1.1 #6

WCMO 0.2 #6

As you can see, WHIT is now tied for #2 in the Latin Market...but in the important younger demographics, it is showing to be the market leader!!!

Thank you very much for your letter of December 19th.

Your log of our programming is quite accurate. The clarity of your reception of our signal is remarkable, since we op- erate with 1000 watts of power, and during the pre -sunrise period when you heard us, we are on reduced power of 500 watts. A com- bination, no doubt, of atmospheric conditions and your elaborate equipment.

Dear =.:r. Geary:

We are indeed pleased to receiver reports on both times of reception of this station, namely October 9th between 3:55 qnd 4:00 A. LT. and October 18th, 1944.

As for the broadcast of th 9th can say definately you'are cor ect. Lut the one of the 18th was cheating on a broadcast on the CBS line which was carring music from Washin"ton. The numbers are probably correct, however I was not listening sinve was VERY BUSY getting the teletype in operatic and was not fully awake at that hour.

We had lots of bulletins and/of local and further down the coast to get in order so. the general public could ::repare for the conmiing of the blow.

RE: DX report

Your reception report dated April 13, 1981 is correct in all respects and is verified as correct for

reception of WHIT, Miami, Florida.

WHIT normally operates on a frequency of 1260 kHz with a power of 5,000 watts into a 5 -tower in -line

end -fired directional arrar, with separate patterns day and night (DA -2). Both patterns are essentially a

single lobe aimed at approximately 70 degrees, from our site 8 miles west of the Miami Airport and 16 miles

from downtown Miami,

Since Februars 9, WHIT has been operatining with a special temporary authorization from the FCC (STA)

to run with 1,000 watts non directional while our transmitter plant and phasor are being rebuilt. The

entire installation was destroyed in an arson -caused fire which took place that day,

Thus, at the time of your reception, WHIT was operating in a non -directional Mode, using the

easternmost tower of the directional system feed by a new Continental Power Rock transmitter running at

1,000 watts.

WHIT is a 24 hour Spanish language adult contemporary station serving the more than 850,000 Latins in

South Florida with music, news and community features.

Some promotional material is enclosed which further details the operation of Radio Hit.

Please excuse the delay in our confirmation of your report, the reason

We set our clocks to !'rDBO Orlando and there had been a local power failure

between sign off Sunday and the test, _onday morning and ¶DBO was off the

We received 71 letters, mostly from the midwest, east, and eastern

Canada. The fartherest reports were from California, however, most

reporting stations in California reported fair to bad reception. Ve received

oneireport from south of our station, Kingston, Jamacia. The strongest

signals were in Western Ne': York, Ohio, and St. Louis Tho. Good reports also

came from Nebraska, Huston, Texas, Iowa, i,.ichigan and Ontario Canada. Enclosed

you will find pamphlets from the C of C of both Kissimmee and St. Cloud

Dear Mr. Geary,

It indeed was a pleasure to have received your letter of November 14, 1989.

This shall confirm your reception report of WGUL/AM on 860 KiloHertz, on Monday morning November 13, 1989 from 4:00 to 5:10 a.m. EST.

WGUL/AM currently is operating NON -DA, with 375 watts into a single 280' tower, while installing a new Night and Day Directional System, whole day power will be 2000 watts, and night at 1500 watts using two DA patterns for three tower switchable.

WGUL is licensed to Dunedin, Florida and our transmitter is located in Safety Harbor, Florida, all of which make up the Tampa, St.Petersburg, Clearwater complex. WGUL/AM is controlled, operated and programmed from its studios in New Port Richey, Florida about 18 miles north.

We installed our new transmitter, a Harris Sx2.5A last July (all solid state), but are only running -using 375 watts, so we can make day proofs.

I sincerely hope this is the information your desire. Again, thank you for your DX report.

Thank you very much for your letter.

From the information within, it is quite clear that you were listening to

WHNZ at the time and date specified (3/2/92, 2:50-3:10 a.m.).

Last December, WHNZ was acquired by Paxson Broadcasting, which prompted the

call letter change from WTKN.

Our nighttime power is 10,000 watts under special authorization from the FCC

due to Cuban interference. Our primary lobe is 210°, which prompts many reports

from Cancun and the Mexican east coast as well as Guatemala. Reports from your

Best of luck and continued success in DXing!

Dear Mr. Geary:

Thank you very much for your reception report of February 19, 1952. Your report checks with our log for that date and

we are happy to confirm your entire schedual.

Most of the reception reports that we receive have been through the Pennsylvania and New York area. This seems rather odd, however it may be that the listening at that hour is not done in other sections of the country.

You may be interested in knowing that our continuity writer, Mrs. Dottie Smouse, is a native of Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

Dear Listener,

Our apologies for not responding sooner to the many reception reports that we have received reporting our new operation on the expanded standard broadcast band at 1700 Khi

Our engineering department has been quite pleased, but overwhelmed by the many DX reports that continue to come in from all over the globe! Our busy schedule has not permitted us to answer so many reports in a timely manner.

This letter is to confirm your reception of WCMQ-AM 1700 on the expanded band. WCMQ operates with 10,000 watts during daylight hours and 1,000 watts at night using a non -directional antenna system located just outside the city of Miami, Florida USA. We are using a new Harris DX -10, 10KW digital AM transmitter and broadcasting in C-Quam AM Stereo. The station operates 24 hours a day in Spanish, serving all of Southeast Florida (ground wave).

Thank you for your reception report and we hope you continue to enjoy listening to our station whenever the atmospheric skywave conditions allow.

Sincerely,

`,4-% Ralph Chambers Director of Engineering

Mr. Kermit Geary 1266 Riverview Drive Walnutport, Pa. 18088

Dear Kermit,

This letter is in response to your recent request for verification of reception of a most unusual circumstance in radio broadcasting.

The signal you received on 1550 KHz in Walnutport, Pennsylvania, is from WAMA-AM Radio. This station has been rebroadcasting our WUSA-FM "W-101" audio feed from just after 10 PM to 6 AM local time for several months with -out our permission!

WDAE-AM 1250 KHz and WUSA-FM "W-101" 100.7 MHz Radio Stations are owned and operated by Gannett Co., Inc. This organization and it's employees ( including myself ) have no connection to WAMA-AM 1550 Radio in any way.

I have contacted WAMA's Operations Manager, John Rodriguez, and WAMA's Chief Engineer, Arthur Karmgard about this problem on several occasions. They both tell me that they are aware of it and are working on a solution. They tell me that they believe their TFT remote control unit "glitches" and turns their transmitter back on and feeds the W-101 signal to it just after their 10 PM sign -off man switches everything off and goes home.

To conclude, I am confirming your reception of WUSA-FM radio programming as transmitted by WAMA-AM.

Incidentally, Our AM station, WDAE, has no roll in this mess.

Best Regards,

Lloyd Berg

Even if it is sky wave reception, it makes one feel good that we're

In answering one of your questions, prier to sale

this station was MMTE, so your previous logging was correct. We

Today is election day and the decision remains to

It's great weather for voting....Sunny, with a low this morning of

Dear Kermit:

Thank you for your letter of November 27, 1977. It is always

encouraging to receive reports of distant reception. Your report is in considerable agreement with our records and there is no doubt that you were in fact tuned to "The New WSNY".

We refer to our station in this manner as we just recently changed our call letters from WMBR to WSNY.

WSNY does in fact operate on 600 kilohertz with the full time power of five kilowatts. We use a non -directional antenna during day hours, and a directional antenna, pointing east, is employed at night. This explains your sudden loss of signal

at 5:30PM.

I appreciate your mention of the Cuban interference taking over the channel after our pattern change. The signal from this Cuban station is frequently heard in the Jacksonville area even while

we are on the air. This is a real problem for us as well as the other stations operating on this channel.

Your extremely detailed report will become a permanent part of our files. If you ever have occasion to be in our fair city, you are cordially invited to visit us.

Yours truly,

Bob Dilleh Chief Engineer

Dear Kermit:

Thank you very much for your report of our Station. I appreciate your time and effort, as well as that of other DXers who have sent reports in response to this test. As you will note on your QSL card

enclosed. I was unable to determine from the tone segment of our test as to whether you did actually recieve us or not. However the CW ID that you reported at 0729:45 is most correct, so therefore I did verify your report at that noted time. Having been DXing myself for over

22 years, I relize the problems one encounters on such a quest. I still actively DX when my schedule permits and use a modified FRG -7 w/2.9 kHz collins filter, and a HQ -140-X most frequently, along with a host of other recievers and gadgets. I use two diapoles one for 3 mHz and the other for 12 mHz.

Thank you again for your report and very interesting letter pertaining to your 100 watt reception of WJCM on 1340 kHz.

WGNE Radio has been on the air since June 25, of this year. We are a 500 watt daytimer, with a top forty format. Pre- sently, we are enjoying a smash success locally, since we filled a gap in radio in this area. Our only complaint has been that we are a daytimer.

Thank you for your letter of November 28. Occasionally we do get reception reports from up your way, but they are very rare.

Yes, you were picking up our signal --and apparently loud and clear for part of the time. We are happy to confirm this.

Enclosed is our December program log, which we trust will be of interest to you. Also enclosed is a little leaflet that could just turn out to be the most important thing that you will ever read.

As you are aware, we do have FCC permission to go full time on 1520 kHz. We may not go through with this, however, because of the rather limited coverage. What you were hearing, however, was our 1000 -watt, non - directional signal. Prior to a few months ago, we were directional, east and west with 1000 watts, and our signal was limited sharply north and south.

Have a meaningful Christmas, and if you don't know Him, may you come to know the Christ of Christmas.

Dear Mr. Geary;

This is confirmation of your report on our frequency test on November 6, 1959, for which we thank you very much.

November 6th was a good listening morning in your state as we have received four reports from there on our November test. We have checked with our engineer who made the test and he verifies your report.

Thank you for your kind wishes to WFBS and our personnel. Our staff is small, but very hard working. Mr. Brown awns the station and does almost everything there is to be done, and I help him. We have two full time announcers and a part-time. We are native Tennesseans, but love Florida as our adopted home since 1948, where we were bankers for more than 33 years.

Please consider tiis as an invitation to come down to the MIRACLE STRIP of Florida where you will find the finest fishing anywhere, and the whitest sand beaches in the World, plus the beautiful Gulf of Mexico.

you and yours.

Dear Mr. Geary:

This is to acknowledge receipt of your letter of February 7th and to ask you to forgive us for not answering sooner. We fisrtainly appre- ciate your writing to us, and feel quite proud that we were s8r?ar away.

Your report is correct, except thgt there was no woman at the controls; it was yours truly, and I'm no woman, think I have quite a masculine voice, so believe it might have been disturbances in between here and you, to make my voice sound like a woman's. But, that is not important, since the good part is that you heard/us, and were kind enough to write.

We are a new station; went on the air June 28, 1956, with 500 Watts; have done well, have lots of listeners, hope to make some money as we go along. This is a fast growing part of Florida, with our two mighty Air Bases, Eglin Air Force Base, and the Home of the Black Knights, Hurlburt, as our close neighbors, this area has great potentialities. With this, this is one of the best fishing ports on the coast of Florida; you should be good to yourself and come down and see our beautiful water and snow white sand beaches sometime.

Thank you again for writing, hope you pick us up again some- time.

Sincerely,

\-\LS .

RECEPTION OF W A M R -1320 VENICE, FLORIDA !!!

Dear Kermit,

Thank you for taking part in the I.R.C.A. Florida DX TEST night. The response has been FANTASTIC and I may be months going over reports and writing letters.

I am HAPPY to VERIFY your reception of W A M R - 1320 Venice, Fl on March 25, 1996 at 0404-0429 AM EST.

With a local station on 14 miles away, you should consider

your reception as "real" DX. Since we were running pre- recorded tapes for all the tests, I was able to attend some and some others. Was nice to log my own station for a

change !.

Your letter means alot, as I know you have heard WAMR in

the past. I appreciate you "staying up" for the test. This may have been the last DX test for WAMR as the station is in

the process of being sold to JAYCOR Broadcasting ( WLW among others) They are not know for running DX tests.

Power for the test was 5,000 watts using a Harris MW -5

transmitter, into a three tower direction array.

This letter may serve as your "QSL" for your reception of

W A M R. We will be issuing a "Special IRCA QSL Certificate" in the near future. With as many reports as we got, this may take awhile. I will also be "passing" on all the reports to the individual stations as well for their records.

Again, thank you from WAMR and all the other stations for

taking part in the Special DX Test Night.

Dear Sir,

PLEASE REPLY TO:

1: Kermit Geary, R.D. 2, Box 298, Walnutport, Pa.

April 30, 1960.

I have pleasure in reporting good reception of your Radio Station WZOK during its 24 hours/day "Wonderful World of Music" show. I tuned in at 2:21 A.M., Eastern Standard Time, on this morning, Saturday, April 30, 1960, and continued listening to your program of recorded dance music and commercial announcements until 3:15 A.M., E.S.T. WZOK was transmitting on its assigned frequency of 1320 kilocycles, and put a fine signal up here into the Northeast on this occasion. I am situated in the eastern part of the State of Pennsylvania, 60 miles North of Philadelphia and 90 miles West of New York City.

WZOK's signal in this area was moderately strong, S-8, with an input voltage into my receiver of 6 microvolts as measured on the signal -strength meter. Fading was negligible, and there was no interference from any other station. Static was light and had little effect upon the consistent clarity of my reception. As the result of such favorable conditions, your broadcast was heard with good clarity (Readability -4), affording enjoyable program reception at this distance from Jacksonville. Your carrier was sharp, clean-cut and fully modulated. The tonal quality of both speech and music was excellent. It was a pleasure to hear WZOK reaching up here into Pennsylvania in such fine shape during this all-night broadcast, and I enjoyed the opportunity of listening to and logging your program. Congratulations on the power and efficiency of your transmitting equipment.

I heard WZOK on my National "HRO" 9 -tube communications - type superhet, 1935 model. My antenna is a single -wire inverted "L", 125 ft. long and 30 ft. high, extending toward the Northwest, with the lead-in to the receiver coming off the Southeast end. My ground connection is made to an iron water pump in a well 175 ft. deep. The weather here at the time of my reception was overcast, ,with the temperature at 4+ degrees Fahrenheit.

Please confirm my reception of station WZOK, Jacksonville. I shall be very happy to receive your reply, kindly verifying the fact that I heard your broadcast as reported above. Return postage is enclosed for your reply. As proof that I was tuned to WZOK, I give the following log of a number of program items to which I listened:

Dear Mr. Geary:

I was wondering when I'd get a DX report from you on my new AM. It's been almost two years since your last reception of WNZS in 1991. Things have changed a lot around here since then.

You may be interested to know that WZNZ AM is one of five stations being operated by Paxson Broadcasting and Todd Communications, all housed in one complex. We have three FM's, WROO 107.3 MHZ, WAIA 93.3 MHZ and WSTF 97.9 MHZ and the two AM's that you are familiar with.

Congratulations on your reception of WZNZ AM. I have confirmed the description of your reception on November 5, 1993 at 5:55 to 6:23 P.M. and 6:44 to 6:45 P.M. Eastern Standard Time.

Here is some technical information for you on WZNZ 1460 KHZ. We transmit with an output power of 5 Kilowatts in an omni-directional pattern during the day using a 170 foot tower. At night, we go directional with no reduction in power using three 170 foot towers. We're using a Continental 315R-1 transmitter. We program a news format 24 hours a day with most programming coming from CNN Headline News, and at times we broadcast various ball games.

It was nice hearing from you again and I hope this letter satisfies your request. I hope you'll be able to receive us again or one of our other stations, who knows, maybe I'll get another AM. Enclosed please find a coverage map of WZNZ. Thank you for writing.

Your report was without a doubt the best report received and I might add one of the most enjoyable. Not the usual run-of-the-mill reports.

I am doubly happy that you enjoyed the program, and hope that you will be tuned our way again the next time we have another test which I hope to hold soon.

Again my apologise for the long delay. If you are ever in Sanford i trust that you'll come and see me. (teach me a few things) You see I'm a rookie in Broad- casting with only two years in the field.

Dear Kermit:

17 February 1958

Thank you for your letter of the 12th. Yours was the second one I've received this week. Both for the day and times on the 11th of February. The other was from Ted Weiser, 19 Fairview Avenue, Schuylkill Haven, Pa.

You may consider this as confirmation that you were receiving our signal. At the time we were transmitting on 5000 watts as we are in the process of checking our field intensity in preparation for going to 5000 watts.

We have just completed building the new rig. Two Blaw Know towers, 300 foot, 600 feet apart with a large lake in between them. Moisture content was just one of the things we were after. This makes the perfect ground signal.

The transmitter and phasing equipment are the latest models built by RCA. In fact all broadcast equipment is RCA.

Thanks again for your letter and the best of luck in logging many more stations.

Sincerely yours,

.J.(7 Herbert E. Buck Jr. Director of Operations
