Supposeyouhavethisradio.

ItisanACTradioandtherefore,youknowitisprobablyametaphor.Inthiscase,themetaphoristhatthevolumeoftheradioreflectstheproblemsinyourlife.So,thesoundsfromtheradioarethingslikethoughts,feelings,bodysensations,andproblems.Attimes,theradiocanseemprettyquiet.Atothertimes,itseemsveryloud.

So,atanygivenmomentthevolumeoftheradioreflectsthe“noise”ofyourcurrentproblems.Youaretemptedtowanttoturnthevolumedownwhenthingsinyourlifegetveryloud.So,yougotograbthehandyvolumeknobandslideitdown.However,assoonasyoudo,thevolumebouncesrightbacktoexactlywhereitwas.Thishappensoverandover.Asmuchaswedon'twanttoadmitit,thisisperhapsthenatureofhowthisworks,isn’tit?Wehavealreadytalkedabouthowcontroldoesn’treallywork,haven’twe?Understandably,though,yougetreallyfrustratedwiththeradioandyoudecidetothrowitoutthewindow.Youpickitup,readytohurl!Thenyouseeanotherknobontheside.

Itismarkedwillingness.Youdiscoverthatthoughyoucan’tturndownthevolume,youcanalwaysturnupthewillingness.Howeverloudthingsget,istheremayberoomtoacceptpainasitis?Howcanyoudothis?Youcanjustacknowledgethesitutationandletthefeelings,thoughts,andbodysensationsjustsit.Youmightsaythingslike:

• Wow.Thisissomestrongdisappointment.• Thispainisthrobbinglyintense.• OK,IguessIfeeldepressed.

Sometimesweareallgoingtobeoverwhelmedanddiveintooursuffering.Whenwedo,wemaybeabletorideoutthestormaswellaswecanandthenafterwardshaveroomtosay:
