RADICALISATION SEPTEMBER 2018

Lesson Package RADICALISATION SYNOPSIS A resource package aimed at supporting schools to increase pupil’s awareness of radicalisation and helps them develop resilience. The pack is led by a power-point presentation, with video. A set of guidance notes leads the facilitator through the power-point presentation and contains suggestions for class activities. The Counter Terrorism and Security Act of 2015 places a duty on certain bodies to have due regard to the need to prevent terrorism. This package has been produced by Avon and Somerset Constabulary in partnership with Bristol City Council as part of their Trading with Schools materials and represents a partnership approach. The package is not specific to Bristol and may be used in any area. This lesson plan is written by qualified teachers in Bristol. The Home Office have listed it on their list of resources for countering radicalisation (Prevent) and it is listed with the Time Education Supplement website. OFSTED CRITERIA The PSHE programme of study is divided into three core themes: • Health and Wellbeing • Relationships • Living in the Wider World. This lesson plan on RADICALISATION encompasses the following: • Theme 1 (Health and Wellbeing): KS3: H19. • Theme 2 (Relationships): KS4: R29. • Theme 3 (Living in the Wider World): KS3: L3, L4, L5, KS4: L3, L4, L5, L6, L7. ALTERNATIVES & OTHER RESOURCES Integrate is a youth-led national charity that empowers young people to take an active and positive role in transforming the society they live in. Twin Track is a teen drama about grooming for radicalisation and gang culture. Shot on location in Bristol, the story follows two teenagers as they are lured into dangerous parallel worlds. This drama can be used as an educational resource. You can find out more at:http://integrateuk.org/iuk-projects/twin-track/

RADICALISATION SEPTEMBER 2018

Birth of a Terrorist – this is a video produced by Surrey Police. It tells the story of Aaron who is having difficulties in his personal life and his vulnerabilities lead to him being targeted and groomed by a terrorist organisation. The film was made for young people by young people and with the accompanying lesson plan the film can be used in schools and colleges to raise awareness and create debate around issues relating to terrorism, radicalisation and violent extremism. Aimed at age 11-15. You can find out more at:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4rAAI6je74&feature=youtu.be ACT for YOUTH – Run, Hide, Tell. This is collaboration between Counter Terrorism Policing, the PSHE Association (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education), Girl Guiding and St John’s Ambulance. It is a PSHE input designed to equip young people with the knowledge to help keep themselves safe in the event of a major incident or terrorist attack. The target age is 11-16. The package consists of video and associated teaching materials. The ACT package is not a direct alternative to this Radicalisation package as ACT concentrates on what to do in the event of an incident, while this package is about preventing radicalisation and recognising those at risk. http://www.npcc.police.uk/CounterTerrorism/actforyouth.aspx AIMED AT Age 12-15 OBJECTIVES • To explain the differences between extremism, terrorism and radicalisation • To increase understanding about how people become terrorists • To recognise the danger signs of someone at risk of becoming a terrorist • To learn how to protect against extremism and radicalisation • Know how to get help. LESSON TIME Up to 60 minutes (depending on activities selected) PREPARATION TIME Please allow time for familiarisation with the lesson plan. The power-point presentation is not scripted and will require the presenter to be familiar with the content and to have read the guidance notes first. Allow time to create additional learning materials (e.g. cards and propaganda images) where you feel it is appropriate (this lesson plan links in with other areas of the curriculum, which presenters may wish to follow up).

Lesson Plan We have a package (powerpoint and lesson plan/guidance notes) produced by our Prevent Team in conjunction with Trading with Schools and Bristol City Council. The full package can be accessed online here: http://www.tradingwithschools.org/Article/41158
