Media Studies
Introduction
The media studies program at American Bangkok College Library houses an array of
information including books, videos, databases, articles, Journals, and magazines. It is idealfor students seeking a Bachelor of Arts degree because it has a wide range of subjects within
the larger film topic. It provides materials that will help a student while in school and in
preparation for the film industry. The topics consist of business management, writing
scripts, criticism, film in various countries, gender, and other interesting topics. The
collection we have will assist students with a variety of topics within media studies. Please

BOOKS
Aitken, Ian. The Documentary Film Movement : An Anthology . Edinburgh, EdinburghUniversity Press. 1998.
Campell, in Scope compliments the author’s ideas regarding the 1930’s-1940’s
documentary film movement. “For anyone interested in these issues, this book is
necessary reading for it may not only serve to educate, but to inspire.” The author
provides his knowledge of the film industry and brings the writings of well-known
individuals form the documentary film industry. UCLA, UC, Stanford, USC, and many
others own it.
Bignell, Jonathon. Writing and Cinema. London. Pearson Educaton. 1999.
Cummings in Scope capitalizes on the “relationships between the media andpostmodern and contemporary culture.” The review also explains how the author’sopinions are stimulating and thought provoking. This book is a variety of essays
discussing how writing and cinema are connected. The essays examine various
films, changes film studies, and developments with audience. Schools such as,
UCLA,USC, and Stanford own it, among other.
Clayton, A., & Klevan, A. The Language and Style of Film Criticism. Routledge. Abingdon,
Oxon. 2011.
The essays describe film critics so that those not involved in this field of work can
gain an understanding and appreciation for film criticism. The essays allow the
reader to recognize the unique language and style as well as encourage thedevelopment of film studies as an academic path. Clayton is a screen studies lecturer
and Klevan is a film studies lecturer. It is owned by UNC-G, NYU USC, among others.

According Lieberson, this current book focuses on the present state of the film
industry including technology, and possible changes that could occur and is
described simple and clear way. Reviews also describe it as “the book oninternational business of film.” It takes a look at film as a business rather than an art,
the structure of the business, business management skills, and advice for future
professionals. The author is a course director and guest lecturer on film and media
business.
Gugler, Josef.(editor) Film in the Middle East and North Africa- Creative Dissidence. Austin,
TX: University of Texas Press. 2011.
Thirgood believes the book provides a comprehensive guide for directors of film
and the issues that are faced in this region. According to reviews, the censorship
issue in this region is highly discussed and the book provides insight to films and
hurdles that directors face now. According to Haqmoun’s review, the perspectivethis book offers on film in the Middle East and North Africa is unlike any insight
available elsewhere. Nineteen well-known film individuals contributed to the essays
in this book including directors, scholars, and novelists.
Haberski, Raymond J. Jr. It's Only A Movie!: Film and Critics in American Culture, University
Press of Kentucky, 2001.
Reviews discuss how the book is well researched and argues interestingly about
film as in-between art and entertainment. Armstrong believes, “is a splendidly
researched and argued account of American film criticism’s first golden age.” Many
other reviews on University of Kentucky Press describe the ingenuity and
uniqueness of the book. Reviews include Choice, Library Journal and Online Film
Critics Society. 516 schools in the United States own it .
Hing-Yuk Wong, Cindy. Film Festivals: Culture, People, and Power of the Global Screen.Rutgers University Press. New Brunswick, NJ. 2011.
According to Dixon and Marchetti, the book offers a new and interesting perspective
to film festivals that is well researched and up to date. This book discusses the
history and involvement of film festivals in the eye of the public and professionals in
the filmography industry. The festivals discussed cover various festivals across the
world, including Hong Kong, which is in the vicinity of our college.
Peberdy, Donna. Masculinity and Film Performance: Male Angst in Contemporary American
Cinema. Palgrave Macmillan. New York, NY. 2011.
Davies believes this book is one of the most notable regarding contemporaryAmerican film in the past few years. This interesting and recently published book
focuses on masculinity in film. Purse sees it as enjoyable and highly intelligent.
Peberdy studies how acting intertwines with masculinity and culture. It is owned by
NYU, UC, UPenn, Columbia, among others.

This journal focuses on all aspects of media including music, film, communication,
culture, and government and among other aspects of media. It has articles from
universities across the world about book reviews, commentaries, and worldwide
technology innovations. It was established and is maintained by Yahya Kamalipour,
a professor and department head at Purdue University Calumet. There arenumerous editions narrowed by culture across the world. University of
Pennsylvania, Georgetown, and Emory, USC, NY, and others subscribe to it.
Nemy, P., & University Film and Video Association. Journal of Film and Video (1984-
Present). Champaign, Illinois. University of Illinois Press.
The Journal of Film and Video, is an international journal where those within the
field of film studies discuss film production, history, and other aspects of the area. It
also is a forum for instructors to debate methods of teaching and the role of film and
video in human society. It has over 1000 media-related professionals and
institutions in the association.

This author in this article discusses movie making from a firsthand perspective. He
discusses how thinking backwards helps the director stay to a budget and maintain
a clear idea of the ideal finished product. He also explains issues he personally
encountered while making movies on a budget and concepts to consider when
making a low-budget film.
Strayer, K. Literature and Film Quarterly. (2010). Reinventing the Inhuman : Avatars, Cylons,
and “Homo Sapiens” in Contemporary Science-Fiction Television Series. Vol. 38. (194-
204).
This recent article explains the attraction of new forms of science fiction regarding
avatars and other in-human characters. It explains the modernization process
leading up to what is now the present science fiction. Strayer is a lecturer in the film
studies department at the University of Pittsburgh and a member of the Society for
Cinema and Media Studies. 699 schools in the United States including UCLA, USC,
UC, Cornell, and NYU use it.

This periodical focuses on film criticism and has information on movie theatre
design and technology. It was launched in 1934 and is published monthly. The
periodical contains articles on exhibition, production, and the distribution of film. It
would also be beneficial to our small college in Thailand because it reports on both

Palmer Liza, Palmer ,Tim. Film Matters. Department of Film Studies at UNC-W.2010.
According to The Chronicle of Higher Education, the journal helps undergraduatesin the field immensely and provides positive criticism to its undergraduate
contributors. It is ideally read by students and related to students studying film
aimed at introducing the film studies to students as a graduate program. It applies
the in-class concepts learned to the “real-world” of professionals in the filmindustry. Although very new, it is already used by UNC-W, Georgetown, Cambridge,
Warwick University and other universities worldwide.

The catalog contains all American film information from 1893-1974 and selected
major films from 1975-2008. The American Film Institute’s editorial team alsoupdates it yearly. AFI was founded in 1967 and is known to provide leadership and
education within the film, television and digital media area of art. It is subscribed to
by University of Pittsburgh, University of Texas, Rutgers, UNC-W, Indiana University,
USC, UC and others.
Cinema Image Gallery. 19th century-Present. EBSCO Publishing. [October 20, 2011.]
This database provides a historical view of movie making through images. Theimages include: films in production, directors working on-set, stars, set, costume,
production design, hair and make-up, as well as uncommon behind the scene
images, and TV still photos. It is owned by EBSCO and subscribed to by a variety of
schools including UNC-W, Pitt, Duke, and USF.
Communication & Mass Media Complete. 2003-Present. EBSCO Publishing. September 30,
2011.
It provides materials for more than 600 journals covering various areas in mass
media. This includes the film area where directors, influential figures, and influential
films are incorporated into the journal articles. This would provide insight to motion
pictures in the news and criticism. UNC-G, University of Texas, University of Pittsburgh, UNC, University of California, University of Connecticut, and others
subscribe to this database.
Film Literature Index. 1976-2001. [October 20, 2011]
It covers the time period between 1976-2001. It annually indexes 150 full
periodicals from 30 countries and selected articles from another 200 periodicals. It
ranges from scholarly to popular and has more than 2000 subject headings. It is

spectrum of the film industry where users can find nearly anything regarding film
and television. It includes movie reviews and images from 1914 through 2011.
Subscriptions include the UNC-G Library, Rutgers, NCSU, UC, University of
Minnesota, and others.

This website provides information for anyone interested in digital media. Aside
from membership, there is a catalog of feature films students could browse through.
There are also events posted and programs to be involved in relating to the
professional film industry. Jobs, press releases, and organization news are also
published here. It was established in 1967 and continues today as a non-profit
organization.
