AV TROPHIES

There are 6 Athletics Victoria racewalk perpetual trophies that are awarded each winter. The number and makeup of the

trophies is relatively arbitrary and simply reflects monies left to Athletics Victoria to honour former members of

significance.

NORM GOBLE TROPHY Most points earned in Mens AV Championships

BETTY NEWMAN TROPHY Women’s Walking Team Champions

AVIS REDMAN TROPHY Best Under 16 Girl Walker

TOM DAINTRY TROPHY Best Under 14 Girl Walker

BOB GARDINER SHIELD Best U16/U14 Boy

SIMON BAKER SHIELD Best U18 Boy

JARED TALLENT SHIELD Winner of the Victorian 50km Road Championship

The VRWC secretary forwards a list of nominations to Athletics Victoria at the conclusion of each winter season, with

a view to confirming the winners and making the presentations at the VRWC Winter Presentations.

The trophies are then returned to AV who arrange for the engraving of the latest winners.

A further AV/VRWC perpetual trophy is awarded each summer as follows

GEORGE KNOTT TROPHY Winner of the Victorian Open 5000m Track Championship

Some trophies are kept at the Athletics Victoria office and some are kept at the VRWC clubrooms at Middle Park.

Betty Newman Trophy, Avis Redman Trophy, Norman L Goble Trophy and Tom Daintry Trophy

NORMAN L GOBLE TROPHY MOST POINTS EARNED IN MENS A.V. CHAMPIONSHIPS

Norm Goble was a champion boxer with the Scouts during his early days and started off his athletics career as a runner.

He turned to walking in the 1930’s and joined VAWC in 1935. He quickly established himself as one of the most

consistent distance men, representing Victoria in no fewer than 6 Alexander Cups before his retirement in 1955.

He became club VAWC Vice Captain in 1947 and then served as Club Captain from 1948 to1951. Perhaps his most

memorable walking performance was in winning the VAWC 50 Mile championship in 1948 in the fine time of 9:21:24.

In 1952, he became secretary and treasurer of VAWC. He was also active in the VAAA, being elected Vice President in

1953 and serving his time there with distinction. He was awarded VAWC life membership in 1955.

Once he retired from competition, he became a regular Victorian team manager with teams for the National

Championships.

He served as VAWC secretary till 1971 (20 years) and as treasurer till 1973 (22 years). He and Alf Robinson (who

served during this whole time as President) were the driving forces behind the club and were responsible for the

continuing development of the club over this whole timeframe.

Apart from this AV trophy, the Goble Trophy is awarded annually to the winner of the AFRWC Boys Under 15 3 km

Championship held in conjunction with the Canberra Racewalking Carnival.

This trophy is awarded to the male walker who earns the most points in the following 5 Victorian Championships

AV 10 km Championship

AV 15 km Championship

AV 20 km Championship

AV 30 km Championship

AV 50 km Championship

Over the years, the award has been won by many of Australia’s top walkers as the list below attests.

TOM DAINTRY TROPHY A.V. BEST UNDER 14 GIRL WALKER

DONATED BY ROSANNE SMITH

When first setup, this trophy was awarded to the best First Year Under 14 girl walker. Tom Daintry was one of our best

known and most talented walkers who had a career of over 60 years as a competitive walker, starting in the early 1930’s

and finishing in the mid 1990's.

Tom was also an impeccable stylist and a coach of many years standing. He always believed in the need to teach young

walkers to walk stylishly and with speed but within the rules. This award has proved to be a stepping stone for many of

our young walkers and many of the past winners have gone on to have very good careers as senior walkers.

In recent years, young walkers are registering with A.V. and racing the Under 14 division from the age of 11 onwards.

Hence it is increasingly difficult to find a suitable FIRST Year candidate in the 12-13 year old age group. This in 2007,

the award was changed to recognize the Best Under 14 girl walker rather than the Best First Year Under 14.

BETTY NEWMAN TROPHY A.V. WOMENS WALKING TEAM AGGREGATE

Betty Newman was one of our outstanding racewalking coaches for many years and this trophy recognises her unique

contribution to the development of women’s walking in Victoria.

It is awarded to the Senior Women Athletics Victoria Team that amasses the most number of points in the AV

Women’s Roadwalk championships.

This trophy has been almost exclusively the domain of the Knox club who have dominated women’s walking in

Victoria with both depth and quality since this award was created.

Over the 10 or so years, the award has been spread more widely with other clubs coming to the fore.

AVIS REDMAN MEMORIAL TROPHY A.V. BEST UNDER 16 GIRL

Avis Redman was one of the stalwarts of the Victorian Women’s Athletics Association and was also very involved in

the sport of racewalking with her husband Fred and her daughter Marion.

This trophy was traditionally awarded to the Athletics Victoria Under 16 female racewalker who showed the most

improvement during the Winter season. Many of the former winners have gone on to have fine careers and even, in

some cases, to represent Australia. It is indeed a significant award that recognises the potential of the walker and the

achievements of the current year.

In 2010, this was changed to recognise the achievements of the Best Under 16 female walker.

BOB GARDINER SHIELD AV BEST U14/U16 BOY

This shield is awarded to the best U14/U16 Boy for race Walking in Victoria. This shield was introduced in 2017,

named after Bob Gardiner, current life member of VRWC, who continues to compete on a regular basis.

Two time Olympian (1964 and 1968) and Commonwealth Games Silver medallist (1970), Bob is a very prominent

VRWC member, helping set up, riding the bike etc on race days, and generally helping out in whatever capacity is

required. We are truly blessed to have such a walker among us.

Simon Baker, current VRWC life member, coach, Olympian and World champion.

Simon ranks alongside Nathan Deakes and Jared Tallent as one of our three best performed male walkers ever. His

impressive resume includes representations in 4 Olympic Games, 4 World Championships, 3 Commonwealth Games,

and 6 World Race Walking Cups. He was Commonwealth Champion over 30km in 1986, Racewalking World Cup

winner over 50 km in 1989 and still holds the Commonwealth 50 km track record.

GEORGE KNOTT TROPHY WINNER OF VICTORIAN 5000M TRACK WALK

Within 12 months of VRWC Life Member George Knott carrying the Olympic Torch in the Torch relay, which was

held before the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000, he had passed away, leaving a bequest to the club. In order to

remember an Olympian who had given so much to walking and athletes in his life, it was decided to award a trophy to

the winner of the Athletics Victorian 5km track championship. It was to be first awarded in 2002.

So far, Chris Erickson has dominated these championships, winning 8 of the last 13 editions. Many of the performances

have been under 20 minutes, long regarded as a superb standard. Rhydian Cowley has won 4 of the last 6 editions,

indicating that he is now a force with which to be reckoned.

ELSIE JACOBSON MEMORIAL TROPHY WINNER, V.R.W.C. OPEN WOMEN 15 KM CHAMPIONSHIP

This event is held during the winter season. This trophy is a silver teapot donated by Ray Smith and reminds all of the

vital club contribution of Elsie Jacobson.

Elsie was a tireless worker for the club. She was Social Secretary for nearly 20 years from 1963 to 1980. She was

always to be seen in the clubroom kitchen on race days and instituted the famous 10 cent cup of tea.

She was involved in the club in many different ways. She worked with the other ladies of the club to organise social and

fundraising functions. She was an able typist and did most of the club typing, including the Annual Reports. She even

did a stint as club Treasurer in 1982 as one of her last contributions to the club.

She was awarded life membership in 1975.

RAY SMITH TROPHY WINNER, V.R.W.C. OPEN 35 KM CHAMPIONSHIP

This event is held during the winter season and this trophy is awarded to encourage our walkers to attempt the longer

walking distances. It is not gender specific, simply going to the first VRWC finisher in our annual 35km Club

Championship.

The trophy is named after Ray Smith who came 6th

in the 50 km event in the Melbourne Olympics in 1956. Once his

competitive career ended, Ray moved into the administrative and judging arena, doing stints as President and as

Treasurer. He was also an IAAF Walking Judge and had a long and distinguished judging career. He was awarded Life

Membership of the club in 1983 and also has life membership of Coburg Harriers and Athletics Victoria.

This trophy is a silver coffee pot donated by Ray. On the base of the trophy the following words are engraved

* In 2010, there were no finishers in the VRWC 35km Club Championship so a decision was made to award the

trophy to the club member who went furthest - in this case, it was Karyn O'Neill with 33km. Awarding the

trophy to Karyn for the year also set a precedent, confirming that this award could be won by both men and

women.

STELLA MURNANE MEMORIAL TROPHY

This trophy was awarded to the winner of the Veteran Women’s 10 km walk held during the Summer Season each year.

It started out being awarded to the winner of the Open Women’s 10 km event but was changed to the Veteran Ladies

race in 1994.

Stella Murnane discovered walking at the age of 62, in an attempt to lose some weight. She consequently won Masters

medals at State, National and International levels, competing in Rome in 1985, Melbourne in 1987 and Eugene in 1989.

In 1989 Stella entered 8 events even though she knew she had incurable cancer. She was a great inspiration to all who

knew her, young and not so young and should be remembered for her great fighting spirit and love of life.

When the trophy filled in 2007, it was decided to replace it with a new trophy, The Heather Carr Trophy, to recognise

Heather's outstanding competitive career and her dominance in the Masters area. She won the Stella Murnane an

amazing 9 times.

This trophy replaced the Stella Murnane Trophy when it reached its end of life. The Heather Carr Trophy awarded to

the winner of the Masters Women’s 10 km walk held during the Summer Season each year. It was instituted in honour

GUS THEOBOLD MEMORIAL TROPHY

Gus Theobold joined VAWC in 1931 and was an enthusiastic walker and club stalwart. He was awarded Life

Membership in 1961 but he was regarded as a senior member of the club long before that. When the club reformed in

1946 after the Second World War, one of the first trophies to be set up was the Gus Theobold Trophy and it was

contested for some years.

A foundation member of the Veteran movement in 1971, Gus was unbeaten over the 5km and 20km distances in his

world age divisions. He won the coveted double at Toronto in 1975, Gothenburg in 1977, Christchurch in 1981, Rome

in 1985, Melbourne in 1987 and at Eugene in 1989.

His times at these veteran championships showed that he could still walk a good pace that belied his years. In

Gothenburg in 1977 he clocked 30:42 for the 5000m walk as an 80 year old. In Christchurch in 1981 as an 83 year old,

he clocked 43:46 for the 5000m walk. In Rome in 1985 as an 88 year old, he clocked 34:53. In Melbourne in 1987 as a

90 year old, he clocked 35:18 and in Eugene in 1989 as a 92 year old, he clocked 39:49. His last big races were the

Australian National Veteran titles in Melbourne in April 1990 when he once again won the 5000m/20km double – he

had been unbeaten in National Veteran titles since their inception in 1972.

When Gus died in 1990, he had clocked up a remarkable 59 years of service to the club. The Gus Theobold Trophy was

re-instituted as a fitting memorial to this remarkable individual. It is now awarded annually to the winner of the Open

Mens 20 km Club Championship which is held as part of the VRWC Summer Walking Championships.

RUNNERS WORLD AWARDS

Neil Ryan of Runners World Kew approached VRWC early in the 2009 winter season with an offer of some club

sponsorship. While we have our Points and Handicap awards, the awards are not necessarily won by our BEST walkers

as they are influenced by participation rates. So, after various discussions, it was decided to institute Runners World

Winter and Summer Season Awards.

There are no perpetual trophies but there are awards, both monetary and in the form of Runners World Kew vouchers.
