Dear friends, We made it! We have made it through Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kip-pur and are about to embark on our next two holidays: Sukkot and Simchat Torah. The latter of these two is one of my favorite holi-days. This is due to many reasons: we will celebrate consecration on Wednesday night, October 11 during our Simchat Torah service where we will formally welcome our newest students formally to their process of Jewish education with blessing and the gift of their own Torah scroll; we will sing and dance with the Torah; and most im-portantly, we will have the chance to unroll the Torah around the en-tire sanctuary where we will finish reading the book of Deuteronomy and then in the next breath begin again with the book of Gene-sis. And from this practice of unrolling the Torah to begin again
comes one of my favorite teachings. The last word of the Torah is ישראל (Yisrael, Israel)¸ which ends with the Hebrew letter lamed )ל) The Torah then begins with the word בראשית(bereishit, in the beginning) which begins with the Hebrew letter ב (bet). The two letters, when read together as they are on Simchat Torah form the Hebrew word לב (lev) which means heart. Therefore, the Torah itself teaches us that it is the heart of the Jewish people and it should encompass our community, not only as it will physically when we unroll it, but in our hearts, minds, souls each day of the year. And truthfully, if you have never seen the entire Torah unrolled before, it is a sight you do not want to miss. I hope to see you there. B’ahavah, Rabbi Jordan

The High Holy Days ask a lot from us. They ask us to gather as a community, to make time for family and friends, and to confront the results of our decisions made over the past year. In short, these days challenge us. Are you part of this community to see what CDT can give to you? Or, are you here to see what you can give to CDT? I encourage all of our community to take a look at what we can all do to help Dor Tamid continue to grow. This time of year, we ask you to give. Give CDT more of your time, love and energy. This year I also ask you to open not only your hearts, but also your wallets to support our community. This week, you should have received information about our upcoming campaign, “Kulanu B’yachad – All of Us Together - for our Future.” A small group of "angel donors" have already committed to get the campaign going by committing to a $125,000 match-ing pool if our community joins together and collectively match or exceed their gift. This group is not made up of the group of "regulars" or those that were the main donors to Levataynu. This means we really have the potential to raise significant amounts of money if our entire community gets behind this and believes in the objective. In the past, funds that were raised were used almost exclusively for budgetary purposes. This time incoming funds are destined for 3 "buckets" - budget, endowment, and reserve. Give because this is one of the few charitable contributions where you know exactly where 100% of the money goes. You can see it, you can feel it in your heart, and you will get immediate gratification. Contribute gladly and generously. We must support this community and all that it does. As a community we need to do more, and with your help we can. Please help us build on our successes and continue our work into the future. A generous gift to Dor Tamid will make a difference. And we are off….. yes, we are off to a very good start and a busy one! Here at CDT Religious School we are busy doing Tekun Olam. We are trying to make the world a better place for every-one - we are doing that by writing Shana Tovah cards to Israeli and Jewish soldiers, commemorating 9/11, trying to help the victims of the horrific hurricanes, preparing for a Shabbat dinner and much more!!! And the most important thing is that we are doing it together like one big happy family!

Our 4th Grade classes wrote Shana Tovah cards for the Israeli and Jewish
American Soldiers with their teacher Ms. Stacey. They wished them a safe and healthy year and they thanked them for everything they do for all of us around the world.
Our 5th grade class, with their teacher Ms. Landy, wrote prayers
for the people of Florida who were affected by the hurricane. Our Pre-k/K students, with their teacher Ms. Annette, made American flags. They waved them as we sang together “America the Beautiful” during our morning Tefilah Service to commemorate 9/11.
After the service, our 5th grade class was able to discuss the events
of 9/11 with Dr. Marty Duke, a congregant and a survivor of 9/11. Our Middle school students got to participate in a memorial service for 9/11 where they met and heard Dr. Duke’s experiences from that terrible day.
Some of you have already gotten a chance to speak to, or meet our new Religious School Assistant, Idit Orlinsky. It has been so much fun to work with her and to get to know her better. We even got to braid together the Challahs for the 3
rd Grade Shabbat dinner.

My name is Idit Orlinsky and I am 39 years old. I was born and raised in Israel. I am a wife to Ofir and a mother of three beautiful children: Lior (15), Harel Yosef (13) and Yalee (7). During my professional life I worked as a banker for 13 years. Three years ago my husband's company relocated us from Israel to At-lanta and I decided to dedicate my time helping the kids settle in. My fam-ily is doing well and it’s now time to worry about me. Therefore I'm very excited and happy to have the opportunity to be a part of your warm and welcoming congregation.
I look forward working with every one of you and watching Dor Tamid grow.

Devin Wolinsky
October 21, 2017
Devin is a 7th grader at Taylor Road Middle School. His main interest is in sports. When he was two, we marveled at how he always threw a very straight baseball every time. Now he has become quite the athlete and plays on the middle school football team and the Ocee Park baseball cir-cuit. At home, when he’s
not shooting on our basketball hoop, he’s usually playing games on his Xbox and computer. For his tikkun olam/social action project, Devin painted a room at a home that is part of Jewish Family & Career Ser-vices’s Zimmerman-Horowitz Independent Living Program. This is a supportive living program that enables people with disabilities to live as independently as possible. He chose this project because he is good at doing projects around the house, and this would help the person moving into that home. Devin also recently donated care package items to be sent to hurricane victims in Puerto Rico. He plans to con-tinue with hurricane relief efforts because he knows it simply is the right thing to do.
Kira Hecht October 28, 2017
Kira is a 7th grader at Webb Bridge Middle School. She enjoys cheerleading (Go Raid-ers!), soccer, and tum-bling, and can often be found upside down for no reason. When not being active herself, she is an avid football fan (Go Patriots! [shh]), en-joys crafting and read-ing fantasy and action
books.
For her tikkun olam/social action project, Kira organized a group of friends to work at The Packaged Goods, an or-ganization that offers the community an environment where groups can come in to decorate and personalize care pack-ages for people in need in the Atlanta area. Kira’s group decorated and filled bags of essentials to benefit Hugs for
Soldiers and Veterans Empowerment Organization.

Marissa Rabin October 7, 2017
Marissa is a 7th grader at Au-trey Mill Middle School. She enjoys playing tennis, tumbling, and spending time with her family and a great group of friends. She has been playing tennis since she was eight years old and likes being outside, especially in the pool no matter what the weather. She loves to travel and recently went on trips to Florida, New York, and Memphis. She attended Camp
Barney Medintz for 3 years and has maintained close rela-tionships with her friends, many of whom are here today to celebrate! She is passionate about animals and would have many at home if her parents allowed it. When she is at home, she loves to spend time with her friends and family, especially her dog Lexi. Marissa’s tikkun olam/social action project hit very close to home. Her mom is a lung-cancer survivor, so she decided to raise money for the American Lung Association. Marissa participated in a fundraiser by climbing one of the tallest buildings in Atlanta with her family, raising over $600 for the organization and placing 3rd among her age group. Having her mom climb with her meant a lot for both of them!
Zoey Granit October 14, 2017
Zoey is an 8th-grade student at South Forsyth Middle School. Her favorite subjects are science and drama. Out-side of school, Zoey enjoys pre-team gymnastics and playing piano. She also loves spending time with her cousins, brother and friends riding bicycles around our neighbor-hood and jumping on the trampoline. Zoey aspires to be an actress and/or model, in addition to being a scien-
tist, and has recently worked as an extra on a popular TV show filmed in the Atlanta area! For Zoey's tikkun olam/social action project, she volunteered at the Douglasville Rehab Center. Zoey relishes visiting with the residents, playing games, and doing art projects with them. Zoey has found, through listening to the seniors remi-nisce to her about their life stories, that they have lived amazing lives! They are so delighted to have someone inter-ested in their histories. The experience has been very en-lightening and rewarding. Zoey looks forward to spending

“What the World Needs Now is Love, Sweet Love…” – Those words by Hal David and Burt Bacharach were rele-vant in the 1960’s and they are even more relevant today. Love has many meanings: if one is hungry, it means food; if one has no shoes, it means footwear; if one has suffered bigotry and hatred, it means equality, if one has no power, it means fuel and electricity; and if one has suffered in any manner, it means repair and “refuah sh’lema.” This past month or so, we have seen widespread devastation due to horrific acts of nature (Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria and the earthquake in Mexico). On top of the day to day plights of food insecurity and homelessness, just to name two, the people of North America and the Caribbean are in need of more “love” than ever. We at CDT have always opened our hearts. We’ve supported the Atlanta Community Food Bank in our continuous collection of food, as well as with our Homes Against Hunger program. We’ve marched with SOJOURN (Southern Jewish Resource Network) in the Atlanta PRIDE parade, along with other Jewish organizations and synagogues. This year’s parade is coming up on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15
th, 2017 in Downtown Atlanta. It’s important that we
share our “love” and support for people to enjoy their basic human right to love whom they want, freely and without fear of repercussion. Recently, we had a supplies drive to benefit the victims of Hurricane Harvey down in Texas. Thank you to all who supported this effort and a special shout out to Alan Mishkoff, Rabbi Ottenstein, Rob Lederman, Larry Berger and Jekyll Brewery for their efforts and support of this very important collection and distribution. The victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, desperately need us to show them some “love” by helping them get their necessities for daily living. Please check our website and our Facebook members’ page for information on how to help them. We are still collecting gently used coats and winter wear/ accessories to benefit the Gwinnett Women and Children’s Shelter and for the North Fulton Community Charities. Please bring these items to the lobby of CDT prior to Octo-ber 15
th, 2017. The bins for Food Collection for Project Isaiah will be in the lobby until October 3
rd, so please re-
member to bring food, even after Yom Kippur! On the 18
th of every month, from October to April, our members volunteer to prepare food and bring it to serve at
the Zaban Paradies Couples Center in Atlanta. We are always looking for new people to participate in that, as well as to join our Social Action Committee and/or to become part of the CDT community that excels in “showing our love” by performing Tikkun Olam (good deeds) in order to make our world a better place. Happy New Year and happy fall! It was great to see so many congregants out in cel-ebration and observance during the high holidays. In tandem with the theme of our holidays this year, the goal of the Engagement Initiative is to increase our sense of community through engagement by fostering a sense of connection. Thank you to the 106 congregants who have already taken the survey and donated 430 Moments! If you have not already done so, we would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to complete the survey by October 4th. The information gath-ered from the survey will assist us in creating and matching Moments with congre-gants based on their interests and skills in conjunction with the needs of CDT. This program will be most successful by having a large participant base from which to make connections.
Please note that we have made some changes to the Moments Program this year. Considering feedback from past par-ticipants and Rabbi Jordan, donated Moments will no longer be used in conjunction with CDT services or worship oppor-tunities. Also, please note that Moments donated in past years do not carry over, so let’s start the new Jewish year and the new Engagement Initiative year off with energy and enthusiasm! All congregants age 13 and older are encouraged to participate. The Engagement Committee would like to wish all our congregants a healthy and happy new year and may you all be inscribed in the book of life!

was a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy a delicious dinner. Special thanks to Lisa and Glenn Romm for hosting a fun night.
September was another busy month for CDT’s Sisterhood! Our second beginner’s Mah Jong night was great, and we’re looking forward to doing it again on 10/23. Operation Isaiah, coordinated by Sharon Rocco was a success. Thanks to all at CDT who brought food during Yom Kippur to benefit the Atlanta Community Food bank. Sisterhood also sent Rosh Hashanah cards to all of our college students so that they can feel connected to the CDT community. Thanks to Lisa Romm for facilitating this effort!
