1 Rabbi Jonathan Crane [email protected] Of Goats and Gods Shabbat Shalom. It’s well known Moses was fond of Yiddish aphorisms. One of his favorite was, “Don’t approach a goat from the front, a horse from the back, or a fool from any side.” 1 Today I’m going to tell a small davar about Moses perhaps foolishly approaching a goat from the front, side, top and bottom. In this week’s parashah Moses instructs Aaron to clean the Tabernacle. Included in this thankless task is a ritual involving two goats. One of the goats Aaron had to slaughter. The other, Moses said, was to be earmarked as an azazel and would be sent off into the wilderness as a scapegoat. But my story does not really involve these two goats but another. Later on in the parashah Moses instructs Aaron, his sons and all of Israel to bring their sacrificial livestock to the Tabernacle to worship Adonai properly. This is because they should not, as Moses says explicitly, “offer their sacrifices any more to the goats after whom they stray.” 2 In Moses’ view, sacrificing animals out in the open away from the Tabernacle was tantamount to homicide, and anyone who did so was to be cut off from the 1 http://thinkexist.com/quotation/don-t_approach_a_goat_from_the_front-a_horse_from/8495.html 2 Leviticus 17:7.
