Rabbi Efrem Goldberg features at the Rabbinical Council’sAnnual Conference The annual residential conference of the Rabbinical Council of the United Synagogue (RCUS) washeld recently in Hellidon, Northamptonshire and was attended by almost 100 rabbanim andrebbetzens, including a number of colleagues from the regions.

The conference was presided over by Rabbi Baruch Davis, Chair of the RCUS and opened with a key-note address from the Chief Rabbi. Delegates learned from the Dayanim of the London Beth Din andwere greatly impressed by a series of insightful presentations from this year’s scholar-in-residence,Rabbi Efrem Goldberg, Senior Rabbi of the Boca Raton Synagogue, Florida, on the theme of‘Strategies for Creating Community’.

social action initiatives and for next year’s ShabbatUK. It also included four dedicated programmingslots for rebbetzens as well as a full programme of supervised activities for children.

Steve Pack, President of the US and a number of his fellow Trustees of the United Synagoguedelivered a special briefing to the conference to update delegates on progress with theimplementation of aspects of the US’ Strategic Review. After-dinner addresses included a movingspeech by Edwin Shuker, a Jew from Baghdad who works to preserve Jewish shrines and sites thereand who is Vice President of the European Jewish Congress, and from Simon Johnson, CEO of theJewish Leadership Council, who reflected on ethical dilemmas that he has been confronted withduring his past career in the media and sports industries.

A great spirit of unity and warmth was evident throughout the event which provided manyopportunities for sharing ideas and for networking. Rabbi Sam Taylor (Western Marble Arch)commented: “Thank you for organising the RCUS conference. Emma and I both found it veryenjoyable and extremely worthwhile”

Paying tribute to those who had planned and implemented the conference, Rabbi Davis observedthat the event had been a resounding success at many levels and had given much needed chizuk tothe rabbanim and rebbetzens.
