An illustration of this fact is the story Or. Hovey tells of a frisky young puppy that knew no fear and would boldly follow the explorer to the remotest bounds. One day the dog lost him self in a gallery he undertook to ex plore on his own account. A lamp was set for him at Echo River, and the party fetnrned to the hotel. The next 1 > morning the dog was found sitting by the liadip patiently waiting for aid. No sooner, however, had he been carried H ever the river then he ran away again, and was visaing for two days, and then appeared on top of earth once more. In the derknesa of perpetual midnight he had flouudered through mud banks, swam rivers and threaded iatrieate passages. nd 0 *rapound of cyanogen with a metallic agent. Cyanogen is a colorless, poisonous liquefiable gas which has the odor of alm onds aud burns with a purp le flame. Cyanide of potassium is made by burning potassium, au alkali m etal, in cyanogen gas, and is really n p russia te of potash. I t is produced also iu blast furnaces in which ore is smelted, with coke or coal, and is perm anent when kept dry, but decomposes readily in moist air. It crystallizes in dry, octagonal blocks, and is extrem ely soluble in water. I t has the odor of prussic acid and k indred b itterness of taste. Cyanide of potassium is also used in e lectrom etallurgy and photography to a considerable extent. It will remove m etallic oxides, the juices of fruits and indelible ink.
