PROCESS AND METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

With 34 years of technology market research experience, VDC has a well-demonstrated ability to design and execute rigorous methodologies. We rely heavily on our own primary research, which we reinforce with information from secondary sources where appropriate. For this research service, VDC will use the following methodology:

INFRASTRUCTURE AND TOOLS

w Market segmentation. Including product, vertical market, customer type, installation environment, application and distribution channel definitions and segmentations.

w Technical/solution value chain. Including examples of the key devices, components and subsystems that make up the building blocks of the largest and fastest growing categories of RFID equipment and systems.

5

w Industry structure/commercial value-chain. Including detailed analysis of the leading and emerging suppliers, integrators and resellers of RFID technology. Analysis will include competition value chain segmentation and market dynamics, strategies and business models, and profiles of key industry participants.

w Survey tools. The primary research process consists of structured, in-depth telephone interviews and supplemental Web-based surveys with suppliers, users and evaluators, distributors, and VARs/systems integrators. VDC will design highly specific questionnaires to be used within each target community listed on the following page. These questionnaires will be sent to sponsors for comment and feedback.

w Survey target databases. Including VDC proprietary sources, research program sponsors, and industry-specific third parties (trade publications, Web sites, conferences, etc.).

PRIMARY RESEARCH

w Conduct a comprehensive primary research program. The following programs will constitute the core of our primary data collection efforts:

Suppliers. Structured in-depth interviews will be conducted on-site and by telephone with Presidents, Vice Presidents of Marketing, Business Development Managers and Senior Product Managers at RFID equipment, software and system suppliers. Equipment and systems include: RFID ICs, transponders, readers, contactless smartcard systems, printer/encoders, middleware, RTLS/LBS, RFID-enabled sensors and wireless network infrastructure equipment.

Enterprise end users and evaluators. Structured in-depth interviews will be conducted with enterprise end users and evaluators in order to obtain current and future requirements. VDC will supplement these telephone interviews with a Web survey targeting hundreds of end users and evaluators. Primary research will include:

⇒ Telephone interviews: VDC will speak in detail with a number of enterprise end users and evaluators to address core, critical issues surrounding products, trends and developments in their respective industry or application.

⇒ Web/E-mail surveys: In order to reach a broader base of users and evaluators across many industries and applications, thousands of detailed and concise supplemental surveys will be delivered.

Channel groups. VDC will also conduct interviews with leading dealers/distributors, value-added resellers and integrators of RFID equipment and systems. Through these interviews, VDC will understand the trends shaping the current and future distribution channels for RFID equipment and systems.

Standards organizations. VDC will survey standards organizations to learn about current and future developments impacting the RFID industry.

SECONDARY RESEARCH

w Conduct a focused secondary research program. In addition to the extensive primary research efforts described above, VDC will also incorporate targeted secondary research wherever it is needed to further develop and substantiate our findings.

Analysis of financial reports – For all the suppliers of RFID technology whose stock is publicly traded, VDC will obtain and examine 10Ks, 10Qs, annual reports, financial analysts’ reports and rating agency reports. In the case of privately held corporations, VDC will obtain and examine operational and financial information from a number of third-party sources, including Dunn & Bradstreet, CorpTech, etc.

Internet searches – VDC will comb the corporate Web sites of RFID solutions providers to obtain all relevant information. Some of the material that will be gathered includes product offerings, detailed specifications, press releases, corporate backgrounds and channel infrastructure.

7

Trade press search and analysis – VDC will conduct a detailed search and analysis of the relevant trade press to supplement our research and findings.

Other sources – Industry associations, standards bodies, independent consultancies, academic institutions, government agencies, public forums and consortia.

ANALYSIS METHODS

The rigor of VDC’s research methodology yields a considerable amount of raw data and information that creates significant value when VDC analysis methods are applied.

This market research report will include a number of unique analysis methods, including:

w Market Segmentation and Definition. One of the most challenging and important aspects of RFID market development is market definition and segmentation. How potential market opportunities, target customers and competing solutions are defined is critical to building:

⇒ Accurate market estimates

⇒ Realistic technology penetration forecasts

⇒ Meaningful supplier position and share, and

⇒ Detailed user requirements and preferences profiles

w Market Estimates and Forecasts. VDC market penetration scenarios, estimates and forecasts are built using two methods simultaneously: (1) top-down based on supplier shipment model; and (2) bottom-up based on purchasing plans. Key inputs to these models include:

Enterprise end-user penetration forecasts and market adoption analysis, including data from the total potential user population. Future market penetration data may include current/planned usage, spending plans, price elasticity and product problems/deficiencies.

Channel forecasts, including revenues, units, prices and driving forces.

Supplier forecasts of future growth rates.

Supplier forecasts of revenues, units and prices for their own companies and for the total industry.

Historical data , including shipment revenues, units and pricing.

Economic outlook data , such as GDP, employment statistics, capital spending, regional forecasts, etc.

w Supplier Share and Position. VDC supplier share and position analyses are derived directly from our team’s structured, in-depth on-site and telephone interviews as well as e-mail surveys of leading and emerging suppliers of RFID technologies under study. Our analysts use client-approved interview questionnaires and Web survey tools to poll suppliers on a broad range of topics, including specific emphasis on recent historical, current year and projected near-term shipments.

w Customer Requirements and Preferences. VDC customer requirements and preferences analysis focuses on two primary topics: (1) product selection criteria and (2) supplier selection criteria. Our analysts deploy client-approved telephone questionnaires and Web survey tools to poll current and prospective buyers of RFID products to understand recent historical, current and future preferences for various technologies, feature sets, vendors, and sources of supply. This data assists in the development of technology penetration scenarios, analysis of supplier position and direction, and evaluation of channel effectiveness.

8

w Market Opportunity Assessments. All VDC syndicated research reports include market opportunity assessments that form the basis for our summary observations and recommendations. The market opportunity assessment (MOA) is a tool that can be used to evaluate the attractiveness of any type of market segment: technology solution, feature set, vertical market, application, customer type, etc. Attributes of attractiveness that are often evaluated include level and direction of customer demand, and the industry’s ability to respond to that demand, including:

⇒ Product and technology preferences – including preferred feature sets

⇒ Service and support requirements – including preferred channels and sources

⇒ Market education, training and development needs – including preferred topics and timing

⇒ Additional factors as defined by the VDC project team and the program’s founding sponsors

♦ Market Opportunity Screening Framework. Developed by VDC analysts and consultants with experience in automatic identification and data collection solution development, the screening framework model identifies and defines 3-5 year market development opportunities. Key characteristics that the framework screens for include:

⇒ Regional markets

⇒ Vertical markets

⇒ Application segments

⇒ Core and advanced operating characteristics

♦ Industry Development and Supplier Influence Scenarios. VDC also employs models that define and weigh issues, forces and trends that are shaping the current competitive landscape. Such analysis will yield scenarios of how the future competitive landscape might take form.
