Reflecting on today’s Gospel Story, “The Woman At The Well”, we note that the Mediterranean world is divided according to gender. Women have their place, (kitchen, home), and men have

their place, ( outdoors, fields, Marketplace). The well however, is common to both men and women, but they cannot be there at the same time. Women can be at the well in the morning or evening, but in this Gospel story the woman comes to the well at noon. In this culture she comes at the wrong time and therefore the wrong place. She comes to the well at an hour when other women will properly be elsewhere because she has issues.Clearly, a cultural subversion is taking place. Could this Gospel of John be confirming new roles for women in his community? In the end she and her entire village become believers that Jesus is the Messiah and Savior of the World, and it’s all because this woman just happen to be culturally in the WRONG PLACE at the WRONG TIME. Now, could it be too big a stretch to say that perhaps, by the grace of God, she was exactly in the right place and it was in fact “her time to give witness”.Other women in history have been regarded by some to have been in the “wrong place at the wrong time”. But were they? How about Mother Teresa, Susan B Anthony, Marie Curie, Joan of Arc, Rosa Parks, Sacagawea, and a litany of women and so many even from our own Casa Community who I think that by the grace of God were and presently are in the Right Place at the Right Time. And their witness to Jesus Christ continues to be timely.

Peace and Good,

FAMILY CATECHESIS & SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION

Family Faith Activities March 19th Third Sunday of LentJesus approached a Samaritan woman and asked her for a drink of water. This action was quite the scandal as a man would never ask a woman for anything and second that Jesus, a Jew, would ask something of a Samaritan, a great enemy of the Jewish people. Jesus offers her living water and told her many things about her life. She experienced a conversion and shared what happened with many people. Although Lent is a time of penance and repentance, it is also a time to walk with our Catechumens and prepare to renew our own baptism vows! We too can experience renewal and conversion just as the Samaritan woman did! What things do you thirst for? Place this before God and be prepared to drink of the living water! Gather your family and talk about how water is necessary for all living things.

Read John 4:5-42 (you may want to paraphrase or show a video clip for younger children*) and discuss:

Where does Jesus meet the Samaritan woman? What does Jesus ask the woman for? What kind of water does Jesus offer? Does the woman accept Jesus’ gift? What does she do next?

Baptismal Font: When you go to Mass this weekend be sure to invite the whole family to bless themselves at the baptismal font. On the way home share your ideas about “living water” and how the holy water in the font is living water for everyone. You can take some water home to create your own “font”. Use a small dish or container and place this near the door so that everyone can bless themselves as they come and go during the week. Concluding Prayer: Lord renew in us the grace of our baptism, transform our thoughts, words and deeds so that we might turn away from sin and live the gospel. Amen.

First Hike for the Homeless!Saturday March 4th was the first Family Catechesis Hike for the Homeless. Families brought an incredible amount of resources to create care bags for the homeless. Water, food, personal care items, socks and even food gift cards were donated. We began with Morning Prayer with music then families “hiked” the back desert area, stopping at four places to put items into their care bags. Included was a note and prayer signed by the family and a coloring page created by the children. These bags will be given out by families to those in need whom they encounter. Kudos to our families and community for the great generosity and love that was poured out that day and every day!

VOLUNTEER VOICE – Ordinary People, Extraordinary Hearts!

“Welcome one another just as Christ has welcomed you.” Romans 15:7"

During Holy Week the Franciscan Renewal Center welcomes hundreds of guests to our campus, many of them strangers. Our Franciscan tradition calls for us to Welcome the Stranger. Part of how we can do this is through a generous and cordial welcome, making people feel that we were expecting them and are happy that they are here. All this hospitality takes lots of volunteers. If you are interested in being part of the Casa Welcome during this coming Easter, there is a place for you. You will find a sign up at the Front Desk.

Lent is a time when Christian communities pray, fast, and give alms as they listen more intently for God. We invite you use your almsgiving envelope this lent as a way to connect your fasting to your almsgiving.

Return that envelop on April 1 & 2, and we will turn that donation into food cards for our Franciscan missions and for local hunger needs.

May this season serve as a wake-up call to be mindful of the ways that our daily choices impact both “our common home” and all those with whom we share it, especially people living in poverty. Doing so, we will continue our journey to be agents of mercy in our world.

Let There Be Peace...And Let's Begin with Catholic Social TeachingSaturday, March 25, 9:00 am - 3:00 pmwith Laura LibertoreBased on biblical values and rooted in Scripture, Catholic Social Teaching invites us to live our faith, deeply, while attending to the signs of the times. It is a teaching founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came “to bring glad tidings to the poor…liberty to captives…recovery of sight to the blind” (Lk 4:18-19), and who identified himself with “the least of these,” (Mt 25:40).Join Laura in exploring the key themes and principles of Catholic Social Teaching as they apply to peacemaking and the common good, and how they shape our call to live a life of love and service in the worldNOTE: A foundation course for the Nonviolence Leadership Certificate Program. Open to everyone.

Fee: $45, includes lunch. Pre-registration required.

Serve & Study Series: The Importance of Family & CommunitySunday, April 30, 12:00 - 3:00 pmPreparing Ourselves for Dedication

Catholic teaching is very clear regarding the importance of strong and healthy families and communities: Human beings grow into their full potential when they live in strong families residing in safe and equal communities. How we organize our society—in economics and politics, in law and policy—directly affects human dignity and the capacity of individuals to grow in community. This ongoing series will cover all seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching over a period of two and a half years. This time, the service project is Habitat Service Day, no charge, but advanced signup is required at [email protected], April 30, Fee: $30 Pre-registration required. Francis is known far and wide for his integration of creation with his faith in God. Much more than the prototype for a lawn ornament, Francis truly sees God through God's creation. About the Franciscan Renewal CenterThe Franciscan Renewal Center began in 1951 as a place for retreat programs. Affectionately known as the “Casa de Paz y Bien” or simply “the Casa,” it is today a Catholic renewal center in Paradise Valley, AZ, offering spiritual growth, healing and transformation that moves lives into the service of others.

The Casa is an active religious community of the Order of Friars Minor — part of the worldwide Franciscan family, following in the footsteps of Sts. Francis and Clare of Assisi. The Casa is a wholly owned entity of the Franciscan Province of Saint Barbara, based in Oakland, CA, that works cooperatively with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Phoenix.

Activities at the Casa include daily and Sunday Mass, retreats, gathering space for non-profit groups, licensed behavioral health counseling, as well as more than 50 volunteer ministries that give aid to the poor or vulnerable, empower individuals to improve their circumstances, and build community fellowship.
