A Word from Father WilliamKeeping Advent. Every now and then I meet another priest or liturgist who chides me for having “Christmas” parties during Advent, and putting up the Christmas Tree before Christmas Eve, and singing Christmas carols before the feast of Christmas. I admit I am not a liturgical purist when it comes to Advent and Christmas. When I was growing up we had Midweek Advent Services for the four weeks of Advent. The first half of the service was singing Christmas carols and the second half was Advent Vespers. Everyone understood that Advent was Advent and we were sing-ing carols to “warm up” for Christmas. I think people can make distinctions. Advent is important because it reminds us of our longing for Christ to come again. Indeed, we should light our Advent wreaths at home, spend more time in quiet prayer and reflection, make time for a good confession, and prepare our hearts and minds for Christ to enter in. But if by chance you find yourself enjoying a Christmas carol during the days of Advent, it won’t hurt you. Let it be part of your preparation for Christmas and may the memory of his first coming encourage you to hope for him to come again!

Profiles in FaithDennis Ouchi

Dennis lived next door to ROL on Penakii Street for 36 years before he came to know Christ two and a half years ago. His wife, Judy, was an active member however, and she often prayed for him. But it wasn’t until Judy’s diagnosis with pancreatic cancer that her prayers for Dennis were answered.

Tell us about Judy and her faith. Many years ago when my mother died, Judy tried to talk to me about God and her hope in eternal life. At the time, and grieving for my mom, I wasn’t open to what she was trying to share with me. She practiced her faith quietly but faith-fully. She would go to daily Mass, say her prayers, especially the Rosary, and contributed to the Church. When Judy got sick, her faith took on even more importance. She would pray all day and night, and it gave her a lot of strength.

What happened after she passed away?I missed her very much, and I began to wonder whether there is something after this life. I wondered where we go when we die? I had a lot of questions. Eventually, I wanted to find out more about God and the Church. So after the funeral, I started going to ROL. When the opportunity arose to become Catholic, I decided to check it out, mostly because I wanted answers to my questions.

What was it like to go through RCIA?Going in I didn’t know anything, but coming out I realized I learned quite a bit about God and the Church. In fact, I would share what I learned with my Catholic friend and she grew in her faith too! The teachings helped me to not only learn about our Catholic beliefs but to connect those beliefs to my life.

What are your memories of your baptism at the Easter Vigil? What really got me were the different rites along the way. Slowly I was introduced to the community and with each step, I felt more and more of the community’s acceptance and love for me. I truly felt welcomed and like I had found a spiritual home.

How are you involved in the parish today? Now I go to daily Mass and Sunday Mass, and I’m part of the Men’s Group, the ROL Golf Club, and I help clean the church once a month. The church has really become a big part of my life and I’ve made many new friends.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining the Church? Just try it. Bring your questions. Come to your own conclusions. In taking that first step toward God you lose nothing and possibly gain everything!

PASKO! PASKOCelebrating Misa De Gallo at ROL

The Filipino tradition of the Misa de Gallo (translated “Mass of the Rooster”) continues to gain popularity in our diocese and parish. Filipinos and non-Filipinos have grown fond of these pre-dawn Masses celebrat-ed on the nine days before Christmas (December 16 – 24). It is really a Christmas novena of Masses to prepare us spiritually for the birth of the Savior.

In the Philippines, the tradition was first introduced by the Spanish in the 16th century. The Masses were celebrated early in the morning so that fishermen and farmers could attend. Here in Hawaii, the Misa de Gallo was introduced (or reintroduced) by the many contract priests who come from the Philippines to serve in our diocese. According to Father William, “We have really been blessed by their presence and their gifts, and the Misa de Gallo is one of them! The cultural sharing that takes place is mutually beneficial and our local Church has been enriched.”

Part of the spiritually of the Misa de Gallo is the aspect of sacrifice, namely the sacrifice of sleep! It is hard to get up that early in the darkness of the winter months, but it gets easier as you go as evidenced by the increasing attendance as Christmas draws near. It is said that you should make a wish at the begin-ning of the Misa de Gallo and if you attend all nine mornings your wish will be granted! Of course, if you make that kind of time for prayer and worship in your life, God will touch your life.

Misa de Gallo is also a great opportunity for evange-lization. Many people will attend who don’t usually attend Sunday Mass. They will go for cultural rea-

sons or in support of other family members who want to attend. Because of the hospitality they experience, many decide to return to the practice of their faith.

Here at Resurrection, the Dominican Sisters organize a special Misa de Gallo Choir that leads the assem-bly in many favorite Filipino Christmas songs from the Philippines like, Pasko Na Naman, Misa De Gallo, and Malamig Ang Simoy Ng. Yes, we sing them in Taga-log and English, and all the service music is in Tagalog! Even Father William sings the Amanamin (Our Father) in Tagalog!

After Mass, it is customary to have a large breakfast. Here at ROL, our different parish ministries take turns sponsoring the breakfast, and they really go all out! There is usually ariscaldo (rice soup), pancit, champ-orado (chocolate rice), lumpia, eggs, sausages, fried rice, pan de sol, fresh fruit, and the Knights of Colum-bus always treat us to fresh made pancakes!

One of the special features of the Misa de Gallo at ROL is that we show the ABS-CBN Christmas videos from the Philippines during the breakfast. These vid-eos highlight all the different Christmas traditions in the Philippines and how people come together during this season as family, friends, parish, and community.

If you haven’t experienced the Misa de Gallo yet, come and try it out! You’ll be glad you did!

HOLY LAND & ROME MEMORIES

The pictures displayed here (left to right) are the place where Je-sus Christ was born, a chapel in the Basilica of the Nativity where

we celebrated Holy Mass, the Holy Father imparting a blessing during a general audience, the actual venerated manger that our

savior was laid in and the place where the angel Gabriel appeared before Mary with great news to tell.

Blessing of a Christmas Tree

Lord our God,we praise you for the light of creation:

the sun, the moon and the stars of the night. We praise you for the light of Israel:

the Law, the prophets, and the wisdomof the Scriptures.

We praise you for Jesus Christ, your Son:he is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace,

who fills us with the wonder of your love.

Lord God,let your blessing come upon us

as we illumine this tree.May the light and cheer it gives

be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts.May all who delight in this tree

come to the knowledge and joy of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

TWO-FOLD ADVENT SEASONBy: Zachary Ramones

As we all know, Advent is a season of preparation for the birth of Jesus Christ. We contemplate, through prayer and reflection, the birth of our Savior so that when Christmas comes, we are ready to receive him in our hearts.

But what many don’t know is that the Advent season also has another symbolic understanding. As we remember his First Coming, we also anticipate his promised Second Coming. If you listen closely to the readings during the four Sundays of Advent, you’ll notice that the first two weeks focus primarily on the anticipation of the Second Coming and the last two weeks focus more on the brith of Jesus.

This is to remind us that although we are celebrating the birth of Jesus, we must always prepare ourselves for the Second Coming when Christ will come again in glory.
