1. Thy life was given for me, 4. Thou, Lord, has borne for me

thy blood, O Lord, was shed, more than my tongue can tell

that I might ransomed be of bitterest agony,

and quickened from the dead; to rescue me from hell;

thy life was given for me; thou sufferedst all for me;

what have I given for thee? what have I borne for thee?

2. Long years we spent for me 5. And thou has brought to me

in weariness and woe, down from thy home above

that through eternity salvation full and free,

they glory I might know; thy pardon and thy love;

long years were spent for me; great gifts thou broughtest me;

have I spent one for thee? what have I brought to thee?

3. Thy Father’s home of light, 6. O let my life be given,

thy rainbow-circled throne, my years for thee be spent;

were left for earthly night, world-fetters all be riven,

for wanderings sad and lone; and joy with suffering blent;

yea, all was left for me; thou gavest thyself for me,

have I left aught for thee? I give myself to thee. [Frances Ridley Havergal:-Tune - Kenosis: ]

Being God’s People in God’s World – Sustained and Serving by Faith

Father of Jesus, broken and dying, tormented and lonely we have no words which can express the shame of this day. Your only Son, uniquely loved, hangs bleeding because of us, crying for our forgiveness. We deserve nothing, Lord, Night covers our world, our hearts, our lives. What a mystery, Lord, belongs to this day.

What secrets it holds for every century, every nation and every soul. Let Jesus, crucified and raised, bind up the wounds of every suffering community and lift the cloud of guilt which covers the earth. Only then can we be surprised by your joy and greet your resurrection day.

CALL TO WORSHIP

HYMN OF PRAISE: No. 1 - #231 We sing the praise of Him who died

1.We sing the praise of him who died 3. The cross, it takes our guilt away, of him who died upon the cross; it holds the fainting spirit up; the sinner’s hope let men deride, it cheers with hope the gloomy day, for this we count the world but loss. and sweetens every bitter cup. 2. Inscribed upon the cross we see, 4. It makes the coward spirit brave, in shining letters, ‘God is love’, and nerves the feeble arm for fight; he bears our sins upon the tree, it takes the terror from the grave, he brings us mercy from above. and gilds the bed of death with light.

5. The balm of life, the cure of woe, the measure and the pledge of love; the sinner’s refuge here below the angels’ theme in heaven above. [Thomas Kelly – Tune : LM]

RESPONSIVE READING - Leader: Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.

The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his

head. They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again

and again, saying, ‘Hail King of the Jews’

People: And they struck him in the face.

Leader: When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple

robe, Pilate said to them, ‘Here is the man!’ As soon as the chief

priests and their officials saw him, they shouted,

People: ‘Crucify! Crucify!

Leader: Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.

Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull

[which in Aramaic is called Golgotha]. People: Here they crucified him, and with him two others –

one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

Leader: Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross.

It read:

People: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS

Leader: Later, knowing that all was now completed,

and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said,

People: ‘I am thirsty’.

Leader: A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it,

put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to

Jesus’ lips. When he had received the drink, Jesus said,

ALL: ‘It is finished’.

With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

SONGS OF WORSHIP Above all powers, above all kings

Above all nature and all created things

Above all wisdom and all the ways of man

You were here before the world began

Above all kingdoms, above all thrones

Above all wonders the world has ever known Above all wealth and treasures of the earth

There's no way to measure what You're worth

CHORUS: Crucified, laid behind a stone

You lived to die, rejected and alone

Like a rose trampled on the ground

You took the fall and thought of me, above all

Lord, I lift your name on high

Lord, I love to sing your praises

I’m so glad you’re in my life

I’m so glad you came to save us.

You came from heaven to earth to show the way

From the earth to the cross my debt to pay

From the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky

Lord, I lift your name on high.
