3D printing technol-ogy in India is getting used for both proto-
typing and personalised manufacturing, with ap-plications in Architecture, Engineering and Indus-trial Design, Aerospace, Military, Civil Engineering and medical industries, Biotech, Home Decor and many more. But one in-dustry where 3D printing
has great potential that has yet to be realized is fashion. From mass-mar-ket production to running off customizedgarments to pick up in shops or have delivered to the home, this can be the fashion state-ment of the future.
3D printing is a process of making three dimen-sional solid objects from a digital file. The creation of a 3D printed object is achieved using additive processes where an object is created by laying down successive layers of mate-rial until the object is cre-ated. This technology has a great scope in fashion as this innovative new way of body scanning allows us to createcustomized, rare and perfect fitted garments.
Famous Dutch fashion Designers like Iris van Herpen are true vision-aries who seek to make the invisible world visible and create garments that transcend mere trends but spur thoughtful and in-vestigative conversations.
She is the first designer to introduce this technology in fashion, and to create astonishing designs.
The biggest positive is that 3D printing could lower the barrier to en-try for fashion designers, and level the playing field, making it possible for smaller designers to go up against the larger retail-ers. Also, they won’t need to rely on retailers buy-ing their clothes anymore and it can create new income streams. On the other hand, this technol-ogy also eliminates waste by being able to print the exact size of panel for each garment. Product qual-ity will also improve, since 3-D printing will eliminate the occasional human error that creeps into traditional garment manufacturing.
One major problem has been with the materials. The synthetic materials that are commercially available at present for 3D printing, are not comfort-able or flexible enough for
clothing. Although there are many international designers like Iris Van Harpen, Karl Largerfeld, Alexis Walsh and Danit Peleg has worked on this new technology and have come up with amazing collections but growth of 3D Fashion Printing is very slow in India and restricted to accessories only.
So whilst 3D printing is a tricky subject with so many positive and nega-tive angles to consider. Indian fashion indus-try really needs a shake up, and in a time when the biggest buzzwords are ‘sustainability’ and ‘make in India,’ 3D print-ing could be the one thing that moves us towards those two goals on a scale that has never been done before. The only chal-lenge is to market and promote this quite ex-pensive product because many people don’t know about 3d printing and additive manufacturing technologies in India.
