MONTGOMERY COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEMBER OF THE MONTH Susan Carol Weakly Elliott
(1940—2016)
Susan Carol Weakly Elliott was born and raised in the Cumberland Heights community of Montgomery County across the Cumberland River from downtown Clarksville, TN. She was active in 4-H in the county and state and she attended the 4-H Congress in Chicago. She graduated from Clarksville High School (CHS). Susan graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UTK) with a major in textiles and clothing from the School of Home Economics. She started dating a hometown boy, C. David Elliott while at UTK and after graduat-
ing they were married February 9. 1963 at the First Christian Church, Clarksville, TN They were married for 53 years.
Susan worked for four and a half years as home service advisor for the rural electric co-op, Cumber-land Electric (CEMC). She left to start their family: two boys who as adults married and there are now five grandchildren. Susan also worked demonstrating appli-ance for the family business, Phillips Elliott plus other retail-ers in Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky and later worked with David for 25 years in their insurance agency before retiring. Susan was an active quilter and published a book in 2011 featuring her quilts. This book shows almost all of her quilts which the family loves and uses. Chuck, the oldest son, told his Mom, “I use my quilts you made for me, everyday. I may not be able to pass them on.” Quilting is an art form and Susan believed in perfection and usually knew who she was planning to gift it when she started the project. She wanted it to be right as it was a gift. Susan last quilt was completed in time for a Christmas present in 2009 to daughter-in-law, Susan Wilson Elliott. Five mostly completed but not quilted pieces, ranging in size from wall hangings to queen, were finished by Denise Coul-ter, Cumberland City, TN September 2014. In May 2014 the majority of Su-san’s fabrics were donat-ed to Trinity Baptist Church ladies group through niece Jennifer Weakley to make dolls for traumatized children in Montgomery County. The group presented Su-san a doll stating “with gratitude.” There are still some smaller pieces to be completed. Susan became a victim of Alzheimer's disease and passed away Saturday. April 23, 2016. Her information and pictures were provided by her husband C David Elliott. Our sympathies go out to C David. Susan will be missed by the MCHS Membership. Biography included in the book published 2011, “Quilts by Susan Weakley Elliott.” Updated and reprinted April 23. 2016 –cde HP laptop “Susan’s Quilts” MS Word

Clarksville Chronicle 2 Jul. 1858, Fri. Page 3 Fourth OF July .—W. R. Bringhurst, Eq., will deliver a speech, at the court House, on to-morrow night, in honor of the 82nd Anniversary of American Independence. "The public generally, and the ladies in particular, are invited to attend. There will, also, be sung some National songs, by the best vocalists of the city, which will add a lively interest to the occasion. Clarksville Chronicle 30 Jul. 1858, Fri. Page 3 In days of yore, we had two excellent Fire Companies, which by their con-quests in times of conflagration did service great, and at others by their drills and emulous contests for supremacy rendered agreeably exciting many dull Saturday evenings Now how sad the change—no contests and of course dull Saturdays and frightened property holders. We understand these companies need money—the city, has given some--but will not the citizens present as a tribute of acknowledged service and utility to both companies, that which they so much need—hose -we mean Engine Hose. Time and labor is enough for the Firemen to give. Look to your interests and encourage this otherwise palsied arm of defense and tower of strength. Get the hose, and give it to them—they will not go and beg you for it, and you need it Clarksville Chronicle 15 Jul. 1859, Fri - Page 3 Mr. Cave Johnson requests those persons who may have odd volumes from his Library, to return them, or leave them at the office of Humphreys & Johnson. Sarsaparilla has long been famous as a spring remedy to purify the blood and invigorate the system, but Dr. Hurley offers it to the world in a form that defies competition—not only for its supe-rior quality, but from the fact that many eminent physicians, having used it in their practice, esteem it as the tonic of the age.—Lou. Times. Clarksville Weekly Chronicle 20 Jul. 1866, Fri. Page 2 "Gen. Sherman has little faith in treaties with the aborigines. He says the Indians will sign a treaty with one hand and snatch a scalp with the other." The poor Indians should not be too severely censured by Sherman, for he made a treaty with Gen. Jo. Johnson, and the ink was hardly dry before Wirz lost his scalp. The conduct of the Radical Government towards paroled Confederates is far baser than anything Indians can do, in the way of breaking treaties. (From the author) The above article is not entirely true. Heinrich (Henry) Hartmann Wirz was a Captain in the Confederate Army, and the commander of the infamous Ander-sonville prison in Georgia. Wirz was charged with the deaths of 13 union soldiers and convicted of 11. He was not scalped but was hanged 10 Nov. 1865. The rope did not break Wirz’s neck, so he ended up suffocating to death,

Men and women mingled in the fray. A saloon keeper, named Myers had his skull fractured. Mrs. Myers was assaulted by Emma Banks, with an ale bottle, and dragged around promiscu-ously. The sheriff summoned help and went out and arrested all the partici-pants he could find—but the man who struck Myers had fled. The sheriff re-leased them upon their own recognizance. Chief of police, Carcuff, re-arrested them in the evening and compelled them to give bond. A. T. Clarksville, Tenn., July 27.—Timothy Giles, a colored youth, of Woodlawn, this county, is reported to have died last night from the effects of a blow on the forehead with an inkstand in the hands of William M. Daniels, Jr., a prominent young attorney of this city and member of a leading family. Last Monday during a lawsuit Giles was on the witness stand, and the trouble was regarding the manner in which he testified. Daniel being one of the attorneys, throwing the inkstand during court. The animal is supposed to have gotten loose from some small show or organ grinder, and is terrorizing the people In the eastern part of the county. Charles Britt was attacked by the animal during the night while on his way home. He succeeded in escaping over a fence and reached a house before the bear got to him. Bear tracks were found leading off into the woods the next morning, and a posse has been formed to track down the beast.
The Tennessean (Nashville, Tennessee) 16 Jul. 1907, Tue. Page 8 IN MONTGOMERY Seven Acres of Plants Belonging to Association Members Destroyed. CLARKSVILLE, Tenn., July 15.—(Special.)—Night riders visited three farms in the Sixth District and destroyed seven acres of tobacco. The farm operated by G. N. Gentry (it being the Alex Warfield farm) was visited by the marauders and four acres of tobacco pulled up. The farms of Ross and Reuben Bellamy also suffered, each losing one and two acres of tobacco respectively. There is no clue to the guilty party. All of the party were members of the asso-ciation but Gentry, it is said, had planted about four Acres above the schedule allowed. The Bellamy boys had bought several crops of tobacco, part of which was owned by the "hill billies," but all of it was sold through the association. Hopkinsville Kentuckian (Hopkinsville, KY) • 18 Jul. 1907, Thu • Page 8 BUSY IN TENNESSEE. Night Riders Destroy Tobacco Crops Because of Too Large Acreage. Clarksville, Tenn., July 12.—Night riders Saturday night visited the tobacco field of G. N. Gentry, of St. Bethlehem and destroyed four acres of tobacco. He has been a member of the association and has held his crop through the regular channels. The only cause for the action so far as can be guessed is that he had planted about four acres more than the schedule allows. The same night Ross, and Reuben Bellamy were visited and two acres destroyed for Ross and one for Reuben. These men bought a lot of tobacco last year and while they sold it through the association this is supposed to have been the cause of their disturbance. (From the author) It may seem I have misspelled or punctuated some words wrong, but this is the way the newspaper had them printed, so for historical purposes I left them as printed. In the future this will always be done this way.
