Dear Reidville Family,

It is hard to believe that time is flying by! Our students and teachers are working diligently together to keep our focus on learning. We want to continue to put your child’s academics interests first and we need your

help to ensure success for your child by partnering with us. Reading with your child nightly, checking over your child’s homework, and staying involved in your child’s education, are keys to their achievement as you are teaching them the importance of their schoolwork.

Please continue to emphasize regular attendance in school as this will set a pattern for your child’s entire school career. Show your child that school comes first by trying to keep days off only for illnesses or family

emergencies. Also, please try to schedule routine doctor and dentist appointments for after school or over school breaks.

Thank you, parents, for your support and for trusting us to take care of your child here at Reidville Elemen-tary School. Our motto is the “School that Cares” and we really care about and love each of our Rockets!

Please know that we encourage you to become more involved in our school. You may want to volunteer with

our PTO, be a part of our School Improvement Council, or ask your child’s teacher what you can do to help.

We would love to have you here!

School Dist. 5 with the means to enroll their children in a specific school based on an identified need. When

requesting School choice, parents/legal guardians must agree to transport the student; ensure punctuality/

daily attendance and behavior acceptable to school administration; and be accessible to the school as need-

ed. School Choice forms have been mailed to students who currently attend on LSC, or you may obtain a

form in the school Office.

Healthy Hints from Nurse Amy

Reminders concerning district medication policy:

Cough drops are not allowed

All medications (including over-the-counter medications) must be approved by stu-dent’s physician and medications must have physician prescription to be adminis-tered at school

All medications will be kept in the Health Room

If you have questions concerning a medication, please do not hesitate to call Amy Nunnery, RN, at 949-2388

Some mornings can be very chaotic at home, but please never send a medication to school with your child that he/she normally takes before arriving to school. These medi-cations will be taken and will remain in Health Room until an adult comes to pick them up. Also, please remember, we must be able to reach a parent in case of sickness or an emergency WITHIN 15 MINUTES. Please be sure to always update us with changes to your contact phone numbers for either or both parents. These are all safe guards for your child and all the children at Reidville Elementary.

G R A D E L E V E L N E W S . . .

In K5, we recently finished our 100th day celebration to show we are 100 days smarter. Students enjoyed completing all our 100 day

activities such as eating 100 pancakes, counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s and even making ourselves look 100 years old. In ELA,

kindergarten students wrote and published their own books, after we completed an author study on Donald Crews. In math, we are

busy learning about addition with many fun, hands-on activities. In science, we are studying matter and to activate our learning we

conducted three experiments as we observed changes in matter. The best experiment was the elephant toothpaste!

What’s happening in fourth grade?

Fourth Grade Frenzy

The Charleston countdown has begun!

Learning fractions is fabulous fun. Revolution and U.S. Government,

Text structures and experiments….

Tons we’re tackling in fourth grade,

Our students deserve accolades.

We congress on a zillion topics each day,

And reinforce with music videos – HOORAY!

What’s a circuit, who’s our prez,

The Scientific Method says.

Fraction strips and bars and towers…

They are full of learning, fourth grade hours.

First grade has been hard at work this Quarter. In reading and writing we are working on research and writing nonfiction books. In

science we are doing a fascinating study of the day and night sky. Students have been observing the night sky from home and talk-

ing about the phases of the moon. On the 100th day we did some exciting math activities and enjoyed a 100 item snack! We are

excited about the rest of our learning adventure and can't wait for our field trip to the Children's museum in March!

Second grade is enjoying the New Year! We’ve been busy setting goals and working on ways to accomplish them. Second graders

are working to continue moving up in their reading levels. We are very proud of them! Our concentration in ELA has been fiction-

al texts with a high concentration on structure and story elements. Our students enjoyed writing a fictional story and creating a mod-

el of their main character. In math, we have completed Addition and Subtraction units. We can carry and borrow with the best of

them. We need to continue to work on our fast facts – addition and subtraction. Mastery of these facts is super important as we look ahead to 3rd grade. We are moving on to Money and Time units. In social studies we will be exploring the world of Econom-

ics. In science, we are enjoying our weather unit and the exciting weather experiments and activities we have been doing.

The third grade teachers are so proud of all that our students are accomplishing! We are rocking and rolling in all subjects! In writ-

ing, we are working to learn how to write on demand. Personal narratives are center stage this semester and the students are writing

some entertaining and engaging stories about their life. In Social Studies, the kids are sitting on the edge of their seats, eager to learn

about the Civil War! Lastly, we were so excited to visit the Chapman Cultural Center, where we saw a play and visited the Science

Center and History museum! All of the cool science standards and history came to life. We took part in hands-on experiments and

saw documents and artifacts from hundreds of years ago. It was a memorable day and we are grateful for the opportunity to have an

experience like that right in Spartanburg.

In our K4 class, we have been reading stories and making self-to-text connections to them. We read The Snowy Day and Wemberly

Worried and drew pictures and wrote about our connections. We also learned how to think about what we are reading and how to

make predictions as we read. We loved reading the book Do Not Open This Book! We were excited about the predictions we made

and excited to finally finish the story to see if our predictions were correct In math we are also very busy practicing our counting

skills, as we count our way to our 100th Day of School celebration.

The BEST Breakfast

By Ben Wykel, Wilson 4th

My Bad Day By Grayson Stanis, Hanke 3rd

My dad’s breakfast sandwich is the best because it is greasy but still good! The ingredients

are tiny sausage pieces, eggs, buttered toast, bacon, and my dad’s SECRET INGREDIENT.

The toast goes first, then the bacon, then the eggs, and finally (again) the toast. It is pretty

healthy. The eggs give you protein. So do you like it? Are you drooling or not?

Martin Luther King Jr. was a good man.

Martin did not like segregation.

He worked to stop segregation.

He gave a long speech. Martin said I have a dream.

He wanted to be happy. He loved happiness.

Martin won the Nobel Peace Prize.

That’s a big prize. Dr. Martin liked freedom.

He loved freedom. Martin got assassinated.

He got shot in a hotel. Martin Luther King Jr. changed the world.

When I woke up one morning, I put my feet on the floor, took a step … and tripped! I had

stepped on my monster truck. It really hurt. Then I asked my parents if I could play on my

iPad. They said no. Later, I went to Caleb’s house. While we were playing football outside,

I fell and hurt my knee. It ended our game and I went home. Before dinner, my family and I

decided to walk our dog. I thought it would be fun to ride my scooter instead of walking.

Guess what? I fell off. And then to really top the night off, we had steamed vegetables for

dinner! I didn’t know if the day could be any worse.
