In the First week more attention was given inremedial classes with basic grammar, tense, phoneticsand public speech. All of them found very difficult tocop up with the classes in the first week because theynever had such opportunities and exposure. Many ofthem even made calls to their parents saying thatEnglish is very difficult. They also even told theirparents that teachers are very strict and very frighteningbecause the students cannot speak a single Englishword, we insisted to speak. It was first time theylearnt to formulate a correct sentence. Thus they gotconfidence and gained lot of courage to learn English.

After a week, students seemed to be stumblingin English. They can game their English languageduring conversation. We shut our mouth whenthe students tried to talk in Hindi around us but wewere happy to see them learning, progressing andgaining confidence in English. They all learnt verywell to formulate sentence but could not have courageto have a small dialogue. The activities like - publicspeeches, phonetics, were trace to twist their tongues. All were given opportunities for conversation. Theywere made to speak two by two and in a group.Sometimes they were asked to dialogue with us. Thusthey got the taste of speaking. Lot of encouragement

R.P. Provincial presided over the Holy Mass, after whichwe visited the tomb ofSt. Francis of Assisi and the major basilica. Justinand Christdhari had arranged everything so well that at theend, our pilgrimage to Assisi turned out to be a sort ofpicnic too. On Sunday, Justin took him to the Vaticanmuseum for a guided tour of the Sistine Chapel. Afterreceiving the blessings from the Holy Father during theSunday Angelus, R.P. Provincial was accorded a heartywelcome at the Gregorian Community for lunch. He washappy to meet Professors and some of the authorities ofthe University. In the afternoon, he visited the majorBasilicas of Rome. Among all other things, going up theHoly Stairs on knees was altogether a new and enrichingexperience for him. Late in the evening, Justin showed himRome by night starting from Piazza Navona, a favorite placefor the tourists for beautiful sculptures, paintings and culturalshows. After two days of rest and relaxation, R.P. Provincialjoined the group of the new Provincials in the Curia fortheir colloquium which began on Monday.

On 1st of May, along with the feast of St. Josephthe Worker and the Workers' Day, we celebrated thebirthday of R.P. Provincial. In the evening, we prayed forhim during the Holy Mass in one of Chapels of GregorianUniversity, during which exhorted us to be faithful to ourmission in Rome. During the festive meal, he presented abrief sketch of some of the areas of concern and apprisedus of his vision for the Ranchi Province. Indeed, his birthdaycelebration turned out to be a very encouraging andmeaningful meeting. At the end of the celebration, he wassurprised to receive shirts with Roman collar as a kind andloving gesture of best wishes for his mission. He will leavefor Guyana via London immediately after the conclusionof the colloquium on 12 May.

MINIA, EGYPTIn the month of April, Egypt occasionally experiences duststorms brought by the hot winds that are characteristics ofdesert climate. This year after the mid-April, it hasn't beeneasy to face it. Often whole towns and villages have beenenveloped by dust storms and heavy winds causingdamages to the standing crops and health of the people. On April 8 - 9, Near East Jesuit Provincial and his delegatesfrom Lebanon and Syria had gathered in Cairo to assessthe fast emerging unpredictable political situations and the

DIASPORAGREGORIAN UNIVERSITY ROMELike many other Pontifical Universities in Rome, GregorianUniversity was closed for the Easter holidays just beforethe Palm Sunday. A number of community members wentto different Parishes and Institutions to extend their helpinghands in hearing confessions or in assisting the liturgicalservices of the Holy Week. Some went to guide theSpiritual Exercises. Justin and Linus had gone to twodifferent northern Parishes of Italy.

On the eve of Palm Sunday, we received the newsthat Fr. Jacob Srampickal (PAT), a Professor in theCommunication Department, had fallen unconscious andwas in coma. He had gone to visit some of his family friendsin Austria. Last year, he had a stroke while he was teachingin JDV Pune. He had recovered miraculously and comeback to Gregorian University in February to resume histeaching activities. After remaining almost for two weeksin coma, he breathed his last on 14 April. His body wasbrought to Rome and on 20 April, a solemn funeral HolyMass was held in the Church of St. Ignatius, which waspresided over by the Superior of the Jesuit community.Apart from planning every detail of the celebration incollaboration with the students, I officiated the last ritesand read the message of His Beatitude Mar GeorgeAlencherry, Major Archbishop of the Syro-MalabarChurch, who termed the death of Jacob as "a great loss tothe Church in India".

On 27 April, R.P. Provincial arrived in Rome Airportalmost on time from Delhi via London. He had to rush inLondon to board the connecting flight to Rome. Since hisluggage could not make it on time, he had to wait insidethe airport for the arrival of the next flight from London. We waited anxiously on the arrival lounge for him almostfor three hours. On his arrival, he was accorded a heartywelcome with garland; quite unusual for Rome, but Justinand Linus had decided rightly to welcome him intraditional Indian way. His first visit before entering theCuria was a prayerful night stroll along thebeautiful St. Peter's Square, where Christdhari (MAP) waswaiting with his photo camera to take a snap of smilingRanchi men.

On 28 April, we led him to a pilgrimage toAssisi, the City of peace. For the Eucharistic celebration, our Gregorian students belonging to the Third Order hadarranged a beautiful Chapel which forms part of thebasement of the ancestral home of St. Francis of Assisi.

Jesuits' role there. It was moving and heart-rending to hearthe Jesuits from Cyria. The 14-month old uprising againstPresident Bashar-al-Asaad is taking a serious turn. Foreignbacked rebel armed groups are now in constant retaliationand attack. It is a war of pro and anti- Asaad forces andthere is no end to casualties!

LET US REMEMBER IN OUR PRAYERSFr. James Lakra, SJ (69), passed away on 21 April 2012.Sri Augustine Guria (88), father of Fr. Cyril Guria died on 22 April 2012.

BROTHER HILARIUS TOPPO, S.J.(July 11, 1927 - December 10, 2011)

Brother Hilarius was born on 11th July 1927 inKapodih, Gumla. Eldest among the three brothers,Hilarius was second in the family of four children ofJohn Toppo and Monica Tirkey. He did his primary tohigh school at Majhatoli. His father died when he wasin class XI which forced him to discontinue hisschooling and began to look after the house andfarming. Three years later (1940) his mother sent himback to the school. After doing his Pre-University, Hilariusbegan teaching in a school in Sitagarha, Hazaribagand support his family.

Hilarius found teaching about fifty little kinds inthe class pretty interesting, quite suitable to hisvision of life of service. He continued his teaching inthe school for three years. Meanwhile his younger brothergrew up and became capable of supporting the family. He, then, thought of a better way to realize his dreamto serve- beyond the limits of his own family- to the largerworld where he could render the best of his service.Attracted by the hard and vigorous work and life of theJesuit Brothers in Sitagarha, he decided to become areligious Brother and joined the Society of Jesus as apostulant, eventually entering the novitiate in 1950 atSt. Stanislaus' College Sitagarha.

Hilarius, soon after completing his Juniorate, was given the charge of tailoring and Kitchen ofSSC Sitagarha (1954 - 1960). In addition, after histertianship in Shembaganur and the final vows andvocational training in Mumbai, he was made Ministerof the House (1967-70) in Sitagarha. Other majorplaces of his services were- St. Albert's College Ranchi(1971 - 1984), Papal Seminary, Pune (1984 - 1988),and Manresa House Ranchi (1988 - 1992) wherehe looked after the Kitchen with great care andinterest. In Manresa (1988-92) and in St. Albert's College(1993 - 2000) he undertook the office of the Minister ofthe House and proved himself a faithful and worthyservant. Hilarius' appointment as the minister and

treasurer in a smaller community of Bundu (2000-03)was a short of break after years of his service in majorhouses of the province and the Assistancy. When theCollege -Juniorate was revived in Manresa House, hisservice was again required there to look after thekitchen. This is the place from where he retired fromactive ministry of serving (2003-11), by taking care ofdaily temporal needs of ours in the communities.

As a religious brother, Hilarius worked practicallywhole of his life as kitchen in-charge and as minister ofthe house. Getting up early each day, going to the kitchenfor inspection of the menu, attending Holy Mass, andexcept for a fixed time for marketing, spending thewhole day in the kitchen instructing, guiding andhelping the cooks and helpers, getting the food readyfor the community on time without fail, was a remarkablesign of his dedication and commitment to the workentrusted to him by his Superiors. This, however, was notwithout some doubt that troubled him at one point oftime, thinking that such work was disturbing his growthin relationship with God. The main reason was that hewas not able to afford enough time for his personalprayers. At another point of his life, his commitmentbecame for him his personal prayer. Here he capitalizedthe Lord's saying in the Gospel, "The Son of Mancame not to be served but to serve."(Mk 10, 45).

Service was the most important thing for Hilarius. It was the fruit of his prayer. While cutting vegetableshe would meditate, in a true sense, a man of contemplationin action. Once it was time for meal, he would wait for thecommunity to come together for meals and when it wasover, he would be the last one to leave the refectory. As tohis personal devotion, besides daily attendance at theHoly Mass, visits to the Blessed Sacrament- aftermeals gave him much consolation. If he would miss theHoly Mass for any reason, he would feel restless. Othertimes, when he would be very tired he would whispersaying, "Thank you Lord, for I could do something."

early age. This experience helped Hilarius to be awise and capable care-taker of the house. As a goodadministrator, he was always concerned aboutimprovements whether of the farm or of the kitchenor of the house. While being deeply conscious aboutpoverty in the Society, he tried to maintain certainstandard of living in the house that the communitycould afford and be happy. Small complaints wouldcome at times about him but no one could evenquestion his integrity, his efficiency at work, dedicationto his assigned duty and his spirit of service.

Owing to his growing age, difficulty in breathingand in carrying out his assigned duty in the kitchen,Hilarius had requested his Superiors to be relievedfrom his responsibility. Thus, in February 2010, heretired from active work and stayed in the infirmary, quietly moving in the corridors of Manresa Houseand faithfully following all the daily routines tillcame 10 December 2011 morning, when after he hadcommunion with the Lord at the Holy Eucharist andreturned to his room, this faithful servant, heard hisMaster calling didn't and without any hesitation, saidhis "YES" to him and quietly went to meet him.

Fr. Prabhat K. Soreng

His community life was equally fascinating as hisspirituality and the passion for service was. Though spend-ing most of his time in the kitchen, he would spare time togo to the recreation room and spendsome time with other members of the community. He spoke less but he communicated more by what hedid- through his act of service and the manner in which hedid. His interaction with the students- seminarians andscholastics- was seldom and yet, he knew them well aspersons and could surprise them with veryapt observation on their character. His concern forthe co-workers in the kitchen or of the house was a knownfact. Those who supplied provisions for the kitchenappreciated him for his kind dealing withthem. As minister of the house, his sensitivity towards theneeds of the individual members was remarkable.

Brother Hilarius had learnt the hard ways.He knew how to keep himself cool and carry out hisduty as usual in difficult situations. This came to himfrom the personal experience of his own life. He wouldbe heard saying, "If God loves, he gives difficulties as well."Although he never went through any major difficulty,he found God's love in little tensions inhis work. Being the eldest boy in the family, he hadunderstood his responsibility towards his familyand took it seriously thus, attaining maturity at an

Fr. IGNATIUS DUNGDUNG, S.J(26 Nov. 1941 - 20 December 2012)

In June 1961 a young man of nineteen came toMinor Seminary of Ranchi after completion of hisHigh School from St. Mary's Samtoli. With his broadforehead and long neck he looked tall though he wasjust 5'6" in height. On his lips there played a gentleand perpetual smile, which was an invitation forfriendship and affirmation that you are liked andappreciated by him. This bewitching smile, later onwon for him many friends and admirers. After completing his religious studies Ignatius wasdestined to be an educator. He endeared himself bybeing a friend and guide to students. As a prefect ofthe hostel he was always surrounded by the boarderssometimes just for friendly chats or for some inspirationaladvice . He served the High Schools in variouscapacities, first as a prefect, Vice Principal, Principal inSt. John's Ranchi, Loyola Khunti and St. Stanislaus'Lohardaga. Computer Education and Karate Training

at Loyola Khunti owe to his dream. The school bandparty, which has been leading the district parade onIndependence and Republic Days for more than25 years, is a rich contribution to the district. For manyyears, he was at the helm of High Schools butmanagement was not his forte. He heavily relied on hisstaff and sometimes on outsides who took undueadvantage of his simplicity and guilelessness.

Ignatius was soft spoken, never raised his voice, even in time of crises and obstacles he never lostserenity. He was more than a gentleman. He shunned tobe on vanguard, let others to take leadership role, butlent his support. He walked slowly with majesticsteps, always wore clean long sleeve shirts, and kepthis office spotlessly clean and orderly. He had a goodhandwriting of which he might have been surelyproud.

FR. JAMES LAKRA, S.J(01.08.1943 -21.04. 2012)

Fr. James Lakra was born in 1944 in a profoundlyCatholic family of Ranchi parish. His father Regiuswas in charge of the cathedral's daily functioning. Helooked after the altar boys and carefully markedthe daily attendance of the kids for serving the priestswho said their daily mass privately at small sidealtars of the cathedral. The practice of saying communitymasses started later and till then masses were still saidprivately in Latin.

Prompted by father Regius' close control andpaternal advice small James and his younger brotherMarianus were among the most regular of the altarboys, at times prodded on and lauded by their uncle,Fr. Anthres, a devout diocesan priest.

Small James attended classes in the "parishschool", the primary section of the present St. Aloysius'school on Purulia road. At that time the Monfortbrothers of St. Gabriel had not yet taken over theschool, and a Jesuit priest, Fr. Louis De Raedt,tried- many times in vain- to keep the noisy kidsunder control. Fr. De Raedt's practised eyes spotted smallJames, in whom he recognized the seeds of a vocation tothe priesthood. James was one of themost active members of the cathedral's "Kakali"(The Koyal's Call") choir that used to perform onspecial occasions for the liturgical services. The smallsingers looked quite smart, dressed as they were inshining white albs, topped with monk's caps andgirded with shining gold sashes. They were standing onthe loft, round the organists Mr. Theophil's organ, andtheir vibrant voices made the whole big cathedralresound with their pious, joyous strains. Peopleseemed to like it immensely.

James was indeed a gifted lad, good at studiesand good at music and dramatics, and also good atsports, especially football which he practised withthe Pathalkudua urchins wherever they found someempty space.

James, together with his brother Marianus anda couple of other Ranchi kids were chosen to jointhe recently started apostolic school at Gumla.Father Nabor Lakra, the founding father, was tryingto instill in his flock some solid piety, zeal for studies, and commitment to manual work. The apostolics, it wasfelt, were a real boon for the high school, and results

were improving. Just then Fr. Nabor was transferredand Fr. Pancratius Toppo became the ApostolicSchool's director. The new director called his boysevery evening together to give them a solid sermon onthe religious requirements for future priests. But, histalks were perhaps a bit too much of a good thing, too solid for the fickle minds of his young audience. The other Ranchi kids all left, little James alone stuckit out. He grew up to become a well trained, talentedlad, a veritable all-rounder, doing well in the school'sacademic subjects, the extracurricular (music andoratory) and sport activities.

James finally joined the novitiate of the Societyon 26-07-1961 at Sitagarha. His whole training wasmarked by an almost intuitive feel for the better andmore important things. With his know-how and easy, friendly manners he apparently almost effortlesslyslid through the complexities of Jesuit training- alwayscool, always jovial, always full of comradery andhumour.

James was ordained in 1974 in Ranchi and tookhis last vows in 1983 in Gumla. The latter remainedhis field of apostolate. He knew the tricks of theteaching trade, and was respected by one and allfor his unassuming mastery in the Jesuit educationalapostolate. He was a totally reliable assistant headmaster, and when his tutor retired in 1987, hetook over the reigns. James, a mature and well respectededucationist by then, made the schoolreach new heights in proven Jesuit educationalpedagogy. He had an inexhaustible fund of energy.Every morning, even on rainy days, he was in theJubilee stadium coaching the boys, or he wouldtake his teams (both football and hockey) to playmatches on the Gumla court ground, fired by thefirm belief that true sports practice renders a youngperson serviceable, social-minded and complete.

James' active engagement in education did notstop with his official retirement as a teacher. Rather,it opened a new platform for his creative thinking ineducation. As the Principal of St. Xavier's School,Doranda (1998-06), besides aiming at academicexcellence, and his emphasis on co-curricularactivities- games and sports and others, he took theschool to the slums of Ranchi through the "Outreach"programme, motivating the school students to involve

Page 13: R. B. May-2012-Finalranjesu.org/pages/bulletin/R._B._May-2012-Final.pdfCommons and its project with the Jesuit Refugee Service ... accounts of conscience and personal accompaniment,

13

themselves actively in teaching the less fortunatechildren living in the slums.

In 2006 came the call from Assam. James did notshirk, but wholeheartedly took up the challenge. He wasinstrumental in starting St. Xavier's Junior College,Balipara where, besides academic activities, he lostno time to introduce and train budding hockeyfootball enthusiasts among the students. St. Xavier'sBalipara remained, till his final call from Lord, thecentre of his apostolic activity where, apart from hisinterest in teaching, his involvement in pastoralactivities around Balipara, created a desire in him to optfor this ministry. Fr. Provincial had, in fact, approvedhis new appointment as pastor that would have been

effective from June 2012 but the Lord's plan forJames was different and he did not hesitate to say"YES" to his Master's voice and be with Him.

That which stands out in Fr. James Lakra as aJesuit was his tremendous energy to work and hisdedication to the assigned responsibility. As an educator,he always supported and encouraged his colleagues. He could take others into confidence and motivatethem to join hands in collaboration. Where goals wereclear, he was not averse to collaborate even with otherpeople other than Christians. Simple life-style andfaithfulness to his religious vocation were marks of his Jesuitlife and charism.
