Larry Barr has been very active in the commu­nity. He has served as the President of the San Benito County Business Council for the past 12 years where he has worked for the expan­sion ofGavilan College into the surrounding communities. He currently is Chairman of the Board for the San Benito County Food Bank which serves food to 3,500 to 5,000 people in need each month.

Larry has also served as an advisor to the Monterey Bay Air Pollution Control District, and is an active Rotarian where he has held several local and District positions.

Larry founded a legacy project to recognize academic achievement by high school students. He has organized numerous international service projects and founded a highly praised dental hygiene project that has delivered over 50,000 toothbrushes to under privileged children in Columbia, the Philip­pines, Mexico, and Thailand. This ongoing project delivers dental hygiene education and tooth paste along with the toothbrushes.

Larry also helped lead a group of 10 high school Interactors to Panama, where they delivered, assembled, and delivered approximately 300 wheel­chairs. Larry also took the Interactors to the jungles of Mindanao, where the launched and completed the construction of a two room high school. Additionally, Larry was responsible for the renovation ofTagabaca Elemen­tary School and the construction of a new learning center at Magsaysay Elementary School. Each school has since been fitted with a source of clean water and flushing toilets. Larry has raised a substantial amount of money for the purchase of computers and other learning based equipment for each of the schools.

With a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Math and Physics from University of California at Davis and Chemical Engineering at Stanford, education is very important to Larry and he lets audiences all over the world know this every every chance he gets. "Education is the one thing that once you get it, no one can take it away."

Ww ~Ita 91£ !$}/fl/% ({)/~ Honor society membership has a long history in America, beginning when tutors and advanced teaching assistants joined forces to share scholarship discussion, and recognition of merit through an organization designated a Phi Beta Kappa, which was founded in I776 at the College of William and Mary.

In 1926 the California Community College Honor Society was formed under the title Alpha Gamma Sigma. It is affiliated with the National Junior College Honor Society and the Phi Beta Kappa Organization of four year institutions.

Rho Alpha Mu, the local chapter of Alpha Gamma Sigma, was formed in 1976. The Greek letters stand for RAM, the Gavilan College mascot. Eligibility for membership requires at least a 3. 0 grade point average. In addition, members are required to complete ten hours of community service each semester, and participate infundraising and other club activities.

To be eligible for life membership in Alpha Gamma Sigma, students must maintain a 3.25 grade point average in at least 60 units of college work and have been a member in good standing for at least two continuous semesters.

~@f~ The academic regalia worn by students and faculty are part of a tradition that goes back to the first organized bodies of learning in the 12'" Century. Commemorating the completion of formal education in the United States, the caps, gowns and hoods have been common apparel for the commencement ceremony since 1885. The more elaborate the gown and hood, the higher the degree. The silk lining of the hood bears the color or colors of the institution from which the bearer graduated.

The hood colors associated with different subjects are as follows:

Apricot- Nursing

Brown - Fine Arts, Architecture

Citron - Social Work

Copper - Economics

Crimson - Journalism

Dark Blue -Philosophy

Drab - Commerce, Accountancy, Business

Golden Yellow - Science

Lemon Yellow - Library

Light Blue -Education

Maize -Agriculture

Orange - Engineering

Pink- Music

Purple -Law

Russet- Forestry

Sage Green- Physical Education

Scarlet - Theology

Silver Gray - Speech

White -Arts, Letters, Humanities

Mortarboards are the approved headgear.

The black tassels are worn on the left side of the caps.

Gold cording is worn by those graduating with honors.

Platinum cording is worn by those receiving the Outstanding Scholar, Outstanding Vocational/Technical Student and Outstanding Transfer Student Awards.
