Background Germany alone has the best part of 40,000 kilometers of railway tracks, which are used to transport almost 400 million tons of predominantly heavy goods. It is the transportation method of choice not just for steel, gravel, and coal, but for cars on their way to the big sea ports as well. De spite this, to date freight wagons have been equipped neither with sensors nor their own energy supply. This is because rail way engineering must function under extremes of vibration, temper a- ture variations, dirt, and humidity that call for simple, robust solu-tions. As a result, connectivity technology – which is racing ahead in almost every other sector worldwide – has yet to find its way into rail freight transport. Now Bosch Engineering is filling that gap with its AMRA asset monitoring for railway applications solu-tion, which draws on tried-and-tested technologies and compo-nents from large-scale automotive production at Bosch.

Perspective AMRA makes freight wagons a part of the internet. The hardware installed in the wagons was first put through an extensive process of testing in fleet operation. Armed with these insights, the engineers at Bosch Engineering can now fully exploit and develop the potential of all the various functions. A solution based on the internet of things allows for efficient, cost-effective data transfer. What is more, Bosch’s many years of experience in data storage and the operation of worldwide networks guarantee data availability over the long term and a high level of data security.

Efficient monitoring with geolocalization Inte-grat ed GPS sensors enable users to see where wagons are. This data helps prevent losses, simplify wagon scheduling, and accelerate wagon circulation.

Improved efficiency with record of mileage Maps of the rail network are used to supply a pre cise record of wagons’ operation and routes – all displayed in an easy-to- interpret map. This information can be used to exactly specify freight wagon servicing intervals, transfer to a condition-based maintenance system, and improve maintenance planning.

Transparency with shock monitoring A 3-axis shock sensor measures and analyzes the strength of any shocks that occur during shunting and loading. This allows users to pinpoint the causes of potential damage to the freight wagon and its cargo, or to verify transport conditions.

Precise control with geofencing Having virtually marked out a defined area using geo-information systems, users are informed via email or text message if freight wagons have operated beyond the limits of their specified area. This can be used to calculate costs of demurrage, speed up wagons’ journeys, and improve fleet efficiency.

Overview with cargo monitoring Sensors in-stalled in the freight wagon measure parameters such as the temperature or humidity of the cargo. Results are displayed in a clear graphic that provides an indication of current status. The portal can be used to review and analyze condition data either for specific times or for the entire journey. When combined with the arrival notification, there is also the option to provide an electronic bill of delivery.

Task AMRA asset monitoring for railway applications is a system for the status monitoring of rail freight traffic that gathers current data throughout the journey. This includes the precise position of the freight, whether it is adhering to its intended course, any shocks to the cargo or to the wagon during maneuvering, as well as the temperature in the cargo area and the mileage accumulated.Data are sent to a server to be analyzed and grouped, opening up new functions in terms of the quality of business operations. By integrating this digital information into IT systems, the system provides the means to control logistics processes – enabling the fleet of freight wagons to be used to the full and deployed in the most effective way possible. In addition, the data provide a solid platform from which to undertake advance planning and put in place servicing and maintenance procedures.

Function AMRA is a smart fleet management system solution that consists of the AMRA device, the AMRA portal, as well as the optional AMRA wireless sensor technology. The AMRA device is a piece of telematics hardware featuring a GPS module, integrated GSM antenna, numerous sensors (wired and wireless), and a powerful battery. The AMRA device is fitted to the freight wagon to supply location and status data. These data are relayed to a server for analysis. The information is dis-played in the AMRA portal and can be integrated into the user’s business processes. The system was developed as a retrofit solution for existing freight wagons – since these do not have their own energy supply, the module is self-sufficient and operates using its own integrated battery. Nevertheless, it is also possible to integrate the system into the freight wagon direct at the point of manufacture.
