GALLIPOLI/TURKEY & WESTERN FRONT TOUR

This special battlefields tour is organized for members of the Order of Australia Association and their guests only. It provides a rare opportunity to visit WWI locations that Australians are deeply associated with from Gallipoli to the Western Front. On the occasion of the centenary of the end of WWI, this tour provides an opportunity to visit the sites of historic events that did so much to shape our new nation. The tour will be in two parts; Gallipoli/Turkey and the Western Front. Each segment can be undertaken on its own or combined to cover both theatres of war. Both of the tours have added on visits to locations that are of cultural or historical interest to ensure that there is an enriched experience for the participants. Below itineraries for the two parts are outlined in detail, initially beginning with Gallipoli/Turkey where it all began 103 years ago.

1. GALLIPOLI/TURKEY TOUR ITINERARY

Enjoy ten days of discovering Gallipoli battlefields, ancient and famous cities of Troy, Pergamum, Ephesus and Istanbul, the only city straddling two continents. This tour experience will be further enhanced as it will be accompanied by the dedicated tour leader Dr John Basarin OAM, and Mrs Hatice Basarin, a husband and wife team, both experts on Turkey as well as being authors and historians. The tour includes all accommodation in 3-4 star hotels, coach travel, all breakfasts and lunches and dinners as listed, tour guide, entry to museums and the world-renowned Turkish hospitality.

The Gallipoli campaign which began with a surprise attack in the early hours of 25 April 1915, ended in the early hours of 20 December 1915 with a surprise withdrawal. British and French on the other hand landed after a massive naval bombardment on the same day and left on 9 th of January 1919 with the full knowledge of the Turks. During this period, there was a staggering loss of life; 8709 Australians, 2701 New Zealanders, 28000 British, 10000 French and 86000 Turkish troops. A tragedy in any language.

As former Prime Minister Julia Gillard AC, said at a recent ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance to commemorate the coming of peace at Gallipoli:

‘On the morning of 20 December 1915, the guns fell silent on the ANZAC Sector at Gallipoli. The Turkish Forces farewelled the fighting and welcomed the quietness on their shores. Our troops, no longer young and raw but hardened and worn, sailed home to a different future and a new kind of hope. At the start of those 240 days of hell, they were called the Australian Imperial Force.By the time peace returned to Gallipoli, they owned a new and immortal name - the Anzacs.Unlike their French and British comrades, who held aloft battle honours like Austerlitz and Waterloo, the Anzacs had no tradition to rely on or defend. They did something greater - they created one.A new story for a new nation.’

The current Australian-Turkish friendly relationship born out of the tragic Gallipoli campaign was anchored in the words of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the legendary commander who stopped Anzacs at Gallipoli, then, led Turkish people to win their sovereignty, later becoming the inaugural President of

the Republic of Turkey. Ataturk's compassionate words in 1934, meant for mothers of Anzacs fallen at Gallipoli, laid the foundation stone for the friendship and respect that exists between the peoples of Turkey and Australia today.

Quote‘Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives … you are now living in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours. You, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace, after having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well.’

Ataturk, 1934

During its long history, Istanbul has served as the capital of the Roman Empire (330–395), the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman

We begin the day with a visit to World Heritage listed Hagia Sophia site (built in 537 AD and an architectural marvel to this day). Hagia Sophia was built as a basilica, converted to a mosque and is now a museum. The nearby Hippodrome was where political, cultural, and sports activities took place during the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman times. Also nearby is the Yerebatan Cistern built in the 6th Century AD to ensure water supply to the city. On the schedule is a visit to the famous Topkapi Palace where the Sultans ruled the Empire for centuries. The amazing Grand Bazaar which has over 4000 shops to confuse and delight you is the last stop. Overnight at Armada Hotel in Istanbul.

Day 3 – Saturday 15 June 2019

The day will start with a visit to the Blue Mosque (renowned for its six slender minarets and the beautiful Iznik tiles with dominant shade of blue that gives the mosque its name) built in the early 17h Century. No stay in Istanbul would be complete without visiting the Spice Market or taking an unforgettable Bosphorus Cruise. The Bosphorus Strait is 32 km long and joins the Sea of Marmara with the Black Sea, separating the continents of Europe and Asia. It has been a waterway of great importance since ancient times. The English name is derived from a Greek legend: Zeus had an affair with a beautiful women, named Io. When Hera, his wife, discovered his infidelity, she turned Io into a cow and created a horsefly to sting her on the rump. Io jumped clear across the strait. Thus bous = cow, and poros = crossing-place: Bosphorus = "crossing-place of the cow." This evening, a seminar is planned at your hotel where the tour leaders will be presenting to the group the history of Turkey. Overnight at Armada Hotel in Istanbul.

2. WESTERN FRONT TOUR ITINERARY

The Anzac legend was born on the beaches and ridges of Gallipoli then consolidated in the Middle East and in the trenches of the Western Front. After the failure of the Gallipoli campaign, the A.I.F. reorganised and moved to France for three more years of desperate fighting, often in appalling conditions. As the war dragged on the Australians built a reputation as courageous and aggressive fighters and in July 1918, after the Australian success in the Battle of Hamel, French Prime Minister George Clemenceau made the following speech, “When the Australians came to France, the French people expected a great deal of you... We knew that you would fight a real fight, but we did not know that from the very beginning you would astonish the whole continent... I shall go back tomorrow and say to my countrymen, I have seen the Australians, I have looked in their faces, I know that these men will fight alongside of us again until the cause for which we are all fighting is safe for us and for our children.”Our tour will take us to all of the major Australian battle sites, and to most of the major memorials to our Diggers, under the leadership of Garry Snowden. Garry has led many Gallipoli and Western Front tours, has written a book about soldiers from the Ballarat district and was the driving force behind the creation of the Garden of the Grieving Mother adjacent to Ballarat’s Arch of Victory. His interest in following in the footsteps of Anzacs has also led him to twice walk the Kokoda Track. Garry will be assisted by his Belgian friend and professional battlefield guide Rene Degryse. Rene grew up on the battlefields but now specialises in researching the stories of Australian soldiers and guiding Australians seeking to make family connections with the battlefields and cemeteries.
