PREPARATION: Apply Multi-Purpose Sealer. Let dry then sand again to smooth. Basecoat the entire board Grey Sky until opaque. Make a tracing of the design.

Notes:

Use appropriately sized brushes unless otherwise specifi ed.

Use the mop brush to soften fl oats.

To drybrush this project, load a dry or barely damp brush with paint. Offl oad excess paint on a paper towel then lightly skim the brush over the surface to be highlighted. It helps to hold the brush at a lower angle than normal or more parallel to the surface.

PAINTING INSTRUCTIONS:MoonTransfer the moon pattern onto the center of the surface and onto the contact paper. Use scissors to cut the moon shape from the Contact Paper and set it aside for now.

Use the wash brush and Warm White to base the moon until opaque. Keep the edges of the moon somewhat loose and undefi ned. Let dry. Wet the moon with water and use the #6 round brush and Sand Grey to paint shadows. Add touches of Grey Sky to deepen some areas (refer to photo of moon for placement). Concentrate most of the shadows in a backward C shape on the left side of the moon. Use the mop to soften the shadows (refer to photo of moon). Let dry thoroughly then place the contact paper over the moon to protect it. Transfer and paint bats Graphite.

SkyWork one half of the sky at a time. Use the wash brush and long, curved strokes to paint the sky. If you are a pokey painter try using a small amount of Dry-ing Time Extender in the sky area to give you more “open” time to blend the sky colors. Use Warm White to base an area 2” or so from the moon painting over the edge of the moon to further soften it. (refer to

sky photo). Pick up Turquoise Blue on the dirty brush and stroke from the outer edge blending into the Warm White area. Allow the blue color to fade out toward the moon’s edge. Wipe the brush off on a paper towel and pick up small amount of Prussian Blue. Work the Prussian Blue from the outer edge of the surface fading the color into the Turquoise Blue area. Pick up a small amount of Grape Juice and blend in here and there using the chisel edge of the wash brush. Repeat on the other side. Let dry. Tip: you may fi nd paint the other side of the sky easier by turning the project upside down. Remove the contact paper protector. User the shader and Warm White to drybrush the edges of the

moon to soften them further. Walk the paint outside the moon’s edge to create a glow around the moon. Use water to thin Warm White to the consistency of heavy cream. Load the toothbrush or spatter tool then offl oad excess onto scrap paper. Lightly spatter stars on the sky areas. Use a damp brush to remove unwant-ed spatters immediately.

Optional: To protect the sky and moon, you may want to apply a light coat of Multi-Purpose Sealer at this time.

Transfer the raven, trees, bats, and lettering. Omit raven details for now.
