President’s Message

It certainly is hard to believe that June is here and my first year as Guild President is almost complete. At this point, I would like to offer a sincere thank you to all the members of the Executive who have made this year a successful one. Without their continued efforts the Royal City Quilters’ Guild would not be the organization that it is. I would also like to thank the many committee members who worked with our chairs to lighten the load and make things run more smoothly. To the guild membership thanks for joining, for attending the meetings, for participating in events and for sharing your time and talents, I hope you will all consider taking on some responsibilities in the coming years to keep our guild as healthy and vibrant as possible. With the onset of summer and holidays, I am looking forward to browsing through my quilt magazines and books not only for inspiration but for techniques and challenges that I have not attempted. This is also a time when I houseclean my quilting paraphernalia and make some hard decisions with regards to what to discard and what to keep. Like many of you, I will also be completing projects that are currently underway or planning a totally new project. Whatever your plans for the coming months, have a safe, happy and productive summer.

Nancy Wells, President

Program

We finish our guild year with Jane Emondson of Dye-Version, Mississauga. Jane’s lecture is titled “The A-HA of Colour”. If you have ever visited the Dye-Version booth at a show, you know it’s very colourful. Jane will have items to see so don’t forget your wallets! Check out their website at www.dyeversion.com.

Book Review

Library

As summer approaches and thoughts of new projects for the fall fill your minds, please remember the following workshops available at the Three Willows United Church and note the days they are being run on:

Saturday, November 16, 2013—Open Thread Bar Workshop

Saturday, January 25, 2014—Machine Appliqué

Wednesday, June 11, 2014—The Singing Quilter

We will be having an announcement at the June meeting with regards to interest for Helen Fujiki’s workshop for either April or May 2014. Please see us at the sign-up table for particulars. Looking forward to seeing y’all at the June meeting and wishing you a wonderful summer!

Workshop Committee

Well, this is the final report for this guild year and for both Carol and I. We would like to thank all of you for a wonderful two years of friendship and inspiration. We have learned a lot and worked closely with some amazing people. As in past years, this last meeting will be for returning books only. We need to organize the library’s year-end inventory and so we ask you to return all borrowed books, videos, CDs and magazines. Therefore, there will be only one table set up for this return. There is a late fee of $1 per book per month, so that could add up to a pretty penny if any books are kept out over the summer months. If you are unable to make the meeting, please try to return your items with someone who is planning on attending. The guild’s library can be found at http://www.librarything.com/catalog/rcqg if you need to see what is available for any future projects. In the near future you may be getting a brief email reminder of the books that you have borrowed. This is done to assist you in locating any that have gone astray. We hope you have a safe and relaxing summer and will see you in the fall.

Remembering Adelia By Kathleen Tracy This is really quite a remarkable book. Inside you will find excerpts from the diary of a 19 year old, Adelia Thomas. Adelia lived in a farming community in northern Illinois, miles away from the conflict when the Civil War began in the spring of 1861. These accounts show us today how much sewing and quilting was a part of the life for the average woman of those times. The quilts and projects that Kathleen Tracey has included use traditional blocks in a variety of sizes from doll-sized quilts (because they’re a great way to start quilting if you’re a beginner) and wall-sized quilts to make an easy transition to larger quilts. I personally like the Tumbling Blocks Quilt on page 20 and the Orange Peel Quilt on page 46. There is a comprehensive section in the back of quilting basics so all that is really needed is a wee bit of time and perhaps a cup of tea to sit back and visit the past. Enjoy.

Executive Reports 2012-2013 Guild Year

Executive Reports 2012/13 (these reports have been shortened to accommodate the space provided in the newsletter. The reports in their entirety are kept by the current Guild Secretary should you wish to view them). President - Nancy Wells: I presided over 9 out of 10 guild meetings and 6 out of 8 executive meetings: sewed gift bags, wrote welcome notes and prepared a President’s Invitational Block for each new member; answered guild e-mails; picked up monthly mail; and edited the monthly newsletters and executive minutes. A special thanks to Susan Harrington for her guidance and for taking my plat at Executive or Guild meetings when I was incapacitated and also to Joanne Arris for presiding over the November Guild meeting when I was unable to attend.

Vice-President - Joanne Arris: I attended all executive meetings but one and assisted with the President whenever required. I cared for and stored the guild quilt which is sometimes displayed at guild meetings. I also met new members at the meeting door, introduced them to other members, reserved them a seat near the front for their first meeting, and showed them around the meting room pointing out our bulletin board, workshop sign-up table, etc.

Past President - Susan Harrington: I attended monthly executive meetings; booked meeting spaced for Guild and Executive meetings; renewed the Guild insurance; obtained nominations for the upcoming Guild year; revised the Standing Rules and filled in for the current President/Vice-President when needed.

Secretary - Anna Dawczyk: I thoroughly enjoyed my first year as secretary, attended monthly executive meetings and recorded the minutes of the meetings. These were distributed to the executive members prior to the next meeting.

Treasurer - Cyndy Maltby: I attended executive meetings, prepared the budget, recorded revenue and expenses, reconciled bank account monthly, issued cheques and deposited receipts.

Community Outreach Chair - Linda Devries: This year was very inspirational to me as I saw how willing the members of the Guild were at pitching in and helping each other. We had a busy Bee Day with 30 bees helping to make about 30 quilts. The Sexual Assault Unit should receive approximately 50 quilts. Special thanks to Sue Birkholz, Lisa Jones, Dana Scott, Karen Heal, Carol Cousins, Lorelei Stinson and Wendy Oskam.

Special Projects Chair - Monica Bell: No meeting has been held yet, but we will begin brainstorming in September 2013 for ideas to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Royal City Quilters’ Guild which takes place 2016. Members include: Joanne Ariss, Laurel Marsolais, Ann Jeffery, Susan Knabenschuh, Barbara Jordan and Edna Keown.

Library Co-Chairs - Berni Neville and Carol Cousins: This year has been a very successful one for our guild library. We added well over 20 books to our inventory. The Christmas Book and Bake Sale was again a winning combination of good cheer and great buys. Our committee of Elizabeth DeCroos, Elaine Gostick, Kathy McCallum, Flo Lonsdale, Vickie Gobbi and Louise Marshall has worked hard to make sure our members had a great selection of authors to choose from. Thank you one and all for your support.

Membership Co-Chairs - Noelle Green Willms and Ruth Jennison: In 2012/13 the RCQG had 135 full members, 19 new to the guild, 1 newsletter only member, 0 junior members and 39 guests (up to and including the April meeting). We ordered 250 RCQG membership pins which were distributed to new members and any members who did not already have them and ordered and distributed 150 directories. A very special thanks goes to committee members Robin Young and Wendy Oskam for their assistance and to Joanne Ariss for her help welcoming new members.

Workshop Chair - Helen Donaldson: Our 2012/13 Workshops included he following: Jan19/13: Deb Beirns’-Pineapple Log Cabin, Mar2/13; Alma Laidlaw’s Sashiko; Apr20/13: Dianne Bergmann’s-Machine Landscape and Thread Painting; Jun8/13: NancyWells’-3D Appliqué. A very special thank you goes to committee members Jackie James, Cindy Kinnon, Nancy McNab and Barbara Kuczynski.

Publicity Chair - Lisa Jones: I attended monthly executive meetings, updated and distributed the bookmark to various libraries and stores, advertised the monthly meetings, along with special meetings and workshops such as Ranae Merrill’s in the Arts Counci l newsletter and local media. For the first time CJOY was added to our media list. I also helped co-ordinate our quilting month displays at each library site. A special thanks to Judy Li, Jackie James and any others who helped with these endeavours.

Historian - Laurel Marsolais: I attended each guild meeting and photographed all the presenters and a representative same of their work. As well, I photographed and documented all the quilts presented at “Show and Share” and at the Past President’s Day workshop.

Website Chair - Susan Knabenschuh: As Website Chair I regularly updated the Guild website. Our monthly newsletters were posted as well as Guild news for Workshops and Community Outreach. A scrolling information box on the homepage indicated the date and speaker for the next scheduled meeting. The mechanics of the website are being updated and members will see a new look within this guild year.

Newsletter Chair - Mary Ellen Leggett: I was unable to attend the monthly executive meetings due to my work schedule but I prepared and distributed the newsletter to Guild members via e-mail. For those members who do not have e-mail, copies were distributed by regular “postal” mail thanks to Barbara Jordan.

Program Chair - Barbara Jordan with Co-Chairs Nancy McNab and Stephanie Moddison. I attended monthly executive meetings, met with committee members a number of times and booked a varied number of speakers/programs for the monthly Guild meetings which were all very favourably received. I also oversaw the monthly Show and Share and looked after the set-up and take-down of any items related to our monthly Guild meetings. A special thanks to committee members Judy Eckhardt, Hazel Switzer and Monica Bell.
