Questions vary from candidate to candidate; including your field of study, optionals, current issues,

anything..

The panel is very friendly. Chairman keeps smiling through out your interview, buys everything you say

and hardly ever cross questions.

Nagib Shb is asking somewhat tricky questions but his conduct is friendly as well.

Questions from current issues are broad and abstarct in a sense. Like they are asking about long march,

Balochistan, SC verdict.

Duration varied 5 to 7 mints.. 12 to 15 on avg.. 15 to 20 at times..

They didn't ask from my optionals. I have talked to a number of candidates and what I infer is, every

interview is taking its own direction. Some are asked about books, personalities, I wasn't asked.

Some interviews were opinion based and some were knowledge based as well!

Ma'am Batool was very nice. She was asking questions very frankly. She even asked me that

when among friends do you people discuss fashion, trends or the national issues.

There were questions like neelam ghar as well in some interviews. But after all it is test of your

persoanlity. They can assess it whatever the course interview takes.

Mine was for approximately 15-20 mins but I think it was less than 20 mins.I entered the room sat down. The members were smiling. They remained friendly throughout the

interview

(I have done masters in Politics and IR and Mphil in American Studies so their focus remainedon America)

Me: We used to go there often when my grandmother was alive; I think the last time I visitedwas in 2003.

Chairman: American Studies seems peculiar why this particular field

Me: Because the United States is an important country on the map, it plays an important role in

the world politics and we must know about the US politics, history, economy their culture andvalues. During my time at Islamic university, I developed an interest in American government

and politics while I was studying politics and IR. That too became a reason for mphil in the

subject.

The one on the right side: He asked something about the conservatives in the United States andwhy they are willing to go to war

Me: Because of puritan influence and they believe it is their mission to propagate their influence

and the concept of manifest destiny. Mayb cuz they want to establish their supremacy around theworld

He then again asked something about the conservatives being the Republicans and warmongers,

it was not a question rather a statement.

Me: Although almost all Republicans are conservatives not all of them are warmongrers orconservatives.

Mam Batool: Pakistan is facing energy crisis what other sources of energy can be utilized?

Me: Through wind and other sources but I would like it through exploration of coal, we mustutilize our resources.

Mam Batool: Do you think nuclear energy is a good alternative.

Me: After the Fukushema nuclear disaster in Japan I became a bit skeptical about the use of

nuclear energy because it was scary but yes we should go forward with it too to get rid of energycrisis.

The one on the right side (of chairman): On the issue of dams we couldn't solve our political

problems what do you think about thatMe: we must try to have a consensus on the issue of dams. If all the provinces agree we can go

forward with the dam (kalabagh) but without political consensus it wouldn't be a wise step.

Chairman:What are Sindh's reservations?The one on the right side: Name the districts in Southern Sindh

Me: I dont know (The only question that I passed)

Me: The wont get enough water for irrigating their lands

Chairman: You are a student of US history, why were people like martin Luther King and John FKennedy assassinated?

Me: Because some in the United States did not agree with their ideologies, their ideas, like

Martin Luther king was a civil rights activist, John F Kennedy too was pro blacks. There were

those who were opposed to what they stood for.Chairman: Who is your favorite US president?

Me: Bill Clinton

(Tricky question cuz I knew they would start asking follow up questions on the president. I knewabout Bill Clinton more than others and His wife is my favorite personality and I had already

written that in the Performa so after a second or two thought Bill Clinton would be a safe

choice). But the chairman was like he is one of the recent ones what about old ones something

like thatMe: Abraham Lincoln was good too. I like him and Bill Clinton.

Chairman: What did Abraham Lincoln do?

Me: Because he is the reason blacks are free today. After the civil war and his Emancipationproclamation the black slaves were freed.The one on extreme left: You presented a paper on media in America what was in it?

Me: It was about how media is responsible for influencing the public opinion, foreign policy,

war, electoral politics etc.The one on extreme left: How can you say media affects public opinion and foreign policy?

Me: I used examples in the paper like during the time of George Bush (Senior) when Somali

civil war broke out their plight forced Bush to send troops to the country due to the images that

flashed on the mediaHe cut me then and said what other examples did you use

I was like I am coming to that and started

Me: In Somalia the troops were sent and withdrawn due to public opinion influenced by themedia same is the case when the media in the United States covers the Middle East and gives

equal airtime to both Palestinian and Israeli casualties after disproportionate killings.

He cut me once again and said it is fair and not influencing the public opinion, It is fair to give

equal airtime to both sides.(I thought in my mind, dont let him prevail cuz already many details of my paper evaporated

from my mind due to his countering me constantly and I forgot all significant examples that I

used in it like Vietnam, Watergate etc )Me: Sir if the media covers an Israeli assault on Gaza in a way that it gives 20 minutes to 100

causalities on the Palestinian sides and gives same amount of time to 2 rockets fired on Israel

with only one casualty then this is unfair reporting.

The one on extreme left: What kind of media did you use?Me: Electronic, Channels like Fox news (Conservative) CBS (Liberal but slightly towards the

conservative side

[And that was my biggest blunder cuz it was my own opinion that I have formed during years

that CBS is a bit conservative some of the anchors from CBS]And before I could complete my sentence and say ABC liberal one Papers like New York Times.

He and the other person on the left said it is liberal; I realized in a spur of the moment that I

provided them with this opportunity myself just because I uttered my own opinion and did not go

with the popular view that CBS is liberal (which it is)

Chairman: Do you think media can instigate wars?

Me: I do, yes they can

Thank youThank you sir (All were smiling when I left the room no one was hostile)

It was an average interview in my opinion; I think I have missed no details.

Just stay calm, dont let anyone intimidate you, and no one will intimidate you because the

environment in the room remains good. Trust me.)Hoping for Allahs help

My interview held today. Here are my observations/experience:

1) Chairman asked in detail about my academic backgroud and as I am an engineer, so my suitablity and

reason for switching from technical job to civil service.

My current job resoponsiblities, activities and different things related to my expereince.

2) After chiarman, person sitting next to him asked about my books and I had selected "Reluctant

Fundamentalist" by Mohsin Hamid and "Mother" by Gorky. Then there was detailed discussion about

theme of books, different aspects of fundamentalism and Paksitani society as fundamentalist etc. etc.

"Mother" was also discussed in context of socialism and marxism. He also asked about which system is

better? Why socialism failed in Russia?

3) The another panalist asked about role of mothers in integration of our society with respect to novel

"mother"

4) Madam asked me " what do you think implications of Indo-Isreal nexus on Paksitan?"

5) Another queation: When the Balochistan problem will be resolved? time span

6) the social integration of our society is weakening day by day. what can be done to improve this?

7)Why "USSR" fell?

8) Is "bipolar" world better or "unipolar"? why?9)And some more discussion about extremism, fundamentalism etc.

Interview lasted for 23-25 minutes.

Overall environment was very frank and friendly. Chairman was smiling most of the times.

(I thought in my mind, dont let him prevail cuz already many details of my paper evaporated

from my mind due to his countering me constantly and I forgot all significant examples that I

used in it like Vietnam, Watergate etc )Me: Sir if the media covers an Israeli assault on Gaza in a way that it gives 20 minutes to 100causalities on the Palestinian sides and gives same amount of time to 2 rockets fired on Israel

with only one casualty then this is unfair reporting.

Timing: 2 4pm to 2:29pm.

Confident with smile on face, I entered the room, said Salam to all n proceeded to the chair.

Chairman asked me to have a seat.

I button off my coat n sat in the chair comfortably.

Chairmanasked me general Qs related to my field (textiles).

Then, Chairman asked me about Durand line, ceasefire line n LoC.

I answered correctly with figures like dates n lengths.

He then enquired me about origin of names of these lines.

I again answered him with accurate figures.

(Chairman seemed satisfied).

Then, Nagib Ullahsb asked me why I wanted to join PSP.

I delivered 5 pertinent reasons.

He enquired me about various things regarding Police n I gave my answers with comfort.

He then asked me why I opted Philosophy.

I gave very strong reasons.

He smiled n asked me the philosophy of my life.

I satisfied him on this point.

Then, Mansoor Suhailsb further asked me abt Philosophy n Pak-US Relations.

I answered with facts n added new nominations of Obama in my answer.

(He seemed satisfied too).

Then, Ghalib-ud-Dinsb again asked me about Philosophy n US-Hist.

I again played in my strong area.

In the last, Mam Batool asked me about Dr. A Q Khan n Indo-US Nuclear deal.

I answered her to the point n explained to her our national interests in this case.

She asked me a technical point n I answered it pertinently.

(She seemed satisfied too).

Finally, Chairmansmiled to me n said "Best of Luck, Have a nice day!"

I reciprocated by saying "Sir, Have a good day too "

He passed smile. I got off my seat, button up my coat n turned to the door.

Overall, I enjoyed the whole activity. Panel was soft-spoken. I listened to them carefully n they, to me. Most of the times, members seemed satisfied with my answers n their body-language n gestures were

very positive .

Guys I am posting my interview that took place today.

first of all i want everyone to relax up because the panel is very friendly and encouraging. They dont

cross question much and they make a very comfortable environment. Chairman keeps smiling and

seems interested in every detail that you provide.

About urdu or english, it depends upon which path you take them.My interview was all general. I worked in UN and currently am with an international organization so

their interest remained focused on Refugess, Idps, losses of natural disasters, figures of refugees, figures

of world bank, foreign aid, UN mandate, goals,developments, UNSC reforms,Kashmir issue, 1970 war,

taliban and yes they asked me about my fav book and few questions that I had mentioned in my

psychological performa.

It was a good experience, i want to tell everyone to please relax and release all your tensions. Just try

and know yourself better. It will help you a lot.

My interview was conducted on 19th Feb, 2013 in Peshawar. My turn was fifth. The first fellow who

came out said, it was general and she was asked about energy crisis. It was all she could tell us. The guy

before me told me that it was general and he was asked about the terrorism issue, FATA and the

American troops withdrawal from Afghanistan. The came my turn

The Interview started and the Panelists received me with smiling faces. After sitting, it started:

Chairman: You are from FATA. Which agency?

Me: I am from FR Bannu

He: Wazir?

Me: Yes

He: which tribe, Ahmadzai?

Me: No, Utmanzai

He: Ok, so U have done your LLB and now you are teaching. U have also practiced at courts for some

time, A Lawyer-turned-Lecturer.

Me: Well Sir, actually I practised only for a few months, just to get my bar enrollment and practicing

lisence.

He: Ok, why? u didn't like lawyer profession or the black coat?

Me: No, actually my family is job-oriented, I mean government service. My father also suggested me to

join service, so I quit. I practiced just to get lisence bcz it was a bit enthusiastic after fresh graduation,

my friends were also doing the same and I was free during those months.

He: Ok. So now u are in Gomal University. When was it founded?

Me: In 1974.

He: And how many departments there?

Me: I dont know exactly but above 30, round about 34. Actually two new departments have been

established last year and some are under the process, so dont know exactly.

He: Ok, so during this period, from 1974 till this date, which departments have got a better reputation.

Me: People say that Pharmacy of Gomal University is very good and also the Veternary Sciences College,

thats also very famous.

He: Ok. You have mentioned in your hobbies that you like to listen to music. What kind of music do you

like to listen?

Me: Well I used to listen to a variety of music. I listen to Arabic and english, semi-classical like ghazals

and others

He: No, I mean you like classical or what type?

Me: That depends upon my mood. I used to listen to semi-classical, ghazals and some times I like to

listen Rock bands.I mean I listen to the music which seems good to me at times

He: Thats strange, what music do u like? (smiling)

Me: Well Sir, music, poetry are things that you can not name the poet always for example, its a poem or

verse that you like and then you wanna read it.

He: Ok, lemme ask then in what kinda mode do u like to listen which kinda music?

Me: When I am alone and wanna have some rest and peace, I would prefer a ghazal or a soft tune. I

listen to rock music specially when I am driving bcz that keeps me active and enthusiastic.

He (lot of smiles): Well but be careful, while listen to fast music you might not hit your car.

Me: Yes sir, sure. I always be careful about that.

He: Ok, what is your opinion about the judiciary?

Me: Its good Sir. In my opinion, it is far better though I must say that on some points it do transcend its

jurisdiction, its sphere but over all situation, its better.

THEN THE OTHER PANELIST (I think Mr. Nageeb) STARTED ASKING:

He: Ok Siraj Khan. Do you know about the nationalization during Bhutto's era. What were its causes and

what was its result?

Me: Yes sir, Bhutto started to nationalize the institutions, I mean taking them under the state's control.

It was because of the ideology of Peoples Party as it is still in their menifesto that Socialism is our

economy. So that was a socialist move, because in socialism, institutions belong to state, the productive

resources are owned by state. And its result, in the long run was not good.

He: How?

Me: Because when the state took control of the institutions, major industries, they came under the

influence of the politicians, ministers. So that resulted in lot of political interfearence in them, so politics

was involved. That also increased corruption. Lot of people were recruitted on political basis, infact

over-recruitment was made and ten people were given job in an office where we needed a few. And

ultimately, that resulted in over-burdenning the exchequer as state had to pay to them plus state had to

put money inese institutions to run in case of crisis.

He: But I have these figures in front of me which show that it benefit the country. In the begining, they

proved good?

Me: Well sir, I dont have any figures infront of me and I donnu any, but experience in the long run

showed that it proved a bad decision and thats why we have to reverse that policy afterwards by

privatizing them again, even in the govts of Peoples Party.

He: Ok, Leme ask something else, about the corporate sector. How can we stop them from eating out

everything, like you know the corporate people, they are squeezing us and taking everything of us, their

greed. How to control it?

Me: well sir, your question is based on the presumtion that all corporate people are bad. I wont agree

with that, there could be good people as well. And how to control them, lemme think, I think the better

way is to implement our laws in true spirit to protect others rights.

He: Ok, lemme put it in another way, how can we curb the corporate sector from this greed?

Me: Well sir, I dont have a much solid solution as we have also experienced the nationalization process,

by taking it in state's control but that didn't work. So I would say that we should strengthen our laws and

implement them fully and truly.

He (cutting me): Do u know? In Libya, Qadafi govt used to sell their oil for ..........billion dollars. And after

his govt fell, it was discovered that the greater chunk went to their accounts and less was there for the

people.

Me: Ok sir, i didnt know that but I think this example doesnt fit our situation bcz Libya was a socialist

state under Qadafi. So the corporate sector wasn't like us in there, it was state-controlled of which you

talked earlier in Bhutto's time. And Libya was a scoialist state, I agree that less civil and political rights

were there, but they wrere providing lot of socio-economic rights to the people like medical care, free

education.

He: Ok, but people dont need only food, there are other things important as well.. Ok lets move

forward, Bhutt had a socialist ideolgy but from a land-lord background, likewise Imran Khan has a liberal

background but his ideology is not, what do you think how this affects, our leaders like this.

Me: Well, I think that personal background is not that important if the person is committed truly to the

ideology that he presents, and its ideology that matters.

He; But a leader should prove himself a role model for others.I am asking it philosophically.

Me; Well I dont think it is not necessary that a socialist should start living in a hut. As I said before its the

ideology I think that matters, if it is good for the people and there is a true commitment to it. I do not

believe in personalities, what I believe is the ideology on which a party is formed, personalities may have

personal flaws but they ere not important to me. Personalities come and die but the idea lives for a

longer period.

He: Ok, tell me then that which political leader do you like in ths history of Pakistan? A role model for

you or that u really admire.

Me: Well frankly speaking sir, I was born during the martial law of ziaul-Haq, that was my childhood.

Then I saw the two turns of peoples party and muslim league, the way they had enmity for each other

which seems childish to me that they always thought of their own benefit to come into power. And then

musharraf. But none of them could impress me.

He: Ok but don't we learn people from reading books? I mean in the past any leader?

Me: Thats right but in writings, there is always difference of opinion and you have to rely on one. I dont

have any such leader who is an ideal for me. I would rather say that after Quaid-e Azam, we couldn;t

produce a single leader of his calliber.

He: Ok, don't u think that some contribution they also made for example Nawaz Sharif. It is said that

Muslim League govt contributed in building infra-structure, like the motor way, which is a huge

contribution towards our infra-structure development.

Me: It would be, as I admire the motor way but besides that he has also committed lot of blunders as

well which did not good to the country.

He: for example?

Me; For example, after the atomic blasts that we made, the govt freezed the foreign reserve accounts.

He apealed the overseas Pakistanis first to send their money to Pakistan and when received here, he

freezed their accounts and they couldn't take their own money back. And the govt offered dollars to

then laterly for Rs. 45 though in open market, it was Rs 55 worth. So that was, lemme say, a very stupid

move from him.

He (nodding head): Ok. You have done LLB, tell me about the doctrine of necessity. How it affected our

country?

Me: The doctrine of necessity dodn't do any good. It was used to validate the dictators rule in our

country, the military take overs were granted validation always under the plea of this doctrine, so I dont

think it did some good.

He: But the supreme court had accepted it and validated?

Me; yes, thats true. The supreme court under the influence of thos dictators adopted it but that was

wrong e.g when the first martial law was imposed by General Ayub, the supreme court in its judgment

said that the whole modern constitutional jurisprudence revolved around this doctrine which was false

(I wanted to add but then the other panelist started).

THE THIRD PENELIST (I THINK MR. MANSOOR SOHAIL)

He: So siraj khan, you have mentioned a book here "A History of God" by Karen Armstrong. who is this

author?

Me: Sir Karen Armstrong is a british scholar. She became a nun during her adolesence and remained

there for seven years. Then she left the nun-ship (the panelist said, the monastry), yes the monastry and

applied for a scholarship to the Oxford University. After getting the scholarship, she graduated and

completed her Ph.D thesis over there. She writes on comparative religions.

He: Ok, so what is in this book?

Me: That is clear from its name "A History of God". In it she had written about the concept of God during

different periods of history of mankind. She focused on the three major religions which claim to be

divine ones: Islam, Judaism and Christianity. The concept of God in them, how it evolved and how it

affected the lives of their followers. Like the concept changes according to needs of the people for

example. God is away from our sight and senses so we conceive Him according to our needs and wishes.

An area where rain-fall is scarce, raining would be considered as one of major attributes of God that He

brings rain but areas where rain-fall is abundant, people won't ask God anymore to cause rainfall and it

would become a usual phenomenon. They would consider God as the giver of some other needs and

wishes for which they turn to Him and ask Him to fulsill them.

He: Ok, which one is your favorite chapter in it? I mean its a good book, I have read it twice though I do

not agree at different points. Which chapter do you like the most in it?

Me; I like the chapter about Islam.

He: About Islam, Ok. what is your concept of God?

Me: You mean my personal concept of God?

He: No, I mean what does Quran says about God. I am a muslim, I mean you and we all are muslims so I

didnt mean any such thing, so the Quranic concept of God.

Me; Well, according to the Quran, God is the creator of the Universe and He has created it to test us, the

human beings according to His plan. And God is One, He is Unique, there is nothing like Him. No eyes

can see Him ever and...

He: God do not transform, that is also very important, U know transformation of God? into a human or

some other thing like fire.

Me: Yes, thats important. In Islam, there is no concept of tranformation of God into any other form, He

is unique and His Ownself.

He; Ok, do you know about peganism? Do they believe in God?

Me: Yes, I know. The pegans do not believe in God, they worship manythings for example starts, planets

and...

He: You mean they worship multiple gods?

Me: Thank you sir as well.

So that was my whole interview, almost word by word whatever had been asked and how did I reply. I

do not know whether it was good or not, as it was very general and a sort of debate or discussion. But I

replied with full honesty whatever I believed in and I was confident, fluent, polite and humble in the

discussion.

Me: yes sir, I think that I am good in communication (he: diplomacy?), I m good in communicating my

ideas, in presentation of them in good form, I can convince others my point of view. So I think that I can

do a better job in that field to represent my country.

He: U think u are better? why do u think and better than what?

Me: I am not making a comparison with anyone, I mean I can do this job better. As you knowunfortunately, our country has an ill-reputation in the outside world. Most of the people know us in

terms of terrorism, bomb blasts and negative things. I think that image should be changed and I can

contribute in it. By telling them the other side of the picture. The good things about us that are not

known to them, the soft image of us who we are to represent better.

He: U mean the soft image of Pakistan.

Me: Yes, and thats what is needed much.

Interview started at 3 0pm. At that point of time, the situation in Karachi was deteriorating each

minute and the news of IG Sindh resignation was in the corridors, when I was called for interview with

the panel.

I greeted Good Afternoon, to which Chairman Sahab replied Assalam u Alaikum and then asked me to

take a seat.

Chairman sb started the interview: Your profile is fit for a job in a multinational company, why do you

sciences in higher studies.

The next panelist asked about London riots 2010 and whether David Cameron austerity measures were

responsible for it. He also asked about APTMA, recommendations to improve tax base

assessment, and how the place where I work manage the issues of environment

4th Panelist (Najeeb Sahab) started speaking me in French. He asked me why I learned the language and

how does French language helps me. His questions were regarding Eurozone crisis and how France,

Spain and Greece are faring. He also asked me potential regions where Eurozone type union can be

formed and viable.

There was visible commotion and fidgeting with mobile during the interview as the law and order

situation was deteriorating minute by minute in Karachi. The female panelist even left the room once to

attend a call.

The interview finished at 3:30pm. There were 3 people waiting to be interviewed after me.

I took my interview today.

First I would like to make you relax that there is nothing to worry about.Penal is very friendly.

Interview was of 30 minutes

The panel was comprised of five members. Chairman started the question answer session. They had my

educational proforma (which all the candidates had submitted in Psychological assessment) and started

questions from that. Questions relating to

> Educational background and why did not i opt any of my subjects of specialization in css exam

> My teaching career and why i am leaving my university job for a low paid job

> Details of subjects i am teaching ... (much detail they asked )

> The gender based problems in my institute where i am teaching and their solution

> Foreign policy- relations with USA with Afghan 2014 withdrawal, China is a superpower or not?

(foreign service was my preference)

The panel was really satisfied with my answers except in the case of a few when Mr. Mansoor Sohail

interrupted and presented his stance. A few things I would suggest after interview

> Listen questions very carefully and answer accordingly

> Be natural

> Interview is mostly in ENGLISH language. So, practice speaking English as you will be required to

answer questions in detail not just in a sentence. So, language should be fluent.

> Be confident.( I found candidates could not sleep whole night,sweating ,walking here and there,

before interview).

> There is no substitute of Knowledge. So, knowledge on all the current issues is very important

> Carefully study the books and personalities you mention

> You should know why you have pursued a particular career(like doctor, lawyer,engineer etc)and whyare you coming for civil service.

and

> your qualities which you feel are suited for a particular group

Dear the question was not in much depth.. firstly, mr. najib asked about the economic condition

of 2007-08 and not 2012. secondly, as to my point of view there's is no much comparison other

than immediate breakdown of economy in both years.. in 1999, after nuclear tests, we witnessedinternational isolation, trade deficit, government seized accounts of expatriates and so on..

similarly in 2007-08, after enjoying healthy gdp growth, we again faced sudden economic

degradation following growing problems of law and order, energy crisis, flight of local andforeign investment, political insensitivity (lawyer's movement), international recession and soon..

Having a law background, chairman's question of judicial role in economic mechanism related toSC's judgments on RPP, Reko Diq, Sugar pricing, etc.. but the whole discussion surrounded on

the principles rather than the facts of the cases.

My interview went pretty smooth Alhumdullilah. The panel was quite friendly, especially the Chairman.

the duration was around 22 minutes. they asked me the following questions:

he asked me about my educational background briefly and then asked what did I do after my

graduation. I replied that I was doing free-lance writing. then he asked me about my free-lance writing

in detail. this consumed a long time. After that he asked me the reasons to opt for my first group

preference.

Q. asked what did these incidents reflect and where is our society headed?Q. asked ways how to curb this situation.
