Question 7- Looking back at the preliminary task what do you feel you have learnt in the progression to the full product

Page 2: Question 7 looking back at the preliminary task

• From the preliminary task I have learnt a lot of things when making a college magazine I didn’t have to put a lot of care into it, I used basic Photoshop tools and sampled colours and font from previous magazines. I also looked at previous college magazines that had been made and used them as a guideline. I took my pictures outside because I didn’t want to edit the background in photoshop as it was a winter issue so I used snow from outside as my background . The magazine was very basic and amateur, this task was very useful because I started to understand the features of photoshop and how to use it for when I do my music magazine.

Preliminary Task

Audience Feedback• When making my college magazine I didn’t have to use questionaires to

ask people what they wanted to see in a college magazine as I already knew what needed to be in the magazine and what didn’t.

• Before I even started designing my music magazine I had to ask a variety of people questions like what they wanted to see in a magazine, what sex of the model would they prefer, what genre of music they like and what would generally attract them to buying my magazine. From this pre production feedback I then designed my front cover, contents page and double page spread, once I had completed this I then had to get more audience feedback of what they overall thought about my magazine, whether they would buy it or not and what were my strengths and weaknesses, this all helped me to make a magazine which my target audience would actually want to buy

Camera

• For my music magazine I had to put a lot of time and care into it because it had to be as close as possible to a real magazine so I couldn’t afford and mistakes or messiness. For the music magazine I had to use a DSLR camera.

Green Room and Photoshop• I had to take pictures of my model in the green room, I used that camera because

it has very sharp quality and by taking pictures in the green room I could easily edit out the background using photoshop. Both the preliminary task and main task were done in photoshop however I had to use a lot more tools on photoshop for my music magazine to make it look professional and make sure everything was in line and neat. My image had to be pin sharp and have no shadows, the edges of the image had to be smooth so it didn’t look like an amateurs work.

Drafting my work• When designing my college and music magazines I had to draw out what

I wanted the pages to look like, this was much more difficult for the music magazine because I had to draw a front cover, contents page and double page spread whereas for the preliminary task I only had to do a front cover and contents page. I had to make the music magazine look very professional so I planned and drew out what I wanted the layout of the magazine to be like many times I also looked at the way ‘Vibe’ magazine was laid out as my magazine was suppose to be like there’s so I got ideas by looking at real magazines as well as adding my own ideas to what I wanted on my magazine.

• I then had to show the development of each page of my music magazine to show what I am going to improve that I dislike and why I am going to improve it and also show what I liked about the magazine and how it was like a real life published R&B magazine.
