Question 4: Who would be the audience

for your media product?

Page 2: Question 4 for Evaluation

For our specific genre which is a Romantic Comedy, predominantly our audience is women. Yes some males might watch Rom-Coms or chick flicks as they are also known, but they’re probably watching it because their wife or girlfriend wants to watch it and they are too polite to complain. The thing is women of all ages can most likely relate to certain aspects of Rom-Coms. Whether they are in their late teens or mid 40’s, they all love a ‘happy ending’. Why is it mainly women that watch Rom-Coms? Well they are easy to watch and don’t require too much thought.

The main characters are most likely to be easy on the eye. And most importantly they have a happy ending, which will make you laugh and cry throughout. An all round feel good film. Which the majority of women can’t resist.

There is evidence to prove that it is predominantly women who watch Rom-Com’s as an article from ‘The Wall Street Journal’ suggests, that Hollywood’s new tactic to get more men into watching Rom-Coms, is to deny that the movies are romantic comedies at all. As the people watching any Rom-Com know that there is going to be a couple at the end no matter what. So in ‘Friends with benefits’ moviegoers already knew that Mrs. Kunis and her costar Justin Timberlake will end up together at some point.

However in the film ‘No Strings Attached’ they had a different strategy which was to class it as a ‘non-romantic comedy’. This was then followed by the trailers and ads focusing more on the sex, rather than the romance. As it was presumed that this was what males would rather see in a Rom-Com, and hopefully make them change their views on romantic comedies from watching this. Despite their efforts exit polls showed that 70% of the people who saw the film were women. This just highlights the fact that it is very hard to encourage a male audience to see a romantic comedy, even if it is one in disguise. There are many different reasons behind this, for example they might not want to watch it in case it damages their status and their scared that if their friends find out that they will think of them differently because of it. Or it might just simply be because they’d rather be watching explosions, than watching people confess their love to one another.
