Gratification theory | Personal Identity• Mick was a bit nerdy and geeky and wanted that to be reflected in the

magazine• This happens in real life where rock fans fill intimidated or scared of

by full on “in your face” models, which are the convention of rock magazines• Because the target demographic are people like hypothetical mick,

the cover of my magazine is more subtle on focuses le on “sex and drugs” and more on “rock and role”

Urban tribes

• Michel Maffesoli (1985) came up with the idea of he Urban tribe. An urban tribe is a small group who as similar views and behaviours. • A lot of urban tribes where there is a rock common interest isn’t catered for.

This means that where there are “tribes” that aren’t stereotypical rock fans, aren’t looked at- leaving a gap in the market.• This is timed with the rise of less stereotypical looking rock fans, so the gap

needs to be filled before another magazine aims to target the same demographic.• An example of how I’ve tried to target the “new rock image” is on the centre

spread, my model had glasses, is wearing a shirt and is looking happy. This is compared to in kerrang, the model is dressed in punk rock style clothing, a chocker necklace and is looking at the camera seductively.

Gratification theory | Inform

• According to Gratification theory; one of the reasons for a product to be made is to inform, that is true here• On of the cover lines is helping to inform about starting a band, where

as the double page spread is informing about making music and information behind the song.• This relates to the target audience as part of the target audience is

people who are/ want to make music. This means that by having/advertising help about making the next big rock song, the magazine is attracting their target audience
