What is a Film Distributor? A film distributor is a company or individual

responsible for the marketing of a film. The distributor may set the release date of a film and the method by which a film is to be exhibited or made available for viewing: for example, directly to the public either theatrically or for home viewing (DVD, video-on-demand, download, through broadcast syndication etc.). A distributor may do this directly, if the distributor owns the theatres or film distribution networks, or through theatrical exhibitors and other sub-distributors. Advantages & Disadvantages Of Major Film Distributors

A major film distributor is a company that releases a substantial number of films annually and consistently commands a significant share of box office revenues in a given market. In north American, western, and global markets the major film studios, often simply known as the majors, are commonly regarded as the six diversified media conglomerates.

ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

- Large budgets - Effective and successful marketing due to the budget available - Mostly successful and large profitable feature films- Shown in most of the cinemas globally- Synergy with other large companies

-Less creative control as the director/producer have a board from the media company to answer to- Less personal reward and profit as there are many share holders in the company

Advantages & Disadvantages Of Independent Film Distributors

An independent film distributor is a professional film production resulting in a feature film that is produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system. They are sometimes distinguishable by their content and style and the way in which the filmmakers’ personal artistic vision is realized.

Advantages Disadvantages

-The director has more creative control as there is not a board to answer too or the share holders-Targets a niche audience -More personal reward and profit-Retain full control and rights over your film

-Lower budget to distribute on including the marketing of the film-Will not be shown in all the major cinema chains so therefore will not make as large profit -May limit your options with buyers
