In what ways does you're media product use, develop or challenge

forms and conventions of real media products?

Q1

Page 2: Question 1

• Single letter and highly contrasting bright colours makes logo and magazine prominent

• Serif font appeals and suggests it is targeted at an older more mature audience compared to ‘Kerrang’ and ‘smash hits’.

• Round groovy style sans serif font connotes un formal magazine aimed at a younger audience age 17-27.

• Purple lips suggests it is a fun crazy magazine with high aesthetic values. The fact the magazine does not have a specific logo( it changes every issue) was and is considered a challenge to the conventions of the media and magazine industry.

Page 3: Question 1

• I wanted the logo to have the impact and prominence of ‘Q’, whilst still challenging the conventions of the industry.

• The boldness and simplicity of the logo conforms with most magazines, as it stands out and is easy to recognise. The font used is not conventional and the variety of colours is challenging. Magazine titles very rarely use more than two colours, and the fact these colours represent Rastafari is even more challenging to the conventions of all real media products.

“Genres are not static but shifting and slippery, evolving over time.”

Lemon squash (dub DJ), shows that he has been influenced by the punk band, suggesting that the genre of punk may have evolved into sub genres, such as dub, reggae and dancehall.

The fact the subject has been placed in front of a graffiti wall shows that it connotes the artist and genres style, beliefs, personality and interests. This technique is used in every music magazine. This is an example of the magazine using the conventions of real media products.

Page 6: Question 1

•Layout is far more simple than conventional music magazines

•The content is challenging to the usual content found in music magazines aimed at youth. As it focuses purely on the music produced and where and when they are performing.

•Conventional interviews with bands usually touch on the music but also discuss unrelated subjects such as clothes, personal life and record deals.
